This week, I’m talking with Derek Shulman, founding member and lead singer of the band Gentle Giant, one of the most influential bands on the prog rock movement. Known for their multi-instrumental talents, complex melodies, and baroque influences, Gentle Giant stated their aim was to "expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of becoming very unpopular" and whilst not breaking a huge commercial success, the band developed a cult following and are held in high regard amongst prog rock fans today. Derek joined me over zoom from New York City to chat about the band, and his own solo career as a music executive.

This week we bring you a chat with Derek Shulman. Who? many of you are asking. Well if you liked the eighties then Derek is one of the guys that help define that decade.
Just go down the list of bands he signed as an A&R guy with Polygram and it becomes readily apparent that where he went everyone else followed.
However, his influence didn’t stop there as he also went on to champion bands like Dream Theater and Pantera and even today he’s still got the golden ear for bands as he’s also recently brought us bands like Inglorious.

And as always Focus On Metal…Everything Else is Insignificant.
