This is such a special episode with such a special person — Sydney Petersen, founder of Bizzy’s Boutique, Bizzy Izzy’s Wholesale and the Love Izzy Project.  Sydney truly inspires me, not only as a business owner but also as someone who spreads joy and hope to others. Get ready to have your heart strings pulled (especially all you mommas)! Sydney named her business after her daughter Isabelle (Izzy) who was born with a rare genetic disorder and, as a result, had a prolonged stay in the NICU.  Fortunately from Sydney’s traumatic experience came a beautiful baby girl, a new community of NICU moms and an inspired business idea. It all started with the Love Izzy Project. Sydney began designing swaddle blankets as a way to give back to other NICU moms and their babies. For every  Love Izzy swaddle blanket sold, a swaddle is donated to the Blank Children's NICU.  Her Bizzy-ness grew from there, and now Sydney specializes in all things children’s as a boutique owner and the designer of the Bizzy Izzy's kids line.  We talk retail vs. wholesale, social strategy, the value of Facebook Groups, customer avatars, ambassador programs, and photography. Episode 57 - Izzy built an addition onto their shop, worked on his beast of a CNC thats 5x25 FEET LONG! Redesigning a new Dust Collection System for the Avid CNC. And working on a secret clamp storage project that he’s developing. Pete has been restoring several Stanley hand planes, and flattened the bottoms by lapping them a granite slab with a sandpaper. After flattening all the planes in his shop, on the last on which was a #7, he cracked the cast iron frog! Fail! But its still functional. Dan has been clearning space in preparation for his CNC. Trimming out the basement, and potentially doing more work for that same client by adding a vanity to the bill. Mike was flattening an elm slab and “found” some nails in the wood with his bit. Had a miter saw blowout that scared him a bit, and he got to meet some local metalworking makers for a project. Joke of the night:“Do you know why they call a hand plane frog a frog? We're thrilled to start of 2020 talking about the books that messed us all the way up in 2019 and to chat with the inimitable Jericho Brown about the South, rhyme, and why we write at all.   Jericho Brown is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, and the National Endowment for the Arts, and he is the winner of the Whiting Writer's Award. Brown’s first book, Please (New Issues 2008), won the American Book Award. His second book, The New Testament (Copper Canyon 2014), won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. His third collection is The Tradition (Copper Canyon 2019). His poems have appeared in The Bennington Review, Buzzfeed, Fence, jubilat, The New Republic, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Paris Review, TIME magazine, and several volumes of The Best American Poetry. He is an associate professor and the director of the Creative Writing Program at Emory University.   The Bizzy Izzy: sherry, bourbon, pineapple, and lemon juice on ice in a high ball glass. A pre-prohibition cocktail created by Tom Bullock, the first African-American to author his own cocktail manual.
