Barkley was offered the city manager position which currently occupied by interim city manager Luis Pedroza.    The contract approval would’ve taken place at a special city council meeting Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. inside the council chambers at City Hall.   So what happened?    Mayor Donald Huish said that Douglas Human Relations Director Ricio Pedroza had been notified that Barkley had also been offered a three-year contract with the city of Winslow.    Barkley apologized for the short notice, and wished everyone the best. The event is organized by Desiree Rice of Classy Cuts &amp; Such and co-sponsored by the Douglas Elks Lodge and the city of Douglas. It’ll take place from 9am until 11 a.m. in an effort to beat the heat.   Gloves, snacks and drinks will be provided. Lunch will also be provided after the clean up to all volunteers.   Rice began the monthly cleanup effort several months ago and has had her crews picking up bags of garbage around various parts of town. After having been closed the past 15 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Douglas Art Gallery on 10th Street is back open and once again displaying exhibits.   The Douglas Art Association, which manages The Gallery through volunteers, recently elected a new board of directors. Pat Geymont is the new president; Lucinda Gonzalez, vice president; Susan Molina, secretary; Jim Geymont, treasurer, and Onitz Nieves, director.   Geymont said despite being closed for so long, the bills continued coming in to the point it was getting fairly expensive to remain closed.   And now, there’s an art exhibit on display at The Gallery courtesy of April Zevenbergen Hudgins, who is new to Douglas.   Zevenbergen Hudgins, who describes herself as a “Christian artist” was born and raised in Hawaii. While attending high school there she was discovered by her high school art teacher and recommended for an apprenticeship with legendary Hawaiian artist Herb Kane.   She says it was through this apprenticeship she gained exponential skill as she worked for months on a large mural with Kane in her high school gym. She says she was taught many techniques on the mural and to this day has the style and ability to produce very large mural sized pieces of art. She says she loves the freedom of painting on a large canvas.   Zevenbergen Hudgins lived in Okinawa, Japan, for three years where she focused on her art and further developed her artistic talent.   Zevenbergen Hudgins has exhibited her art in other cities. This is her first time showing in Douglas.   The Gallery is now open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Receptions normally take place on Saturdays. And face coverings are optional.   But volunteers are still needed. So anyone interested in helping out can stop by The Gallery and talk to the staff about how to get involved.   -   Finally, today we’re remembering the life of    Linus Edward Hennessey of Huachuca City. Linus was born August 4, 1924 in Leavenworth Kansas. Linus was the sixth of nine children. He served in the Merchant Marines for 4 years and then joined the U.S. Navy. He also served from 1942 to 1976 on active duty and fought in WWII and the Korean War.   He married Theresa M. Dunne in 1953 and they traveled throughout his Navy career in all parts of the world before finally retiring in Connecticut where they raised their family of six children.    After serving 30 plus years of military service on submarines and recruiting, he went onto Federal Law Enforcement for both the Navy and Coast Guard for an additional 20 years.   A committed Catholic, Linus was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a great-great grandfather.    Linus spent his last 20 years residing in Arizona and was a committed altar server with the Good Shepherd Mission, a 3rd degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and an avid reader. He also enjoyed traveling back and forth from Connecticut to Arizona and visiting relatives.
