Quote

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing."

Ideas

1

How we react to ideas in universities is often an early indicator of what happens in other places of society.
Universities are one of the key areas in society where it is institutionalised to think, discuss and advance ideas that are meaningful to the rest of society.

So being acutely aware of what's happening in the discussion and idea space at universities, is an important way to get to any problematic behaviours earlier, rather than later.

2

In any conflict, it's often the crazier side that wins.
When you're willing to go to lengths that others aren't, you often cause so much discomfort and fear, that the other party does whatever you want, for you to go away.

This is precisely what's happening with many people attempting to cancel others in places like universities.

People are willing to go to extreme lengths just to cancel someone else, that the universities just suspend or fire the lecturer because they don't want to deal with all the trouble, even if there's no strong reason to do so.

3

Saying nothing is actually saying something.
When something needs to be said, silence is just as bad as saying the wrong thing.

Choosing to stay silent when something goes wrong just because it doesn't affect us is precisely what allowed things to go wrong in the first place.

And without people speaking up, we can't make any progress, which means this same problem will eventually come back around to bite us.
