Ideas

1

A lot of the issues, particularly ones to do with Native life, are often only talked about in the past tense.
So when Layli wrote her book, she wanted all of the issues she talks about, to be within living memory, to avoid the sort of nostalgic depiction of many of these issues that have impacted the present.

For Layli; what she desires the most, is to be a part. Not necessarily be all of something, but just to be some of something. A piece combined with others to make up a whole.

Talking about issues such as what happened to the Native people of North America with the arrival of the Europeans, for the Native people, is not only an important to a process of healing, but also a sense of justice, of being heard.
And on the other hand, for non-Native people, hearing these narratives and engaging in a conversation, is not about guilt or shame, but about freedom from denial, it brings about liberation.

3

Through writing, she learned about the reward and joy that comes out of just being really patient with a piece of writing and with yourself.
For Layli, the imagination is something that we have to respect, like it is its own little person inside of us.

Sometimes we have to let it take a rest, and then come back and be in conversation with it again.
