Episode 48: Show me the money!

Show me
the money! We are talking monetizing tabletop gaming in this episode. We have
seen the rise of prize pools in recent years for tabletop tournaments. Flights
to other events, box sets and now cash prizes are coming in thick and fast so
we decided to deep dive on the topic and see what shakes loose.

We have
to congratulate the Australian ETC team for 2019 who managed an amazing effort
to finish 4th of the 36 teams only missing out on the top spot in a
nail biter against England. I wonder if the teams made some new ashes to share and
compete for in coming years? Regardless this is the best result we have managed
since Australia started going in 2012.

If you are keen to see the Pro Tabletop set up you can find the link HERE – the site covers the gaming mat, terrain, event timing and rulings and more. It’s a really interesting and polarizing format and plan for sure – the internet has been rife with opposed views, feedback and more.

What do you think of cash prizes for tabletop
events? Does the idea of cash prizes bother you or would you be more likely to
attend as a result? How much is an acceptable ticket price for an event giving
away thousands of dollars in cash? We would love to hear about your experiences
and hear your feedback on this contentious topic – we want to hear from you!

Episode 47: Soul Reaver

With the last episode covering the new Ynnari rules, Emma threw down the gauntlet to Mike to actually take the army to an event – well not only did that happen but they got painted before hand! Episode 47 sees Mike take on the role of the Soul Reaver and lead the Ynnari to war against the forces of Great Enemy, the Imperium and more at a local 4 game, mono faction event!

We take a quick look back at some of the latest news from Games Workshop including the War Cry releases (so good!), the new rules for Forge World Knights in Warhammer 40k and the new models for Necromunda Enforcers. Be sure to head to the Warhammer Community site for all your Games Workshop News.

Sadly, the gaming community also lost a public figure in recent days with the passing of Geoff Robinson, member of the Warhammer TV commentary team at the 2019 LVO, winner of the 2019 Bay Area Open (BAO) and all round nice guy. You can find links to Geoffs charity of choice in the Warhammer community article here. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

If you are interested in a copy of the TTPG (or Tabletop Tournament Prep Guide) you can grab a copy HERE or you can join our Patreon HERE and get it for free.

Are you as excited as Mike for the next stage of the Aeldari evolution in following the word of Ynnead? Has the thought of a Wraithseer got you all worked up (it has mike!)? Are Howling Banshees a thing now (or is that another Mike thing?)? Do you know what the intro to the episode is from? We would love to hear about your experiences – we want to hear from you!

Episode 46: Rebirth

The rebirth
of ancient days for the Aeldari people could very well be just on the horizon…
assuming you believe the crazed followers of the eldar god of the dead and
their creepy androgynous space elf ghost monster thing! That said, the Yncarne is
all kinds of terrifying so I understand wanting to appease it and just agree
with the ideas presented! Its even more understandable if you ever built its
model!

We take a
quick chat about the new game Warcry that’s all the rage right now and all set
for release (expect a more comprehensive episode about this game soon!) and
then do our usual chat session about the new releases, whats coming up and take
all the usual tangents that make an ObSec episode what it is before we focus up
and delve into the Ynnari.

You can check out the As a Man podcast here (head to their facebook page and give them a like while you are at it!) and check out the push up challenge here.

We take a
deep dive into one of the most complex and controversial factions in 40k today –
the Ynnari, checking out just where they came from, what they do and what makes
them tick in the new index rules. Relics, Warlord Traits, Psychic Powers, Stratagems
and Tactical Objectives are all new additions to
this polarising faction and we delve into them with the strength of death
itself!

Do you follow the word of ynnead? Have
you faced the new forces of the ynnari and felt the force of soulburst up
close? What units are you excited to see on the table again thanks to the god
of the dead? We would love to hear about your experiences – we want to hear
from you!

Episode 45: Apocalypse Now

The Apocalypse
is here! Or rather, the previews are and we are super excited! Here at Objective
Secured we have run an annual Apocalypse game with close friends so the big
toys come out to play and with this new release, that might not be just an
annual thing – we even have plans for an event!

We talk some contrast paint experiences first – about our delayed preorder and then about some of the challenges with this ‘new’ paint range. Once the Ravenguard are close to battle ready you can expect photos and how to’s for this tabletop army.

You can have a laugh at Games Workshops early TV ads for Space Crusade and Hero Quest at these links.

We take a look at the Apocalypse previews, the new website with how to play video and more. The data sheets are all available right now as well and Mike gets a little bit worked up again at his Eldar getting the shorter end of the stick. That said, the game looks like a great way to get more tabletime with the big Forgeworld models so either way the titans will walk! You can check out the 1 minute 800 power deployment HERE.

We also have to give a shout out to the Astartes series on youtube – if you haven’t seen it already you really need to check it out.

Do you play larger games of 40k
already? Are you looking forward to the new edition of Apocalypse? Did you ever
play Epic 40,000 and can you see the similarities? We would love to hear about
your experiences – we want to hear from you!

Episode 44: Cut to the Chase

When you
say ‘Cut to the Chase’ its certainly not a phrase you would say is one the team
at ObSec do well! Ironically we kept this episode to about an hour and a half
so maybe we can cut to the chase sometimes!

This
episode sees us delve into the world of converting miniatures for organised
play events and just what the criteria might be for ObSec events – which then
might change when we have officially sanctioned support!

We take a look at some of the strict official formats from Privateer Press, Fantasy Flight Games and Games Workshop and then take a look at how ObSec differs when we have our own control for event format. Common sense is the order of the day here but it’s amazing how close the formats all line up. You can check out some of the variations in the SHO2019 players packs!

We also have to give a shout out to the Astartes series on youtube – if you haven’t seen it already you really need to check it out. Mike fanboy’d out over the last episode and it’s even worse with part 4. If you ever wanted to see how Adeptus Astartes might move and fight this is the series for you. Mike certainly didn’t get close while in cosplay!

Do you convert your models in anyway?
What about scratch builds? How much conversion should count as converted? We would
love to hear about your experiences – we want to hear from you!

Episode 43: Its SHO Time!

The third
annual Southern Hemisphere Open has come and gone and its time to talk about
the event, what went on and where we might take things going forward. While we
intended to have the whole episode recorded on site, it was an ambitious plan
which didn’t really work. Despite this we have cut up the audio we got on the
weekend and then recorded a debrief of sorts to share with you all!

With a
con in full swing, the 4 interviews we managed to get are not perfect audio
wise and the interference on the day hasn’t helped either but Mike did his best
to clean it up and make it as clear as possible.

We talk about some of the trials and
tribulations of the event, its planning and then of course the 5 days of
madness – Bump in, 3 days of con and then Bump out. You likely saw us regularly
via the facebook live streams over the weekend and we only get more bedraggled
as the days go on! The conversation moves about a bit because we are still so
tired but we drop a few hints for new events, things we hope to achieve for
SHO2020 and more.

Did you attend SHO 2019? What did you think of the new venue and time of year? What could we add or do at the event to make it even better for you? We would love to hear about your experiences – we want to hear from you!

Episode 42: Big Yellow Bus

Trying to
avoid the Big Yellow Bus is half the battle when it comes to team events – or is
it? Sometimes you need to get thrown under that oncoming bright yellow metal
monstrosity to make sure your team makes the grade… but that’s just one part of
the chat! We are talking team events off the back of the ANZTC 40k event that
ran the 18/19th May 2019.

Congratulations to team QLD on their 1st place for 2019 and to my own home states team – who placed 2nd overall only losing at the final hurdle vs those pesky queenslanders! The WA boys did our state proud. Full event results can be found HERE

We talk about some of the challenges of
making a team event happen from the organisers perspective but also from a
players. Just what do you need to consider when making a team? How do you get
the right mix of players and just whats at stake when you agree to play for a
team? With so many opportunities to travel to play, team events are a great way
to build friendships and bonds that extend well past the usual hobby friends –
we recommend you play one if you get the chance!

Have you been part of a team event? Local,
national or international? Are you interested in joining the ObSec team as part
of a road trip to the USA, Europe or anywhere else for that matter? We would
love to hear about your experiences – we want to hear from you!

Episode 40: SHO me what you got

SHO you what we got perhaps! Episode 40 sees us answer the call from the giant head in the sky and answer its call – “Show me what you got!” – we have just taken that to mean SHO! 2019 sees the 3rd annual Southern Hemisphere Open so it’s a great chance to share with you some of the trials and tribulations of the past events and what we might look at in future.

We kick off the episode talking about the ‘Best in the West’ Painting competition here in Perth, Western Australia (with a pretty epic young blood entry – see below!) as well as some amazing work from super talented hobbyists from the WA scene. Check out the full range of pics HERE.

From there (after one of my favourite interludes we have recorded) we delve into the past, present and future of SHO, some of the trials and tribulations we have faced and what the future might look like for our premier gaming event on the ObSec calendar. Just make sure which one of us is having the days break down before you ask us a question! You can get your SHO tickets HERE

Episode 39: Trial and Error

Not content with episode 38’s mere 2 hours long, we up the ante with a monstrous 3 hour follow up to the Genestealer Cult review with this look at Mikes own cult forces, with the list being discussed in depth in preparation for the Outpost 6030 Skulls Autumn 40k event – as well as looking at it post event when the last dice has been rolled… a true Trial and Error development!

The first
half sees us look at the planned list, focusing on the choices being made, some
of the combos that have crept in and Mikes general infatuation with the Rusted
Claw cult creed. As the episode goes on, you can hear the tonal shift and all
of a sudden Emma triggers an ‘ah ha’ moment and the list quickly morphs – but what
will it finish up as?

The
second half of the episode looks at just that – what actually got taken to the
event and why as well as a wrap up of the 4 games played – the opponents
armies, missions, learnings and more. We also explore the future of the cult
for Mike and its presence with him at the helm in the Perth event scene going
forward.

If you want to get your own cult infantry painted super quickly – try out this technique from Warhammer TV!

Have you faced the horrors of the
Genestealer Cult in its latest iteration and if so, how did you fare? Did the
blips and ambush mess with your plans for victory? Did the waves of clawed
horrors triumph against you? We would love to hear about your experiences – we
want to hear from you!
