In this, the penultimate episode of Just One of the Guys, I and my Alpha and Omega co-host Thomas Deja take a look at issue 180 of Green Lantern. Having taken fellow GL John Stewart’s advice, Kyle heads out to L.A. to meet with his mother, eat an omelette, and say a final, FINAL farewell to his lost loves, Donna Troy and Alex Dewitt (Wait, Donna is dead?!? When the heck did this happen?!?). But the issue doesn’t spend all its time on dwelling on Kyle’s female realtionships as it quickly switches to an out and out horror movie with the masked killer being none other than Major Force! And if you think that there might be another incident with a kitchen appliance that will raise the hackles of Gail Simone, well you might just be on to something. As we draw closer and closer to the final story in the 1990’s Green Lantern run, Just One of the Guys takes a look at issue 179 of the book, where a weary, frustrated, and down right pissed off Kyle Rayner decides to go directly to the source of his problems and make like Rowdy Roddy Piper sans bubble gum (Rest in peace, good sir). Things start ramping up here on Just One of the Guys as we edge closer and closer to the end of Volume Three of Green Lantern. In issue 178, we get Kyle having to face down one of his greatest adversaries…no, not Grayven…or Purgatory…DEFINITELY not Ohm, but Fatality, the last survivor of the doomed planet Xanshi and fabled killer of Green Lanterns, FATALITY! And armed with some psychotropic darts that totally mess with Kyle’s perception, it looks like the murderous maiden might actually accomplish her mission of taking Kyle out (although you can probably imagine that doesn’t happen as it would be awkward to have three issues of Fatality gloating over Kyle’s death). But thankfully, Ron Marz is on the book, and he makes the best out of what was done to Jenny by “The Writer Who Shall Not Be Named” (Go away…). Plus we get some stellar art by Luke Ross who actually sells the drama of Kyle and Jenny’s final farewells. The book is back on track for what looks to be a solid, satisfying wrap up of not only Kyle’s run, but also the end of the “Chromium Age” of comics. With Kyle found out as Strawberry Shadowhawk, he has to finally face down Amon Sur, leader of the Black Circle, as well as find a way to destroy the Qwardian Quantum Singularity Generator that is threatening to destroy Oa and bring the Qwardians into the matter universe, Also, there’s some amount of resolution between Terry Berg and his parents over his decision to leave for his job in L.A. But this doesn’t mean that this issue is free of wonkiness. In fact, I have to wonder how the issue’s WTF ending was supposed to lead into the next book. Oh well, at least it’s all over, and next time out Ron Marz comes back! HOORAY!!! Still slogging through the Ben Raab run on Green Lantern, we’re finally nearing the end in issue 174 of the book. Now that Salmon Shadowhawk, a.k.a. Vasquez, a.k.a. Green Lantern Kyle Rayner has ingratiated himself with Amon Sur and the Black Circle, you’d think he wouldn’t do something stupid like reveal his secret identity to the bounty hunter that was chasing him down over the past few issues. Well, you’d be wrong, because Ben Raab is writing this book and he’s bound and determined to make EVERY character in this book act like a complete idiot. Or in the case of Jenny Lynn Hayden, a complete tramp who feels the need to spy on her boyfriend…no not Kyle, her OTHER boyfriend…who just happens to be as much of a philanderer as she is. GRRRrrrr!!! But to soften the blow, we do get some improved artwork by one of my favorite current artists, Jamal Igle, so that helps soften the blow. And we only have one more issue of this, so things are looking up. Plus we get a resolution to the job search for John Stewart’s girlfriend, Merayn, as well as Jenny trying desparately to get Hottie McEmeraldFever to give her a little “sumthin’ sumthin'”. I can only imaging there are brothel workers who would look at this portrayal and say, “Well, at least I’m not THAT much of a whore.” … … … So if you want to hear me rant about how awful a comic is, this is one that even rivals the truly horrendous issue 37. Kyle, in his Raspberry Shadowhawk disguise, tries to prove that he’s worthy for membership in the Black Circle crime organization by hunting down a villanous squid who decapitates people with pink ninja stars. Yes, you read that correctly. And THIS is one of the better books in Ben Raab’s run. Plus, as a palate cleanser, I’m also taking a look at the very trippy story Green Lantern: Willworld. For some reason, Hal Jordan has been transported into a strange world populated with immense Buddha-like characters, talking grasshoppers, and giant floaty heads. No, seriously…not like the Guardians, but giant disembodied heads. It’s like writer J.M. DeMatteis wanted to set Green Lantern in the Yellow Submarine movie. Not that that is a bad thing. Seriously, Kyle is off in space trying to be a hero and Jenny can’t NOT f*ck someone for the limited time he’s gone?!? … … Sorry, it’s just really hard to be positive about these books right now. Our look at the Green Lantern books in the Benjamin Raab era hits a little bumpy patch with this week’s issue, a story entitled “Deicide”. While still on the lookout for Amon Sur and the Black Circle, Kyle runs across a planet that was terrorized by supposed rouge Green Lanterns, and he ends up having to attempt to kill the planet’s deity in order to appease the populace. Plus we get to see some of the goings on on Earth, with Terry talking to an obvious Larry King analogue and Merayn getting sexually harrassed at a job inteview. Yeah, the cracks are starting to show, but still not nearly as bad as I’ve been lead to believe. Ben Raab continues his run on Green Lantern with issue #167, part two of a story about “The Blind” a cosmic entity that likes to destroy suns, but is vastly different from the Sun Eater, I can certainly say that. Plus Kyle has to take on a female…male…I don’t know, the alien’s look is somewhat ambiguous version of Boba Fett. At least in that the character is conisdered to be a famous bounty hunter, yet gets taken out pretty handedly. So unless you wnt your leg humped by a giant horny cat alien, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and start to listening! *

Yes, I know that is a trite cliché, and I’m sorry I have to use it again, but things keep changing in the Green Lantern books, and so it also must on JUST ONE OF THE GUYS. This time out, in Green Lantern #165, the change is a new creative team in writer Ben Raab and artist Rick Burchett and a new story with Kyle attempting to recruit a new Green Lantern Corps in order to hunt down Amon Sur and the Black Circle. There’s an introduction of a character that’ll make his way into the current run of Green Lantern seeded in the book…and there’s also some truly punny tales in there as well. Is the Ben Raab run going to lead to the downfall of the series like so many have told me? We’ll just have to find out together. The Black Circle: Urban Knights story rolls along (you see…it’s a pun) on this Friday’s episode of JUST ONE OF THE GUYS: A GREEN LANTERN PODCAST. First, in Green Arrow #24 we get introduced to Amon Sur, son of the former GL of Sector 2814 and law enforcement officer in his own right, who teams up with our heroes to take out the intergalactic drug cartel. Then in Green Lantern #163 we see just how well an old man like Oliver Queen stacks up against a warehouse full of blaster armed extraterrestrials. No spoilers, but he pretty much mops the floor with them. And it wouldn’t be a proper Green Lantern/Green Arrow crossover on Just One of the Guys without a guest spot from one of the hosts of the Relatively Geeky Podcast Network, Professor Alan Middleton. And it was quite a coup to have him on, as these books were acquired for nearly five times the amount that he has to pay for his own books, something that DiManziCorp is filing reimbursement papers for as we speak. It’s nearly closing time for Judd Winick on the Green Lantern books, and Ben Raab is poised to step in and tell his stories. But before we get to that, we’ve got the final Green Lantern/Green Arrow crossover in the JUST ONE OF THE GUYS era, which surprisingly features books by both Judd winick and Ben Raab. In issue #23 of Green Arrow, we get newly back from the dead archer, Oliver Queen, doing what he normally does…taking down some drug smuggling goons. But for some reason these goons are smuggling high grade bleach. Weird…Meanwhile, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner has a run in with some aliens who are doing dirty deals with the mob, which leads to the inevitable GL/GA team up…which doesn’t go as well as it did back in the Hal and Ollie days. And in issue #162 of Green Lantern the plot thickens as Conner Hawke breaks up the Ollie and Kyle tussle and Kyle makes friends with some DiManzo “relations”…if you know what I mean. Plus, I’m joined by first time guest and host of The Invincible Ironcast: Classics Edition, Mr. Michael Staley who brings his fandom of Green Arrow to the show. This time out on JUST ONE OF THE GUYS we get into an issue that wraps up Kyle tracking down an Amazon stripper with immeasurable power who just might be a rapidly matured Guardian of the Universe baby. Plus Ganthet magics away all the destruction from last issue, and the big reveal that Jenny told to Kyle is wiped away like it had zero meaning. It’s some really lazy writing in the last days of the Winick run, and I hope this isn’t an indicator for how the rest of the series will go. So unless you want to be hung upside down all Wampa cave style and stared at by a stunted stripper, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and start to listening. *

Just One of the Guys Episode #161

My favorite Two True Freaks show, which is really saying something considering all the great shows on that network!  Shawn decided to put the spotlight on his favorite Green Lanterns, Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner, at a time when Hal Jordan was getting the spotlight.  He did this by reviewing the entire Green Lantern Vol. 3 series, Guy Gardner: Warrior, and many other related appearances of Guy, Kyle, and other Green Lanterns.  Now I am trying to collect all of these comic books, mainly because I want to hear his insightful and hilarious commentary after I read them.  I&#39;m still in the early episodes, but I definitely want to listen to every one of them, so I&#39;m thankful that they are still available!  Sadly, Shawn has since passed away, but he is one of my favorite podcasters and this show is an awesome companion to the comic books!
