Even through the "drinking" years, Steve had the presence of mind to start recording and saving his shows. The early shows were recorded on a Betamax and then later on VHS machines. That was the only way to record an entire 4 1/2-hour show without having to remember to change tapes every hour. Subscribers are now the beneficiaries of Steve's foresight with the weekly Descent. From WDAI to the Steve and Garry years to Steve solo on WCKG, The Descent Into The Archives is vintage Steve Dahl.

Rank #1: Jay Leno - October 13, 1983

Steve and Garry used to be tight with Jay Leno back in the day. He would play Zanies on Wells Street. He would sometimes bring in Fireplace Inn ribs, and just generally made everybody laugh. Then he got the Tonight Show, and there was some distance. Sad...

Steve has always suspected it's because he and Garry did that week of late night on CBS. Not that they were any threat to The Tonight Show, but Jay did send them an oddly mean note. They got a nice one from Arsenio, though.

Rank #2: Necco Wafers Work In Toll Baskets?

Steve and Garry never liked working on Saturdays, but when they did, they made sure to leave a mark. Steve reveals the Necco Wafers in the toll basket idea. He got it from two members of Teenage Radiation. Stan went to get ribs. Has Steve been drinking? Janet wants to know!

This Saturday show was engineered by the late great George Sarantos. One of our favorite engineers of all time. Saturdays were mostly about economics (paycheck), but in a weird way, they were the most fun. No pressure, and we  got to watch Dance Fever.
