Quite simply, the best kaiju-related podcast out there. Copious historical/cultural background and in-depth insights are given, providing even hardcore fans with new material. There's enough of the usual production history for casual fans, but this is a podcast meant to be savored by those looking to go beyond the usual production histories most genre pods concentrate on. AND they have top notch music and production values, and a release schedule that never misses. In my opinion, a must-listen for kaiju fans.

This is a monster of a podcast...

Rank #1: Episode 45: Matango (1963)

Hop aboard the Affluenza Maru (or the S.S. Affluenza) for this morality fable.  It’s a Kaijuvision Christmas! Coincidentally, I’m doing the movie that decries consumerism during the busiest shopping period of the year.  Matango, the most Hitchcockian movie of this season, is a monumental achievement by Ishiro Honda and company. Your band name of the day: Skulking Transitional Matango.  Listen as I connect Matango to The Grinch, Gilligan’s Island, The Odyssey, Metropolis, and South Park!  The related topics for this episode are Westernization and globalization, which the movie alludes to at the very end.

This episode is dedicated to renowned producer Tomoyuki Tanaka.

I’d like to send a shout-out to our patron Sean Stiff for donating at the Kaiju Visionary level. Thank you for your support! I really appreciate it.

At last, it is time. Fasten your seat belts, kaiju fans.  It’s like this movie was made for our show.  Just as we were planning a podcast emphasizing the connection between the Godzilla franchise and international affairs, this masterpiece was delivered to us on a silver platter.  This episode is our masterpiece.  After our film description, part two is our opinion on the big picture of this incredible movie.  Part three is a detailed chronological rundown of the film, and we will tie it to the events of 3/11.  Our related topics are the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdowns.

This episode is dedicated to the victims of the 3/11 disaster, Plant Manager Masao Yoshida, the Fukushima 50, the U.S. service members who participated in Operation Tomodachi, U.S. Forces Japan, and the JSDF.

We’d like to send a shout-out to our patron Kyoei Toshi and Sean Stiff for pledging at the Kaiju Visionary level.  Thank you for your support!  We really appreciate it.

The first Mechagodzilla film is roughly a spoof of James Bond and a twist on The Planet of the Apes, only the apes are alien invaders! The soundtrack fits like a glove to this gloriously campy and fun movie, made to celebrate Godzilla’s 20th anniversary.  Because this movie features an Okinawan kaiju, King Caesar, our related topic is the history and culture of Okinawa. Join Nate and Brian as they continue on with 70s Month – every 70s movie in the series in just one month. This episode is dedicated to Shinichi Sekizawa.

Road to Shin Godzilla Month has begun! We’re counting down to our big episode on Godzilla’s latest reboot, starting with the “Kiryu Saga.”  Brian and Nate get a little Siskel & Ebert-ish as they discuss the second entry in the “Tezuka Trilogy,” which features the third incarnation of Mechagodzilla.  The movie has great cinematography and characters and some fun kaiju action, but Nate thinks the story missed some great potential with its wonderful new concept for Mechagodzilla.  Since this film once again features a strong female lead, our related topics are women in the Godzilla films and the firing of Makiko Tanaka.

Filmed and released during the Japanese stock market crash, this movie perfectly captures the Japanese national spirit at the time it was made. In 1991, just like after World War II ended, the Japanese people collectively asked “How could this happen?” In fact, Miki Saegusa says that herself. While the symbolism isn’t very subtle either, this movie is not anti-American. Our related topics are nationalism and the US-Japan difficulties reaching a peak regarding trade.

This film was released in late 1991, and if you can find that year on this graph of the Japanese Nikkei 225 stock market average, you will notice that’s at a very pivotal and scary time for Japan.

For this week’s episode, we present Brian’s favorite Godzilla movie! Though it’s an underrated movie, it sold the most tickets of any of the late Showa series movies (after 1968). It’s also filmed well, full of action, yet also cerebral. The movie contains a story with multi-layered symbolism, yet it has lots of fire, explosions, and monster fights. Plus it’s infused with the Japanese National Spirit. Listen to Nate and Brian synthesize everything fascinating about this movie. Our related topics are the symbolism of Godzilla vs. Gigan and the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics. Our 4k video for this episode was made at a location much farther away from home than usual: New York state.

Turn of the Millennium Month comes to an end as Nate and Brian discuss an outlier of the Millennium Series and one of the highest-rated films in the franchise.  Directed by Shusuke Kaneko, the mastermind behind the acclaimed Heisei Gamera Trilogy, this is a complex film meditating on deep themes while also featuring incredible kaiju action, special effects, music, and characters.  It dared to make Godzilla purely evil and King Ghidorah a hero along with Mothra and Baragon (who’s sadly left out of the film’s mouthful of a title).  You’ll learn the “secret origins” of our podcast, which stems from us discussing GMK on our friends’ podcast several years ago.  Our related topics are the election of Koizumi, the U.S.S. Greenville collision, and the many events of 2001.

Turn of the Millennium Month continues with the first of three Godzilla movies which are directed by Masaaki Tezuka and becomes the standard bearer for the Millennium Series. Brian proclaims that this movie is fantastic because Tezuka brings back many stylistic elements from the Showa series. Overall, we rate this movie as fun, smart, and ahead of its time. We pay particular attention to the Dimension Tide (the black hole gun), what Godzilla’s body slam in the fight is referencing, and how many of the Heisei issues have been fixed. Brian explains to Nate how this isn’t a revenge story (though our main character is motivated by revenge). Our related topics are Energy Use and Energy Independence in Japan and Prime Minister Mori’s gaffe.

For a long time, this movie retained a part where the director said “Action” at the beginning of a scene. That fact is an indication that this movie was rushed as well as a bit careless, but it’s not all bad – and it can be funny. So funny in fact, it was a popular episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Brian and Nate discuss the infamous car chase, Easter Island, superhero wrestling action, and everything else about this glorious train-wreck. Our related topic is the history and effects of nuclear testing.

Correction: We originally said that the director said “Cut” at the end of a scene in the movie. He actually said “Action” at the beginning of a scene.

Godzilla not only looks great in this movie, but he gets more screen time than any other movie in the entire series. Baby Godzilla looks impressive, and the Azusa Gojo character is good. Brian and Nate address topics, like how stuff explodes when Rodan flies over it, how Kazuma seems to be a Japanese Rick Moranis, and how Miki Saegusa needed to be reminded to use her psychic powers.  Our related topic is the relocation of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

Our trek through the Heisei Series continues!  After watching experimental weirdness and convoluted time-travel, Nate and Brian cover a Godzilla film that’s a bit more “normal”—for this franchise, anyway.  It’s the most successful film in the Heisei Series, and we see more positives than negatives in this 1990s update of the classics.  The movie features Akira Takarada, the return of Mothra, a weaponized Ferris wheel, and scenes ripping off Indiana Jones (the last one drives Nate crazy).  We also compare Battra to Mirror Universe Spock.  Our related topics are contemporary environmentalism and the Lost Decade.

We’d like to send a shout-out to our patrons Kyoei Toshi and Sean Stiff for pledging at the Kaiju Visionary level. Thank you for your support! We really appreciate it.
