Elizabeth is great. I love how she gets right to the point on accountability, how to make meaningful changes (in whatever area of life you want!) and maintain them. I especially love the way she talks about limiting beliefs- very powerful. She’s genuine and thoughtful and always pushes my thinking.

Two of the biggest threats to your metabolism & overall health are chronic stress and overeating. Interestingly, chronic stress drives overeating and overeating creates additional stress. It's what's known as a "feed forward" cycle.

In today's episode we're talking about how stress (physical and emotional) drives appetite and cravings while impairing your ability to make sound decisions.

Most importantly, we'll be talking about dietary and lifestyle changes you can make to not only reduce the chronic stressors in your life but also improve your response to them.

Want to know how to eat carbs without getting fat? Today's episode is all about what happens when you eat carbs and strategies for eating them in a way that reduces the chances they'll be converted to & stored as fat. Plus, we'll talk about the common mistakes that create an internal environment where even small amounts of carbs you consume are converted to & stored as fat.

Carbs aren't bad. That's just not true. The flip side of that is that they are not an essential fuel source, despite what you might have heard. They are, however, quite yummy and can be enjoyed in a way that doesn't lead to weight gain. We're clearing all this up in today's episode so don't miss it!

Rank #5: 360: Taking Control of Your Life

Podcast cover
Read more

In today's episode I share a conversation with one of my Masters Club clients. When I asked her about the most significant changes she's made in her life, she shared how she's now certain that she is in control of her life. She's in control of her food choices, her physique, her career, finances and much more.

Our discussion centers around a few follow-up questions: did you always feel like you had that control? And: how did you create it? How has that sense of control impacted how you take care of your body?

Specifically, we talked about how she transitioned to feeling limited because of her circumstances to feeling empowered regardless of her circumstances.

Then we got talking about her struggles. She isn't seeing the physical progress she knows she is capable of and she feels like she needs more standards for herself when it comes to food. We quickly got to the root of the problem: eating too much of the "right" things. She's improved the quality of what she's eating, but the quantity is probably a bit much for her goals.

Together, we established a strategy for paying more attention to how much she's eating versus how much she needs to eat.

Don't miss today's conversation!

I don't think any of us would argue that having more self control would be a positive change in our lives. But, easier said than done, right?

In today's podcast I'm helping you understand effective and ineffective ways to build more self control and I'm also sharing a willpower challenge that will help you make this a more concrete, tangible objective.

How To Build More Self-Control

"If you conquer yourself, you can conquer the world" Paulo Coelho

If you rule over yourself, there is no door that won't open for you.

Today I'm sharing a 7-day willpower challenge and explaining how we can be smart about our attempt to build more self-control.

Here are a few key points from today's episode:

Self control builds self-esteem, not the other way around! If you want more self-esteem, build more self-control.

Will power gets stronger with use. Repeat decisions require less and less energy

Are you creating a willpower deficit? Identify opportunities to operate from a place of strength as opposed to constant willpower depletion.

What does meditation have to do with weight loss? Anything?

I say with strong conviction: a lot!

First and foremost, meditation decreases cortisol levels. Chronically elevated cortisol levels impair decision making, increase hunger, increase cravings, impair sleep and blunt insulin responsiveness.

But: meditation takes time. It's hard. Most people suck at it. Those are the most common objections I hear.

If you've ever had those frustrations or if you've wondered about meditation, you will want to hear this episode!

Rank #9: 246: 5 Dietary Changes For Faster Results

Podcast cover
Read more

If you feel stuck, frustrated, confused or like you aren't seeing the progress you want, don't miss these 5 dietary changes for faster results.

The key to today's episode lies in not seeking new information but in measuring your own consistent implementation of what you already know but aren't yet doing.

http://primalpotential.com/246-5-dietary-changes-for-faster-results/

5 Dietary Changes For Faster Results

Often, we sift through information evaluating what we know instead of what we're consistently doing.

If we know something already, we gloss over it, whether we're consistently doing it or not.

Today that stops. As you listen to these 5 dietary changes for faster results, I don't want you thinking of what you know or what you don't, I want you evaluating what you're doing consistently and what you're not.

As you hear each strategy, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I doing this?
  • Am I doing it consistently?
  • Is there room for improvement?
  • How will I implement those improvements today?
  • How can I practice consistency with that improvement?

While there are dozens of dietary changes you could make to accelerate your fat loss progress or improve your body composition, today we're talking about the following:

  1. Stay off the hot mess express blood sugar roller coaster (especially in the morning)
  2. Slow down on the sweets (the more sweet you eat, the more sweet you crave - this is true whether it's a "healthy" sweet or not)
  3. Dial back on dairy (for more on dairy and fat loss, listen to episode 25 and 128)
  4. Limit labels - how much of the food you consume has a nutrition facts label and added ingredients? Do an inventory of the % of your intake that comes from something with a label and strive for an improvement. Eat more foods that have no label and eat fewer foods with labels.
  5. Stop snacking - snacking is often out of boredom/habit or because your meals aren't satisfying you for long enough. Either improve the composition of your meals so they satisfy you for longer (adding more non-starchy veggies, protein or whole-food fats) or increase awareness of when you're eating when not hungry.

Rank #19: 388: The Keto Reset Diet

Podcast cover
Read more

Today we have best selling author Mark Sisson on the show. Mark's book The Primal Blueprint was a game changer for me when I was initially adopting a primal way of eating. Today we're talking about his newest book, The Keto Reset Diet and how he thinks that phases of what I'll call "clean keto" are the next level of primal in terms of anti-aging, fat loss, performance, satiety & energy.

For an introduction to ketogenic diets, ketones and other general concepts, check out episode 387 of the podcast where I talk about this stuff from a high level to lay the foundation for today's episode.

For today, we're talking about why Mark considers keto phases the next level of primal, what kind of carb & protein limitations you'll need for success

Mark said a few super powerful things in the episode that I want to really highlight:

Building a fast metabolism as a health goal is completely flawed. Accelerated metabolic function accelerates again.

Guys, it's not that we need faster metabolisms. It's quite the opposite. We need more efficient metabolisms and we can create that with our food choices.

He also said, "When I'm keto, I'm barely keto & when I'm not, I'm barely not".

Do you know what that is? It's consistency. It's getting to a place where there aren't wild fluctuations in the quality & quantity of your diet. That's what we need to focus on more than an inconsistent extreme approach.

I strongly recommend you check out his  new book, The Keto Reset Diet & definitely take a listen to today's episode!

The mindset side of change cannot be overlooked. If you struggle with the consistency we talk about in today's episode, make sure you sign up for the free mindset masterclass next week!

Mindset Masterclass: http://primalpotential.com/bestrong

Key terms:

Ketosis is a state of metabolic efficiency where you are able to burn stored energy in the form of body fat and ketones & not be dependent on regular high carbohydrate meals to sustain your energy, mood and cognitive focus.

Ketones are an energy source just like carbs, fat & protein are energy sources. Ketones can be used by your brain, your heart, and your muscles. Ketones are produced by the liver as a byproduct of fat metabolism.

Ketones produced under certain conditions:

  • blood sugar is low
  • insulin is low
  • muscle & liver glycogen stores are low
