Rahul Moodgal - Master Fund Raiser (Capital Allocators, EP.87). Rahul Moodgal has spent 20 years as a fund raiser across long only strategies, hedge funds, fund of funds, customized solutions, start-ups, and non-profits. Collectively, Rahul has raised and helped raise $60 billion for firms since 2005. He started his career in the industry at powerhouse TT International, and later joined The Children’s Investment Fund (TCI) where he led the marketing effort that raised $20 billion in just 3½ years. Within TCI’s affiliate model, Rahul also was responsible for the largest India fund raise in history ($1 billion for TCI New Horizon Fund), and the largest sector fund launch in history ($1.1 billion for Algebris Investments). Our conversation covers capital raising lessons learned from teaching, the value of transparency, the gold rush before 2008, the lean times afterwards, modern fee structures, the three key points to effective marketing, the three traits that will kill you, the two biggest issues start-up funds face, the best questions asked by leading allocators, and some of the worst horror stories in attempted capital raising. We close comparing by fund raising for charities and investment firms. Rank #1: Ep. 282 - The Mike Pence Rule Strikes Again In A Sheriff's Office. Please support the show at https://www.patreon.com/friendlyatheistpodcastJessica and I sat down to talk about several stories from the past week involving religion and politics.— In New Zealand, evangelicals have a “trust” problem. (0:36)— Neil deGrasse Tyson‘s thoughtless tweet after last week’s mass shootings. (6:30)— Donald Trump hammed it up for a picture with the baby who’s now an orphan because of Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric. (21:45)— This Ohio lawmaker blamed the Dayton mass shooting on everything and everyone except guns. (26:59)— Mike Huckabee thinks more Jesus will prevent mass shootings. (29:29)— A Christian Cross in a Pennsylvania county’s logo isn’t promoting Christianity, a court says. (34:11)— A Christian sheriff says he was fired for his faith. It’s actually because he wouldn’t train a woman. (39:35)— Mike Pence has some horribly worded post-shooting advice. (46:00)— Does the Mormon Church deserve to be sued for lying to people? (48:15)— Most Catholics don’t believe in Eucharist, so why are they Catholic? (54:55)— Conservatives always offer “thoughts and prayers” in response to guns but never abortion. (1:02:26)— Joe Biden made a Bidenlike gaffe. (1:04:40)— The Boy Scouts have been sued for acting like the Catholic Church. (1:06:02)— Wanna do battle in the Times mini-crossword? Bring it.
Rank #2: Ep. 105 - Dr. Dawn Eden, Catholic Convert and Author. Dr. Dawn Eden was born into a Jewish family, became an Agnostic during her teenage years, and then found God and became a Catholic in her 30s. Along the way, she was a rock journalist and worked as an editor for the New York Post and Daily News. Since her conversion, she’s written several books including The Thrill of the Chaste and Remembering God's Mercy: Redeem the Past and Free Yourself from Painful Memories. She's also a long-time blogger at the Dawn Patrol. Before giving a talk at a church just outside of Chicago recently, we had 20 minutes to chat. We used the limited time to talk about her unique religious journey, whether allowing priests to have sex is a good idea, and how she arguably kickstarted my own career with one blog post. (As I make clear in the podcast, there were several points I would love to have pushed back on and debated further, but time didn't allow for it.)

Rank #1: The Humanist Hour #218: Vickie Stangl on Etta Semple. We act sometimes as though we think women are new to the freethought movement, to atheist and humanist leadership. We're not. We've been here all along, and we've never gone away. Our history has just sat in boxes, disregarded where it hasn't been thrown away altogether. Our stories have gone untold. This week's guest, Vickie Stangl, did something about that. In her book, Etta Semple: Kansas Freethinker and "Ideal" Woman, she took that history out of the archives and made it live. Etta Semple was the founder of the Kansas Freethought Association and a leader of both that organization and the American Secular Union. She started the Freethought Idea newspaper to challenge the ideas of a nation and managed to do it so successfully that she received death threats and a probable attempt on her life.Semple is far too interesting to be lost to history. This week, Vickie Stangl joins Peggy Knudtson to talk about the book and about what we need to know to protect Semple's legacy.
Rank #2: The Humanist Hour #217: Vic Wang and Benita Malone on Humanists of Houston. The Humanists of Houston are American Humanist Association's largest local chapter and they're on pace to become the largest secular movement Meetup group very shortly. They've achieved that growth largely through reaching out to groups that we don't often see at humanist meetings, through executing strategies that some people try to tell us will drive people away. This week, Vic Wang, president of Humanists of Houston, and Benita Malone, volunteer coordinator, join the Humanist Hour to talk about embracing diversity and social justice, making meetings and volunteer opportunities welcoming to younger members, implementing a code of conduct, and adopting a transparency that's radical for local groups.
