Really like and look forward to this podcast. I am a YWAM extended staff missionary and when I receive the most recent podcast I listen to it intently. Love hearing what my YWAM Family is up to! Bill Hutchinson clearly does a lot of research on the listener's behalf to come up with the latest news. Good sound bites, good show notes with a lot more information, good interviews. Good stuff!

I am thankful for this podcast - it provides an overview of the ways YWAM is serving the world, and the links to further information, videos and music are great. My daughter will be participating in YWAM next year, and reading about the many ways people are being cared for, served and loved through this organization around the world helps me understand her desire to serve with this group and helps me trust the leadership. I'm also able to pray for the work of the organization this way....many thanks to Bill Hutchison for putting it together.

Stories:

Bringing Justice to the Children of Amazonian Tribes in Brazil

In a recent article on the Foreign Policy Magazine web-site entitled “The Right to Kill – Should Brazil keep its Amazon tribes from taking the lives of their children?” (here).

I’ll be honest, I was rather shocked that was even a question that needs to be asked! I wasn’t the only one to find that question shocking, obviously, and the people over at Get Religion wrote up a good article about it as well…

Much of the article builds off of the work of missionaries and non-profits, and their work to eliminate infanticide among indigenous tribes in the Amazon. It includes reference to Hakani, who was a girl saved from being killed by her tribe, first by her brother, and then by YWAM Missionaries serving in Brazil …

Watch this video on YouTube.

As hard as it is to believe, there are some anthropologists and critics who believe that the tribes should be left alone, and let the children be killed as it is their “traditional custom and practice”, and any attempt to stop it is the equivalent of cultural colonialism. Others however rightly state that “Certain cultural practices here are incompatible with human rights, they need to be thwarted. There is no middle ground.”.

Thankfully even among other Amazonian Indians there is a general feeling of relief that this issue is being addressed …

Over 350 Indians, including chiefs from 7 tribes, gathered at the well-known Leonardo Outpost in Xingu Reservation for 2 days to discuss how indigenous families could be better educated about alternatives to infanticide. A follow-up meeting among health agents is presently being planned to strategize further. These are not efforts from outside groups imposing a course of action; these are the Indians themselves, taking responsibility for their own destinies and taking initiatives that will, in the end, benefit their tribal societies.

The example that Hakani was to the tribe that originally tried to kill her has inspired others from that tribe to seek medical attention for their children, rather than resort to infanticide.

More information about Hakani, and the Atini non profit that is still working for the rights of the indigenous childrenin Brazil on their web-site, atini.org.br.

Papua New Guinea has seen an outbreak of Polio in the Morobe Province. They will help health officials conduct a vaccine drive after a recent Polio outbreak, which is the first outbreak in the country since 1996. The virus was first discovered in a young boy in the Lufa Mountain settlement in Lae city.

YWAM Liberty Officially Commissioned

This month saw the retirement of the M/V Pacific Link from it’s service with YWAM Ships. She has been operating for 25-years in the Pacific, with stints in Tauranga, New Zealand, then Townsville, Australia, and finishing her service in Kona, Hawaii.

The Pacific Link was originally built as a Japanese fishing vessel, and then acquired by YWAM and been involved in many great ministry opportunities.

While the M/V Pacific Link was being retired, the YWAM Liberty was being officially commissioned.

The YWAM Liberty is YWAM’s first container ship. The ship provides a modular response to developmental needs, and the initiative will allow YWAM to increase the long-term engagement on remote islands.

The YWAM Liberty’s first deployment includes containers configured with medical supplies and a woodworking shop. In follow up deployments they plan to build out classrooms, accommodations, IT labs, and more …

Training

Podcasting in Missions Course

So I’ve been continuing to work on the development of the the Podcasting in Missions Course that we will be starting in September, which is only a month away!

I’ve been exploring more of the course that we will be working together on and these are some of the topics that will be covered:

  • Planning your Podcast
  • Developing quality and engaging content
  • Choosing the right equipment and software
  • Building a web-site for your podcast
  • Publishing your Podcast
  • Engaging with your audience

At the end of the three-month online course you will have released a podcast in support of your ministry centre or your personal ministry.

We will be connecting with each other weekly during the course so that we can help and support each other, and share ideas and resources whenever possible. During the course I will also be working on developing a new podcast about missions that I plan to launch near the end of the course. I’ve got a few ideas, but want to develop it with you so that we can walk through the steps together.

There is room in the course for eight students, and you can do the course from your own location as the training will be online, and the group sessions will be over Google Hangouts.

Check out ywampodast.com/course to sign up for more information about the course, and find out how you can get involved…

School of International Relations & Diplomacy (SIRD)

YWAM Harpenden running the SIRD from September to December of this year.

The School of International Relations and Diplomacy (SIRD) aims to equip students to engage confidently and implicationally with the dome of international relations and diplomacy within the sphere of government. The goal is that students will be able to reflect God’s heart and kingdom values as they serve, wrestle, and engage with very real issues and dilemmas that dominate the complex global sphere.

Out of the school they want to create and opportunity for students to engage in this particular field, to create an excitement, a confidence, an the ability to think implicationally though the dilemmas and hard questions that do not have easy answers, and to do so with integrity and grace.

Some of the topics and issues that the 12-weeks school will be looking at include:

  • Biblical view of the sphere of government, with a focus on international relations and diplomacy
  • Understanding political justice, international law, and their consequences
  • The rise and fall of the great empires found in the bible
  • The importance of history and its impact
  • The impact of Europ, the division of social, church, and government power
  • Human Rights and the violations thereof
  • Regional conflicts and terrorism
  • The rhetoric of religious extremism
  • The cause of conflict
  • Information and disinformation strategies
  • Current events and their cause and effect
  • more …

When I was in Switzerland they were running a similar course to this called the GIS, Government and International Studies. It was a facinating school, and out of it some of the participants were able to continue on to have internships with different politicians around the world, thus gaining an even deeper understanding of the process.

As we look around the world it’s pretty obvious that there is a need for Godly influence in the international relations and diplomacy, and this course looks like a great way to begin to gain a greater understanding of how to get involved.

Find out more on their web-site, ywamharpenden.org.

Rebuilding After the Typhoon

From the beginning of the rebuilding process in the Philippines YWAM has been in the midst of it.

We have been amazed by the Holy Spirit’s coordination of YWAM’s response. Although communication was severely limited, our local and international teams quickly found locations as well as ways to effectively reach out to the storm victims. It soon became clear that God was leading YWAM to four strategic centers: Tacloban City, Ormoc City, Bogo City in northern Cebu Island, and northern Panay Island. From these centers we can systematically adopt and engage in rehabilitation and restoration of the smaller surrounding communities.

YWAM in the Philippines is feeling that God is leading them not just to the initial rebuilding effort, but to the long-term rebuilding of communities, both practically and spiritually. Typhoon Haiyan not only knocked down many physical walls, but also seems to have knocked down the “spiritual” walls of the people.

There are many opportunities for YWAM teams to go into the Philippines to help with the rebuilding and relief work. The focus areas for the teams are Taclogan, Ormoc, Bogo and Bantayan Island, and Northern Panay Island.

You can find out more about the opportunities to help the relief work in the Philippines on the www.ywam.org.

Wings for Wheels – YWAM Riga, Latvia

Wings for Wheels is ministry in Riga, Latvia for people with mobile disabilities from age 18-60, who are living in their homes, often ‘forgotten’ by Latvian society and not getting enough attention from Christian society either.

Wings for Wheels goal is to challenge people with mobile disabilities to come out from their passive lifestyle and to show their abilities to improve their quality of life, which can help them integrate into society. At the same time YWAM is trying to get the attention of Christian society for this field, and to challenge them to reach out for these ‘hidden’ people group.

You can find out more about this ministry at www.ywamriga.org.

New University of the Nations Catalogue

I am pleased to announce the posting of the brand-new University of the Nations Catalogue 2014-2016. This edition is the first that will not be printed, although the .pdf’s have been designed so that anyone needing a hard copy can print it themselves. The costs of shipping and customs go up regularly, and the funds we will economise will go into development of our new Records systems.

The catalogue job has gotten bigger and more complex because of the growth of our University, in all categories. Whereas before we counted 300 schools and seminars, now we have double that, about 300 each of schools and seminars for a total of 600. UofN courses are now in 160 countries, up from 120 which is a 33% increase; we are now in 550 locations, up from 369 in 2008, which is a 49% increase; and we had approximately 16,500 students in 2010, which is a 12% increase from 2008. Of these students, 11,300 were DTS students and approximately 5200 were post-DTS students, that’s just under a third of the total. In our schools we used 97 different languages daily.

We count it a privilege to be able to serve our thousands of students as they go into the nations of the world.

YWAM Venezuela Update

I was able to get in touch with some of our staff working in Venezuela and they were able to send me this update for what is happening in their country.

The main issue here right now is a potential civil war if the current regime in power goes more radical into stop all ways for a democratic process. It’s a little weird to explain but we have two presidents right now. One is Nicolas Maduro in power by controlling all ways to force his presidency and the other is Juan Guaido who is the National Assembly Speaker and in our constitution he is the Intern president but with none military support.

The economy is crashing down every day with a inflation of 1.000.000 %. Lack of food and medicines for more than 60% of the population. All this makes more complicated the daily basis of life. YWAM is working among the poor and needy. Our base in Caracas has a feeding program that every week serves around 300 meals. We have also a base in Puerto La Cruz who is helping with kids ministry also on a feeding program. This Spring a new YWAM base will be born in the South Eastern side in Ciudad Bolivar.

All YWAM locations are now providing Biblical training to end Bible poverty and there are DTS programs to start running this March, BBC and BSN as well. (the person I contacted is) part of a coaching circle for YWAM here, also in Dominican Republic at YWAM Villa Mella base. (That person) will be traveling to Dominican Republic next week to make connections for raising support for our feeding programs in Venezuela.

Since I was in touch with them we have seen on the news increased conflict between the different factions in Venezuela, including government forces driving over and open firing on protesters. Let’s please pray for that country and the people there …

They offer services like homework help, sports coaching, and English club to kids and adults around them and to try to meet the needs of the local community. Faith and Conflict – Bosnia and Herzegovina

YWAM Bosnia and Herzegovina, in partnership with YWAM Ireland, will be running the third Faith and Conflict experience starting on Thursday May,23 in Mostar.

Starting in the beautiful, but divided city of Mostar, we will spend two days finding out what it is like to live in a city where, as they locals describe it, “the war has never ended”, 25 years after peace was signed. We also plan to take part in the GLOBAL OUTREACH DAY with an event with the local churches.

We then move on to Sarajevo, a city rebuilt, but which still has the scars of the siege which took place here in the 1990s. We will experience some of what it was like to live here during that time, but also explore more of how “faith” caused the conflict and what we can learn from their experience in our own journeys of faith and forgiveness.

Besides listening to “local voices”, we will also hear from Jonny Clark and others from YWAM Ireland who have worked for many years in the area of reconciliation in that country.

You can have a look at their Facebook Page (linked in the shownotes) to find out more about the event.

Relational Fundraising Course

Everyone in Youth With A Mission is a volunteer, and our financial support comes from people, organisations, and churches who partner with us in ministry through financial sponsorships and fundraising. To be released into missions every YWAMer needs a financial and prayer team behind them, and there are resources made available to assist in that.

Terry Sherman has developed a free, on-line Relational Fundraising course that has been made available to YWAM staff and students on the YWAM eLearning platform. The course is designed to equip YWAMers to build a team of ministry partners who will financially support them in ministry.

The Online course is designed around 4-modules

  1. Introduction – Talking about the vital need for this sort of training, share some of Terry’s own experiences from her early years, explain why fundraising is done in a relational way in YWAM, and set the stage for changing people’s mindset about raising support.
  2. The Biblical View of Fundraising – Money is a controversial topic. How we were raising in our families and cultures mostly determines how we think about money. The Bible talks more about money than almost any other subject, but most of us haven’t learned God’s perspective on it. It’s essential that we learn His ways regarding money, and to understand the spiritual dynamics that come into play when we step out to invite partnership for Kingdom purposes.
  3. Essential Tools to Communicate Vision – Vision leads the way in fundraising! Communicating vision well is essential to inviting people to partner with us. Students will explore different tools to help them better communicate their vision for mission.
  4. Create your Personal Fundraising Plan – This final module shows students how they can create their own plan and strategy for raising their FULL amount of support that they need to do ministry.

You can sign up for free to this do-it-yourself, at your own pace course, at the YWAM eLearning web-site at ywamelearning.com.

Lynn Green – Finances and Faith

We start today’s podcast with a message from Lynn Green about Finances and Faith …

Watch this video on YouTube.

You can see and read more of Lynn Green’s messages on his web-site, lynngreen.blog.

YWAM Amacet – Soroti, Uganda

YWAM Amacet have been working in Soroti, Uganda for almost 20-years. Their ministry is focused on serving three specific groups of children:

  • HIV infected and affected children.
  • New born babies, who lost their mother after the delivery.
  • Children who need a safe place, they mostly come via the police.

Their web-site if full of inspiring and heart breaking stories. I’ll share a few of them with you now, but I would also recommend that you check out their new web-site.

In April Amecet purchased a block of land that they will be raising cattle on and growing maize and sweet potatoes. They plan to grow the crops for Amecet, and also to sell. Two of their cows are already pregnant and there is also the possibility to keep chickens for their eggs, or even to keep pigs.

They have already built the fence and gate around the property and one of their neighbours cleared and ploughed the land for them. The Amecet staff went on a study tour to a local Cowfarm so as to learn more about raising and milking of the cattle.

Some of the most heart breaking stories from their ministry are the deaths of children in their care, or who they have cared for. Many of these children are orphans, in very rough shape when brought to Amacet, or are infected with the HIV virus.

Recently a lovely 13-year old girl named Betty, who was HIV+, passed away. This is a bit of how they wrote it on their web-site.

In 2016 Betty was with us and left to go back home, very happy and very healthy. Betty was HIV+ and her father and stepmother would care for her at home. But this year she came back, brought by another organisation, which works in the village with HIV+ children. We tried, but I think that Betty was already too sick. And when she became more sick, Betty gave up, I think.

When we came in Amecet today, the staff had already prayed with her (Betty). Betty was restless, a bit scared as well. Mary and I were just sitting with her, holding her hand, touching her, and telling her that it was okay, that we loved her, she became more peaceful. There was a moment that her room mate Harriet came in the room. At first a bit scared, but then she also stroked her head. It was so special, Harriet told her that God knows it all … We had both tears in our eyes.

The moment of her last breath came fast, she was very peaceful and just stopped breathing… It was sad and also special moment, to be there together with Mary, with this precious girl, who had gone to her Father!

You can read more stories like these and find out more about Amecet on their web-site at amecet-childrenshome.com.

Bible’s for Costa Rica Update

Last episode I shared with you about the Bible’s for Costa Rica ministry, including playing you some audio from their web-site. After recording and listening through the episode I realised that the data I had was from 2014, so I reached out to YWAM in Costa Rica for an update and I heard back from them with some really encouraging news …

Right now YWAM Costa Rica have distributed over 210,000 Bibles in the whole country!

They are diligently working at distributing more so that the goal of every home in the nation can have a Bible, but they have told me that they need help …

Currently they are out of Bibles. It takes about 2-months for them to receive new Bibles, but have asked for your prayers for more finances so they can purchase more Bibles, that the Bibles would come as soon as possible. They have teams lined up, wanting to distribute Bibles, but they need the Bibles to distribute, as well as more teams to help with the distribution as the Bibles become available.

I want to encourage you to pray for YWAM Costa Rica and their desire to distribute God’s Word to every home in the nation. You should also check out their web-site, ywampuertoviejo.org, and see how you might be able to help with the distribution or the purchase of the Bibles.

YWAM Ships in Papua New Guinea  has achieved many of their goals. 25 per cent of the outreach program participants and volunteers are now Papua New Guineans, and YWAM is continuing to work closely with the PNG Health Department and provincial governments.

In addition to the tens of thousands of patients each year, the PNG and YWAM Partnership includes:

  • Improving immunisation coverage
  • Providing sight-restoration surgery, enabling thousands of people to have vision for the first time
  • Installing solar lights at health facilities
  • Ensuring that there are available medical supplies
  • Offering family planning options in remote areas, saving the lives of women and children
  • Eradicating thousands of excruciating toothaches and equipping rural health workers to take on emergency tooth extractions
  • Providing training to improve access to clean water for the PNG people
  • Partnerships with PNG communities to deliver short land based training courses to thousands of people in remote areas keen to play a role in improving the livelihoods of PNG communities

The YWAM Ships Australia ministry to PNG is very exciting, and you can read more about it on the YWAM Ships Australia web-site, ywamships.org.au.

This is really cool. YWAM’s latest ship, the YWAM Liberty, is capable of transporting and delivering shipping containers. The ship itself is being fitted out for medical relief work, and already YWAM locations around the world are working at building out containers to meet various needs in Papua New Guinea.

Upcoming Podcast Course

A few years ago the idea of a course teaching people in YWAM how to Podcast was discussed.  A podcast is a fantastic way to both promote your ministry, and to be a ministry in itself. A podcast can benefit your location by:

  • Connecting with people in your local community
  • Communicating to your supporters and past staff and students

You can do many things with a podcast, including:

  • Reach a global audience
  • Make the teaching from your location available
  • Tell the stories of your ministry, staff, and students
  • Raise support and prayer for your location
  • more …

For the last eight months I have been looking at the idea of running a podcast course for YWAM and am planning to run our first online training group in September of this year.

I have been in discussions with Dave Jackson, who runs the School of Podcasting, about how we can work together to train people in YWAM to podcast. Dave Jackson has been podcasting since April 2005, and has a wealth of information that he has built up into a fantastic training program that there is no way I could match in quality or in expertise…

The School of Podcasting is a paid membership site, and Dave has agreed to give us a special discount just for YWAM.

The idea is that we will all register as a group and work through the different courses / topics together to produce and launch a podcast. The Podcast can be for your personal ministry, for your location’s ministry, or for any of the seven sphere’s of society that God calls us into.

In addition to The School of Podcasting content, we will also meet online as a group to encourage one another, discuss our progress, work through our challenges, and help each other out. I’m also working to get other input from some of our YWAM elders and leaders about communication and missions.

If participating in this is something that interests you then please let me know by visiting the web-site, ywampodcast.com/course and filling out the contact form on the bottom of the page.

YWAM Responds to the Camp Fire

With the destructive wildfires that tore through parts of California YWAM bases came together to help the people who were affected by the fires. Here is a statement from YWAM Redding, which was one of the locations that was involved in the relief work …

As you may have heard, California’s deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history, called the “Camp Fire” recently swept through Paradise, CA, just an hour and a half south of Redding. Sadly, it has taken over 70 lives, left over 1,000 still missing, and destroyed over 10,000 homes. Over the last week, YWAM Redding staff and students have spent hours manning a distribution center for the victims of the Fire with the collaboration of our YWAM Family. About a week ago, some leaders in our YWAM community had a deep desire to help the hurting community, and as they went around the city God gave them a practical solution: collect donations and give to those who have lost everything. The collecting and giving process that started out with 3 bags of clothes, turned very quickly into a whole parking lot full of organized items ready for Paradise residents to collect as needed, as well as multiple free of charge food vendors, portable bathrooms and full generator-run showers. We are now moved into an old Toys ‘R’ Us building and have plans to continue the center for another 6 months!

We still need your help! As of now, we have plenty of donations, what we need is for volunteers to give their time to sort, organize and be a part of the amazing donation process! We could use about 20 volunteers around the clock for the next couple of weeks. If you, or your church, or a group of friends are able/willing to give your time, we would love to have you! You can message YWAM Redding for more info, or feel free to just show up!

The best place to find out how you can get involved is to check out the YWAM Redding Facebook Page and the YWAM Chico Facebook page. From there you can see a few different ways that you can get involved …

Fountain of Life

The Fountain of Life ministry works to help solve the problems of a lack of access to safe water, poor basic sanitation, and improper personal hygiene. It does this through a novel approach with a focus on three different areas:

  1. Education
  2. Appropriate Technology
  3. Multiplication

One of the characteristics that really stands out to me with this ministry is their commitment to making the use of appropriate technology to be be central to what they do. Their solutions are effective, accessible, low-cost, and easy to implement. They drill wells using locally sourced materials, local craftsmen, with simple to understand and inexpensive to repair pumps.

Check out the Fountain of Life web-site at fountainoflife.org.uk to find out more about about their ministry into Africa, and different ways that you can get involved.

YWAM Family Ministry International

YWAM Foundational Value # 15 states:

YWAM affirms the importance of families serving God together in missions, not just the father and/or mother. We encourage the development of strong and healthy family units, with each member sharing the call to missions and contributing their gifts in unique and complementary ways.

With a focus on this foundational value, YWAM Family Ministries has a mission:

To disciple families with biblical principles for life and relationships that they may be transformed and become agents of transformation – expanding God’s kingdom and bringing His blessing to the nations.

I’ll let them explain it themselves …

YWAMer assists in recovery from Brazil’s Deadliest Environmental Disaster

Earlier this year Brazil experienced their deadliest environmental disaster when a dam near an iron ore mine in Brumadinho burst it’s barrier, flooding another dam below that one. Churches have been actively working in the area, comforting hundreds of families in grief, and working with public agents who are offering humanitarian relief to the people in the region.

This incident is the deadliest mining disaster in the country, with around 300 people feared dead. The dam was inactive at the time, but was being used to hold back a sludge byproduct from iron ore mining.

The sludge from the dam cut through the dam’s complex, nearby farms, and the neighbourhood where many of the workers lived. It destroyed houses and vehicles in the area.

A YWAMer, Juliana Silveira, traveled from São Paulo to Brumadinho to help with the recovery in any what that she could. Since being there she has been able to help sort and screen donations, pray and emotionally support the people in the area.

You can read the full story on the Sight Magazine at sightmagazine.com.au.

YWAM Ship Amazing Grace to set sail

The YWAM Ship “Amazing Grace” is do to set sail this month. YWAM Mobile Health and Youth Service

Youth With A Mission in Perth, Australia has been invited to provide a health and youth service truck to reach “off road” communities in “The Kimberley”. The Kimberley is a region that covers almost half a million square kilometres and has many remote and isolated communities. These communities live with very little access to health facilities and are confined by rough roads.

The YWAM Service Truck will have an important emphasis of health education and the youth. Consistency of care, which is hoped to be provided through the service, provides strength to families and encourages a healthy lifestyle.

The 4×4 truck will work towards:

  • Mobile access to rural and remote communities
  • Partnering with existing health services
  • Provide health education
  • Coming alongside the youth with sports and celebration
  • Mobilizing professionals to help in these communities

Aboriginal health in Australia has not improved over the last 20-years and North West Australia has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world. We believe that it is God’s desire to bring change and hope in these communities. You can find out more, including how you could involved. at the YWAM Perth web-site, ywamperth.org.au.

Bevin Grinder on the Engaging Missions Podcast

On the last YWAM News Show Podcast Bevin Ginder shared with us about the top 5 missions topics that we should be prioritizing. Bevin was recently interviewed on the Engaging Missions Podcast, episode 256, where he shares about how to be a mobilizer in the World of Missions.

I’ve been listening to the Engaging Missions podcast for quite a few years, and really enjoy their content. They have some in depth interviews with many people involved in missions, and if you are interested in hearing another podcast about missions I would highly recommend that you check it out at engagingmissions.com.

Bless Mongolia Missions Trip

On the Engaging Missions interview with Bevin Ginder he talks a bit about Mongolia and how it’s become one of the highest per capita missions sending nations in the world, with it only needing about 10% of the number of Christians per missionary sent as America. There was something in the founding of the Christian Church in Mongolia that highlighted the importance of bringing the Gospel to the nations …

If you have ever wanted to visit Mongolia, and serve God their, YWAM North Cascades is sending a missions trip to the capital city of Mongolia (Ulaanbaantar) in August of this year. “Bless Mongolia” is a 2-week program focused on Bible distribution and outreach in the capital city. It’s a part of a global Christian effort to distribute Bibles to every home in Mongolia.

Stories:

YWAM Task Force for Kerala Flood Victims

Floods in the southern Indian state of Kerala have killed over 350 people since June. According to YWAM Kochi, which is in the state of Kerala, it is the worst natural disaster that they have seen. The rains have forced authorities to open 33 dams in the state and the majority of the state is flooded. Roads are washed away and places have been completely isolated.

YWAM Kochi is responding to the needs in their state in a few different ways…

Already hundreds of people are staying at their location, and there are government doctors visiting and helping the people staying there. They have an urgent need of:

  • Blankets
  • Bed sheets
  • Mats
  • Food

YWAM Kochi is also putting together a task force of skilled and able people to assist with the rehabilitation of the Flood Victims.

If you are able to help with either of these needs visit their web-site, ywamkochi.org, to get in touch with them, or contact then through their Facebook page.

The Global Fight Against Human Trafficking and Slavery

Are we doing enough in the global fight against modern slavery and human trafficking?

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), an agency of the United Nations, UN, there are currently an estimated 40.3-million people in modern slavery and 152 million in child labour around the world.

Of the victims of modern slavery 1 in 4, or over 10-million, are children.

Many of these victims are exploited in the private sector, such as domestic work, construction, or agriculture. Almost 5-million are victims in the commercial sex industry, of which 99% are women.

Often overlooked in the modern slavery numbers is also the over 15-million people, of whom almost 85% are women, who are in forced marriages. Over a third of all victims of forced marriage were children at the time of the marriage.

Of those people who are trafficked, 99% are never rescued!

There are many examples of modern day slavery happening around the world …

Human Trafficking in Nepal and India

Slave Labour in the Middle East Gulf States like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait

Recent furore over an Intragram post by a Kuwaiti blogger helped to highlight the plight of many so called “domestic servants” in the Middle East, who are treated no better than slaves. This blogger said:

“How can you have a servant at home who keeps their own passport with them?” asked Alqattan in a video that has since been removed. “What’s worse is they have one day off every week, To take a day off every week, that’s four days a month,” she said.

“Those are the days that she’ll be out. And we don’t know what she’ll be doing on those days, with her passport on her.

“How can you have a servant at home who gets to keep their passport with them? If they ran away and went back to their country, who’ll refund me?

Unfortunately those conditions are not uncommon in the Middle East, with migrant workers typically having their freedoms severely limited by their “employers”. This includes:

  • Being locked in the house with no way to get out
  • Having their passports taken from them
  • Wages being withheld
  • Not having access to any form of communication
  • Only being allowed to go out of the house while being escorted by a member of their “employers” family
  • Being subject to sexual and physical assault, without protection from local law enforcement
  • Being forced to work 21-hour days
  • Not being allowed to chose their own employer and being sold and passed around like slaves
  • Not being allowed to leave the country with their “employers” permission

Many of these abuses are made possible because of the Kafala System, which affects over 23 million workers, that is present in many rich Arab Gulf States in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. It is estimated that in Saudi Arabia, and other Gulf States, there are over a million slaves.

Slave Labour Building the World Cup 2022 Facilities

Qatar is due to host the upcoming 2022 Football / Soccer Fifa World Cup. There has been intense scruteny over the use of foreign and migrant workers in the building of these facilities, with many claiming that the industrial and construction workers are being housed in inhumane conditions, and that basic safety measure for the workers is being ignored.

Even last month as France celebrated their win in the 2018 World Cup there are fresh reports coming out of Qatar of the horrific conditions that the migrant workers are subject to.

Sharan Burrow is an advocate for workers rights in Qatar and recently gave an interview about the migrant worker situation in Qatar …

Watch this video on YouTube.

Despite pledging to make reforms to their migrant worker system in Qatar reports continue to come out about their failure to follow through.

Slavery at Sea – South East Asia Slavery and Human Trafficking

Just North of where I am here in Australia there is more accounts of slave labour in the fishing fleets of South East Asia.

A few years ago Australia banned the import of seafood from that part of the world, and I, like many, complained about it because of the huge increases in the cost of the seafood. The reason for the ban was because of the reports of rampant slave labour in the crews of many of the fishing vessels in the area. If I had actually know then what I know now, I would have been all for the ban …

Watch this video on YouTube.

That audio was pulled from a larger report and story from the Guardian. I would highly recommend that you have a look at the link in the show notes at ywampodcast.com/108 where you can watch the full 15-minute mini-documentary, and read their full report.

While that original story is from 2014, reports from even last year indicate that the practice of murder, slavery, and forced labour in the fishing industry is still prevalent…

Child Soldiers

Unfortunately child soldiers are still commonly used around the world in some state armies and many non-state militias.

Most of these children were kidnapped from their homes, and their families were killed or enslaved. They are forced to be fighters, cooks, suicide bombers, human shields, messengers, spies, or for sexual purposes. There are estimated to be over 300,000 child soldiers in the world today.

These children live in a state of shock and in desperate need of medical and psychological attention. As soldiers they suffer in many overwhelming ways:

  • 90% of them would have been beaten
  • 88% witness murder
  • 86% are threatened with death
  • 59% have been commanded to abduct other children
  • 53% are commanded to commit murder
  • 26% have been raped

(source: here)

Slave and Child Labour in Mining, Agriculture, and Industry

Around the world many people, including children, are used for industrial, agriculture, and mining. Many of these people live in slave like conditions …

Where is there child and slave labour:

  • Garment industry
  • Mining – Gold, Diamonds, Rare Minerals
  • Fruit, Tobacco, Coffee, and Coco Picking
  • Household workers / servants

What is YWAM Doing?

We are as Christians called to bring justice to these people…

… Learn to do good;
seek justice,
rescue the oppressed,
defend the orphan, plead for the widow.
Isaiah 1:17

and …

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
James 2:14-17

and …

He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.
Deut. 10:18

YWAM India Street Children Ministry

  • Reunite children with their families
  • Get the children permanently off the streets
  • Prepare the children to live in society
  • Provide homes for the children that are truly destitute
  • Offer counselling for disturbed children

YWAM India has ministered to over 7000 children through their shelters in Chennai, Hyderbad, Kolkata, and Delhi. Some of these children stay at the shelters and some drop in for a daily bath and meal. To date the shelters have reunited over 60 children with their families, enrolled others in school, and provided vocational training to other boys who now hold well paying jobs.

YWAM Response to Lombok Earthquake

In early August the Indonesian island of Lombok was devastated by an earthquake that left over 300-dead. Since the initial earthquake the island has been hit by over 450 aftershocks, that have continued to deliver damage to the communities.

The magnitude 7.0 earthquake damaged or destroyed nearly 68,000 homes and has left over 270,000 people homeless or displaced.

A team from UofN Bali is planning to go to one of the remote villages in Lombok with relief supplies. Some of the YWAM staff members know the people and the area around the village. Most of the homes have been destroyed and the people are sleeping in the rice fields. Their needs are for tarps, tents, blankets, rice, water, and other food items.

UofN Bali is currently raising the money for the relief items to bring with the team, and you can find out more on their web-site, uofnbali.org.

Stories:

Cyclone Idai in Mozambique

Cyclone Idai crossed the coast in central Mozambique on the night of March 14, 2019. The cyclone had sustained winds of 195 km/h (120 mph) and damaged or destroyed thousands of structures. The strong winds were accompanied by heavy rain and flooding throughout Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

It has been estimated that there are over 1000 deaths attributed to the cyclone so far, with some estimating that it could reach into the tens of thousands dead. Around 1.7 million people are affected across South East Africa, with 100,000 people needing urgent rescue near the city of Beira. There is no running water or electricity in much of the area, and many homes have been swept away and roads destroyed by floods. Over 400,000 Mozambicans are estimated to now be homeless.

There are reports of cholera in the area, and there is risk of other outbreaks, including malaria, which is already increasing.

Two Youth With A Mission centres have been affected by this natural disaster. Thankfully no YWAM staff or students have reportedly lost their lives, but they are trying to recover from the shock of the disaster. Both locations have had the majority of their buildings severely damaged.

YWAM Beira runs a home for 29 boys and young men and a community school for over 600 students. Classrooms, dorms and other facilities have all been damaged.

YWAM Dondo runs a preschool for 68 children, a laboratory to diagnose malaria and a HIV patient care program and pastors seminars and much more. The classrooms, accommodation, laboratory, and clinic have all been damaged.

There are also many people in the communities around the Youth With a Mission locations that are in desperate need of help.

Youth With A Mission is engaging in a unified response to this crisis. YWAM has linked up with RescueNet and Mercy Air to ensure that they are giving the best response possible. Mercy Air has already done a flyover assessment and RescueNet Europe is on their way to provide some of the necessary assistance.

To allow for a swift and coordinated flow of resources YWAM Southern Africa has set-up a dedicated office managed by John Sulter and Dave Peter at YWAM Muizenberg, South Africa. You can contact the office directly to find out how to donate and help at mzidai@ywammuizenberg.org.

The situation in Mozambique is very serious. We ask that you would please be generous towards our brothers and sisters in Christ in Mozambique. They are in desperate need of food, water, shelter, and medical supplies. (source)

There are regular updates coming to us from the teams in South East Africa, and we will be updating you in the upcoming shows so that you can know what’s going on and how you can help.

YWAM Lebanon USA Fire

The YWAM Lebanon, Pennsylvania base had an accidental fire on the morning of March 27. At the time there were 17 people in the building. All 17 people evacuated the building without any injuries, but the entire building is destroyed.

In addition to the building being destroyed, so was all of their furniture, office equipment and supplies, computers, phones, cameras, personal items and clothing, and more …

They have started up a GoFundMe page to raise money to replace all of the lost items and are also looking for a temporary office space in the downtown area of Lebanon.

YWAM Ships Norway

The first “Think Inside the Box” containers from YWAM Norway arrived recently on-board the m/v YWAM Liberty. The three containers includes

  • 2 x Dental Clinics
  • Mobile Wood Workshop

The Mobile Wood Workshop will be used to help with the remodeling of the YWAM Liberty and the two clinics will be brought to Papua New Guinea to provide dental services to the people of PNG.

YWAM Urban Keys Stop Traffic for the Unborn

On March 26 YWAM Urban Key in London, England YWAM Staff and Students took a stand for the unborn on International Day of the Unborn Child. They did this by stopping traffic on the Westminster Bridge for 9-minutes to stand for the 9-million lives lost since the abortion law pass in the UK in 1967.

In addition to paying tribute to all those babies that lost their lives, they also brought awareness in hope that society would stand up and make a difference for the lives fighting for their right to be born. An unborn baby is a human life, just like another other, and it has a right to live.

You can find out more about the protest on the YWAM London Urban Keys Facebook page.

“University in a Box” Mobile Classroom

YWAM San José, Costa Rica recently completed their first mobile classroom, or “University in a Box”. A team took a shipping container and put it through an adaptation process to transform it into a mobile classroom. Their desire is to take education to remote areas in their nation.

Based on the photos on YWAM San Jose’s Facebook Page it looks to be a very modern set-up, offering many options for training including STEM subjects.

Joshua Project App

YWAM Frontier Missions recently recommended an app for Unreached People Groups by the Joshua Project called “Unreached of the day”.

The app has information on over 7,000 UPGs. It features a different people group to learn about and pray for each day. For each group the app provides:

  • a brief description of the people
  • ministry obstacles
  • outreach ideas
  • prayer points for any existing followers of Jesus among them
  • prayer points for the entire people group
  • a map
  • resources in their language: Bibles; online audio New Testaments; Jesus Film; audio Gospel recordings; etc.
  • how to get involved: support a national missionary; help fund Bible translation; help fund Jesus Film in their language; use Facebook to share the gospel with people in a UPT; network with others interested in this people group

You can read about YWAM Frontier Missions recommendation on their web-site ywamfm.org, and you can download the app for Android or Apples devices at joshuaproject.net.

The Send Report

In the last news show we shared with you about the Send. Reports from The Send were extremely positive with:

  • Over 70,000 Christians gathered in Orlando for the Send, including many from Youth With A Mission, including our founder Loren Cunningham.
  • A report from The Send said that, “At The Send, we are calling every believer to take action. So far 16,656 have committed to fasting, 2,145 commitments to reaching High Schools, 1,878 committed to Universities, 4,134 committed to reaching their neighborhood. 482 have responded to the gospel.”

Schools:

Jesus’ last commandment to us was to:

… go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Mat. 28: 19-20)

Anyone that tell you not to go out and tell people about Jesus is telling you to disobey what Jesus actually told us to do. Youth With A Mission is all about “Knowing God and Making Him Known”, as such much of our training and ministries are built around that …

Muslim World School of Frontier Missions (SOFM)

The Muslim World School of Frontier Missions (SOFM) is for people who have a passion to share Jesus with Muslims. It’s for people who want to share Jesus in places where there are few known believers.

In Chaing Mai Youth With A Mission will be running a dual track School of Frontier Missions, preparing students to share the Good News with Muslims and Buddhists of Southeast and Central Asia. The training helps students to understand the worldview and belief systems of unreached people groups, plant growing churches, and get placed on a team that will help guide students as they learn the language and begin to bear fruit.

The school involves a lot of hands-on training. Staff and students will be experiencing different cultures, worship styles, and local-style evangelism throughout the school. They will visit local mosques and temples, spend time in local communities, and learn from the people around them. Students get to hear from experienced field workers, staff and church planters, who have had years of ministry experience, countless stories, and eye-opening case studies that the students can learn from

Head over to ywamchiangmai.org to find out more about this school and their outreach to the Muslim world.

School of Missional Justice (SMJ)

YWAM Wiler will be running the School of Missional Justice (SMJ) starting in June. During the course they will be looking at:

  • Why do the innocent suffer?
  • Why do the rich get richer and the poor get poorer?
  • Why are women and children victimized and exploited?
  • Why do I exist?
  • and more …

Some of the elements they will cover are:

  • A Biblical Christian Worldview
  • Creation and the Biblical View of Man
  • The Image of God and Ethics
  • The Fall (All Relationships are broken – to God, Self, Others, Creation…)
  • God’s plan of Redemption – fixing what is broken
  • The Kingdom of God
  • God’s plan for Restoration

Missionary Care Foundations Course, Sweden

  1. Carpet time (time with God)
The fruit of our ministry needs to come out of our intimacy with Him.
  2. Put yourself first
Do not make ministry to others all that you do, find something that you like to do and schedule it in to your week. You will find it to be refreshing and a recharge to your energy levels.
  3. Say No!
Know your own personal capabilities and set healthy boundaries around those capabilities. You will need to say no to some good things so that you are able to do the things that God has for you.

Pray for God to bring peace to South Sudan. Pray for the plans of the enemy to steal, kill and destroy to be frustrated. Pray that God would bring life and comfort to the millions who have been impacted by this war.

Stories:

YWAM Love Feasts

This month Tom Bloomer, who has been with Youth With a Mission since 1974 and is currently the International Provost of the University of the Nations, wrote a letter for the YWAM Voices online publication about YWAM Love Feasts. The article starts …

In 1971 at YWAM Lausanne, there were a couple of serious accidents on Sunday afternoons. When Loren and Darlene Cunningham sought the Lord as to the reason, they understood Him to be saying He would restore His protection when there was a new commitment to His holiness, especially concerning Sabbath observance.

Love Feasts were part of God’s plan for YWAM to restore the Sabbath, which included:

  • No work on Sunday
  • No sports of hard play
  • The Sabbath was to be a day of quiet, rest, walks in the forest, and concentration on the Lord
  • To prepare for the Sabbath, YWAM had a love feast on Saturday evenings.

Tom goes on to explore how the love feasts worked and what influences led to them being adopted in Youth With A Mission. He also explains how the love feasts also led to YWAM Lausanne learning to better worship God.

Tome has some challenging input for Youth With A Mission and the need for a return to these traditions, and a re-embracing of the love feast and the Sabbath.

You can read Tom’s full letter on the ywam.org web-site.

Live Streaming Session with Tom Bloomer

YWAM South Sudan is also in middle of renovating some of their huts as the rains start this month. They are still needing finances to come through to cover the completion of the renovation and to make the hut liveable. Again you can find out more on their Facebook page.
