TPPP Episode 141 : Intellectual Dark Wave

Once again it takes me a month go put a podcast version of the YouTube live show out, but I did it! I have on Nico from Hawaii, who occasionally works with Tony from God Chat With God and Tony. He says he heard of me through there and sent me an email (a rare occurrence at any time) and asked to come on and talk about his experience as a Jehovah's Witness. We also talked about his work at a labor union. Other subjects, such as why people seem to hate him so much on Twitter and the California recall were discussed, as well as why we got the mads at each other like four years ago, or maybe three. Anyway, it was great to have him on again, even if he is an extremist.

We also talk about her journey to atheism, her work as a licensed mental health professional, her other book, and her love of hiking!  Candace is a licensed professional mental health counselor. She is a former ordained minister turned atheist-humanist activist, researcher, and writer on issues related to race, religion, and mental health. She is a member of the Black Humanist Alliance advisory board, The Secular Therapist Project, and The Clergy Project. Candace is also the author of "The Ebony Exodus Project: Why Some Black Women Are Walking Out on Religion—and Others Should Too."

This week I have on my friend Rie to talk about her experience in an extremist Evangelical church with all the characteristics of a cult. She talks about her rape as a child, as well as ongoing abuse by her family and church members. She was only able to escape when she was married, but even to this day she deals with PTSD. Her family for the most part has shunned her because she chose to separate herself from the teachings of their particular sect. I had the opportunity to go to the abode of Cass Midgley, co-host of Everyone's Agnostic podcast, to interview Dave Warnock. Dave is an ex-pastor who deconverted to atheism. He was diagnosed with ALS fairly recently, and he made the decision not to just sit around and wait for death, but instead he is, what he calls 'dying out loud'. We talked about his past life as a pastor; his deconversion and the ensuing consequences; and his diagnosis. He has been traveling the country talking about his experience, and he is inspiring people on the way. I was really honored to speak with Dave. TPPP Episode 92 : Escape from Extremism

I am going to issue a content warning for this episode for talking about PTSD, suicide, and some combat violence.  This week I speak to Hyrum and Nate about some of their experiences with combat as well as PTSD, both combat and non-combat related, as well as other conditions that arose from traumatic brain injury. They also talk about the difficulty of re-adjusting to civilian life after combat, as well as the need to find purpose in order to stave off depression, even up to suicidal ideation. They also talk about ways to cope with these issues, though, and how anyone can learn to adjust with therapy, purpose, and a good support system. Finally, they emphasize that PTSD is a condition that can occur from any traumatic situation, not just combat. Thus the argument that somehow people who were never in combat can't experience PTSD is absolutely false, and it is harmful to those who suffer from this condition. Everyone's experiences and illnesses are valid, regardless of the circumstances. I really want to thank Hyrum and Nate for coming on, as I know it wasn't easy to recall these painful experiences. NaNoCon is March 17th in Nashville at Glencliff High School. Tickets are $15 until March 1st and $20 thereafter. I will be on the podcasters panel again this year, so that's even more of an incentive to attend. Secular Social Justice is in Washington, DC at the All Souls Unitarian Church. The cost of that one is $25. I hope to see y'all at one or both conferences! On the palaver I speak with Ingrid from Chicago, a trans woman who has been unhoused in the past and may soon be again. We talk about how she became unhoused, her experiences, her struggles, and her hopes. She is looking at the possibility of being unhoused again in the near future, but I hope things will change and that this will not happen. It is a difficult but important discussion, mostly because it seems that being unhoused is an issue that too many people try ignore, I think mainly because we are told that being unhoused is shameful but also people are afraid that they may be in that situation one day. TPPP Episode 70 : Unhoused

After a three-month hiatus, The Triple Po had returned! I had to take a step back and take care of my mental health, but I'm raring to go again! The format of the show is different now as well. I am going to be doing the show live from the YouTube channel and then releasing the audio as the regular podcast. The schedule is also changing to twice a month. The show will be live on Saturdays at 7 PM Central, unless it conflicts with Atheists at the Pub in which case it will be Friday at 7 PM Central. The podcast will be released by Monday morning after the live show. I talked a bit about the hiatus as well as a friend's experience with sexual assault as well as Pride Month. After some technical difficulties (which is par for the course with these two!), I talked to Amy and Nadya from the Ginger Snaps. We talk about those same issues, but also there's also a lot of great conversation with friends. I want to thank y'all who have stuck around with me through the hiatus as well as the 4 patrons that stayed on. That means a lot, and I appreciate the support. I hope y'all will like the new format. TPPP Episode 111 : Foundation Beyond Belief 

It's episode 100 of The Triple Po! I first wanted to thank my patrons for giving their hard earned money to a show of questionable value. Y'all are truly awesome. And of course I want to thank everyone who has listened to the show, given me feedback, and been supportive overall. It really means a lot, and I really do appreciate it.  Of course, the new episode name and logo was unveiled this episode. The name is The Postmodern Polymaths, which is a bit of a poke at those pretentious fucks such as Jordan Peterson who ramble on incessantly about 'postmodernism' and 'cultural Marxism' ruining our world and making everyone into snowflakes. Of course, we all know what an incoherent and pseudo-intellectual douchecanoe Peterson and his ilk are. Unfortunately, there are a lot Angry White Dudes who listen to him, and they have been know to do some crazy shit. After the unveiling, Lyman and myself talked about the shooting in Santa Clarita, where three kids died in a high school shooting, including the shooter. Of course we talk about the prevalence of these sort of events, and the lack of political will to do anything about it thanks to the fact that so many politicians are in the pockets of the NRA. We talked about the necessity of background checks and the fetishizing of guns in general. On a cautiously optimistic note, we spoke about how a judge has allowed a law suit against Remington to go forward. I am pessimistic that anything will come of it, but maybe this will open the floodgates to more of these kind of suits being filed. We talked about an excellent article written by Krista Cox about her disenfranchisement from the atheist community, mainly due to men behaving badly, and the lack of accountability they face. She of course also talks about how David Silverman was able to ride the road to redemption to become general director of Atheist Alliance International, despite his demonstrable record of bad choices and shitty behavior. It's infuriating, but unfortunately not surprising. Thanks again to everyone who has listened to and supported the show. But then the main topic of philosophy was discussed. We discussed what philosophy is; a brief of history of how it evolved in its current understanding; how there are any good philosophy 'communicators' out there of any great stature to explain things to the layman; and some sources that are trying to do just that, via podcasts and YouTube. It's a fascinating discussion. I don't if he know convinced me or not, but he has definitely given me some things to think about. Perhaps, just perhaps, I will one day give a fuck about philosophy!
