I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 33: Shalane Flanagan & Elyse Kopecky

Shalane Flanagan is an Olympic medalist, four-time Olympian, American record holder, and world-class marathoner. She finished second at the 2010 NYC marathon and ran the fastest time ever by an American woman at the 2014 Boston Marathon, completing the race in 2:22.02. At the 2014 Berlin Marathon, Shalane ran a personal best of 2:21.14, the second-fastest time ever by an American woman.

Nike has sponsored Shalane since she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004. She has been running at an elite level for 16 years and typically runs 100-plus miles a week. She attributes her ability to sustain this level of training to her nutrient-dense diet. Focusing on fueling for health and performance is an integral part of her training regimen.

Shalane has been featured on the cover of Runner’s World, Womens Running, Running Times, Competitor Magazine, and Track and Field News. She has appeared on 60 Minutes, ESPN Outside the Lines, and Oprah. Her inspiring story has also been heralded in Womens Health, Shape, USA Today, the Boston Globe, and the New York Times. Shalane speaks passionately about the importance of healthy eating at running events across the country. Shalane lives and trains in Portland, Oregon.

Elyse Kopecky is a chef, food writer, nutrition educator, runner, and proud mother. Her friendship with Shalane began 16 years ago on the cross-country team at the University of North Carolina. After graduation, both moved to Portland, Oregon, to work for Nike—Shalane as a professional runner, and Elyse as a digital marketing producer.

Elyse’s career took her abroad, where she took cooking classes throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. Armed with amazing recipes from around the world, Elyse began cooking to fuel her athletic endeavors. She discovered that by incorporating more fats into her diet, she was stronger, healthier, and happier than ever before. She quit a successful marketing career of 10 years for the chance to help others eat right and moved to New York City to study at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts.

Once back in Portland, Elyse reunited with Shalane over a home-cooked meal, and their conversation quickly shifted toward the detrimental fad diets pushed on female athletes. Elyse’s infectious enthusiasm for teaching other women the importance of “indulgent nourishment” inspired Shalane. That night, the idea for Run Fast Eat Slow was born between two friends with a shared passion to educate and coach athletes to nourish themselves for the long run. Elyse can be found at IndulgentNourishment.com and on the trails in Bend, Oregon.

(Cited from Run Fast Eat Slow Website)

In this episode, we talk about Elyse and Shalane’s new cook book Run Fast, Eat Slow. We also talk about some important, fun moments in Shalane’s professional career such as the Olympic Trials, Rio and Boston 2014.

Rank #2: Episode 185: Katie Arnold

Katie Arnold is the 2018 Leadville Trail 100 Champion and the Author of the new book “Running Home”. She is the mother of two and is a contributing editor and former managing editor at Outside Magazine. She is the creator of an amazing column for Outside called “Raising Rippers” which talks about raising adventurous kids.

Katie, who is an elite ultra runner talks about becoming a runner by accident – she never competed as a kid or a young adult- aside from the 10K she ran once a year as a kid (which also happened by accident). Once she started running trail races and winning she realized she had a real gift for running fast- she ran her first Ultra at the age of 40.

Some of Kate’s most notable accomplishments include winning the 2018 Leadville Trail 100 Run, where she finished 11th overall in field of more than 700 runners. She won the 2018 Jemez Mountains 50 Mile, 2014 TransRockies 3-Day Trail Run, Jemez Mountains 50K, the Mount Taylor 50K. She is two-time overall champion and course record holder at the  Angel Fire 100K.

Katie lives in Sante Fe, New Mexico and loves to be outdoors – she loves biking, skiing, going on river trips, hiking and of course writing. Though her first book is a memoir, she hopes to write a fiction novel one day. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Men’s JournalESPN the MagazineMarie ClaireRunner’s WorldElle, and Sunset, among others.

I felt a really strong connection with Katie in this episode and felt like we could have talked for hours. In Katie’s book, she writes about losing her Father and how she dealt with extrememly intense anxiety for an 18-month period after losing him and how running ultimately became a really great coping mechanism for that. Running didn’t cure it but it helped. Being someone who has dealt with anxiety quite a bit, I had a lot of questions. We also talk a lot about what it’s like to be a top ultra runner while also living moment to moment and not overthinking things. It’s a lot of good stuff. I can’t wait to hear what you all think.

Enjoy!

Des Linden is one of the most consistent American Marathoners of all time. She is fast, she is fiesty and she’s chasing down her big W. Des is a two-time Olympian in the marathon and has placed second at Boston, Chicago and the US Olympic Trials. She holds a marathon PR of 2:22:38. Des is toeing the line in Boston this year along with several other notable American Women and after this conversation, I’m sure you’ll be even more excited to cheer for her than you were before!

In this episode we talk about Boston 2018, her marathon progression, some fun stories about training with her husband and not balancing her training and his ironman endeavors. We talk about her breakthrough race in 2011 when she ran a 2:22, placing second in the Boston Marathon by only 2 seconds.

Des is so humble, she is a fierce, hard worker and let me just tell you she is so freaking nice. We had some audio issues (like 45 minutes worth) before the conversation actually got going and she was so chill and nice to figure things out with me. I asked for 45-60 minutes and she gave me two full hours of her time. She says patience is her sweet spot (which we see in her racing) but I also saw that in her willingness to spend time figuring out the issues in this recording as well. THANK YOU DES.

Enjoy this episode with friends!

What a fun episode with Janae Baron! Some of you might know her from her blog Hungry Runner Girl. Janae is so sweet, kind and has such a fun personality. I knew it would be so easy and fun chatting with her.

Janae is a runner and a fast one at that, with a half marathon PR of 1:21 and marathon PR of 3:04. She is the momma of an adorable little girl and step mom to an equally adorable little boy. In this episode we talk about running, walking through a divorce, post divorce dating and marriage. Janae is open and honest about the challenges of having a blended family, and she is so adorable when she talks about her husband Andrew who she is so clearly in love with. I also get a little curious asking her questions about being Mormon and then we get deep into the running talk as well.

Basically, Janae is my new best friend and I’m holding her to coming out for the Live show in September.

I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 50: Colleen Quigley, Shelby Hoolihan & Courtney Frerichs

What an exciting episode! I got to chat with three Olympians to celebrate episode 50 of the podcast. Colleen and Courtney both competed in the Steeplechase in Rio this year in the 2016 Olympics and Shelby competed in the 5K. All three girls run for the Bowerman Track Club under coach Jerry Schumacher and are sponsored by Nike.

In this episode the ladies talk about their journey to becoming professional athletes – they all had very different paths which made for interesting conversation and lot’s of inspiration for a young runner to hear. We also talk about  making the Olympic team and goals for the future. They give some great advice to young ladies who might be inspiring to be in their shoes one day.

If you know of any high school track or cross country coaches- this would be a great episode to share with them for their teams!

2017 was a BIG year for Sarah Bishop. She PR’d in nearly every distance and qualified for the Olympic Trials in the Marathon, only six weeks after winning the Marine Corps Marathon. She is the Mother of four daughters (two of whom are twins) and works full time as a construction site contractor as a business development director. She served in the Air Force for three years, where she met her husband, who is currently still serving in the Air Fore as an engineer.

Sarah ran in High School and College (D1 All American 800 meter runner) but she hung it up for quite a few years and didn’t start competitively running again until 2014 after having four kids. She found herself in a slump when her twins were 6 months old and needed to do something for herself, so she took up running again and never looked back. She is a motivated and driven person and this episode will inspire you to not set artificial limits on yourself and dream big. That’s what Sarah did when she decided to break 3 hours in the marathon, only to decide not too long after that that she could also qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials.

Ben True is joining my line up of male guests on the show and I couldn’t be happier about it. Many of you probably heard his name all around the running world when he WON the New York City Half in March running is debut half marathon in a time of 62:39. This made him the first American Male winner of this race’s thirteen year history.

Ben competed at Dartmouth as a runner and skier in college and went on to run very briefly for the Oregon Track Club post college. He now runs for Saucony and trains on his own in New Hampshire and is currently coached by Ray Treacy. He holds a 5K PR of 13:02 and is chasing down the goal to make an Olympic Team. (He was a favorite in 2016 to make the team and it unfortunately did not work out for him that year) One of the highlights of his career was the 2013 IAAF World Cross Country Championships where he finished 6th overall, leading Team USA to a second-place finish behind Ethiopia.

In this episode we talk about his career in the sport and how he got to where he is now and also the kind of mentality he brings to racing and training. Ben is married to Professional Triathlete Sarah True (who was crushing a half ironman while we conducted the conversation) and they recently started a coffee business with Des and Ryan Linden. Teal is a competitive runner who went from a 4 hour marathon to a 2:42 marathon. Her 2:42 qualified her for the Olympic Marathon Trials, which was her big goal and she ran in the trials in February 2016 on a very hot day. This did not happen over night- she worked really hard for several years an ran several marathons to achieve this goal. Not all of those marathons were PRs or amazing races, but she kept working at it and made it happen.

Teal has her Doctorate in Neuropsychology. Girlfriend completed 9 years of undergrad + grad school. Clearly we have a high achiever on our hands. She’s a freelance writer and writes both about running stuff and science stuff. She lives in Richmond VA with her husband and their brand new baby girl Maya! Teal was just a couple days away from her due date when we recorded this episode, so lot’s has changed in her world since then!

In this episode we talk all about her journey to getting to that 2:42 marathon, I had so may questions for her that just came flying out. I could have picked her brain about running stuff for hours. I have so much respect for her discipline, hard work and fearlessness of not only setting a big goal, but putting it out there for the world to see and going for it. We also talk about her career, favorite books and more. Such a fun conversation!

Congrats on the baby girl Teal!

She grew up playing basketball and found her love for long distance running during college. She is currently training for Western States 100 again that will take place in June.

While Jackie runs for Hoka One One and Lily Trotters and is one of the most competitive ultra runners in our country- she is also extremely dedicated to her career as a Physical Therapist. She holds a Doctoral Degree in Biomechanics and currently studies Neuroscience at Emory University.

Jackie is smart and has a really good mindset on how to approach training hard in a healthy way while still prioritizing other important things in her life. You might learn a little about running form and leg swing in this episode as well. She’s knows a thing or two about it.

Enjoy!

Olympic Steeple Chaser Colleen Quigley joins me on the show today! Colleen runs for Nike with the Bowerman Track Club and made her first Olympic team in 2016 and placed 8th in Rio. Her running career started in high school when she realized she had real potential and ended up winning state in the 1600 and the 3200 her senior year. She went on to run for Florida state where she won an NCAA title her senior year, heading straight into competing at Worlds in Beijing where she placed 12th.

Colleen had a successful modeling career in high school and made the decision to pursue running in college, rather than  modeling- something she doesn’t regret and is very happy about it. Over the past several years she has dealt with injury on and off and has become quite the mermaid in the pool – we talk about the seclusion of cross training through injury and how you’re never the ONLY one going through it. Colleen is quite the entrepreneur herself as she is delving into a legit granola business on the side (we are doing a giveaway on Monday on Instagram so make sure you are following both Colleen and I! Steeple_Squigs & LindseyHein626).

In this episode, she puts big goals out there, which you know I love and tells us all about her relationship with her Bowerman Track Club Babes & what it’s like to train with so many close friends. She also goes into the heartbreak of being DQ’d at Worlds in London last summer and that bittersweet moment of watching her two American teammates medal in the event- a huge milestone for the American Woman Steeplechasers! She’s got an exciting career ahead of her and just WON the Wannamaker Mile at the Milrose games last week! I can’t wait to cheer her on with the rest of you.

I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 45: Mary Johnson

Such a fun episode with Mary! Mary’s been a friend through social media for years and I had the opportunity to hang with her in Boston 2014. I’ve always admired Mary for her drive and motivation to work hard.

Mary has a marathon PR of 3:06 which she ran in super hot conditions at Boston 2016. Before her love for running really started, she rowed D1 at Fairfield University all four years of college. She lived in NYC for a few years working in Fashion Marketing, before getting married and moving out of the city with her husband Gabe. She currently works as a trainer and running coach for McKirdy Trained.

In this episode, Mary and I talk about training, rowing, body image, overcoming an eating disorder, baby names (of course), belly button rings, what she’s loving and all kind of other fun stuff!

Kara Goucher is a two time Olympian, a Silver medalist in the World Championships in the 10K, a mother, a wife, an author, and a women’s running community builder. Kara’s career is long and not one without hardship and injuries. In her decades of running she also grabbed third place in both the NYC and Boston Marathon.

Kara is a guest you all have been requesting for YEARS. I always knew once we had this conversation it would be a good one- Kara made me feel like I was talking to a friend I’d had for years. Listening back as I edited I actually felt like I was so comfortable I forgot it was an interview being recorded for thousands of listeners. I hope you guys like that part of the conversation!

Kara recently announced she’ll be running the Leadville Marathon, so we get into that but first we talk about motherhood, her career, different coaches she’s had and so much more. Kara was so kind to stay on the line for an extra 15 minutes – so if you don’t get enough of her here you can join my patreon community for bonus conversation with her!

Hannah Setzer is an inspiration to so many and I can’t wait for you to hear her story. Hannah was born with a rare medical condition called Cystic Hygroma of the head and neck and has had over 50 surgeries since birth. She is eats soley through a feeding tube and has a full time tracheostomy tube as well.

Though Doctors told her parents she wouldn’t live long , would never talk or be active- Hannah has proven all of those things to be totally wrong. She is very active- has run 5 half marathons and for 500+ days has been on a daily movement journey- she does some form of exercise every single day.

When she was on her own fitness journey she realized there was a huge need for accessible fitness plans to be done at home for those who may have disabilities.  She has taken this project head on and is an advocate on a mission to make sure there are resources for people of all abilities to do at home workouts.

Hannah works as a Disability Rights Advocate in the state of Virginia and shares with us that she found her dream job after getting her masters in social work. Her and her husband Brandon are also currently foster care parents to a 15 year old girl.

In this episode we talk about all of these topics and one thing I was eager to learn about was her family life and how her parents raised her to be so strong willed and positive. An incredible family and an incredible woman. I hope you get as much from this conversation as I did!

Kellyn Taylor joins me on the show today to talk about her huge PR and course record at Grandma’s Marathon. Kellyn ran a 2:24:28, shattering the course record by 2 minutes, taking 4 minutes off her PR of 2:28 and becoming the 7th fastest American Woman in the marathon of all time.  She bounced back to run this race, just 8 weeks after a DNF at the Boston Marathon due to hypothermia.

Kellyn is a Mother, a Wife, a Certified Firefighter and runs professionally for NAZ Elite and Hoka One One under coach Ben Rosario. She has been training her butt off for years for a day like she had at Grandma’s. Kellyn has a long list of huge accomplishments, like finishing 6th at the Olympic Marathon Trails and 4th in the 10K Marathon Trials in 2016. Kellyn has big hopes and dreams for the 2020 trials and I do believe this 2:24 puts her in the game more than she already was.

I’ll Have Another Episode 25:

Erica Sara, Laura Anderson & Michele Gonzales

Welcome to episode 25 of I’ll Have Another! A few weeks ago I decided to make this episode a big deal because we are a quarter of the way to 100. I racked my brain to think of something fun to do for the big 25 and decided to welcome back three previous guests- but all together.

We set up a 4 way skype and Erica, Laura, Michele and I had a blast chatting about pretty much everything. In this episode, we talk about the Olympics a lot- specifically the women’s 10k and all of the doping suspicions surrounding surrounding the new world record, which broke a proven dirty world record. We also talk about the articles floating around and comments being made about sexist comments toward female athletes competing.

It doesn’t stop there though, we get into running safety, some deep personal issues and some light hearted fun stuff as well! I had so much fun chatting with these ladies and am so thankful for each of their friendships!! We also started this conversation with a ">facebook live chat– so feel free to check that out as well!

PS- Make sure you scroll all the way to the bottom of the show notes because we have an AWESOME Erica Sara Designs giveaway going on until next Wednesday!!

Photo: Myke Hermsmeyer, Outside Magazine

Jim Walmsley is one of the most competitive and fastest ultra runners in the World. Relatively “new” to the scene, he started ultra running to get through some hard times in his life and got serious into training in 2015.  He trains in Flagstaff, AZ with the Coconino Cowboys and is sponsored by Hoka One One, Cliff bar and Nathan Hydration. He holds 16 course records on ultra courses- including Lake Sonoma 50, the Speedgoat 50K, JFK 50 Miler and Gorge Waterfalls 100K. Not to mention some crazy fastest known times on trails like Rim to Rim to Rim.

In just one week he is racing the prestigious Western States 100 mile endurance race for the third time- he was a heavy favorite in both 2016 and 2017 when both times the race didn’t go as planned. In 2016, he got lost on the trail 93 miles into the race when he had had a lead of over an hour and was on track to crush the course record of 14:46:44. He finished the race that day in 20th place in a time of 18:45:36 with an attitude we can all learn something from. In 2017 – again a favorite to win the race, he had to drop around mile 73 due to fueling and stomach issues.

He’s been training hard in 2018 to give it another go on June 23rd.  He just crushed his own Lake Sonoma 50 record a couple of months ago. Jim has a confidence and drive that will inspire you and hopefully make you think on the fact that it’s good and healthy to have big goals and big dreams and even when those don’t work out the first or the second time; that getting back at it and going for it again is admirable. I can’t wait to see what Jim does this year and how he races the course.

Enjoy my conversation with Jim Walmsley!
