Rank #1: [018]: Original Series Associate Producer John Teichmann

Welcome Back, Jeremy Corray! You will find Jeremy and John Teichmann have a lot in common in this episode, as we go back in time to when the first tapes were delivered to WEP, and an innocent mistake in shipping led to Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

Original Series Associate Producer John Teichmann gives Marc and Jeremy a first-hand account of what it was like to be involved with the Voltron phenomenon from the beginning, and what keeps people talking about it to this very day.

John identifies some of the key features that made broadcasters buy into the Voltron promise, including excellent stereo sound by Paul Vitello and his team, superior music by John Petersen and Dale Schacker, and great writing by Jameson Brewer, Marc Handler, and the rest of the writing team.

John gives insight into a side of the Voltron story we had not ever heard before, and details what he has been doing since Voltron finished its original television run in 1986.

All we can say is, when do we get to see Albegas?

Rank #4: Voltron Legendary Defender SDCC Panel Review

Podcast cover

Dani DeWald, Voltron Superfan and panel videographer at SDCC, joins Marc and Greg to review her coverage of the Voltron Legendary Defender panel at San Diego Comic-Con. We walk through the entire panel, and give commentary on all the clips, Q & A, and review the Season 1 Soundtrack that was recently released on iTunes. Plus, you need to listen closely to find out how to win variant cover copies of Voltron Legendary Defender #1 Comic, signed by authors Tim Hedrick and Mitch Iverson.

The DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) included panelists Joaquim Dos Santos (Executive Producer), Lauren Montgomery (C0-Executive Producer), and Tim Hedrick (Head Writer). A surprise panelist was added, which makes the audience go crazy! Steven Yeun, who plays Keith, Voltron paladin and pilot of Red Lion, was on the panel and shared his perspective of Season 1 of Voltron Legendary Defender.

During the panel review, one of the Q & A questions was if we'd ever hear the original Voltron theme from 1984 used in the new show. Legally, they can't use the original theme in this show, and the producers let the audience know that you will not be hearing the original theme music in this show. So, now that this question is definitively laid to rest, let's celebrate the music of the first season of Voltron Legendary Defender, which is now available as a digital download on iTunes at:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/dreamworks-voltron-legendary/id1133408932

Thank you to the creator of the Voltron Legendary Defender theme, Alex Geringas, and the show's musical composers, Brad Breeck and Brian Parkhurst, for this wonderful album of music compiled from the first season of our favorite show on Netflix.

Would you like to win 2 variant copies of Lion Forge's Voltron Legendary Defender #1 Comic Book, signed by authors Tim Hedrick and Mitch Iverson? We had the SDCC Exclusive Variant Cover and the other Variant Cover signed at SDCC by both Tim and Mitch and the Lion Forge Comics booth. Only 1 winner, and yes, you can be anywhere in the world and we'll ship them to you!

To be eligible to have a random chance to win, you need to Tweet @LetsVoltron a picture of our "Let's Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast" 8-bit logo or the name, "Let's Voltron" with some of your favorite Voltron gear. You can put the hashtag - #LetsVoltron - on the tweet. Get creative! You only have 1 week from the time of this podcast episode's release. So, entries have to be tweeted in by the end of day, August 7, 2016. We will choose 1 random entry from all the eligible tweets. Your twitter name will be announced as the winner on our Twitter and Facebook pages. Good luck, Voltron Fans!

Neil Kaplan (Emperor Zarkon in Voltron Legendary Defender) met up with us on the street at SDCC and told us the stories about some of the fans he interacted in line outside of the Voltron panel room 7 AB, and the fact that he and hundreds of fans did not get into the panel! Here's a picture Marc had with Neil:

And here's a picture of the Space Mice stickers that people who asked questions at the panel were given as a thank you for their questions:

And of course, the biggest piece of news on the planet is that we will be seeing Season 2 of Voltron Legendary Defender by Late 2016 on Netflix, according to the panelists at SDCC, and we can't wait! Thanks to the Voltron Fans that have watched this show (some people like Dani have seen the full 1st season 23 times!) and have made it so popular! Thanks to you, we are getting more seasons of this wonderful animated series.

Marc Morrell and Special Guest Host Dan Jolley review 4 more episodes from the Original Lion Force Voltron Series, where they provide comparisons with the GoLion episodes from which these Voltron episodes were made. Dan provides a unique perspective, since he has watched these episodes as a fan when he was a kid, then watched these episodes as an adult writer, and had to research these episodes again as a writer of Voltron Comics for Devil's Due Publishing.

If you recall, we haven't reviewed the Original Series Voltron Episodes since Podcast #15. We finished reviewing Episode 8 The Stolen Lion (Stolen Blue Lion) during that podcast. So, this podcast episode covers the following Original Series Voltron episodes (Beast King GoLion episode titles in parenthesis):

9 – A Pretty Spy (Girl of the Land of Evil)

10 – Secret of the White Lion (Curse of the White Lion)

11 - Surrender (Red Rain of Hell)

12 - Bad Birthday Party (Evil Doings of the Emperor)

Listen as Marc brings back Dan Jolley, our special guest from Podcast #7, to discuss the differences between the Voltron and GoLion versions of these 4 episodes. This story arc shows that Princess Allura is still unsure of herself in her role on the team. It also shows that Voltron is not always the one who saves the day.

Marc closes out the episode with a preview of upcoming episodes, including a surprise episode from San Diego Comic-Con, a Vehicle Voltron episode, and possibly, an interview with one of the voice actors from the original Voltron Series.

Rank #17: [014]: Wizard World St. Louis Comic Con Recap

Marc gets the lowdown from Mike about everything VOLTRON that happened at the Wizard World St. Louis Comic Con, including two panels and a booth, hosted by World Events Productions.

Mike goes into great detail about the process of setting up the booth on the convention floor, and what products were available to Voltron fans, including the opening of the Toynami 30th Anniversary Voltron for the first time! Mike also let us know what types of questions fans had when they came by the WEP booth.

Marc asks Mike to take us through both of the panels. Saturday's panel was the 30th Anniversary Celebration panel which was kicked off with a special new 30th Anniversary Voltron Compilation video, edited by our own Michael French. That really got the fans going! Watch the video here.

As fans lined up to ask questions at the panel, the first question was about the live-action movie, which was also a common question at the Voltron booth. Mike and Marc talk about this at length during the podcast.

There were many products that were mentioned during the panel, including the Toynami 30th Anniversary Voltron, T-Shirts, Hoodies, Hockey Jerseys, and more, and even products that didn't make the cut, like the Voltron Form Blazing Sword Boxer Shorts.

Also debuting for the first time ever was the Let's Voltron Podcast trailer, made by our own Marc Morrell. Fan response was great, and people were given postcards at the WEP booth, similar to the cards that were sent to some of the people that have participated in the podcast. Watch the Let's Voltron trailer.

We had talked during the podcast about making the Pop Culture Video available as a link on this notes page, but that video is something that will only be shown as an exclusive for Voltron Panels at the conventions. So, if you want to see that, you should try to make your way to either San Diego Comic Con in July or New York Comic Con in October.

Michael also talked about the Kids Panel that was geared to the younger Voltron fans on Sunday.

Once again, thanks for listening!

Rank #18: Lauren, Joaquim, and The Rise of Voltron

We can't emphasize this enough – please be warned in this podcast, we will be reviewing the entire plot of “The Rise of Voltron”. You WILL want to hear our interview with Lauren Montgomery and Joaquim Dos Santos, but PLEASE STOP listening when we start talking about “The Rise of Voltron” that makes up the first 3 episodes of Voltron Legendary Defender, if you don't want to be spoiled.

AFTER you have seen Voltron Legendary Defender on June 10th, at least the first 3 episodes, come back to this podcast and relive "The Rise of Voltron” with us!

We think you will really enjoy hearing from Lauren and Joaquim, talking about the show they've been working on for the last 2 years. There's a lot of exclusive insight, that you won't be able to get anywhere else. We want to thank Lauren, Joaquim, DreamWorks, Netflix, and everyone who helped us set up the interview!

We don't talk about it in the podcast, but there were two other things that happened after we had recorded this podcast. First, the was a Voltron Art Show on June 4th at the Hero Complex Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. Over 40 different artists contributed to this event. Joaquim, Lauren, Josh Keaton (Shiro), Kimberly Brooks (Allura) and Neil Kaplan (Zarkon) dropped by for the opening night.

You can go here (http://hcgart.com/collections/voltron) to order your own pieces of Voltron art, or if you are in the L.A. Area, you can still see the exhibition before it closes on June 19th.

Second, we heard that Sideshow Collectibles is putting the Voltron Maquette on Pre-Order on Thursday, June 9th, the day before Voltron Legendary Defender comes out on Netflix. However, this Voltron is unlike any Voltron you've seen before – at is is the design Will Harbottle and the team at Sideshow envisioned as the Voltron they would want to see in a live-action movie. It's price has still not been published anywhere, and we expect we will all know when it goes on pre-order at http://www.sideshowtoy.com/whats-new/voltron-maquette/ on June 9th.

Go here to see the Voltron Maquette trailer, which shows Voltron in all his glory: http://www.sideshowtoy.com/whats-new/voltron-maquette/

For those of you who wanted to know about the global availability of Voltron Legendary Defender on Netflix, this is the availability news we are getting from the Media site on Netflix.com:

The series will be available to Netflix members in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the Nordics, Benelux, France and DACH beginning June 10.

Excluding Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Japan, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Middle East and Russia.

For those of you who live in an area that doesn't have Voltron on Netflix, please make sure you direct your inquiries to the Netflix division that handles your regional area. The more people that cry out for truly global distribution of Voltron, the faster you can get the Defender you love. Just like we are being respectful to all fans by warning them of spoilers about the show in this podcast, please remember that several regions of the world are not able to see this yet when you communicate on social media. Thank you!

And thank you for listening!

The Original Voltron: Defender of the Universe TV Episodes are reviewed once more in this episode of Let’s Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast. In this episode, Marc and Mike finish reviewing V:DotU, Episode 4: The Missing Key, where Voltron forms for the 1st time. Then, we continue reviewing episodes up to and including Episode 8: The Stolen Lion.

Before Marc and Mike talk about the episodes, Mike lets us know that the first wave of Toynami 30th Anniversary Voltron Pre-Orders have shipped, and Marc gives an account of receiving it and opening it with his son, Lucas. This really is a great Collectors Set to own, and whether you preserve it as a collectible or take it out of the box and play with it (which we recommend!), you will marvel at the quality of the craftsmanship that George Sohn and everyone at Toynami have put into this 30th Anniversary Die-Cast Voltron.

If you still haven’t ordered one yet, here is a link to it at the Voltron Store.

Mike also reports that Issue #3 of the Robotech/Voltron Crossover Comic Series has been released, and WEP is offering a 3-issue bundle.

If you recall, Marc and Mike stopped reviewing Episode 4: The Missing Key in Podcast Episode #6 (We’re Space Explorers) just before the Voltron Force formed Voltron for the 1st time. So, this podcast episode covers the following episodes (Beast King GoLion episode titles in parenthesis):

  • 4 -- The Missing Key (Resurrection of the Legendary Giant)

  • 5 -- The Princess Joins Up (Fortress for the New Struggle)

  • 6 -- The Right Arm of Voltron (Death of Shirogane the Hero)

  • 7 -- The Lion Has New Claws (The Beautiful Princess' Battle)

  • 8 -- The Stolen Lion (Stolen Blue Lion)

Listen as we discuss the precarious situation of the Voltron Force’s struggle to defend Arus with Voltron, only to lose one of their own, and have the Princess step up to join the team. This story arc has many key elements that carry the series forward and establishes precedents for future episodes.

Marc closes out the episode with a special announcement for next week’s episode of the podcast:

Franklin Cofod, the Director, Producer, and Showrunner for the Original Voltron Series run from 1984-1986, will be our special guest for an extended interview that will cover a wealth of Voltron information that you will hear NOWHERE else. This will cover the next 2 episodes of the podcast.

So, what have you always wanted to know about the original series that is still unknown? What questions do you have for Franklin Cofod? You have until Monday, May 12, at 6 PM EDT to get your questions in. Respond in the comments on this notes page, or call 860-4MULLET and leave a voicemail question, or send us an email at letsvoltronpodcast@gmail.com.
