I really do love the feedback and guests that this podcasts has to offer! Many thought provoking concepts. My only suggestion would be to adjust the volume of the intro and outro recording. I will be listening to the podcast and as the outro comes on, I immediately need to lower the volume. That would be my only feedback to improve, otherwise keep bringing us the great work!

We're Only Human 13 - Calculating the ROI of Human Resources

Host: Ben Eubanks

Guest: Mary Ila Ward

ROI. Measurement. Data. Analytics.

Each of these words has the power to strike fear in the hearts of many HR pros, because let's face it--most of us didn't get into this profession because we're awesome at math, right? Seriously though, we can't deny the power of data and evidence to prove the value HR can provide.

Ben has often said that HR provides plenty of value to the organization in most cases, but HR pros just really terrible about calculating and proving that value. If that concept resonates with you, then this episode is going to help change all of that.

In this fun conversation with Mary Ila Ward, owner of Horizon Point Consulting, Ben discusses some of the underlying fears that HR has about being measured (hint: measurement isn't always an indicator of your own personal performance). In addition, they explore three case study examples of how to figure out the ROI of human resources in an easy, step-by-step manner so anyone can grasp the concept.

If you're interested in grabbing the slides we mention in the show, feel free to reach out to Mary Ila at miw@horizonpointconsulting.com and she'd be happy to share them with you.

Host: Steve Boese

Guest: Marie-Claire Barker, Global Chief Talent Officer, Wavemaker

This week on the HR Happy Hour Show, Steve is joined by Marie-Claire Barker, Global Chief Talent Officer at Wavemaker. a  global media, content, and technology agency to talk about modern approaches to performance management and creating a culture of feedback.

Wavemaker is a 8,500 person strong, global organization serving many of the world's leading brands, and recruits and develops talented people across many domains - creative, technical, and people who can envision and develop a shared future with their clients.

On the show, Marie-Claire shared how at Wavemaker they have developed and implemented an intentional, performance-driven culture, where organizational and individual goals are visible and shared, feedback (both public and private), is a point of emphasis and leveraged for professional measurement as well as personal growth, and how this culture of feedback and transparency contributes to organizational and client success. This is one of the best examples of how a traditional 'HR' process like performance management has been re-imagined and turned into not just an 'HR' program, but rather a key driver of business and operational success.

Marie-Claire shared how this culture has and is impacting the organization positively, as well as some advice for HR leaders who want to re-invent performance managment too.

We're Only Human 24 - The Best Team Wins with Engagement and Performance

Host: Ben Eubanks

Guests: Chester Elton, Adrian Gostick

What does it take to win as a team? How do we encourage each of our people to deliver the best performance without taking a bland "peanut butter spread" approach to management? Is there a secret to what high-performing teams do differently from the rest?

In this episode of We're Only Human, Ben speaks with authors Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton about their new book The Best Team Wins. Gostick and Elton have authored numerous books on team performance, motivation, and culture, and they are globally recognized experts in the field.

The discussion focuses on everything from collaboration technologies, to how to manage individuals in a way that drives engagement. In fact, the discussion even delves into micromanagement and the times that employees actually crave the attention of a micromanaging leader in their careers even if not in their daily work tasks.

Finally, the conversation wraps up by exploring concepts such as rapid onboarding of new hires to get them to full productivity, how one company pays new employees to NOT work in their jobs for the first 90 days, and the secret to how a NASA mission commander was able to lead a highly motivated and engaged team for months in close quarters without suffering a single dispute or issue among the team. You can learn more about Adrian and Chester here.

Hosts: Steve Boese, Trish McFarlane

Guest: Daniel Chait, Co-founder and CEO, Greenhouse

This week on the show, recorded live in San Francisco on site at Greenhouse Open, the customer event for recruiting technology provider Greenhouse, Steve sat down with Greenhouse Co-founder and CEO Daniel Chait to talk about how companies can become great at recruiting and how modern recruiting technology can help them achieve this goal.

Turns out, at least some of the process changes that companies can implement, like going into candidate interviews with a structured plan, or making sure you understand which are the key elements or attributes that are likely to make a candidate successful can elevate an organization's recruiting function into the top 10%.

Additionally, Dan and Steve talked about the market for recruitment technology, why it might be so crowded with solution providers, and why most recruitment technology providers have made a mistake by trying to make recruiting simple and somehow 'not core' to the business. Dan and Greenhouse feel that recruiting is hard, important, and are creating tools to make organizations successful at these tough challenges.

We're Only Human 17 - How to Build a Performance Management Approach That Works

Host: Ben Eubanks

Guest: Autumn Spehar, Stout Advisory

Performance management is one of the most hated HR systems in existence. Yet virtually every employer has a need to measure performance, set goals, and give feedback. So, what's the right balance between a system that meets the needs of business leaders and one that meets the needs of the employees?

In today's discussion with Autumn Spehar of Stout Advisory, Ben delves deep into this question by asking Autumn to describe her company's transition from annual, paper-based performance management to a technology-enabled approach utilizing continuous feedback, real-time recognition, frequent check-ins, and more. This conversation is more than theory--it's based on a year of practice in using the system, including the ups and downs that any company might face in this kind of transition.

Listeners to this episode will not only get to hear about Stout's new outlook on performance, but they will be treated to some insightful commentary about the connections between culture, behavior change, and other elements that some of the "headlines" on performance management seem to miss. If you're in charge of performance management at your company or you think your system could use a refresh, this is the episode for you!

Last week Steve and Trish were able to attend Equifax Workforce Solutions Annual User Conference in Scottsdale, AZ and sit down with Dann Adams and Mike Psenka to talk about some of the ways that more advanced capability and increased availability of data and analytics are changing the way HR gets done, and increasing the opportunities for HR to contribute significant business value.

Data is increasingly the 'must have' resource for HR leaders. It can allow the leveraging of that data and the related insights on pay, turnover, and job movement from a wide swath of industries and millions of data points in order to give organizations a better understanding of how their workforce trends stack up to their peers. It also means using data and decision support tools to ensure the organization is making the right decisions and remaining compliant with complex ACA requirements.

On the show, Dann and Mike share a few examples and offer some insights as to how HR organizations can get the most value from these data driven approaches.

This week on the HR Happy Hour Show, Steve and Trish welcome Dave Ulrich, author of the recent Victory Through Organization, over 30 other books, Professor at the University of Michigan, one of the foremost experts on Human Resources, and known as the "Father of modern Human Resources" back to the Happy Hour to talk Human Resources, creating organizational capability, and how Human Resources can continue to evolve to support the organization.

Dave talked about the new book, the key can be summed up in the very first sentences of the book - "HR is not about HR. HR begins and ends with the business." From that launch point, we talked about Dave's research (with data from over 30,000 respondents), the importance of HR as the enabler and driver of organizational capability, why the famous McKinsey "War for Talent" is only partially relevant to HR leaders, and some of the ways HR leaders need to adapt and grow in order to support the creation of org capability.

We also talked about NBA basketball, the Oscars, and the Spice Girls, (yes, and every one of those topics tied back to the overall theme of the show, that organizational factors have a far greater impact on business performance than do individual factors).

This was one of the most interesting, informative, and fun shows we have done. Thanks Dave for joining us!
