* 00:00 - Introduction * 02:56 - Scripture Narrative (Mark 10:13-16) * 07:04 - Free-for-All (Trick-or-Treating Best and Worst) 25:51 - Main Topic (Grace in the Classroom) On episode THIRTY-ONE of Let the Bird Fly! Mike and Peter stage a coup, ousting Wade, and installing themselves as permanent dictators of the podcast. Actually, Wade was just out-of-town, so for the first time you’ll get to listen to a Wadeless episode of Let the Bird Fly! (enjoy!). In Wade’s absence, Mike takes the reigns as we discuss Grace in the Classroom. We welcome Mike’s wonderful wife, Amanda Berg, to assist in this discussion. In fact, this topic sprang up from a conversation that she started with Mike about some of the challenges (and necessity) of applying grace and not just law in the classroom setting. Amanda has been a teacher for over 15 years, standing in front of every grade from preschool through twelfth grade. Her focus has been early childhood education and she’s served in both urban and rural settings, which provides her with a unique perspective. Moreover, she’s been able to put up with Mike for a long time and doesn’t even complain about it too much (talk about a saint!). We’re grateful to Amanda for coming on the podcast to give us her unique perspective and for putting up with Mike for all these years. If you haven’t done so yet, make sure to head over to our BOOK GIVEAWAY page to sign up for your chance to win a copy of Wade’s newest book  A Path Strewn With Sinners. And make sure to share the podcast and the giveaway with your friends and family! In this Wingin' It session, the ninth part of our series on the Divine Service, Mike and Wade discuss the Offering and the Prayer of the Church. And if you are enjoying it, make sure to share it with friends and family! And as a reminder, this is the ninth part in the series promised by Mike on Episode 33, which will cover various parts of the Western Rite. If you missed our previous episodettes on the Divine Service, you can catch up right here. And if you haven't listened to our full episode on worship, you can find that right here. * 00:00 - Introduction * 02:41 - Scripture Narrative (Reading from With My Own Eyes) * 06:13 - Free-for-All (Favorite Childhood Toys) 22:11 - Main Topic (With My Own Eyes) On episode FIFTY-ONE of Let the Bird Fly! Rev. Bror Erickson joins the guys once again via Skype to discuss the Swedish Bishop Bo Giertz. On the episode 50 Pastor Erickson joined us to discuss what led him to begin translating some of Bo Giertz’s works. This time he joins us to talk about one of those works in particular. Once again instead of the normal Scripture Narrative, Wade reads a selection from one of Rev. Erickson’s translations. This time it is from With My Own Eyes, which also serves as the main topic for this episode. They also find a way to talk about favorite childhood toys, which is sort of a metaphor for what the Free-for-All is anyway. If you are familiar with Bo Giertz, it is most likely through The Hammer of God. What you may not know is that Bo Giertz was a rather prolific author, but very little has been translated into English. Thanks to our guest, however, that has been changing. If you’d like more from Bror, you can check out his posts at 1517. The Legacy Project, as well as his personal blog and if you find yourself in Farmington, NM, you can find him pastoring at Zion Lutheran Church. * 00:00 - Introduction * 03:13 - Scripture Narrative (1 John 4:7-12) * 12:05 - Free-for-All (Terms and Phrases That Drive You Crazy) 24:41 - Main Topic (The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis) On episode FORTY-FIVE of Let the Bird Fly! the guys (sans Ben) get together to discuss C.S. Lewis’ book The Four Loves. Wade uses this book in at least one of his classes and Mike has started to use it as well, so they thought it might be an easy episode. Despite their lazy approach to the podcast, we think the conversation proves to be interesting (probably because they let Peter on to talk as well). Of course if you’re looking for really interesting conversation on C.S. Lewis, you should make sure to check out the episode that the guys over at the The Thinking Fellows podcast recently put out. (They have some great C.S. Lewis links up on the show notes for that episode as well, so make sure to check those out while you're there.) Before getting to The Four Loves, Wade discusses 1 John 4:7-12 between trying to knock Oliva’s book out of her hands and they all discuss terms and phrases that drive them crazy. (CliffsNotes version: Mike really...um...doesn’t have much to say, Wade is fascinated by existential postmodern thought, Oliva is like….um...not real sure, and Peter doesn’t have much to say, per se.) Eventually they do what they promise, though, and get to C.S. Lewis’ wonderful work The Four Loves. If you don’t have a copy, you can easily find a used copy, or there’s a PDF available here. On Episode 33, Mike and Wade sat down to discuss worship, or the Divine Service, and Mike promised a series of Wingin' It episodettes on various parts of the Western Rite. Well, this is the first installment of that promised series. In this Wingin' It Mike and Wade discuss the processional (a fitting place to start). If you haven't listened to our episode on worship, you can do that right here. And if you enjoy this Wingin' It, be sure to stay tuned, as there are more to come. Thanks for listening! * 00:00 - Introduction * 02:00 - Free-for-All (What one language do you wish you knew?) * 10:22 - Main Topic (The Epistle to the Galatians) On episode FIFTY-FOUR of Let the Bird Fly! Wade, Mike, and Peter sit down to discuss Paul’s epistle to the faithful in Galatia. Since the main topic is something of an extended Scripture Narrative, the guys decide to skip that in the Scripture Narrative on this episode. Of course, they’d never skip the Free-for-All….who else is going to wrestle with all of these pressing questions? After some stimulating conversation about just how American they all are when it comes to languages, they move on to discuss Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. * 00:00 - Introduction * 05:04 - Free-for-All (Animal Fights) * 21:51 - Main Topic (Preaching as a Means of Grace) On episode FIFTY-EIGHT of Let the Bird Fly! all four of the guys sit down to discuss Preaching as a Means of Grace. In the May 2018 issue of Logia: A Journal of Lutheran Theology, Wade published an article on this topic, which serves as the basis for their discussion. So if the discussion piques your interest, make sure to get your hands on a copy of that issue of Logia (or better yet, subscribe). Before getting to their main topic, however, the guys get the important stuff out of the way by discussing animal fights, how God's sense of humor is seen in the hippo, and whether or not a gorilla could make a shiv from a pine tree. (important. stuff.)  If you haven't done so yet, make sure to head over to the 1517 Podcast Network (which, after the description above, we should mention we do not speak for....and who may soon be removing us from their network) and check all the other podcasts in the network; you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy! * 00:00 - Introduction * 04:05 - Free-for-All (Something no one agrees with you on, but you know you're right about.) * 14:34 - Main Topic (Urban Education with Ben Clemons) On episode FIFTY-FIVE of Let the Bird Fly! the guys are pleased to welcome Prof. Benjamin Clemons into the studio to discuss urban educational ministry, something the Prof. Clemons has been thinking about and doing for many years. Prof. Clemons is currently a professor of Urban Ministry at Martin Luther College, in New Ulm, MN (yes, the very New Ulm that is home to this striking tribute to German heritage). Before taking up his current post as a professor, however, he served as a principal and teacher at schools in Milwaukee, WI, as well teaching for a year in China. Wade starts us off with something resembling a brief Scripture Narrative during the introduction, before the guys mostly flop in this episode’s Free-for-All. But their guest comes through and saves them in the main topic where they mostly avoid talking about Jolly Ranchers® (the wine candy)and instead allow Prof. Clemons to discuss how he got to where he is, a bit about his educational philosophy, and a whole lot about teaching across cultures. We think you’ll enjoy the conversation as much as we did. And a huge thanks to Prof. Clemons for joining us on this episode. * 00:00 - Introduction * 06:12 - Scripture Narrative (Acts 26) * 09:55 - Free-for-All (Favorite Beer) * 17:23 - Main Topic (Apologetics) On episode SIXTY-FOUR of Let the Bird Fly! the guys once again sit down in Wade's backyard this time to discuss apologetics. Apologetics is something of a  reoccurring theme for the guys (we blame Mike), in fact back before Mike joined the elite ranks of co-hosts on the podcast, he was on as a guest to discuss this very topic. If you missed that episode, you can find it back at Episode 27: No Apologies, Apologetics. This episode's discussion is less organized (I know that may be hard to believe), but the guys just wanted to take some time to discuss something explicitly that they seem to keep bumping up against on different episodes. So we hope you'll enjoy (or at least tolerate) another discussion on apologetics. If you haven't done so yet, make sure to head over to the 1517 Podcast Network (which, after the description above, we should mention we do not speak for....and who may soon be removing us from their network) and check all the other podcasts in the network; you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy! In March of 2018 Mike was invited to speak at Good News Lutheran Church in Mount Horeb, WI. We will be releasing that talk soon as a Bird's Eye View episode, but while he was there Mike was able to bamboozle Pastors Jonathan Bauer and John Stelter into recording this Wingin' It on Apologetics in the Local Parish. Rev. Bauer is the pastor at Good News Lutheran Church, where Mike's talk was held, and Rev. Stelter is the pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church in Princeton, WI. We are grateful to both of our guests for sitting down with Mike for the Wingin' It. We think you'll enjoy the conversation. At the beginning of the episode Pastor Stelter mentioned the International Academy of Apologetics, Evangelism & Human Rights, which Mike has discussed in the past. If you're not familiar with their work, do yourself the favor to become familiar. Thanks for listening!
