Rank #1: Episode 45: The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis

00:00 - Introduction
03:13 - Scripture Narrative (1 John 4:7-12)
12:05 - Free-for-All (Terms and Phrases That Drive You Crazy)
24:41 - Main Topic (The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis)

On episode FORTY-FIVE of Let the Bird Fly! the guys (sans Ben) get together to discuss C.S. Lewis’ book The Four Loves. Wade uses this book in at least one of his classes and Mike has started to use it as well, so they thought it might be an easy episode. Despite their lazy approach to the podcast, we think the conversation proves to be interesting (probably because they let Peter on to talk as well). Of course if you’re looking for really interesting conversation on C.S. Lewis, you should make sure to check out the episode that the guys over at the The Thinking Fellows podcast recently put out. (They have some great C.S. Lewis links up on the show notes for that episode as well, so make sure to check those out while you're there.)
Before getting to The Four Loves, Wade discusses 1 John 4:7-12 between trying to knock Oliva’s book out of her hands and they all discuss terms and phrases that drive them crazy. (CliffsNotes version: Mike really...um...doesn’t have much to say, Wade is fascinated by existential postmodern thought, Oliva is like….um...not real sure, and Peter doesn’t have much to say, per se.) Eventually they do what they promise, though, and get to C.S. Lewis’ wonderful work The Four Loves. If you don’t have a copy, you can easily find a used copy, or there’s a PDF available here.

03:27 - Scripture Narrative (Ephesians 2:8-10)
07:26 - Free-for-all (I love YouTube!)
19:17 - Main Topic (Vocation)
On episode TWENTY of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome the Reverend Doctor Michael Berg to discuss the topic of vocation. Before getting to our main topic, though, Wade brings up his kids’ love of YouTube. Peter compares YouTube to Aldous Huxley’s soma; and Wade claims that he’s not responsible for his children, because they were raised by YouTube. Shortly after Wade’s defensive confession, the guys find their way to the main topic of Christian vocation. Dr. Berg leads the guys through a fascinating conversation (one that hopefully leads to some Wingin’ It episodettes and maybe even another full-length episode at some point), which includes a discussion of the masks of God, Law and Gospel, vertical and horizontal ethical orientations, the radical freedom that the Gospel provides, and more big questions than you can shake a stick at.
If you’re looking for more on vocation, Dr. Berg mentioned Gustaf Wingren and Gene Edward Veith as two authors to check out. So to get you started, here are a couple of links:
Gustaf Wingren’s Luther on Vocation
Gene Edward Veith Jr.’s God at Work: Your Christian Vocation in All of Life

Wade also mentioned Steven Paulson’s Lutheran Theology, so check that out too. And finally Wade mentioned his Wingin’ It session on Luther’s On the Bondage of the Will, which you haven’t listened to yet, you can do right here.

Rank #4: Wingin’ It 15.1: An Uncompromising Gospel | Adiaphoristic Controversy

Podcast cover
Read more
In this Wingin' It session Wade discusses the next section from his book An Uncompromising Gospel: Lutheranism’s First Identity Crisis and Lessons for Today. This section deals with a fight about stuff that supposedly wasn't supposed to matter--adiaphora. How did a fight about supposedly indifferent things show some serious fault lines in the theology of many of Luther's colleagues and friends, what are true adiaphora, and when do adiaphora cease to be adiaphora, or indifferent? These are some questions, among others, explored in this session.
Peter interviewed Wade on his book in Episode 12, so if you haven't listened to that yet, it will provide a broader view of Wade's book. And, as promised in that episode, Wade gives a more in-depth view of one aspect of his book in this Wingin' It session. If you'd like to listen to Wade's other Wingin' It episodettes on his book head on over to our Wingin' It page, where you'll find them all.

Stay tuned for more Wining' It sessions on Wade's book!

On episode TWENTY-SEVEN of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome back Rev. Dr. Michael Berg (he’s getting to be so regular, we’ll have to dismiss with the formalities soon). Dr. Berg joins us on this episode to discuss a favorite topic of his; namely, apologetics. All the guys are back together for this one along with a handful of their girls; we even have our first guest child on, as Dr. Berg brought one of his three daughters along to record with us. (I’m telling you, this guy’s getting far too comfortable around this podcast.) In our Scripture Narrative Wade takes us through a bit of Revelation and points us to Dr. Berg’s fantastic chapel sermon from the feast day of St. Michael and All Angels. The kids discuss their favorite breakfast foods with the guys, and Wade forces Oliva to wait for her turn to talk (it doesn’t go well). Finally we make it to the main topic, where Dr. Berg wonders why he agreed to come on the podcast….again; as the guys seem more eager to talk about their how Dr. Kerry Kuehn might be doing with the revelation that the earth may be flat, than to discuss the great work going on at International Academy of Apologetics, Evangelism, and Human Rights. (And seriously, they’re doing great work...and it’ a great excuse to visit France, so you should check it out!) If you can tune out the guys, however, and listen to Dr. Berg, you’ll recognize why he’s quickly becoming a fixture at Let the Bird Fly!
If you haven’t listened to Dr. Berg’s previous episode or Wingin’ It with us, make sure you check them out:

Johnston and Berg present on Christian Freedom and Christian Vocation. The lectures are Saturday, October 14th, 2017 from 3:30 - 5:30.
And finally a handful of links from the episode that were mentioned:

On episode FIFTY-SIX of Let the Bird Fly! the guys have a full house, with all four of them present, plus three guests. Fortunately, Wade invented them over to Rev. John Bortulin’s house (one of their guests) to record.
Before getting going on this episode, Wade discusses the exciting news that Let the Bird Fly! has joined the 1517 Podcast Network. This has been announced on Facebook previously, but this is the first time on the podcast. If you’re not familiar with 1517., head on over to their website and check them out. And while you’re there, make sure to take a look at the other 7 podcasts in their network; you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy! A huge thank you to the 1517 Podcast Network for bringing us on-board and for the support they’ve already given us. We’re excited to be able to bring our conversation to an even broader audience.
So, after a somewhat protracted introduction, Mike reads a few verses from Romans 10, which serve as a bit of a primer for our Main Topic: The Divine Call. Since we had 5 pastors (and two guys who flunked out of “pastor school”), we thought it would be good to discuss the calling process and how each of these pastors have managed it. We are thankful to Pastor Ben Zak (currently serving at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Milwaukee), Pastor Brian Doebler (currently teaching at Wisconsin Lutheran High School in Milwaukee), and Pastor John Bortulin (current serving  at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mukwonago, WI) for joining us on this episode. And an extra thanks to Rev. Bortulin for opening his home to us to record, we won't forget it (what time next week, John?).

On episode EIGHTY-TWO of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome onto the show Dr. Martin Moldenhauer, who teaches on the English faculty at Wisconsin Lutheran College. But instead of talking Shakespeare, American literature, or the metamorphic process or writing (all topics Dr. Moldenhauer would be fantastic on as well), they sit down to talk about another personal and professional interest of Dr. Moldenhauer's: the importance of travel. After indulging in some discussion of their own Wanderlust, they ponder the benefits of experiencing different cultures. In the end, they take as their theme the famous Mark Twain quote: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” We hope you are able to sit back and enjoy the discussion.

In this Wingin' It session Wade discusses the next section from his book An Uncompromising Gospel: Lutheranism’s First Identity Crisis and Lessons for Today. This section we pick up one of the central debates from On the Bondage of the Will; namely, synergism and the free will. The synergistic controversy has proved to be one that persists up to today (and I'm guessing it may make it to the next generation too). So despite its fancy name, it is one that deserves perennial attention.
Peter interviewed Wade on his book in Episode 12, so if you haven't listened to that episode yet, it will provide a broader view of Wade's book. And, as promised in that episode, Wade provides a more in-depth discussion of one aspect of his book in this Wingin' It session. Rank #11: Wingin’ It 26.2: Mike and Wade Talk Collars

Podcast cover

In this Wingin' It episodette, Wade and Mike discuss why they wear clerical collars and why other pastors might find them beneficial. At the end of the day, both agree that they would rather have someone preach the gospel and administer the sacraments rightly, wearing whatever, than to have someone wear a clerical collar and not be about the gospel. That being said, Wade and Mike discuss how wearing the collar has provided some evangelism opportunities, fun conversations, and ministry experiences. Mike also demonstrates that he's more sanctified than Wade while driving and hits Wade right in the gut with some humor. (Don't worry, we're confident Wade will survive it, but it does go to show that we should have Mike on more often.)
Speaking of having Mike on, you may remember Dr. Mike Berg from Episode 20, where he came on to discuss vocation. Now that he's in the office next-door to Wade, we hope you'll be hearing from him more regularly (no pressure, Mike; but seriously we just told the world you'd be on more, so you kinda gotta do it now). And if you haven't listened to Episode 20 yet, do yourself the favor of downloading it now (it's definitely not one to be missed).

00:00 - Introduction
04:02 - Free-for-All (Place you'd most like to record an episode)
12:09 - Main Topic (This is Water)
On episode ONE HUNDRED (they finally did it) of Let the Bird Fly! the guys sit down (sans Ben despite their best efforts to get him there) to discuss the commencement address This is Water by David Foster Wallace. They've mentioned Wallace on previous episodes and even dedicated an entire episode to his Consider the Lobster. Before diving into the main topic, the guys decided to commemorate their (official) 100th episode by asking the question Where would you most like to record an episode. Wade takes them to Detroit (because Wade), Mike doesn't know the capital of Albania, and Peter is a bit salty that they're not recording in West Allis (don't worry, though, they made it there right after recording). But the real reason they got together was to discuss the talk by David Foster Wallace, and that they do. If you'd like to listen to Wallace's This is Water, you can do so right here; and if you'd like to read it, you can find the text right here.
We would like to thank all of our listeners for joining the conversation over the past couple of years. It's amazing that we've made it to 100 (official) episodes and no one is more surprised by that than we are. It's been a fun ride. We hope you've been digging it as much as we have. 00:00 - Introduction
02:57 - Scripture Narrative (Matthew 24:4-14)
08:12 - Main Topic (Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up?)

On episode TWENTY-EIGHT of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome the ever-patient Rev. Dr. Matthew Richard. If you’re a regular listener, you may recall that on Episode 26 we tried to discuss Dr. Richard’s book with him on that episode, but technology would not cooperate. We are extremely grateful for pastor Richard’s patience and understanding; and we’re thrilled that we were finally able to get him on the show. We think you’ll be pretty happy about it too!
Wade starts us off on this episode discussing Matthew 24:4-14, before getting to the main topic. You may notice that we skip the free-for-all in this one, but we think you’ll appreciate that extra time we spend discussing Dr. Richard’s recently published book Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? Twelve False Christs. In his book, Dr. Richard walks through twelve different false Christs that different people have presented to him throughout his ministry. As Dr. Richard says, each of these could be seen as a type of idol, that seeks to displace the real Jesus. The book is written for a lay audience and is very conducive to a study group setting. Through his narratives and explanations, Dr. Richard provides the reader with an honest account of these various errors, while the same time offering a thoroughly pastoral approach to confronting these false christs.
If you are diggin’ this show, we’re confident you’re going to like this book. In fact, we’re so confident that we want to give away a free copy to one lucky listener! It’s been a while since we did a book giveaway, and this book is too good to pass up the opportunity. For all the information go to our BOOK GIVEAWAY PAGE and register to win.
Even if you’re sure that you’ll win the book, order a copy to share with a friend (or your pastor). Dr. Richard has also provided a number of resources to go with the book, so order a copy and check out these great resources. Here are the relevant links:
Order a copy of the book (and download a free chapter right away)
Learn more about the book
Check out the free online course designed for the book

On episode EIGHTY-SIX of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome back Rev. Dr. Mark Braun from Wisconsin Lutheran College. If you haven't heard the past episodes with Dr. Braun, do yourself the favor or rectifying that right here. But first, give this episode in which the guys discuss The Two Kingdoms, a topic that they've brushed up against in more than an episode or two in the past. A big thanks to Dr. Braun for joining us once again! We hope you enjoy the conversation.

21:51 - Main Topic (Preaching as a Means of Grace)

On episode FIFTY-EIGHT of Let the Bird Fly! all four of the guys sit down to discuss Preaching as a Means of Grace. In the May 2018 issue of Logia: A Journal of Lutheran Theology, Wade published an article on this topic, which serves as the basis for their discussion. So if the discussion piques your interest, make sure to get your hands on a copy of that issue of Logia (or better yet, subscribe).
Before getting to their main topic, however, the guys get the important stuff out of the way by discussing animal fights, how God's sense of humor is seen in the hippo, and whether or not a gorilla could make a shiv from a pine tree. (important. stuff.)

On episode SIXTY-FOUR of Let the Bird Fly! the guys once again sit down in Wade's backyard this time to discuss apologetics. Apologetics is something of a  reoccurring theme for the guys (we blame Mike), in fact back before Mike joined the elite ranks of co-hosts on the podcast, he was on as a guest to discuss this very topic. If you missed that episode, you can find it back at Episode 27: No Apologies, Apologetics. This episode's discussion is less organized (I know that may be hard to believe), but the guys just wanted to take some time to discuss something explicitly that they seem to keep bumping up against on different episodes. So we hope you'll enjoy (or at least tolerate) another discussion on apologetics.

On episode TWENTY-ONE of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome Professor Sheena Finnigan to discuss the value of history (spoiler alert: she’s a professor of history). Wade points out that history is important enough to find a prominent place in the Gospel according to St. Luke, and Oliva gets a bit too dark for Wade and Peter during the free-for-all. As always happens, however, we eventually make it to the main topic, where Professor Finnigan and Wade enjoy geeking out over history stuff (don't worry, it doesn't get too heady). Sheena discusses her primary research area, which is the history of motherhood and birthing in ancient Rome. This leads into a discussion of home births, which naturally causes Peter to mention Jim Gaffigan’s hilarious bit on home birth (if you haven’t seen it yet, you can do so here). Wade enjoys picking Professor Finnigan’s brain about some specifics and a whole lot of general history questions. The discussion ranges from home births to the difference between social/cultural history and intellectual history to uteri and even to some propaganda talk. We’re tremendously grateful to Professor Finnigan for joining us. Whether history is your thing not, we’re confident you’ll enjoy this episode.

On episode NINETY-FIVE of Let the Bird Fly! Wade, Mike and Peter sit down to discuss a presentation Wade has been giving entitled Law & Gospel: A Lens for Life. It's clear that Wade has no trouble talking, but then you throw Peter and Mike into the mix....well, let's just say this is Part 1 of their discussion on this topic (here's to hoping they can keep it to just two parts). Before getting to the Main Topic, though, Mike and Peter revisit the book giveaway promised on Episode 87. To refresh your memory, there were four copies of Valerie Locklaire's book Called to Defend: An Apologetics Handbook for the Middle School Student, that we promised to give away to the listeners would could come up with the most cringe-worth memories of Wade from the podcast so far. Thank you to all who submitted entries. We wish we'd had time to read them all! And thank you to Mike for the late submission as well. We hope you enjoy the episode.
If you'd like more information on the Apologetics course Mike is offering at Wisconsin Lutheran College during the summer of 2019, you can find all that information right here. Rank #19: Wingin’ It 35.2: Religions and Denominations, False Teachers and Heretics

In this brief Wingin' It (is Wade ever brief?), Wade discusses the difference between some key terms. What's the difference between a religion and a denomination, a false teacher and a heretic? How do they relate, and how do we relate to them? Are these terms sometimes used irresponsibly, too lightly or quickly? Are they sometimes not used often enough? How should Christians deal with differences on teaching and with authors, whether from the past or the present, who have perhaps erred on certain points while making valuable contributions on others? Wade delves, briefly, into such questions in this session.
We hope you enjoy this Wingin' It. If you're digging the podcast, we'd be thrilled if you'd share it with your friends, subscribe, rate, and review us on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, or TuneIn Radio.

On episode EIGHTY-ONE of Let the Bird Fly! the guys welcome Rev. Kent Schaaf, who is currently serving at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, WI, to discuss those two chief teachings of Scripture: Law and Gospel. If you're a longtime listener you'll remember we discuss Law and Gospel way back on Episode 11, and of course it's a topic that we've touched on many times through the past year and a half. We are grateful to Rev. Schaaf for joining us to continue the discussion. Wade and Mike frame the conversation around August Piepers writing on the Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel, which can be found in the second volume of The Wauwatosa Theology. Before getting to the Main Topic, Wade realizes that he's not Mormon, and the guys discuss life without either books or computers (spoiler: Peter's the only sane one in the room). A great big Thank You! , once again, to Pastor Schaaf for taking some time to join us.
