I reviewed the show a long time ago and tonight while listening I decided to look at the reviews. OMG! I can’t believe how rough they are. Those people don’t understand. I know you guys have grown and I appreciate the direction you’re moving in. Happy for you guys and wishing you much success

A big infomercial for their next product

have been subscribed since the first episode on April 26, 2012. I haven't been listening much lately since they switched to The Story Studio. These guys were great when they were first getting into self publishing, but recently it's all about selling services. I'm sorry, but if you were really successful with your fiction you wouldn't have to hard sell so many products to your fellow writers. It was nice while it lasted guys. I've hung onto the very first episode in case I ever need to listen back for inspiration when these guys were truly into writing. "How to get your words out into the world without contending with agents, publishers, or any of the other gatekeepers in traditional publishing." Remember that?

Rank #3: SSP071 Reboots

Podcast cover
Read more

Like them or not, reboots happen. Whether it’s an excellent remake of a Stephen King story or an excuse to cast Will Smith as a friendly genie, Hollywood loves re-imagining stories we’ve seen before. But why remake something old? And is this a bad thing? After all, we’d all jump at the chance to have our stories represented on the big screen. Today, Johnny, Sean, and Dave talk about reboots and what makes a reboot a worthy story to be told.

We Talk About:

New Dave tropes.

Why reboots get made.

Recent reboots: which were good ideas?

How to innovate on the original version of a story.

Knowing the “why” behind re-making a story.

Understanding why the audience appreciated the original.

Rank #8: SSP066 Elements of a Successful Sitcom

Podcast cover
Read more

When we first began writing adaptations for our novels, we had to learn a whole new set of rules that govern the visual medium. Since then, we’ve also transitioned into creating stories for film and TV out the gate, and that has required building new muscles and skill sets. While the same basics of storytelling apply to film and novels, there are specific conditions that must be met to have a story accepted. June is sitcom pitch season in Hollywood, and we have a sitcom pitch we’re readying for review. Today, we wanted to talk about what goes into making a successful sitcom and what to consider if you’re interested in building a treatment for your sitcom idea.

We Talk About:

Why Dave’s wife can’t leave the house correctly.

Sean is digging Dead To Me (https://www.netflix.com/title/80219707)

Johnny’s listening to The Brave New Weed Podcast.

How we remodeled our characters to work for a sitcom.

How we worked to nail the tone.

A difference between American and British sitcoms.

Setups and Payoffs of humor in sitcoms.

The danger in changing the tone of the story.
