#18 || The defection of a Roger Ailes warrior. "Very earlier on, Roger called me Ailes Junior. He told my dad, 'I've never met anyone more like me than Joe.'" As the protégé of Fox News chairman Roger Ailes, Joe Lindsley was closer to the man who built Fox News than any Fox executive. He helped write Ailes' speeches, sat next to him at executive meetings, and went to church with his family on Sundays. What moved the ambitious twenty-something to abandon the conservative media titan? For a deeper dive into his epic odyssey, check out Joe's memoir — Fake News / True Story: www.inkshares.com/books/fake-news-true-story

#32 Earning Your Stripes with Patrick Collison. On this episode of the Knowledge Project Podcast, I chat with Patrick Collison, co-founder and CEO of the leading online payment processing company, Stripe. If you’ve purchased anything online recently, there’s a good chance that Stripe facilitated the transaction. What is now an organization with over a thousand employees and handling tens of billions of dollars of online purchases every year, began as a small side experiment while Patrick and his brother John were going to college. During our conversation, Patrick shares the details of their unlikely journey and some of the hard-earned wisdom he picked up along the way. I hope you have something handy to write with because the nuggets per minute in this episode are off the charts. Patrick was so open and generous with his responses that I’m really excited for you to hear what he has to say. Here are just a few of the things we cover: The biggest (and most valuable) mistakes Patrick made in the early days of Stripe and how they helped him get better The characteristics that Patrick looks for in a new hire to fit and contribute to the Stripe company culture What compelled he and his brother to move forward with the early concept of Stripe, even though on paper it was doomed to fail from the start The gaps Patrick saw in the market that dozens of other processing companies were missing — and how he capitalized on them The lessons Patrick learned from scaling Stripe from two employees (he and his brother) to nearly 1,000 today How he evaluates the upsides and potential dangers of speculative positions within the company How his Irish upbringing influenced his ability to argue and disagree without taking offense (and how we can all be a little more “Irish”) The power of finding the right peer group in your social and professional circles and how impactful and influential it can be in determining where you end up. The 4 ways Patrick has modified his decision making process over the last 5 years and how it’s helped him develop as a person and as a business leader (this part alone is worth the listen) Patrick’s unique approach to books and how he chooses what he’s going to spend his time reading ...life in Silicon Valley, Baumol’s cost disease, and so, so much more. Patrick truly is one of the most warm, humble and down to earth people I’ve had the pleasure to speak with and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation together. I hope you will too! *** For comprehensive show notes on this episode, including a full edited transcript, go to https://www.fs.blog/podcast/ My free weekly Brain Food digest helps you upgrade your thinking. Airbnb's Brian Chesky in Handcrafted. If you want your company to truly scale, you first have to do things that don't scale. Handcraft the core experience. Get your hands dirty. Serve your customers one-by-one. And don't stop until you know exactly what they want. That's what Brian Chesky did. As CEO of Airbnb, Brian’s early work was more akin to a traveling salesman. He takes us back to his lean years – when he went door-to-door, meeting Airbnb hosts in person – and shares the imaginative route to crafting what he calls an "11-star experience.”

Rank #1: 10 Sep 2019 | Do ID.3 Batteries Cost Less Than Tesla’s, Audi Plug Ins and Mercedes Hybrid SUVs. Show #576 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 10th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. VW GROUP NIGHT AT 2019 FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW "The 68th IAA will officially open its doors tomorrow with the first press day, but as it has been the case with previous car shows, VAG is organizing a “Group Night” on the evening before the actual start. The sneak preview scheduled to last for about 30 minutes will give us the opportunity to discover what VW and its many brands have prepared for this week." says Motor1 - I'll bring you the ID3 tomorrow: "VW is going to introduce the highly anticipated production version of the ID.3. Featured in agonizingly long teaser campaign, the fully electric ID.3 will be the first road-going model from the group to ride on the MEB platform. It’ll replace the e-Golf in the company’s vast lineup and will usher in a new corporate logo." https://www.motor1.com/news/369661/vw-group-night-frankfurt-livestream/ DO ID.3 BATTERIES COST VW UNDER $100 PER KILOWATT HOUR? "According to the New York Times, with its MEB platform, VW has already achieved costs of less than 100 US dollars per kilowatt-hour for the batteries in ID.3 due to economies of scale, years before expected. At the same time, VW negotiations with battery maker SK Innovation look shaky." reports Electrive: "Although not expected for years to come, it seems electric cars can potentially already be made more cheaply than their combustion engine counterparts. Although the information came anonymously from the German car-making giant, it seems the Volkswagen is able to make batteries for its mass-market electric car, the ID.3 for less than $100 per kilowatt-hour due to their enormous economies of scale with their MEB platform. This marks the price-turning-point at which analysts have said a mass adoption of electric vehicles is invevitable. Volkswagen has had to use a strategy of diversity in sourcing its battery cells in order to bring up the volume required for its mass-produced electric vehicles. VW very recently founded a battery cell joint venture with the Swedish company Northvolt, and the European companies are setting up a plant in Salzgitter will initially be able to produce 16 GWh and build up to 24 GWh per year. With this planned capacity, however, Volkswagen will only be able to serve a small part of their own electric car production’s demand. In keeping with the times, Audi now offers the four-door as a plug-in hybrid. Say hello to the A7 Sportback 55 TFSI e quattro. The e quattro utilizes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 248 horsepower (185 kilowatts) and a single electric motor with a peak output of 141 hp (105 kW). the e quattro’s battery pack stores 14.1 kWh of power rated at 381 volts. It’s nestled neatly beneath the rear cargo area without sacrificing interior space, and it can electrically power the A7 for approximately 25 miles at speeds up to 84 mph (135 km/h)." https://www.motor1.com/news/369695/2020-audi-a7-sportback-e-quattro/ LAUNCH OF THE SUPERB IV AND CITIGOE IV SKODA is entering the electromobility era with the introduction of the new SKODA iV sub-brand. The Czech manufacturer’s first electrified production models include SKODA’s first plug-in hybrid, the Superb iV and the Citigoe iV. In mid-May, the company presented its new iV E-Mobility sub-brand in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava. There, the manufacturer also showcased the two first electrified production models in its history: the all-electric Citigoe iV and the Superb iV plug-in hybrid, which are both set to make E-Mobility Simply Clever. From early 2020, the flagship Superb will be available as a plug-in hybrid featuring both an efficient petrol engine and an electric motor. The Citigoe iV is the first SKODA production vehicle to be powered exclusively by a 61-kW electric motor. The car effectively has a range of up to 260 km. MERCEDES-BENZ GLE 350 DE 4MATIC AND GLC 300 E 4MATIC "Mercedes has pulled the wraps off the plug-in hybrid version of some of its SUVs. The rides are the GLE 350 de 4Matic and the GLC 300 e 4Matic. Mercedes says that the GLE has an all-electric range of up to 100 km thanks to the 31.2 kWh battery pack. The plug-in hybrid can also go up to 160 km/h on electricity alone." according to SlashGear: "The GLE’s battery can be charged at a DC charging station in about 20 minutes from 10% charge to 80% charge. A charge of 30 minutes will take the battery from 10-100%. The plug-in hybrid can tow 3500 kg, and its electric operating range is 106 km with an output of 100 kW. The other plug-in hybrid is the GLC 300 e 4Matic. It has a gas inline-four paired with an electric motor. The electric motor is rated at 90 kW with torque of 440 kW. Total system output is 320 hp and 700 pound-foot of torque. This car can reach 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Its top speed in EV mode is over 130 km/h, and the ride has a smaller 13.5 kWh battery pack. Its electric driving range is 46-49 km." https://www.slashgear.com/mercedes-gle-350-de-4matic-glc-300-e-4matic-gets-longer-electric-range-09590486/ FORD MUSTANG INSPIRED ELECTRIC SUV "Some people may get the creeps just to think of a Mustang-inspired SUV. Or of an electric Mustang. That would be heresy. Putting both ideas together would be either terrifying or irresistible. And that is precisely what the Mach E will do when it is presented in 2020. " Says InsideEV about a new video leaked to YouTube: "It shows the prototype of what seems to be a crossover. One that is very low and wide, clearly with sportiness as its main proposition. The vehicle also does not present a visible exhaust outlet. The Mustang-inspired Electric SUV will probably be called Mach E. Investigating recent trademarks, the automotive press name came along another one, Mach 1, so no one was very sure on which would be chosen. Autocar recently talked to Darren Palmer, Ford's Global Product Development Director for Battery Electric Vehicles, and he told the British magazine the car will have the Mach E badge." https://insideevs.com/news/369295/scoop-ford-mustang-inspired-electric-suv/ HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP INVESTS IN IONITY Hyundai Motor Group today announced its investment into IONITY, a joint venture established by global automakers. TESLA OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES IN ICELAND "Tesla is now officially launching in Iceland with its first (and likely only) location opening in the country and orders for Model S, Model X, and Model 3 can now be placed online." writs Electrek today: "Iceland is perfect for massive adoption of electric vehicles. The island’s electricity generation is already almost 100% renewable, which makes EVs super clean, and being a remote island, petrol is expensive. Albeit being sparsely populated with only ~350,000 people, there’s a significant concentration of population around Reykjavík and people have relatively short commutes that can be covered with most electric vehicles. It helped the country increase EV sales over the last few years and while we are only talking about a few thousand plug-in sales last year, it represents over 15% of total cars sales in the country, which is higher than in most other markets around the world." https://electrek.co/2019/09/09/tesla-launch-iceland/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. DAIMLER DROPS 20 BILLION EUROS ON BATTERY CELLS Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler confirmed the news: "With the purchase of battery cells for more than 20 billion euros, we are systematically pushing forward with the transformation into the electric future of our company." Board Member Wilko Stark said: "“With extensive orders for battery cells until the year 2030, we set another important milestone for the electrification of our future electric vehicles of the EQ product and technology brand. In this way, together with our partners, we ensure the supply of our global battery production network today and in the future using the latest technologies." "Daimler is investing more than one billion euros in a global battery production network within the worldwide production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars. The company purchases the cells on the world market. This ensures the best possible technology and focuses on the core competence of battery assembly. The global battery production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars will in the future consist of eight factories on three continents. The first factory in Kamenz is already in series production and the second factory there will start series production at the beginning of 2019." "By 2022, the entire Mercedes portfolio is to be electrified, with various electrified alternatives available in every segment, from the smart to the SUVs. In total, there will be well over 130 variants, from the 48-volt electrical system to EQ Boost and plug-in hybrids and more than ten all-electric vehicles powered by batteries or fuel cells." Rough maths: $22bn at $100/kWh / 70kWh is 3.14 million packs. Of course some will be smaller PHEV batteries, some will be pure BEVs. So I'll say the unthinkable - 20bn is actually THAT much over 10 years! https://www.daimler.com/innovation/case/electric/battery-cells.html LG CHEM'S EV BATTERY BUSINESS EXPECTED TO BECOME PROFITABLE IN Q4 "LG Chem is expected to begin generating profits from its electric vehicle (EV) battery operations in the fourth quarter of 2018." reports Just Auto: "The chemicals company has yet to make a profit from its EV battery operations to date but a number of local analysts believe the business has turned a corner as global demand for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles continues to rise and as raw materials prices continue to fall as due to improving supply. Rank #1: Are Fuel Cells Better Than Batteries?. Toyota and Honda just announced their new fuel cell cars. Although these cars won’t be on the road for another year, their mere existence raises questions about the long-term future of battery-powered cars. Are battery vehicles just a temporary detour on our road to the Hydrogen Highway, or are fuel cells a last ditch attempt by the fossil fuel industry to greenwash their “well to gas station” infrastructure?A fuel cell car is pretty much just like a battery-powered EV...except the fact that fuel cells are neither clean, cheap nor efficient. All practical fuel cell cars run on hydrogen. When you combine hydrogen with oxygen you get energy (heat in an engine or electricity in a fuel cell) and water. Pretty clean and elegant, so far.But we currently get 95% of our hydrogen by “reforming” natural gas. The natural gas is combined with steam (essentially H2O), with the end products being hydrogen gas and CO2. So “reforming” is kind of like a school for bad fossil fuels. Fuel cell cars using reformed natural gas are about 50% efficient, so they release even more CO2 that would be released if we burned natural gas directly. Moreover, fuel cell cars requires an entirely new hydrogen infrastructure of reforming plants, hydrogen pipelines, hydrogen filling stations and vehicles. One good thing about fuel cell vehicles is that they can be “filled up” in a matter of minutes, not the several hours it takes for today’s generation of plug-in EVs. But at the current rate of improvement in cost and performance of batteries, I doubt that fuel cells will ever catch up. For more about the comparisons between fuel cell and battery EVs, please Listen Up to this week’s Energy Show.
Rank #2: Understanding A Home Solar Sales Pitch. Ahhh….it’s almost springtime. The weather is getting warmer, the trees are starting to bud, and people are starting to think about their next home improvement project. And along with the warming weather, the solar salespeople are starting to swarm on unsuspecting homeowners like locusts from the plagues of Egypt. You may be interested in rooftop solar. But solar products, systems and terminology are confusing. As you do your research you’ll be inundated with TLAs (three letter acronyms)...and the more installers you talk to, the more you’ll get confused. On this week’s Energy Show we’ll review a Four Step Process that you can use to compare different home solar proposals.Step One: Compare Installers. Consider local installers, check references from friends and neighbors, and read online reviews. You will almost always get better service and faster installation turn around with a local company. When hiring someone to work on my house, for accountability purposes I always prefer contractors that have their own trained crews (not subcontractors or temporary works).Step Two: Determine the Cash Price of the Installed System on a Per Watt Basis. Just as buying a car, you always want to shop for the best cash price -- keeping financing out of the picture. Get a quote for the total installed system (no deductions yet for incentives or tax credits). Then determine the total number of DC watts of the system (number of panels times watts per panel). Divide the watts into the dollars to get a $/watt price for your system. Pricing can range from the low $3/watt to over $5/watt. For example, a system priced at $20,000 for 20 panels, each with a rating of 270 watts, will cost $3.70/watt. Don’t get distracted with varying claims about equipment reliability, inverter efficiency or panel degradation -- they are all about the same. Regardless of manufacturer or installer, every system will put out about the same amount of energy (and annual dollar savings) if it has the same DC watt system size.Step Three: Compare Equipment and Services. Solar panels are commodities, but you will pay more for higher efficiency and more well known brand names. All panels have 25 year warranties, and will operate maintenance-free (except for an occasional cleaning if they get very dirty). The only time you need higher efficiency is when you have limited roof space. Nevertheless, you may prefer solar panels that look all black and are mounted flush to the roof, or micro-inverters and optimizers that have built-in safety features, or a system that has monitoring that you can view on your cell phone.Step Four: Compare Financing. There are so many assumptions involved in financing, system output, energy rates and output “guarantees” that it is almost impossible to compare the total savings numbers. That is why it is easiest to compare cash prices or, if you are considering a lone, comparing interest rates. Watch out for escalation rates applied to energy prices (escalation rates will inflate your savings) and monthly payments (escalation rates will increase your repayment costs).Rooftop solar has never been more cost effective and reliable as it is now. Favorable tax policies, local incentives and net metering combine to make solar a great long term investment. So if you’re considering rooftop solar, Listen Up to this week’s Energy Show on Renewable Energy World.
