Very delightful! Love these two ladies. I’ve been looking for a fan cast for Miss Fisher and this one doesn't disappoint! I especially enjoy all of Chandler’s insights into period costumes and decor!

The Miss Fisher Philes are headed to Australia!!!

We’re making the journey to Oz in July of 2018 to be extras in Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears, and we are beyond excited! We’ll be reporting on our adventures on both this podcast and our new travel podcast, Miss Adventure. (If you haven’t checked it out yet, give it a listen!)

Do you live in the Melbourne area? Will you also be traveling to Oz in July? We want to hear from you! We’re hoping to organize some kind of meet up while we’re there. We’d also love to hear any tips you have for places we should visit—attractions, restaurants, etc.—while we’re in Melbourne, so please drop us a line!

And now, let’s head over to Studio 3JH.

Today we are joined by The Tailor, Chandler’s oft-mentioned husband, who describes the origins of the radio industry and the Golden Age of Radio. We discuss Dot and Hugh’s situation and how society would have viewed a married woman working in the ’20s. There is much drooling over the vintage props, and our costume talk is especially animated with three opinions rather than our usual two.

Kickstarter!

Hooray for the news of Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears!!! Go to Kickstarter to pledge, if you haven’t already. The clock is winding down, but there’s still time!

And now, welcome to Brown Town.

We needed to add some color to this otherwise very brown show, so we invited back the always-fabulous JoJo Stiletto to help us dissect this episode. Also joining us is the delightful and witty Sailor St. Claire, who has a past as a “reluctant wine maker” and also a wine reviewer. Sailor takes us through the process of making wine, we take a poll on feelz regarding the controversial scarf, we talk role reversals, and we revel in the sumptuousness of the final scene.

The discussion is also helped along by our imbibing of wine that hails from the region featured in the episode. Shout out to Patrick, local wine expert and fellow Miss Fisher fan, who helped us select the good stuff!

It’s here!!! Chandler’s favorite episode!!! We had SO MUCH FUN with this one (as you can tell by the length). We talk haute couture vs. pret a porter, commiserate with Dot’s clothing battles, discuss belly buzzers, the trials of adolescence, sad irons, and geek out over the costumes (as usual).

Welcome to Season Two! A whole new season of characters, costumes and Phrack to obsess over. And to start things off with a bang, we invited the delightful JoJo Stiletto to join us on the show. JoJo is a burlesque performer and producer, and her specialty is creating burlesque shows that blend feminism and pop culture, such as the Burl-X-Files, a show she produced in 2013. She reveals the exciting project she’s currently producing—one that we know you will ALL be interested in!

Please note: We recorded this episode earlier in the fall, so some of this news will be a little out of date. Specifically, Chandler’s Dead Feminists book launch has already taken place, tickets for JoJo’s Miss Fishnet’s Murder Mysteries burlesque show in January sold out immediately (but dates may be extended so still check it out), and Mary’s prayer to the Universe for there to be a Miss Fisher Con was heard! IT’S HAPPENING!!!

Some rabbit holes you may want to dive down:

“Kid Stakes” — the movie that Mrs. Blunt went to see that fateful night

Sally Rand at the 1934 Chicago World’s Fair

Faith Bacon in “A Lady With Fans”

Welcome to the #metoo episode. This one’s a toughie, chock-a-block with emotional triggers. But it’s sooooo good.

We talk about how deftly this episode handles difficult subject matter—Magdalene Laundries, rape, human trafficking—while also doing a good job of fleshing out each character a bit more. Did we know Mr. Butler owned an arsenal? Nope. Have we seen Jack wrestle with his conscience to this degree? Nope. Did we know that Phryne “once knew” a Portuguese sailor? Well, ok—that wasn’t exactly a shock.

There’s a lot of hard material to talk about, but we’re so glad the show tackled these topics. And we found this little tidbit from an interview with Kerry Greenwood for Inside History Magazine, with which we could empathize:

IHM. Q. Which stories affected you the most in your research?

  • Kerry: The miserable cruel lives of the women in the Magdalen Laundry. Reduced me to pulp, and I had to keep on reading.

Pull up a chair and get comfy, folks, because this is a long one!

Rather than try to separate the two-part season finale (“Murder in the Dark” and “King Memses Curse”), we combined them into one mega-episode. And, as you would expect, we go down some serious rabbit holes in this one (Egyptology, Agatha Christie, international trade and how it affected fashion, milk tops, etc.) and also geek out over the costumes, period details, and Phrack. You know, the usual.

The Awkward Episode. We’ve decided this is also the AU (Alternate Universe) episode. Phryne and Jack are not quite themselves, and everything’s just a little off. Plus, the plot is extra ridiculous—which is saying something!

What is the point of the Book of Hours in this show? WE HAVE NO IDEA. But Chandler explains their original function in ecclesiastical life, Mary reminisces about the role PBS kids’ shows played in her lifelong love of mysteries, and Chandler swoons over a folding step ladder and vents about a lampshade.

Ruby Rees

It was an honor and a delight to interview Ruby Rees at Miss Fisher Con 2018. Ruby, who plays Phryne’s adopted daughter Jane, proved to be a wealth of information and insight into the show, her role, and what it was like to work with her fellow Miss Fisher cast members.

She also discussed other projects, like the recent Picnic at Hanging Rock (available here on Amazon Prime Video) and her debut feature film called “Women By the Sea,” for which she is currently seeking funding. It is set to the be the first Australian film to feature an entirely female-identifying cast AND crew! For more information and to support the project, go to the Indigogo page. You can also follow her on Instagram at @rubes_rees.

Ruby delivered one of our favorite quotes from the Con: “I think anyone that reads a lot can do ANYTHING,” and left us with a beautiful and inspiring toast to the Phryne in all of us. Cheers to you, Ruby!

Special thanks to the Adventuresses’ Club of the Americas for coordinating the interview.

Also, the Miss Fisher Philes have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help us take the podcast to Australia later this year. If you enjoy this podcast and are so inclined, we would love your support!

What a treat it was to lunch with Kerry Greenwood! She had great tales to share, including why she created Phryne and how Phryne helped her avoid calamity. Her lovely partner David was with us as well and proved to be a “darling man,” as Kerry puts it. It was such an honor to speak with the woman who created the Phryne Universe, and we are very grateful to Kerry and David for taking the time to sit down with us. They are wonderful people, indeed!

Pack your bags! It’s off to the seashore for us as we head to Queenscliff for a bit of R&R. You will definitely want to pack your flask for this one because we hear the McNaster bar cart is sadly lacking. But don’t worry—the banter will keep you warm

As usual, we talk costumes, characters, and themes in the show. But also as usual, there is plenty of off-topic discussion, such as how animals get high, Waffle Cone Hate Mail, how our town recycles poop, and why Chandler’s husband takes a lighter to the fabric store.

And just so you remember what the heck we’re talking about, here’s a picture of that jacket. And Gerald. Who is orange.

We finally get some quality Mac time in this episode! It’s off to the factory we go to investigate the gruesome death of Mac’s lover, Daisy. And Murdoch Foyle rears his ugly head (but beautiful penmanship) once again.

Lots to talk about in this episode, including the seeming pointlessness of proper etiquette for these young women, historic bathing huts, the duplicity of men, the situation with Jane’s mother. And the Judo scene. How we love the Judo scene! (“Maneuver 1! Groin! Maneuver 2! Throat!”) If there was a Phryne Fisher School of Deportment and Self Defense, we would be the first two in line.

It’s the Movie Making episode, where Phryne is suddenly a film investor. There’s precious little banter, the American accents are a little dubious, but we do enjoy the exploration of filmmaking in the ’20s. Chandler talks about the origins of the “talkie,” Mary questions the singular use of the b-word, we applaud Phryne’s ability to win over a film crew, and we lament The Scene at the End.

Soooo, yeah. It’s been a while. Sorry about that. We recorded this about 10 days after the punch-to-the-gut that was the U.S. election. Things were still pretty fresh and there was no way we could avoid the topic. So fair warning—the first part of this podcast is very political. If you don’t want to hear our political talk, I would suggest you skip forward to 19:00 where the show recap actually starts.

As for the actual recap, we get into a lot of World War I stuff, costumes, Mrs. Bulwhatsit, Victorian Spiritualism, Jack’s reaction to the whole “sanctity of the boudoir” scene. You know, the usual stuff.
