#32 Earning Your Stripes with Patrick Collison. On this episode of the Knowledge Project Podcast, I chat with Patrick Collison, co-founder and CEO of the leading online payment processing company, Stripe. If you’ve purchased anything online recently, there’s a good chance that Stripe facilitated the transaction. What is now an organization with over a thousand employees and handling tens of billions of dollars of online purchases every year, began as a small side experiment while Patrick and his brother John were going to college. During our conversation, Patrick shares the details of their unlikely journey and some of the hard-earned wisdom he picked up along the way. I hope you have something handy to write with because the nuggets per minute in this episode are off the charts. Patrick was so open and generous with his responses that I’m really excited for you to hear what he has to say. Here are just a few of the things we cover: The biggest (and most valuable) mistakes Patrick made in the early days of Stripe and how they helped him get better The characteristics that Patrick looks for in a new hire to fit and contribute to the Stripe company culture What compelled he and his brother to move forward with the early concept of Stripe, even though on paper it was doomed to fail from the start The gaps Patrick saw in the market that dozens of other processing companies were missing — and how he capitalized on them The lessons Patrick learned from scaling Stripe from two employees (he and his brother) to nearly 1,000 today How he evaluates the upsides and potential dangers of speculative positions within the company How his Irish upbringing influenced his ability to argue and disagree without taking offense (and how we can all be a little more “Irish”) The power of finding the right peer group in your social and professional circles and how impactful and influential it can be in determining where you end up. The 4 ways Patrick has modified his decision making process over the last 5 years and how it’s helped him develop as a person and as a business leader (this part alone is worth the listen) Patrick’s unique approach to books and how he chooses what he’s going to spend his time reading ...life in Silicon Valley, Baumol’s cost disease, and so, so much more. Patrick truly is one of the most warm, humble and down to earth people I’ve had the pleasure to speak with and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation together. I hope you will too! *** For comprehensive show notes on this episode, including a full edited transcript, go to https://www.fs.blog/podcast/ My free weekly Brain Food digest helps you upgrade your thinking. Airbnb's Brian Chesky in Handcrafted. If you want your company to truly scale, you first have to do things that don't scale. Handcraft the core experience. Get your hands dirty. Serve your customers one-by-one. And don't stop until you know exactly what they want. That's what Brian Chesky did. As CEO of Airbnb, Brian’s early work was more akin to a traveling salesman. He takes us back to his lean years – when he went door-to-door, meeting Airbnb hosts in person – and shares the imaginative route to crafting what he calls an "11-star experience.”

Rank #1: BAMS ruminates about the first closed scrimmage. It wouldn't be a football season at Alabama without some injuries for fans to slam their desks about. Trey Sanders is not expected back, and there were some dings during this past weekend's scrimmage that we talk about as well. It wasn't all bad news, though, as several Tide players look to be playing winning football for the team. Markhail Benton played a solid scrimmage, and there was a Ben Davis sighting. Overall, it was another step on the path to Duke in a couple of weeks, and there are still plenty of reasons for Alabama fans to be excited for the 2019 football season. So join Drew DeArmond, William "Redfish" Barger and Thomas Watts for another hour of Crimson Tide conversation!

Rank #2: Trey Sanders, Josh McMillon injured: Who steps up for Bama?. The injury bug is hurting Alabama football once again. During fall camp on last week, both Trey Sanders (foot) and Joshua McMillon (knee) went down with medical mishaps. Sanders is expected to miss the entire season and Nick Saban categorize McMillon's injury as "concerning." While the Twitter world exploded after hearing the information, Stephen Smith of Touchdown Alabama Magazine dives into why the situation is not as bad as what most think. Rank #1: 2018 Alabama vs. Clemson. 2018 College Football Playoffs Alabama vs. Clemson Alabama Football Podcast Breaks down Alabama’s Playoff payoff against the Clemson Tigers. In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s Alabama’s dominating performance against the Clemson Tigers. Going brief on the show notes since we’re late getting this posted. Not just running the ball, but executing the handoff Jalen good and bad Excellent ball distribution Triple Option goodness Saban’s take on the defense Numerous defensive standouts Twinkle Toes Calculated Risks on Special Teams Mini Game balls Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune? Alabama’s Next Opponent What a time to be an Alabama fan! Next up is a National Title tilt with SEC rival Georgia. Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show Godspeed Bama Joe. Rank #2: 2017 Alabama vs. LSU. 2017 Alabama vs. LSU Alabama Football Podcast Breaks down Alabama’s 2017 victory over the LSU Tigers In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s win over the LSU Tigers. Turn it Up In many regards, Alabama played like Alabama has been playing this season. However, the results were a little muted or turned down due to the caliber of the opponent. We predicted early on that LSU might be the best defense the Tide would face all season and, to this point, that proves to be correct. The Tide still blended run and pass – with a stronger lean towards pass – and continued to distribute the ball well, with 7 players catching passes including a TE and RB. Loosen it Up On the other hand, Alabama played a little tight and certainly shortened the bench. Senior receivers previously seeing their roles shrink were cast into leading roles, and a running attack manned primarily by only a pair of backs – excluding a more active Jalen Hurts. Tune into the show to see our treatment on the running game and perhaps our single largest surprise when it comes to how the backs were deployed. Depth Watch Yet again Alabama fans had to watch as three significant defensive contributors were forced out of the game due to injury. This is in addition to at least 3 players already lost for the season. Check out our breakdown as to how the Tide can overcome the loss of 4 linebackers down the stretch. Underrated Ever wonder who might qualify as the most underrated 1st round draft pick is on this year’s Tide roster? Then you’ll want to catch this discussion. Mini Game balls Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune? Alabama’s Next Opponent Next up for Alabama is a visit to Starkville for the always tough Mississippi State Bulldogs. Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show I’ll spare everyone the elaboration, but suffice it to say that LSU fans really don’t like the whole corndog shtick, which personally makes it all the more fun. We hope you’ll check out the Podcast and in the meantime, Roll Tide!
