    • Rich is starting to take apart the R6 for a new chain and sprockets.  Enjoying the process of cleaning it up, looking for things that need to be fixed, and just becoming familiar with a sport bike.
    • Jon has 15k service done on the Spyder and learns that the semi-auto shifting requires good oil pressure.  Since it was a quart low, the shifting was not smooth.

The 2000 Yamaha R6 on the stands with the lower fairings removed.  Rich is coming up to speed with this type of bike and performing some maintenance before getting this on the road.

New bike Jon mentioned and belongs to Omega.

SHOW TOPICS AND LINKS FOR EPISODE 29:

We made an epic road trip to attend the 11th annual Vintage Motorcycle Festival Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL.

    • 2015 Attendance: 69,264
    • Jon planned out the route (using: https://trips.furkot.com) that allowed us to touch five states along the way:

Nice route from Rico's place to Birmingham, AL

The route home was much less exciting...

    • We had a quick interview with Richard Worsham (Founder/Designer) from Janus motorcycles and we'll plan to have them back on the show for a longer conversation in the future.
    • We also had a conversation with a rider following a demo ride on a Motus MST.

A few pictures from the trip below and we have a ton of photos and videos that we are working on for future release.

The trio en route with the chase car keeping us in check.

In this episode we welcome Rico back from his vacation, recharged and ready to rock the show.  Rico returns with a bang and the guys get right into talking about a day riding in the mounts.  Rich jumped on a rented Street Glide for the occasion to have some Bro-Time and we mix conversation from Rico's attendance of an Indian / Victory Demo days event.

    TOPICS:

    • Rico gave the guys a little review of his vacation with his wife Wendy to Costa Rica.
    • Rich and Rico talk about their meet up and day ride through Caesars head, Brevard (The Square Root Restaurant), Sierra Nevada Brewing, Lake Lure, and OMB as the final stop.
    • Rico attended and Indian / Victory demo event
      • Chief Vintage - Bike was OK, but front felt heavy and didn't like the windshield due to height and his size.  Had a rock fly up over windshield and hit his helmet.
      • Chief Dark Horse with stage 1 tuning - Rico was blown off the seat and not due to the lack of windshield and back rest, but the stage 1 tuned motor.  All that power and overall feel of the bike, put a smile on his face.
      • Springfield - New bike for 2016 and Rico liked this one as much as the Chieftain.
      • Scout - Fun bike, but was unable to hit the red line (9,000) and Rico's wife Wendy likes it and can see this being her first bike.
      • Scout Sixty - OK bike, nice package for a first bike or perhaps if you intend to only ever buy one, this may fit your bill.  Rico would say go with the Scout over the Scout Sixty for him or Wendy.
      • Victory Magnum - Sees why Rich likes the bike.  Instrument panel is further away from you when compared to Indian bikes.  It still has a good amount of wind buffeting.  Bike is very fast and corners well.  Overall Rico really enjoyed the bike, and would add it to his stable if he had the funds!  Also, Rico labels the bike as the Cadillac due to performance and smooth ride, whereas the Indian is more Lincoln plush and comfy.  :)

This episode we sat down with Jim May from Matthews Fun Machines and he shares his riding experience from last 45 years and his passion for Moto Guzzi Motorcycles.

Rico has made it back to the states, but is off traveling again with his new found mezcal.

We have officially kicked off our patreon page.  Patreon provides a way for us to establish the "value for value" relationship.  If you find value with our show, then your support is much appreciated.  We have three goals identified as well as rewards for different pledge levels.  Please visit our Patreon page for more detail and look forward to hearing more about this as we move forward and start to post Patreon only content.

Jon surprises Rich and Rico with the thought of giving up riding motorcycles if given a billion dollars.  As this was one of the topics from Matthew Williams moto blogging videos.  After Rich and Rico thought for a few moments they both agree they could as they could use put the money to A LOT of good use.

    Interview with Jim May:

    • Jim has been working at Matthews Fun Machines for 2 years.
    • We discuss new and upcoming Moto Guzzi motorcycles and the history of the company
    • Moto Guzzi started using the 90 degree v-twin in 1967
    • Modified exhaust can sound like a V-8 engine and some aftermarket exhaust is made across the street from the Moto Guzzi factory.
    • On the roof of the factory is an oval track.  Moto Guzzi still takes bikes to the roof for a 1-2 miles ride to make sure bike is function correctly before being shipped to dealers.
    • Bikes are 100% hand built in Mandello del Lario, Italy.
    • Jim has been riding since 1975.
      • First Moto Guzzi was 850T and trading in a 750 Ducati for it.
      • One of his favorite bikes was a Moto Guzzi SB1000
      • Le Mans line was another favorite bike
      • Previously owned a California 1100
      • Currently has a California 1400, which Rico test rode this back and we talked about it during episode 31
      • Has owned 7 Ducati, 8 Moto Guzzi, Buell, Harley Davidson and some small Honda bikes over his lifetime.
      • Has restored a 1970's Moto Guzzi 750 Bike and might see it a Easyriders show in Charlotte in January.
    • Jim said that Matthew Fun Machine is hoping to get 2 Moto Guzzi Flying Fortress once they are released.  One might be a demo bike so that will allow Rich to take it out for a little spin.

Rank #13: 35: 2016 motorcycles from Ducati and BMW with Charlie Hearne from Motorcycles of Charlotte

    Podcast cover
    Read more

Our guest this week is Charlie Hearne from Motorcycles of Charlotte and we talk with him about motorcycles from Ducati, BMW, Zero, Triumph, and events.

Rico is finally recording from his home studio after traveling and is enjoying some Kentucky Bourbon Ale he brought back from his travels.

Unfortunately Jon was unable to join this week due to family issues.

Rich has the KLR road legal again after an inspection and a little extra donation to the state for being late.

Conversation with Charlie Hearne from Motorcycles of Charlotte:

    • Charlie currently rides a BMW R1200 GS
    • Ducati xDiavel.  Should be showing up at the dealership around March of 2016
      • Has three modes (Full, Sport, and Rain)
      • Belt drive: a nod to cruiser style and is quieter than chain with less maintenance
      • 1262cc engine that puts out 156hp and 95 lb-ft of torque with a weight of 485 lb dry and 545 lb wet
      • A 40 degree lean angle is unique for cruisers for sure

Jon also thanked Rich for making a surprise visit to his birthday party that Natalie planned for his 40th birthday.

Review and prediction from 2015. (Rico did not partake and Jon had not join the guys yet.)

The boys are back...  After wrapping up our interviews from Atlanta we are back to our normal show format.  The guys talk about the Motorcycle Podcasters Challenge, the first Loud Pipes Ride, Road Hogs III ride, Atlanta trip recap, and some news.

Motorcycle Podcasters Challenge: We are going to have a little challenge between the Motorcycle Men, Throttled, and Loud Pipes.  The goal of this challenge is to encourage riding on a consistent bases and will award the podcast team that averages the most points over the month of August.  To help with the challenge the team at EatSleepRIDE will provide ride data and we'll be posting our progress on the ESR platform.  You can follow via the challenge web site or EastSleepRIDE.

First Loud Pipes Ride:  The guys joined up on June 24th and took a little ride from Blacksburg, SC to Little Switzerland, NA and back to Charlotte, NC.  This was a nice 300 mile trip that included the Diamonback (NC 226a).  Plan was to do the Devil's Whip, but thanks to Apple Maps we ended up riding the Diamondback a second time.

Road Hogs III Ride:  Rico was the only member of the Loud Pipes team to make the trip.  He talked about the ride and taming the snake.  We are planning to have another round table with the Road Hogs crew.

Atlanta Recap:  We talk about getting out of Atlanta and our trip to Tellico Plains, TN for the MotoVloggers meetup.  The riding was a great time, but the weather sucked as it rained on and off most of the day.  The group went to Bald River Falls via River Road and traveled the Cherohala Skyway.  Around mid afternoon the Loud Pipes Crew split from the MotoVloggers due to a long weekend from the Atlanta trip.  On the trip back to Charlotte the guys made a pit stop at Sierra Nevada Brewing.

Check out the MotoVloggers from the meetup:

    U-Turn:

In this latest installment of the Loud Pipes! show, the boys are joined once again by The Fashionista who has an Iron Butt.  We get a first hand report from Deb Gasque about her first attendance at the AIMExpo 2016.

    AIMExpo

For the past four years, held at the Orange County Convention center in Orlando, FL and Deb called it Disney World for the motorcycle community.

    • Entry level bike from Benelli the 302R.  Pricing is set at $4,400 and has a Moto Guzzi feel to the look
    • Yamaha YZF-R6 retails for $12,200 and will be available March 2017.  The new model will have 6 mode traction control, ABS, aluminum tank, and a magnesium sub-frame.
    • BMW RnineT - Micah one of the Riders for LoudPipes wanted to get Deb's input on this bike.
    • Yamaha SCR950 - Add another bike to add the current scrambler craze
    • Suzuki GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R - All new for 2017 and they have huge cans!
    • Suzuki GSX-R750 - had issues getting approval in all states, but is now 50 state approved
    • Suzuki V-Strom 650 and 1000 updates

    • Klim - now releasing helmets for off-road, dual sport, modular, and street.  Deb is testing one now and will report back.
    • BMW K1600 Bagger - Was not seen by Deb at the AIMExpo, but we will get a ride on this bike for sure.
    • Electric bike world - did not see a large showing of electric bikes.  Speaks to our thoughts that this is a long way off from becoming more main stream.  Still waiting for LiveWire Harley!
    • Changing location - 2017 its going to be in Columbus, OH and 2018 it will be in Las Vegas, NV.  Deb is excited about the changes as this allows for more people to attend event.  Also the state of Ohio is pro-motorcycle with several other things to do and see.  The September date should also help with people that want to ride to the event.

    U-TURN

    • We talk with Deb about her experience attending Barber this year, her second time at the event
    • She recommends that we should camp next year to broaden the experience
