Our psychological profile this week is on sexual serial killer, necrophiliac and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer murdered at least seventeen men and boys in Milwaukee over 2 decades. He is considered one of the most heinous killers of all time. His calm and controlled demeanour during the court case and interviews belied the true nature of the monster he was.

He was sentenced to sixteen life sentences – an accumulative total of almost 1,000 years for his crimes – Illinois does not have the death penalty. He would serve a little over 2 and a half years before being murdered by a fellow prisoner.

Aileen Wuornos is different to other female killers in that she acted alone.

She was convicted of murdering seven men between 1989 - 1990 by shooting them at point blank range.

Wuornos, who was working as a prostitute, claimed she acted in self defence when each man tried to rape her.

In one of her last interviews before her execution in 2002 she admitted she was lying about at least one of those allegations.

In 2003 Charlize Theron portrayed Wuornos in the film ‘Monster’, for which she won an academy award.

Forty years ago, 918 men women and children died in Jonestown, Guyana. Many of them were American’s who had followed the cult leader to create a new home and a new way of life.

On November 18, 1978, the small town in South America would be front page news around the world for weeks as stories about the horrors of the “People Temple” cult continued to flood in.

What began as an all inclusive religious group ended with what Jim Jones, the leader, called “Revolutionary Suicide.” Jones convinced those 918 people to drink cyanide of their own free will… although there is some evidence to suggest some were injected with the poison.

Forty years later experts are still trying to comprehend the reasons behind one of the biggest scale single day murder sprees of American people in history.
