Publisher’s Thoughts on Discovery.

Nearly two years after CBS announced that the Star Trek story would continue in a fifth spinoff series, the pilot episode, “The Vulcan Hello,” has arrived. Following a star-studded red-carpet premiere at Arclight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood on September 19, fans will get their first full look at Star Trek: Discovery on September 24.

In this episode of The Edge, on the eve of the long-awaited launch, host Mike Schindler beams in Trek.fm creator and publisher C Bryan Jones for one last speculative discussion of details ranging from the timeline to props to uniforms. Oh … there are also those Klingons and everyone’s favorite C word: canon. And when it’s all done, we have one more announcement.

The Red Angel.

Following the death of a Commander Airiam, the crew of the USS Discovery is left searching for answers. But the reveal of the Red Angel’s identity—and Section 31’s role in the mystery—only raises more questions. Meanwhile, two characters who have suffered a loss—Michael Burnham and Hugh Culber—begin to realize that they must move forward.

In this episode of The Edge, host Patrick Devlin is joined by Hayley Stoddart of Standard Orbit to discuss “The Red Angel” and the ramifications of the story’s many character moments. We also discuss the funeral for Commander Airiam, the crew’s reaction to her death, and how artificial intelligence can evolve in unexpected ways.

Through the Valley of Shadows.

Many fans already knew Captain Christopher Pike from the unaired pilot episode of The Original Series, “The Cage,” and the season-one two-parter “The Menagerie,” which resurrected some of that unused footage. In his first appearance, Pike is a spry captain leading his crew on a mission of exploration. When we see him in “The Menagerie,” he is confined to a wheelchair, his face covered in scars. What happened in between has remained a fifty-year mystery—at least on screen. Star Trek: Discovery finally filled in the blanks and made Pike’s self sacrifice canon in “Through the Valley of Shadows.”

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss Pike’s decision to glimpse into his future and accept the inevitability of a crippling accident to retrieve the much-needed time crystal from the sacred Klingon planet Boreth. We ask ourselves if we would choose to see our own possible future and accept it knowing that we could follow a new path—but that others would suffer instead. We also debate whether the Control artificial intelligence is present in all Section 31 ships and why it needs Burnham to further its mission.

Behind the scenes of cast and crew.   When the first new Star Trek show in more than a decade was announced, the first question many people asked was who would be responsible for bringing the franchise back to television. Over the past year, that question has been answered as a roster of top-tier talent was introduced bit by bit, both behind and in front of the camera. This crew covers the creative spectrum from veterans who have worked on all aspects of Trek’s past to rookies who have grown up with the franchise as fans but never worked on it.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Mike Schindler and Aaron Harvey are joined by guests Sarah Buck and Brandi Jackola for a look at who is working behind the scenes on Star Trek: Discovery. We discuss the past work of the cast and crew, and what we can expect them to bring to the franchise.

Time Crystals.

Star Trek has long used time travel as an element of storytelling, usually to get our characters to another place in time. While the methods may seem farfetched—slingshot around the sun, jumping through a gateway—they somehow have always felt appropriate for Star Trek’s scientific underpinning. But in Discovery, a more magical method was employed—time crystals—and were used not to move a character through time but to offer a glimpse of what is to come.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Liam Smart to discuss time crystals and how they would affect different captains. We debate how each captain might react, whether they would take the crystal if they saw a future they did not like, and how they would deal with the consequences of their actions even before the action took place.

The Cast, Part 2. When watching a show we love, we try to find characters we identify with. Many times, we do this without much thought about those who breathe life into those characters. It takes more then just good writing to truly make a character come to life.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Hayley Stoddart of Standard Orbit to continue our discussion of the talented actors of Star Trek: Discovery. We discuss the contributions their characters make to the show, their understanding of what makes Star Trek great for many, and their overall love of the fans.
