I just discovered Shane and Jocelyn about three months ago and it is crazy how much they have taught me in such a short time. Every time I listen to their podcast I learn something new and the community is even more amazing. They are honest and good hearted people who try their best to connect with their audience. I’ve already had the opportunity to have conversations with them and they are so helpful! I have taken massive steps towards having a successful online business and could not have done it without them. I am so thankful for what they do!

Today's Can't Miss Moment is actually a special one.  It is recording Can't Miss Moments with our children, Isaac and Anna.  They are at home today with us.  They are not feeling well today.  They were home from school and we thought that it would be fun to bring them on and share some Can't Miss Moments with you.

Can’t Miss Moment
Today's Can't Miss Moment is a snow day with the kids.  So far, we only actually had one snow day here in Kentucky.  But when we had that day, it was pretty awesome just to not have to worry about trying to find somebody to watch our kids, or having to take a day off work because the kids were at home.  Instead, we were able to stay right here in the house, we didn't have to get out where it was cold and yucky, and it was super, super cold that day.  Like, 10°F, something like that.  It was nice just to hang out here.  We did different things.  We did a snow day packet with the kids.  It's like work from school.  It we were able to work on that with them.  We played some computer games, because we're nerds like that.  It was a great day.

Celebrating the New Year with a Success Story!
Hey y’all! We wanted to start 2017 with a shout out to all our members, fans, listeners… all of you who have supported us through thick and thin, Happy New Year!

Our first episode is an amazing success story from one of our FYL community members, Marnie Ginsberg, Ph. D.

Marnie lives with her husband and 3 wonderful daughters in Madison, WI. She has been deeply involved with educational research and has been a teacher for about 20 years; her research focused on strategies to nurture readers and help them overcome learning hurdles.

She also became a private tutor and consultant. Her passion and dedication led her to pursue her doctoral studies at the University of North Carolina, where she coached and guided teachers through a unique and dynamic K-2 reading intervention. This brought in promising results from students who struggled in reading and comprehension.

Mrs. Ginsberg had long been intrigued by the online business scene. She has been building her blog and email list since 2015 and by October 2016, she had managed to reach a thousand subscribers. She then co-founded the Reading Simplified Academy and was successful in her recent membership launch.

Join us as we talk about Marnie’s amazing journey. How did she reach her milestone, what did it take to be where she is today and the lessons she had learned along the way.

We will also be brainstorming on how she can retain members and maintain the membership.

The year has just begun. We have a lot in store for y’all!

Success Story of the Week:
Today's success story comes from Leah, and I tried to get Jocelyn to read this one on the air, but she totally refused because she said, "This ain't me." She says, "Here you go, you read the subject line." So Leah writes, "ERMAHGERRRD--" ermahgerd, you know like the meme, "... MY FIRST SALE!" in all capital letters with a giant exclamation point.
"I lowered the price of my eBook a couple of weeks ago.  I've been running Facebook ads to get clicks in order to reach target later for my membership site, which has been simultaneously growing my email list little by little.  I'm offering my e-book and my autoresponder I am thrilled that I finally sold one.  I just sent a text to my husband, 'Made some big money online.  Ten bucks.  Giddy up!'"
Good job, Leah, that is awesome.

Rank #8: 4th Quit-iversary Special: How we flipped our lives & how you CAN too!

Podcast cover
Read more
5 years ago, we were both working as school teachers, barely getting by and living on someone else's schedule.
We were time-pressed parents with no control over our lives.

Our greatest journey started with a thought, "We want total control of our lives."

That thought led to questions like, "How can we achieve that?" which led us to take action, and THOSE actions later led to our success.
It started with creating and selling lesson plans online, which now has evolved to an even bigger calling.
It’s been 4 years since we left our nine-to-five jobs.

We’re full-time online entrepreneurs serving our online community, all while having the freedom to spend more time with our kids and each other.

Our lives have changed for the better because:

We figured out our WHY.
We opened our minds to the possibilities.
We took action AND because we did whatever it took to flip our life.

So, to commemorate our 4th quit-iversary, here are 3 of the most important lessons we learned that enabled us to quit our jobs:

If kids can do it, you can too!
Mindset Shift #1: Real people can do this!
Yes, this means YOU! :-)

You might think that you’re not enough, or that you don't have what it takes, that you need a PHD to come up with a brilliant idea or need decades of experience to succeed online… THAT IS NOT TRUE.

There were other people like us online and they made it work, so why can’t we?

I was a 0-10 head coach at one time, and built an online business that sold football playbooks.

Jocelyn was a librarian for just 3 years when she sold lesson plans on her website.

Don’t let the world dictate what you can and cannot do.

Folks working nine-to-five jobs can make money online. Parents can make money online. Retired, empty-nesters can make money online.

We believed and took action, that is why we made it.

You are more than capable to succeed too!

Shane's plan VS Jocelyn's plan
Mindset Shift #2: Making money is easier than you think
When you’re working for someone else, hard work doesn’t always guarantee your family’s financial security.

When you trade in your time for that paycheck, that is time away from your spouse, your kids, and things you’re really passionate about.

Which brings us to mindset shift #2, making money is easier than you think!

There is ALWAYS a way to make money online.

Because:

Solving problems = Money

Bigger problems solved = More money

Mindset Shift #3: We all HAVE the time
60 seconds in a minute. 60 minutes in an hour. 24 hours in a day. 168 hours a week!

We all have the same set of time and it’s really up to us HOW we spend it.

Prioritize what’s important.

What are your non-negotiables? To make it online, you have to be ready to make sacrifices. That means, cutting down on watching TV and even saying no to night out with friends.

The time you invest on building your online business today, can spell your success in the future, so you need to decide what stays and what needs to change.

Take control of your time, don’t let it control you.
We hope you had as much fun learning with us as we have while recording this episode for y'all :-)
Don’t forget to watch out for the Flipped Lifestyle’s “Our Story” Series, see you next week!

Rank #9: FL 191 – We help Teresa with engagement and retention strategies to grow her online membership

“I got this idea, but I don’t know if it will make me money.”
Does that sound like a familiar statement?

Have you ever come up with an online business idea, but thought “Nobody would ever pay for that!”

Well, don’t dismiss your idea so quickly because the internet is an amazing thing.

The internet changes everything and you could make thousands of dollars on almost anything you could think of selling if you just take action!

Yes, you’ve heard of so many business coaches, life coaches, social media coaches, and similar types making money online… well, today we have something different, and you’re in for a treat!

In our Flip Your Life community, we have a lot of different people with different niches, but this one is one of our favorites!

Today’s guest is Teresa Perleberg.

Her online business?

How about “Shearing sheep and turning their wool into a statue!”

Okay, that may be oversimplifying it, but it just gets better!

Teresa lives on a North Dakota farm with her husband and 4 kids, 93 sheep, 50 cattle.

Her husband had worked multiple jobs to provide for their family, she wanted to help out while still being able to stay homeschooling the kids.

It turns out that her discovery of an amazing craft (that utilized her sheep wool) would be the solution to this.

She does something really awesome called needle felting.

You’ll have to listen in to hear Teresa explain what that is in detail, but we absolutely love it!

She started selling her needle felted art on Etsy in 2008, then transitioned into making needle felting kits and selling them. And because her audience had shown so much interest in taking their needle felting to the next level by learning more techniques, Teresa had started a membership business on Needle Felting.

Her online business has grown to have a stable income which was enough for her husband to quit his night shift job and have more time with the family!

Now her husband and the kids all help out on her online business, working together as a family.

That’s Flippin’ your life, y’all!

Join us as we help Teresa on her membership retention strategies, audience engagement, overcoming technical problems, and growing her membership.

Anytime we can talk about shearing sheep in a podcast is always a good day!

Can’t Miss Moment:
We've been taking drives out in the country after we dropped the kids off. Just a good 15-20 minute drive, we've got the radio off, and we are just talking to each other about what we are going to do that day, sharing ideas that we have to grow our online business.  Maybe we'll run out and try to catch the sunrise over one of the hills here in our little town in Kentucky.  It's just been a really neat thing to be able to stop and smell the roses, I guess, and not have to be in such a rush to get somewhere.  I can remember how hectic mornings were when we worked our normal day jobs.

We could barely even see each other.  Sometimes, one of us would just sleep in a little bit while the other one got out of the house and wouldn't even see each other in the morning.  Now we get to spend this quality time together, and start our day always on the same page.

Rank #11: Our Secret Weapon for Online Business Success

Podcast cover
Read more
Live events are our secret weapon!
We’ve made it this far because of the conscious effort we put into the choices we make.
Some choices have bigger impacts on your life and business than others.

Today we’ll share with you our secret weapons for online success.

This is the single choice we made that helped us grow exponentially as husband and wife, as business partners and as entrepreneurs in general.
What's our secret weapon?

Choosing to invest in ourselves and attend live events!

Attending live events has been the single biggest game changer in our online business.

There’s something about going to a live event that takes everything in your business to the next level.

Being surrounded by entrepreneurs of every level is a huge opportunity far too good to pass up.

WHY? Everyone who goes to a live event is serious about their business. No one is messing around. Everyone is there to work and make the right connections that will help transform their business in the future.

We would not be where we are today, if we had not gone to those live events early in our journey.

The revelations you get by meeting the mind (or minds) behind the content, behind the business, will blow you away!
[Tweet "Attending live events has been the single biggest difference maker in our online business." - Jocelyn"]
Now that we got your attention with the perks, here are some tips and tricks to get you LIVE event ready!
How to Choose The Right Event For You AND Get The Most Out of It:

“WHO IS LEADING THE GROUP?”

You should trust the person leading you to your next step. Make sure you do your research and learn about who is hosting the event, what they value, the purpose of the event and if they have the content you need to start or grow your online business.

“WHO IS GOING?”

Take time to consider the size of the event. A smaller event gives a more personalized experience that lets you connect with others on a deeper level.

There’s less clutter, less noise, less competition for everyone’s attention, so the opportunity to build relationships with your fellow entrepreneurs is greater. This also makes asking your questions and finding the right answers even easier.

Remember: You’re not there just for the content. Go connect, build and strengthen relationships with your fellow participants, doing so will make a huge difference to your business in the future.

“WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES VS THE REWARDS?”

Invest in yourself and your business. We know how difficult it is for people to do this, but you must work on making a commitment to believe and invest in yourself and your business because the rewards are going to be bigger when you do.

Overcome challenges and remove obstacles. Being a parent makes this even more complicated since there’s going to be some guilt sinking in, “What will happen to the kids while I’m away?” But what if by attending this live event, your business takes off and in turn, it significantly makes your family’s life better, would you now be willing to invest time, effort and money?

You have to be ready to do whatever it takes to get to the next level and make that a priority.

Are you investing your time, money and energy in a way that saves, frees up and generate you MORE time, money and energy?

If the answer to the question above is “YES!” then you’re already part of the 10% who’s setting themselves up for success.

If your answer is, “No,” then there’s no better time than the present to START making the changes needed to create a truly amazing life for your family. Being resourceful is a handy skill that all entrepreneurs must possess, practice resourcefulness and go do what you said you were going to do -- DO IT NOW.
[Tweet ""Live events have 10x'd our business time and time again." - Shane"]
Bonus Tips On Overcoming Challenges & Removing Obstacles:

Try driving to the event location if flying there is too expensive for you.

Rank #12: FL 192 – How to become LUCKY

Podcast cover
Read more
New Car: Do I seriously look like I was bought with LUCK money? I was bought with their hard earned money y'all!
This week, we’re going to talk about being LUCKY and our take on the entire concept of LUCK.
You probably know this already, but we are not a huge fan of the word, “LUCK.”

“Oh! Your business took off? You’re SOOO LUCKY!!!”

“WOW! You must be so lucky to be able to buy a new car on a whim!”

(buzzer sound)

WRONG.
Luck had very little to do with what we’ve achieved in life.
To put it simply, we worked very hard to place ourselves in front of those rare opportunities.

But we didn’t get to where we are now because our first attempt worked.

People think that you need to succeed the first time you try when in reality, it will take you multiple attempts before you get enough experience to get to the next step.

It’s the same with us, guys!

We had to learn the ropes.

We had to put in the time and money.

We had to stay focused and do whatever it took to make it online, not just for our sake but for our family’s future.

It’s funny how success is often perceived to rely on luck.

Luck isn’t bad, y’all!

But using it as an excuse to justify your inaction is.

“Oh, I’m not lucky like they are, how can I possibly succeed?”

See what we mean?

So, if you’re looking around for ways on how to be lucky or how to increase your luck, you’re not going to make it far.

Think about the “Law of Attraction.”

The more you focus and take action on the things you want to happen, the more you attract opportunities and situations that will make you reach that goal.

Anyone can succeed, it’s just not everyone is willing to do what needs to be done in order to succeed.

So, tell us, how will you attract success if you’re not doing anything?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again (and again and AGAIN)...

ACTION BREEDS SUCCESS.

Stop wasting your precious time searching for blog posts on HOW TO BE LUCKY IN LIFE!

Don’t let the concept of luck hold you back from creating the life that you want your family to have.

YOU are responsible for your success.

Not luck.

Not anyone else.

JUST YOU!

You might not know it or believe it, but you have as much potential to succeed as everyone else.

So, work towards your goal, build and foster relationships, do whatever it takes to change your life.

Be like Cortez and TAKE ACTION!

In today's episode, we help Kahkshan choose a direction for her online business.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all, on today's podcast we help Kahkshan choose a direction for her online business.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. It is great to be back with you again, today. We are super excited to welcome another member of the Flip Your Life community on to the show, and we're talking to someone literally on the other side of the planet today. So let's welcome Kahkshan Ali from Saudi Arabia. How you doin'?

Kahkshan Ali: Fine, thanks. Great to be here. Thanks so much, Shane, Jocelyn.

Shane Sams: We worked about 30 minutes on pronouncing your name. Even though, we've talked forever. You're so good to me when we talk on coaching calls, 'cause you just let me butcher your name 'cause I'm from Kentucky and I can't speak.

Kahkshan Ali: Yeah, no, it's fine. You guys actually said it very well, so thank you, I appreciate that.

Jocelyn Sams: Okay, awesome! We love talking to people in our international community. We have people from all over the world, and we love to travel, we love other cultures. We're fascinated by them, so we just love talking to you every single time, and we can't wait to dive in here with you today.

Kahkshan Ali: Great! Me too.

Jocelyn Sams: All right, let's jump in and talk a little bit about you. Tell us about you, your background, and what you're doing so far online.

Kahkshan Ali: Okay. Well, I'm actually a dentist, and I was really interested in doing something online for a couple of reasons. I know there's a lot of information available on the internet, but I felt that trying to come up with a course for moms and parents with young kids. Having something all in one place with some fun videos and some things that are a little bit more interactive. I wanted to try and do something like that just to be able to educate and help people, because I get questions anytime I go to like a dinner party, "Oh, you're a dentist. Oh, do you mind?" So it's like, "Okay."

Kahkshan Ali: So I thought it'd be nice to maybe try and provide some valuable information online. Which, is where everyone is going nowadays.

Shane Sams: So this is basically, this is a career offshoot type path that you've started with. So there's multiple paths that people start with online business. Some people, they go really into the passion. Some people, they go really into the hobby. Some people, they go into entertainment, but a lot of people, this is how we started out, we looked at our work. 'Cause it was where we knew the most information about a topic, period, when we started. I was a football coach. Jocelyn was a librarian. It was just a natural way to say, "Hey, I know this. I'm trained in this. I can create content fast, and I can try this out."

Shane Sams: Probably in the dentist office, just like it is when we go anywhere in a business setting, when people find out what you do they think that you have all the answers. Then they always ask you the same questions. I would guess you were getting the same questions from every parent and every kid, and you're like, "Man, I could totally make a course about this, and tell everybody what to do with their kids and their dental hygiene", right?

Kahkshan Ali: Right, exactly. Yeah, the same thing. I thought to start off it would be easier and, as you said, faster. Just because this is my field of expertise. I've been a dentist for 25 years now. So I thought this would be a good place to start, and then could move on after I did this to see what else I can maybe try.

Rank #14: FL 183 – How Sandra made over $700 a month in passive income while raising a newborn and fighting breast cancer

“At the end of the day, it’s not even about, ‘What’s your superpower?’ but what’s really your passion.” - Sandra Chen

Here’s the deal:

Life can (and will) throw curveballs in our general direction when we least expect it.

Things that are beyond our control, things that hurt and things that make us feel disconnected from everything else.

And as if that’s not enough, this often happens when we’re already pretty overwhelmed.

Nevertheless, we don’t stop there…

NO, we endure the challenges with everything we’ve got.
WHY?
Because we have the capability to persevere, to look for and find hope, to choose courage, to find peace in our faith -- to emerge victorious in our darkest hours.

By now, y’all have probably noticed that we’re going off our usual style here, and we’re very happy that you did, because that means you’re paying attention, and you’ll be glad you did.

You see, we’ve already recorded more than 180 podcast episodes. We’ve heard some really exceptional men and women share their finest hours, as well as recount some of their biggest trials, but none quite as inspiring as our guest, Sandra, has today.

Sandra's story has moved and touched us so much that we laughed, ached and cried while recording.

We learned so much from her today and you will too, it's going to get super interesting and super inspiring real quick.
Here’s her story...
Sandra is a 34 years old Singaporean, who studied her music degree in the United Kingdom, married a Malaysian and lived in his home country for 5 years, and has always worked as a school music teacher.

She struggled to conceive a child for many, many years. They've tried different fertility treatments, but was unsuccessful.

Unfazed, she decided to dedicate her time and talent as a Worship Keyboardist to create something that would help and bless others.

She searched for ways to do so, and later found out about the online business scene (because Sandra just ain’t the kind to idly sit by and do nothing).

She listened to several podcasts, dived deep into all the free content she could find, later joined the Flip Your Life community, and started building what she now calls, “The Inspired Keys Academy.”

She poured thousands of hours of hard work, creating content and leading her community, things were going great, she has been quite successful with her eBook sales as well.

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any better...

She and her husband moved to Australia.

New country. New house. New climate. Not to mention, their furniture hasn’t even arrived yet, and then...

PREGNANT.

Sandra became pregnant despite all the new changes in her life!

Can you believe just how miraculous that is?

But now that she’s expecting, she lost all interest in online business and kinda let it slide to the back burner, that doesn’t mean she’s lost her entrepreneurial spirit though. She was able to set up her own piano studio at home, where she teaches kids one-on-one, and months later had given birth to a healthy baby boy.

Okay. Now, let’s try that again…

New country. New house. New climate. YAY! Pregnant. New piano studio at home. OH MY GOSH! Just gave birth.
It doesn’t stop there...
10 days after childbirth, Sandra got diagnosed with breast cancer.

Let that sink in for a moment, that’s the curveball right there.

Like anybody receiving this kind of news, she broke down and cried.

Factor in post pregnancy hormones and you’re in for the craziest emotional roller coaster ride ever.

But here’s the thing that cancer didn’t know, Sandra is probably the closest thing you have to Wonder Woman.

With a “Never Give Up” attitude and her strong faith in God, Sandra was able to brush the dust off her shoulders and started counting her blessings.

Remember that online business she put on the back burner? Well, it continued to earn her an average of 700 AUD a month. It was automated, so she wasn’t even doing anything,

Getting started with your online business can be overwhelming for a number of reasons.
Do you find yourself creating your content, but unable to finish because of endless revising and refining?

Do things always get in the way of your time to work on your online business, even if you set a schedule for it?

Of course, we want our digital products to be good, or perfect if possible… but how perfect is perfect enough to stop and do the next step?

How long will that take?

Scheduling time to work on your online business is to be expected, but why doesn't it always work?

These are just some of the reasons we feel stuck in our online business, and it can be very frustrating.

Well, hold your horses, y’all, because in this week’s episode we will help our guest tackle and overcome these issues to help him start and grow his online business.

We're sure you’ll learn a lot in our brainstorm and it's going to help you take your own online business to the next level too!

Our guest today is Dan Franz.

Dan is a general practitioner in Psychology and does mental health counseling. His wife is a teacher, and they have two children.

Dan did a group practice for 5 to 6 years working with and supervising other therapists, but recently switched back to doing his own one-on-one practice after the technicalities of having a larger practice deemed quite taxing.

Since the beginning of his mental health counseling, he started writing-related blogs to give him an online presence with the goal of leading people to his one-on-one practice.

This got him to acquire a list of about 800 people from his online writing, how awesome is that?!

And now, with his growing desire to help and reach more people, as well as have more time to spend with his family, Dan went on to take his business online (with an advantage of already having an existing following from his online presence).

With the majority of his digital product outline already done, he struggles with its completion due to constant revising and refining.

His work time for his online business also seems to get interrupted a lot, causing a delay in his progress.

But hey! Everyone needs a little help to get back in the right direction and get to that next step... sometimes even counselors need guidance. :)

So, join us as we help Dan overcome these setbacks -- dealing with the overwhelm, prioritization, having the right mindset -- as well as discussing strategies and direction on creating and selling his digital product.

Rank #16: FL Special: The 6 Phases of Successful Membership

Podcast cover
Read more
Want insight on running a successful online membership business?
Then this week's episode is a must hear for you.

We’re going to share the 6 Phases of a Successful Membership with YOU, dear listeners and fans.

Recently, Jocelyn and I had our Flipped Lifestyle leadership excursion / vacation, where we took the time to talk about the future, reflect on the things we’ve learned this year, and enjoy some downtime to really unwind.

We wanted to give you more insight on how to start and grow a successful membership community, so we summarized key points about the phases that make up the membership cycle.

Happy listening and we wish y’all a very Merry Christmas!
6 Phases of a successful membership
Phase One: Discovery
Where people learn you exist -- cold traffic.

Your audience can discover you through your podcasts, blog post, social media presence, marketing ad campaigns, etc.

This is also where you start implementing your marketing plan to get yourself in front of as many people in your niche as possible.
Phase Two: Learning
Teach people what you’re all about.

The sales process of teaching them about what you offer, so that they will join your membership.

Let people get to know you, your brand and what you have to offer.

You can do this in a variety of ways, like creating a really strong “About Me” page. You can also do LIVE videos, just find ways to let people into your world and show them what makes you different from other people who may be offering the same product or service that you’re offering.

Help the people who have discovered you through the marketing plan, learn more about you and your brand, and sell them into your membership.
Phase Three: Onboarding
Getting people to join you as fast as possible by leading them to their first solution.

Make sure that something is in place to welcome members who have just joined in your membership. Let them know that joining in was the right decision.

What we do is we have a “Thank You Page” with a video that shows people how to find their login credentials and how to login to the community.

The only page your paying customer is guaranteed to see is your “Thank You Page.” If you rely on your customer receiving their email and opening them, but there just happens to be a glitch in the system, then they won’t be able to get inside your community.

So, give strong instructions and provide ways to get them immediate support in case they encounter any problems.

“If they don’t get access to what they’ve purchased, people will quit.” - Shane

Reach out to your people, especially the ones who haven’t been logging in and let them know you’re ready to serve them.
Phase Four: Assimilation
Let them know how your community culture works.

If you don’t assimilate your new members into your community, they are more likely to quit. So make sure you communicate with your people, don’t leave them in the dark.

Guide your members to their next course of action, be there for them and make them feel connected with your tribe.
Phase Five: Participation
This is where everybody becomes a family. They all hangout, getting into their routines and habits. This is also where the user starts leading themselves, taking accountability and helping other members.

Instead of being just your tribe’s leader, the setting changes into more of a “round table,” where everybody is in this together -- unified under an ultimate purpose.

You learn more about your members, the membership takes on a life of its own and it becomes a lot easier to manage, because your people have become more independent.
Phase Six: Exit
It is inevitable that most members will leave at some point for different reasons.

In today's episode, we help Brian figure out if his business idea will make money online.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn: Hey y'all, on today's podcast we help Brian figure out if his business idea will make money online.

Shane: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane: What's going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again today. Super excited to talk to another member of the Flip Your Life community. You'll have to bear with us. Jocelyn and I are just getting back from a conference, and both of our voices are a little shot. We're still a little jet lagged, but that's not going to hold us back from helping today's Flip Your Life community member, Brian Kelley. Brian, we're tired, but welcome to the show.

Brian: Thank you. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.

Shane: And Brian's on the road too. He's on the road too.

Brian: I absolutely am, yup.

Shane: He's in Chicago at a conference, so he might be a little tired too. We're going to go through this now. We're going to fight through it together. How's that?

Brian: That sounds great.

Jocelyn: We're excited to talk to you today, Brian. You are coming to our event, which is coming up very, very soon so that is super exciting. And I know that you have been taking a lot of action lately which is how you got on the show today, so congratulations for that. And we can't wait to hear a little bit more about it, but before we get there let's hear about you and your background.

Brian: All right. I work in restaurants. I've been in the restaurant industry for about 25 years, and I actually love it. I love my job. I'm married with two kids, and the issue I tend to run into is that I'm concerned about our financial future. I like what I do, but both of our kids have special needs, and it requires extra planning for the future. I don't think that there's a way for me to get my family where we ultimately need to be at retirement with just our incomes. So I'm looking to supplement it with something online.

Brian: And then the other reason that I've been pursuing it is just because I think it's a lot of fun. I've listened to your Podcast for a long time now, and I've actually been a member for a year. Everything that I learn that's new and sitting down and actually creating a website and stuff is really intriguing to me. I find it exciting, and I like it, so that's kind of why I chose this path. I'm just looking for any bit of success at this point. I think I've done a lot of the base level stuff. I'm up and rolling, and I'm just trying to get that first dollar made.

Shane: Dude, I get it, man. I sat there for months and months waiting for any amount of money to flow into my pocket. And what's crazy is we ask our guests on the show, we look for people in the forums who are taking action, filling out success stories, helping other people, and you have just had this flurry of activity. You've been taking all the courses, talking in the forums, coming to the live event in September, and all of this stuff lately. And that's kind of how we were like, "Whoa, what is this guy doing? He is doing everything. We've got to get him on the show, we've got to help him because we really want to reward action takers in the community." What caused this flurry of activity. You said you've been in the community for a year now. What's happened lately or changed or how'd you [inaudible 00:03:42] to get moving forward in your business?

Brian: It was two things. It was, one, probably first and foremost, a new idea for a website. And secondly was I just got really angry that I hadn't finished my last idea, that I hadn't succeeded with it.

Success Story of the Week:
This week's success story comes from Veronica Lopez, who has been on the podcast before.  She writes in the success story forum, "I have a huge success story.  My automated webinars are working.”
Veronica says, "In January, I posted a rant/rave encouraging everyone to dive into webinars.  I recently had a chance to speak to Shane and Jocelyn in a podcast episode, and my action step was related to diving into automated webinars.  I jumped in with Easy Webinar on Monday evening.  The platform is pretty easy, it took me a day to play around with the system, re-record my webinar and set up a Facebook ad to send people to register for it.  The first automated webinar ran last night, and another one ran tonight.  I had six attendees and two sales from the training. I had another sale just from the ad.  That's three sales on a $187 course. Basically, the software and the ad is now paid for, and the rest will be profit. If you have a webinar that is working, don't delay.  Get the automated set-up pronto.

Rank #19: FL 184 – Our TOP 7 Time management tips that actually work for busy entrepreneurs

Podcast cover
Read more
A couple of weeks ago on the podcast, we had a big discussion about time management and how important it was to kind of shift your mindset away from, "I don't have time," to, "I will find the time and I'm going to do whatever it takes to be successful."

We're going to revisit that topic today and learn even more time management strategies.

It gets much more practical with our 7 best time management tips.

These are the time management tips that helped us build and grow a successful online business, allowed us to quit our jobs, and gave us the freedom that we have now to spend more time with each other and with our kids.

In our experience, it doesn't matter where you are in your online business journey, everyone needs time management help.

We all have the exact same amount of time, and almost everyone we know struggles at some point with time management.

How you're managing your time is something you've got to reevaluate every now and then.

One of the things that led to this series on time management in our podcast is because Jocelyn and I had kind of gotten off the path a little bit.

We stopped using our calendar quite as much.

We weren't getting into our normal routines.

Things were getting a little hectic with the kids in school, and life just tends to knock you off of your time management plan and it's really up to you to go redirect your course.

You've got to get back on the path and ask, "What are the fundamentals?  What are the basics?  What are the practical things that I can actually do to manage my time and make sure I'm getting everything done?"

That's what we're going to talk about today.
Tip #1: Stop letting other people kill your time.
Set boundaries to protect your time from distractions and disruptions.

We all have a set amount of time every day, so we have to be careful of who and what we spend our time on.

Here are some of the things we did (that you can TOTALLY do too!) to take control of our time:
Cancel voicemail
Checking your voicemail a few minutes a day distracts you from more productive activities.

Sure, you’d say, “But it’s only a few minutes!” or “I really need to know who left that message.”

Ask yourself...

Do I really NEED to check these voice messages?

Why do I need this when there are better ways to communicate?

Always find ways to do things and invest time better.

Listening to voicemail is definitely not one of them.
Take control of your inbox
The people in your inbox should be helping you make progress in your life.

Get rid of emails that are constantly vying for your time that aren’t important, or aren’t giving you the answers / resources you need to move forward.

Unsubscribe. Delete. Empty your inbox.

Do what you’ve got to do to get started on the right track.

Worried about emergencies and urgent emails?

If that’s even the case, the people / company that sent that to you will stay in touch to get that message across.

If you think you’ll clean that up later… chances are you wont.

So, do it now and do it fast.
Shut off unnecessary phone notifications
Your time is valuable.

We know this.

YOU KNOW THIS.

So, why aren’t you doing anything to eliminate time wasters?

You don’t need to be on your phone for every single notification that makes that sweet buzzing sound (or whatever sound it’s supposed to make).

Will knowing someone liked your photo make you money? NO.

Will a game alert on Facebook grow your business? NO.

So stop getting distracted with things that aren’t making you successful.

Invest your time and effort only on things that create abundance, freedom and success for you and your family.
Get caller ID to filter important calls from unimportant calls
Getting caller ID helps you identify calls you absolutely must take, from those you can call back later or even those you can ignore all together.

Word to the wise,

In today's episode, we help Laura get new members and also retain current members in her education business.

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Jocelyn: Hey, y'all. In today's podcast, we help Laura take her online education business to the next level.

Shane: Welcome to the Flip Lifestyle Podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sam. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online, and now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane: What's going on everybody, welcome back to the Flip Lifestyle Podcast, it is great to be back with you again. Today, super excited to be with another member of the Flip Your Life community. This is a great episode, because this is a success story episode. This is a story with someone who has flipped their life. We're talking to Flip Your Life member Laura Keybart today. Hey, Laura, welcome to the program.

Laura: Hey, thanks for having me, today.

Jocelyn: Yes, we are so excited to talk to you, especially with this awesome success story. We look for cool success stories to find people to be on the podcast. This one was one we did not want to miss, for sure. So before we jump into all that, we want to know a little bit about you, your family, and what you're doing online.

Laura: Okay, sure. So I have a wonderful, supportive husband who has been behind me every step of the way that I've been going through this journey. I'm a step mom, I love dogs, I'm a distance runner, always running marathons, training for something. I've always got something on the calendar. We love traveling, we love planning vacations and different experiences around running events like those. So while I run while he watches football or visits a history museum.

Shane: Me and your husband would get along, dude. Like, if he's watching football, I just went to Philadelphia, and I hit like five history museums. He should have went with me, I'm just saying. He should have went with me.

Laura: Yeah, yeah. Well, when I ran the Washington DC, the Marine Corp marathon, he was hitting the museums and visiting those places. So yeah, it works out.

Jocelyn: Cool, cool.

Laura: So I just completed my 18th year in education as a teacher. I taught english/language arts, which is reading and writing for, oh gosh, 15, 16 years, grade 6th through 12. The past couple of years, I was an instructional coach working with teachers at a local school district. Most of that was great, I love teaching and working with kids and teachers. But, it's kind of the same thing that we all experience. We become fed up with terrible bosses, all the crazy workplace drama, mind numbing, ridiculous meetings and committees that go nowhere, and you start just kind of looking around.

Laura: What else could I do? I went through that. Is there something remote I could do? Something online I could do? Maybe I could teach myself how to code and build websites? Which, that was a joke, I tried that for a month. That's not me. But what could I do so that I have a purpose, I can serve people, but I can also bring in an income that I can live on? What options are there? So I started listening to podcasts around setting goals, and working remotely, maybe even working for yourself. I would listen to all of these podcasts while I was doing my long training runs. That's about the time I stumbled upon your podcast, it was maybe around episode, I don't know, 40 or 50 or so, starting binge listening. I thought, okay, that makes sense. This whole thing makes sense now. I think maybe I could do that. Maybe one day, I can quit my job. That sounds crazy, but so was running 22.6 miles. That's ridiculous too.

Shane: That is totally ridiculous. That is way more ridiculous than quitting your job, I'm telling you.

Laura: So anyway, so that day has finally come. My husband had been on me for months to just do it, just quit, we'll be fine.
