Rank #1: What to do with Unmet Expectations with Maggie Combs | Ep. 35

Podcast cover
Read more

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I chatted with Maggie Combs about the deep desires of our hearts that cause real grief when they remain unfulfilled. Maggie is the author of UnsuperMommy and mama to her three busy boys: Isaac, Zander, and Judah. She blames their unending energy and solid build completely on her tall, active husband, Wes. Maggie and I talked about everything from why God allows some of our desires to go unmet to where the Gospel meets us in those unmet expectations. She said,

“Only in nearness to God will we have all of our desire fulfilled. I like to call this holy discontent. This means that the purpose of this unmet desire is to constantly remind you that only God will satisfy the unending desire of your heart. Elizabeth Elliot says, ‘Heaven is not here, it’s there. If we were given all that we wanted here our hearts would settle for this world and not the next.’ So this holy discontentment is a kindness to keep us longing for more of God.”

Maggie literally had me saying, “Amen,” throughout the podcast which thankfully, doesn’t happen often, but I know you guys will be fist pumping with me as she gracefully and powerfully brings the truth on this episode. I hope ya’ll enjoy it as much as I did!

Rank #3: Anxiety and Depression with Christine Gordon and Hope Blanton | Ep. 95

Podcast cover
Read more

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, we’re talking about anxiety and depression. I asked my friends Hope Blanton and Christine Gordon to join me because Hope is a trained counselor and Christine has formal theological training. Together, they write At His Feet Bible studies, which I cannot recommend highly enough, and all that said, you might be surprised to learn that both of them actually have and still wrestle with either anxiety or depression.

Hope A. Blanton is wife to Ray and mother of three. She earned her master's in clinical social work at Temple University. Currently she works as a counselor in San Antonio. She loves good food, making people laugh, and being outside. And Christine B. Gordon, MATS, is wife to Michael and mother of three. She earned her Master of Arts in Theological Studies at Covenant Seminary. She currently lives in St. Louis where she works as the intake coordinator for a counseling center. She loves to walk, make music with other people, and share bad puns with her family.

On this episode of the Journeywomen podcast I had the privilege of chatting with my friend and former mentor, Matt Lantz on the theology of identity. Matt is a husband, father, and pastor who lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife and three children. He’s a graduate of TCU and Dallas Theological Seminary and has been working in full-time ministry since 2000 preparing the way for the Lord Jesus in the lives of men and women. Matt was the founding director of a discipleship program called the Forge at Pine Cove where he spent 12 years helping young men and women learn their identity and steward it well. He has recently moved on from the Forge and is now serving as the Recruitment and Development Pastor at Christ Chapel Bible Church in Fort Worth. This conversation reminded me of the things I learned during my time in the Forge program about identity and how we live out our God-given design.

Rank #6: Relating to Your Emotions with Amy Waters | Ep. 06

Podcast cover
Read more

On this episode of the Journeywomen podcast I’m interviewing Amy Waters, a Licensed Professional Counselor, Women’s Bible Study leader, disciple maker, and self-proclaimed theology junkie. Amy spent nearly 10 years on staff at Pine Cove as a Conference Director and it was there that God gave her a passion for ministering to women and families. She earned a Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2011 and is currently counseling at the Alethia Counseling Center in Tyler, TX.

Amy and I are discussing how we as women can relate to our emotions. I’ve been planning this interview since the idea for the Journeywomen podcast was born many months ago. To be honest, I felt really awkward coming off of this recording, but I listened to Amy and I’s conversation while editing I realized that my own discomfort stemmed from the fact that I personally struggle to relate to my emotions. Brooks and I live in a culture where emotion isn’t admonished and I think I’m a little out of touch with my emotions these days. My chat with Amy was enlightening, helpful, and challenging. I hope it’s as helpful for you as it was for me!

Rank #7: Fear with Matt Lantz | Ep. 46

Podcast cover
Read more

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I brought back one of your all-time favorite guests, Matt Lantz! We talked about fear and what happens when our fear is misplaced. I talked about my own wrestle with fear of man and per usual, Matt blew my mind, like when he said,

“I’m reminded when I am afraid of something that I am not God. I don’t command anything. And I’m mortal. I can die, I can be hurt. I think God gave us the emotion of fear because he’s the only one worthy of it.”

Matt also shares how we can help one another out as friends by reminding one another of the only One who is worthy of our fear. We fear Him because He is good, He commands things, and that He is commanding things for our good, and that He can even do that at our request.

So you’ll know him a little better, Matt is a husband, father, and pastor who lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife and three children. He has recently moved on from the Forge and is now serving as the Recruitment and Development Pastor and the Associate Pastor of the West Campus at Christ Chapel Bible Church in Fort Worth, TX.

Coffee, peanut butter, and chocolate are some of her food "happies", and she is always finding a way to sneak them into her day. Rank #11: Humility with Hannah Anderson | Ep. 69

Podcast cover
Read more

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Hannah Anderson on the topic of humility. We talked about everything from what humility is to how Jesus embodied humility here on this earth.

Here is a quote from her book, Humble Roots, “Before we can even begin to answer our call to come to him, Jesus comes to us. Because we could never sufficiently humble ourselves, Jesus humbles himself, and by doing so, he became both the model and the means of our own humility. Through his life, death, and resurrection, Jesus shows us our true identity as people dependent on God for life. And through his life, death, and resurrection, he imparts this humble life to us once again.”

Hannah and I flesh this out in a real practical way in today’s conversation. So you’ll know her a little better, Hannah lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where she spends her days working with her husband in rural ministry, writing, and caring for their family. As a writer and co-host of the weekly podcast, Persuasion, she enjoys exploring how the gospel informs and transforms how we think about current events and popular trends. Her books Made for More and Humble Roots unpack the question of  our identity and purpose as women destined to reflect God's glory to the world around us. She also has a new book coming out on October 2 called All That’s Good: Recovering the Lost Art of Discernment.

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Lauren Weir on the topic of asking intentional questions. Y’all know that question-asking is one of my favorite topics, and let me be the first to say that Lauren absolutely knocked it out of the park. We talked about everything from how we can ask intentional questions in our study of the Word to how we can use intentional questions to know and love one another better.

I really believe this conversation will help you in your endeavor to know and love others with the hope of loving them, enjoying them, and leading them to Jesus. So you’ll know her a little better, Lauren is a wife and mother and lover of Jesus with a heart that beats to communicate the goodness and glory of God. She is the owner of Words Worth Noting, a ministry dedicated to providing resources and cultivating life through the beauty of Scripture. Podcast cover
Read more

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I had the true joy of chatting with Abigail Dodds, someone I’ve admired from afar as I’ve read her articles for Desiring God and followed along with her life via Instagram. Abigail is married to Tom and mom of five kiddos ranging from age 14 to 4. She’s a part-time writer, part-time Bible study teacher, part-time homeschool teacher, part-time baker, gardener, and knitter. But she would tell you she’s a full-time Christian, a full-time wife and mom, full-time member her church, and full-time friend and sister in Christ. She’s also soon to be a student again, as she’s starting this fall at Bethlehem College and Seminary getting her Masters in exegesis and theology.

Today we chatted about REST! Something that we, as believers, have already been given, but too often fail to actually rest IN. Here’s one of my favorite quotes, “Knowing Jesus means we get to know the Father. In knowing Jesus, we know rest.” Hearing Abigail, a busy mom of FIVE kiddos, communicate the true rest we have in the Gospel encouraged me deeply, especially in this busy season with little people. I can’t wait to share it with ya’ll!

Rank #20: Idols of the Heart with Emily Jensen | Ep. 30

Podcast cover
Read more

On this episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I chatted with Emily Jensen about idols of the heart. We discuss everything from our personal struggles with idolatry to practical ways we can move forward in repentance after seeing our sin. If you know Emily, it goes without saying that we talked about resting in the grace of the Gospel. She said, “It’s always important to remember with idolatry like, this isn’t something that we do on our own. This is something God did on our behalf. That causes us to just be humble and grateful and in awe of God. That’s a key thing. When we are in awe of God and when we are grateful for what he has done, it makes us want to worship Him more and it helps us deal with our idol problem.”

Talking with Emily opened up my eyes to see that while there are lots of little idols I’ve conjured up, they all revolve around ME! My biggest problem really is myself. Understanding that I genuinely am struggling with making much of myself more than anything else has humbled me in the best of ways, providing a sweet opportunity to preach the Gospel to myself and to those around me.

I am continually learning about how the Gospel infiltrates every area of my life and God has really used Emily and her sister-in-law, Laura, to help me flesh that out practically as I listen to their podcast, Risen Motherhood. Emily has been married for eight years, is a mother to five young children, and has a passion for sharing gospel-centered truth with women. I am so grateful we have the opportunity to hear from her today on the topic of idolatry.
