Rank #2: How does access to basic services impact personal success?

Podcast cover
Read more
The ABC's Australia Talks National Survey discovered that 69 per cent of us believe that, in Australia if you work hard, you can be successful, no matter what circumstances you were born into.

The logic is that Australia is a developed country with solid public education and health systems that should offer everyone a baseline of opportunity, and let talent and hard work shine through.

So, how true is this baseline idea? And how hard is it to raise yourself up if you were born with fewer opportunities than others?

The ABC's Australia Talks National Survey has had more than 54,000 participants, answering questions related to faith, housing, mental health, employment and general outlook on life.

69 per cent of respondents agreed that it is possible to be successful in Australia if you work hard, no matter the circumstances you were born into, but is that always the case?

ABC Radio Hobart's Leon Compton and Life Matters' Hilary Harper and Michael Mackenzie host a debate featuring Tasmanians from different backgrounds to discuss that question from their live broadcast in Hobart, Tasmania.

Whether it's the local bakery passing out bread, or the pub opening up as a place of respite, plenty of people have been quick to lend a helping hand.

Life Matters checks in on a few teams of people going over and above to help their community.

Hospital design is changing, and it's changing for the better.

New ideas around patient experience are leading to faster recovery times and big savings in long-term recovery and rehabilitation.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital is a case in point, where stroke recovery patients are on their feet 24 hours after admission and walking around a specially designed 'racetrack' with natural light, timber flooring, and an integrated gym.

Michael Mackenzie investigates.

Rank #9: Richard Harris on his against-the-odds Thai cave rescue mission

Podcast cover
Read more
Richard “Harry” Harris's father took him out in a boat once when he was a child and he then began diving as a teenager. These experiences inspired a passion for the underwater world that would one day take Richard to the deep, dark innards of a cave in Thailand.
Richard Harris was one of the Australian cave divers who helped rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave system. And his experience, not only as a cave diver, but also as an anaesthetist, made him ideally suited for the mission.
He tells Life Matters about what it was like when he was administering aesthetic to the soccer team and then swimming through those long, dark tunnels, not knowing if any of those boys would make it out alive.
