Today’s guest is Doctor Dan Siegel. Dan is a clinical professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA school of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Centre at UCLA. He is also the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute which focuses on the development of Mindsight, teaches insight, empathy and integration in individuals, families and communities. Dr. Siegel has published extensively for the professional and lay audiences. We are discussing his new book: Aware: The Science and Practice of Presence. Join us!

"The most important gift we can give our kids is showing up with our mental presence, not just physically being present but to have the state of awareness and open to who they actually are."

"Presence is a state of perceptive awareness."

"Information is transformation."

"You have the ability to cultivate the presence of mind through these very simple and accessible practices that are going to bring health to your body, slow the aging process, reduce stress, all these positive things and the same exact process, developing your hub of your wheel of awareness, presence, can actually deeply enrich the way your child is soaking in his or her relationship with you and developing this experience of being seen, of being soothed, of being safe, of being secure that research shows is exactly what your child needs to optimize how they go out into life, and that's something you're empowered to create."

What you’ll hear in this episode:

-The wheel of awareness - what it is and how it helps

-How awareness impacts your body and health

-How being present impacts the speed of the aging process

-Wellbeing and how it is enhanced by being present

-Relationships with your kids and how being present improves it

-Cultivating awareness

-Role modelling resilience

-How awareness feeds connection vs control

-Impacts of a lack of structure on the brain and future of children

-Authoritative parenting vs Authoritarian parenting

-Why we need the village and how that creates stress for contemporary parents

-Finding joy, tranquility and connection through expanding awareness

-Flipping our lid, learning from our body's signals and how awareness can help

-Monitoring and modifying for self-regulation and to improve responses to stress

-The 3 O's what they mean

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Joyful Courage, to me, means having the presence of mind to dive into this receptive state of awareness, this hub of the wheel, to tap into the power of being connected with whatever arises inside of you, this kind of "bring it on" attitude, that's the courage. And the joy that arises as you liberate yourself from what a lot of us get imprisoned by which is "I have to control everything" instead, with presence, you let things emerge within you and then you let integration, connecting with your child, for example, in ways that are filled with love and connection that is honoring who your child is, honoring yourself too, but then linking together with compassionate, close relationships. That's what I think joyful courage and courageous joy is all about.

Content:

  • The Yes Brain is available NOW
  • Tina is a mama to 17, 14, and 11 year boys
  • Yes brain and no brain approaches
    • A “yes brain” is a mindset of saying yes to the world, open – neurological state, our brain is integrated and linked up… Over time it becomes hardwired
    • A “no brain” is fearful, reactive
  • Prompted by “what are the skills my child needs to be successful?” – Tina and Dan Siegel wanted to go beyond academics and gold stars
    • They need an integrated brain that has a strong/functioning prefrontal cortex
  • Yes Brain has 4 Components:
    • Balance
    • Resilience
    • Insight
    • Empathy
  • Developmental brain/age/temperament matters
  • Tina shares a story about her own son who seemed to be lacking empathy at a young age

    • Survive emotional dysregulation

Parenting from within takes practice practice practice. What are the significant tools we need to really delve within? Inside of us exists what we need to connect to the way we want to parent.  Using these tools at our disposal will allow us to open up, connect, reset and navigate the challenges that come with development. Just like we are in constant practice it’s key to continue the conversation! Our children are not the only humans in development.

 What you will hear

  • The emotional journey of choosing Positive Parenting
  • Is your inner voice helping or hindering your practice
  • Our old stories can create blocks when we practice PD
  • What shows up when our children touch on those old stories (triggers)
  • How we talk to ourselves when it seems everyone around us has it together
  • Where do we chose to sit when we are in anger, resentment and “stuckness”
  • Why are you choosing PD and/or Conscious Parenting?
  • What are the themes that drive us to want to parent this way?
  • What themes to we use to keep us on a pendulum
  • Once we choose into the practice we can create habits that navigate through these themes and stories
  • Awareness is the first step to helping us acknowledge the triggers so we can create a connection into this parenting journey
  • This is a collective journey
  • Mindfulness with ground us into the practice and what we need
  • Using mindfulness will bring you into your biggest tool- your body, senses, feelings and emotions
  • Listening to your body is accepting the messages and signals you are sending to your conscious
  • What do you notice in challenging situations?
  • Where do your signals sit? Belly? Shoulders? Chest?
  • Follow the wisdom your body is sending.
  • Fears cloud our vision and takes us into the “what ifs”
  • Getting curious allows us to approach our children without getting stuck in the fog
  • How to use the neutrality of your body to shift into a better experience
  • Shifting can open us up the possibility that we are the best parent for our kids and we can make repairs

Rank #4: Eps 191: Back to the Basics of Positive Discipline

Podcast cover

::::

Hey friends!

Can’t believe that it is nearly halfway through June!

-       Book launch – IG Giveaway

-       JCA Teens program

-       NASAP and TP

-       Looking ahead at the summer

-       Planning for next fall

o   More JCA Teens

o   Possible JCA Tweens/Preteens

o   Live workshops/classes

Today I want to get back to basics.

I am a Positive Discipline Trainer. My recent time in Tucson at NASAP and co-facilitating the TP has brought me back to the building blocks of positive discipline…. I am also finding myself on exploratory calls with new clients who are eager to do one on one work and looking for resources to share what the philosophy of PD is all about, with the Joyful Courage spin, or course.

So, I decided I would do a show about it. I am excited to share, and if you are someone who feels like you know all about PD, I invite you to listen from a place of curiosity and wonder – to catch yourself when you think “I know all of this” and shift into “what is here for me to learn?”

Because that is one of my favorite things about this work – there are so many layers. Right when I think “oh yeah, NOW I get it” life throws me something new, or my kids step into a new place of development, or I just simply find myself back in my old ways of thinking (because it is so darn familiar) and I realize, yet again, that there is more to learn….

Excited? Me too.

A lot of people hear the words, Positive Discipline and assume that it is all about being nice while we dole out consequences to our kids. Or they get really stuck on the word “positive “ and think it is all about being permissive and letting our kids run the show. Some people mistakenly believe that PD parents don’t ever want their kids to feel bad, and perhaps lump PD with helicoptering, coddling or enabling our kids.

This is totally NOT what PD is all about. To start, one thing I really appreciate about Positive Discipline is that it is a program that has it’s roots in Adlerian Psychology. Alfred Adler was one of the first social psychologists. He worked with individuals and families and found, time and time again, that human behavior was motivated by a sense of belonging and significance. He found that we are always moving towards, or moving from, our sense of connection and knowing that we matter.  And when behavior starts to look like mischief, it can be linked back to the individuals perception of belonging and significance. Jane Nelsen, the author and co-author of the library of Positive Discipline books, talks about belonging and significance as our longing for love and responsibility.

-       Kind and firm

-       Belonging and significance

-       Mutual respect/dignity for all

-       Encouragement

-       Social interest

-       Take time for training

-       The courage to be imperfect/mistakes as opportunities to learn

-       We always have a choice

Rank #5: Eps 136: Kelly Bos talks about how NOT to become your child's inner critic

Podcast cover

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

:::::

Today’s guest is Kelly Flannigan Bos, MSW. Kelly is a clinical therapist focusing on individual, marriage, and family relationships. She helps people find meaning and joy in their relationships - with themselves and others. As a well-known relationship expert, she has appeared in a professional capacity in countless media markets as a guest and writer. Today we are discussing an article she wrote in November called, “I don’t want to write the script for my child’s inner critic.” Join us!

“We’re not always going to have the perfect reactions and we can certainly apologize when we haven’t kept our cool or done the right thing. There’s ways to model other things like resolution or forgiveness.”

Does a good brow beating make us feel better, more able to face the challenges ahead of us? Usually not. We often shame ourselves into inertia. Would we ever say these words to a friend? There is a better way. We can be kind to ourselves and get better results and I definitely want kind self talk for my kids."

“It’s a constant journey but it’s one I know I want to be on so I just keep starting again and if I can be self-compassionate to myself, then I have something to give outside as well.”

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • The role of self-compassion in parenting
  • The three tenets of self-compassion
  • Moving past the isolation of the shame of not meeting our own expectations
  • Over-identification with our problems and how mindfulness can make a difference
  • Worry and the reality of the lack of accuracy of our future prediction
  • Phases of parenting and worry
  • Brain development and parenting – developmental challenges
  • Getting out of the emotional whirlwind
  • The role of self-comfort, recognizing and acknowledging our own suffering
  • Self-compassion as a way to build capacity for parenting challenges
  • Self-compassion and it’s relationship to compassion we can extend to others
  • Self-compassion for avoiding depletion
  • Making self-compassion part of common language in the family
  • Family meetings as a vehicle for communicating self-compassion
  • Separating the child from the behavior
  • Problem solving to avoid over identification with problems
  • Fear as a barrier to positive parenting
  • Self care as self-compassion
  • What to do when you have no room for self-care

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

I think this question is such a great one and it changes often a little bit depending on what we are talking about but I wanted to bring it back to a self-compassion idea. So, joyful courage, when we talk about it today, I’m thinking it really means being able to be loving to myself, even when I don’t feel very lovable, be loving to myself and find that sense of happiness and peace and joy. So being able to push on through things, to hold myself, and know that I’m going to get through this, and I can do something different tomorrow, or I can continue to do it this way, whatever it is, whatever the message needs to be, courageously give yourself that message and you push forward and you’re loving and kind, not judge yourself and finding that you’re a part of many, many people struggling today and you’re not the problem. You’re okay in this moment.

Rank #6: Eps 131: How to use routines to shift the dynamics in your home

Podcast cover

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

:::::

A solo show all about routines

There are a couple tools, that when put into place, make the whole parenting journey easier.  You have heard me talk about special time, that one on one time that is so important for building relationship and a solid foundation of belonging and significance for our kids.

Challenges coming up in the LLWJC group

  • mornings, bedtimes, defiance, meltdowns, sibling issues
    • We find ourselves putting out fires
    • We find ourselves being overtaxed
    • We find ourselves slipping OUT of who we want to be and INTO crazy parent
    • This is also where we loose sight of the way that we are contributing to the chaos at hand….
      • We blame out kids
      • We fall into the trap of “it is always so difficult”
      • We forget that there is always a flow that comes after the ebb….

Yes, special time helps with the challenges mentioned about.

The relationship we nurture with our kids is what has the biggest impact on their behavior, absolutely.

AND, another tool that is super helpful to come back to, again and again, is co-creating routines.

Now, if you are someone with challenges in the morning, or after school, you may be thinking, but we have a routine, and it isn’t working!!!

GREAT.

Not all routines are created equal.

  • Routines are made to be modified and changed up
  • Routines designed to be HELPFUL for everyone will be the most USEFUL

Mindset matters

  • This is not about getting your kids to do what you want them to do
  • This is about helping your children feel like capable, contributing members of the family
  • This is about the process, the opportunity that exists inside the challenge that is currently at the surface

Take a deeper look…

  • Co creating routines means that you are CO CREATING
  • Find a time of day when everyone is feeling good, connected
  • Opening up the conversation to child about how they experience the challenging time of day, validate their feelings, listen and let them know you are taking their sharing to heart – this is not time to talk them out of what they are experiencing or getting them to “see your side”
  • Clear out the space through taking accountability for your behavior. This is really important.
  • Ask for their help to make that time of day easier/better for everyone
  • Brainstorm ideas/tasks
  • Offer/counter offer if you need to
  • Be open to their ideas
  • Be firm/not rigid around your non-negotiables
    • “This is what is important to me, how could we make that work?”
    • “What is your idea for that?”
  • Cross off anything that isn’t related/reasonable/respectful/helpful on the list
  • Work together to create a visual reminder
  • Try it for a week

But, but, but what if it doesn’t “work”

  • Shifting to what is “helpful”
  • Focus on the process
  • TRUST the process
  • Let the routine be the boss
  • Revisit at the end of the week and tweak if necessary

So many routines….

  • Housework
  • Family Meetings
  • Mornings
  • Afterschool
  • Bedtime

Take it slow – let go of urgency

How you show up matters

Be in your practice of curiosity and openness – catch yourself when you want to judge  (roshambo/coin flip) Currently in a new routine of turning screens off from 5-7.  This is a slippery place for us….

Recently posted a handout on the live and love page – will put it in the show notes – for walking through this process. Let me know if you have any questions!

Rank #7: Eps 110: Finding the Need Beneath the Behavior with Alison Smith

:::::

Meet Alison Smith, mother to two adorable kids, proud wife, former elementary school teacher  and now teacher coach, advocate and revolutionary in win/win parenting.  Like many of us Alison had visions of being the best, doing the best and really being that one adult that impacted her students lives powerfully.  As a self identified recovering perfectionist, Alison entered the teaching world and become a mother. It did not take long to identify that something in the work with children had to change. Fueled by her passion and her journey, Aliso identified a need for teachers to feel supported in their work.  In her coaching, teachers are inspired and supported to be the most authentic, joyful and wholehearted teacher they can be.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Alison shares Bonnie Harris’ iceberg analogy and how it guides parents to identify the underlying root of a child’s behavior.
  • Like a medical issue, we often treat the symptom until the symptoms persist then we are forced to find the root cause.
  • Realizing that the child’s behavior that triggers us is the root cause of our reaction and inability to connect and show up best for the child.
  • Only when we dig into our roots and what is underneath our icebergs can we better guide our children through their own experiences.
  • Triggers can cause us to panic and ‘future trip’ into fear about our child’s behavior, enabling us into unhelpful methods.
  • Using our curiosity to dig to the root - is my child hungry, tired, overstimulated, cold, hot, uncomfortable, lonely?.
  • Once we identify our triggers we can move into the practice of showing up the way our kids need us to.  We chose connection and enforcement that they matter.
  • Often we misjudge our kids motivation and intention leading to disconnection and an increase in the child’s mischief.
  • Once a parent gets it and truly understands the process begins within the parent first then the practice strengthens and the child, family and parent begin to thrive.
  • There is no one perfect general response to situations with your child.
  • Practicing prevention, in-the-moment and then repair strategies alleviate and get to the root of the issue.
  • An open conversation on how parenting is shifting from authoritarian to permissive.  Why parents today need something to change and are willing to find the courage to revolutionize how the adult/child relationship evolves.

Today’s guest is Rebecca Eanes, the author of two books for parents: Positive Parenting The Essential Guide and The Newbie’s Guide to Positive Parenting. She is back to talk to us about her newest resource for parents: The Positive Parenting Workbook. Rebecca leads a community of over a million on her Facebook page, Positive Parenting Toddlers and Beyond.  Join us!

“I see and speak about parenting as a journey… and the journey is a continuous invitation to continue to practice being the parent we want to be as often as possible.”

“Parenting is one long personal development workshop.”

“My kids are the best mirrors because in them I have seen my own negative attitudes and bad moods and emotional reactions in really every area that I needed to improve upon.”

“I think we definitely grow ourselves up in the process of helping our kids grow up.”

“Our kids are going to make mistakes every day. If they had perfect parents, they would not know how to get through this world.”

“Be as gentle and respectful with yourself as you are trying to be with your kids. You are not perfect either and you don’t have to be. We are all growing, we are all learning, we are all flawed, and we all need grace. This is a journey and there’s not a destination yet that I’ve seen. It’s an ever going thing so be good to yourself along the way.”

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • Dealing with swearing and supporting kids in navigating different rules in different situations
  • Positive parenting and what it really means
  • The role of mutual respect in positive parenting
  • Identifying underlying issues under disrespect
  • Shifting focus: from disrespectful behavior itself to supporting learning that leads to respectful behavior.
  • Leadership in positive parenting
  • Non-negotiables and positive parenting
  • The value in personal development and parenting
  • Moving from behavior patrol to positive parenting
  • The origins of the Positive Parenting Workbook
  • Discipline as part of the parenting pie
  • 7 Pillars of family culture as part of positive parenting
  • Words of wisdom for parents working towards positive parenting

Julie Miller is on with us!

Julie is on a mission to live a delicious life and bring joy back to the family dinner table.  She is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Positive Discipline Parenting Educator who holds a Master’s Degree in Human Nutrition from Bastyr University.  She has over 16 years’ experience sharing food and nutrition philosophy with diverse communities throughout the Seattle area.

Julie currently specializes in helping families find their own positive feeding dynamic so that food is less of a parenting chore and more of a nourishing experience.  She believes that connection between adults, children and food sets the stage for a lifetime of personal wellness, including healthy eating.  Julie knows, as a Mom, that the constant demand to prepare and serve food can get just a wee bit tiring and tricky.  She emphasizes reducing the drama and eating minimally processed foods, while ensuring that children and adults meet their nutritional needs to support growth, development and wellbeing.

Content:

  • Got into nutrition for personal reasons
  • Had kids and discovered PD
  • So much judgment in parenting – especially fierce around food
  • Helps parents to make parenting around food a nourishing experience for everyone
  • Most typical complaint? “I don’t like it”
  • Second biggest? Picky eating
  • Parental Fatigue – parents DON’T want to cook but DO want to feel kids good food
  • PD says – “Eating, sleeping, pottying, you can’t make them do it!”
  • You CAN work on belonging, significance and influence
  • They need to be guided, not forced
  • Division of responsibility – defining roles (Ellen Satter’s work)
    • Parent responsible for what, when, where AND maintaining connection
    • Child responsible for what they eat and how much
  • Story about Rowan drinking caffeine
  • Over 12 100mg isn’t terrible
  • Under 12 no caffeine
  • Guide THEM in using the information to make informed choices
  • Until it is personally meaningful for them to feel the effects of their choices, behavior won’t change
  • AND they learn what they live
  • Before bed snacks….
    • Timing
  • Thank you bites??
  • What about suggesting…..
    • Serve food family style. Parents can mentioned all the items that are available, then the parents job is done….
  • What about the salad??
  • Short term vs long term goals
  • Let go of judgement
  • Invite kids into planning/cooking to bulk up their belonging/significance/influence
  • Your job is to provide food, provide some structure and love them unconditionally
  • Let go of self judgement/what others think/fear <3

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Joyful Courage to me is the invitation to live boldly with your own truth, to hold tight to your own convictions and values for your family and your children, and to do it in a joyful way….

Rank #10: Eps 123: Solo Show - Navigating Big Emotions From Grownups and Kids

SOLO SHOW

Context – we all have the power and the skills to be the parent we want to be

A recent post from the Live and Love with Joyful Courage community:

Can we talk about sharing our big feelings with our kids?

My kids are 2.5 and 4.5yo, and I don't know how to share my big feelings in front of them without freaking them out. I want to be able to be my full and authentic self with them, in an age appropriate way. And I realize, the fact that they are upset when I am upset means that they are afraid of my big feelings and may be afraid of their own big feelings. We try to welcome their big feelings (tantrums, disappointment, etc.) but I think we do a miserable job at it.

Compounding this, I am someone with explosive emotions. I tend to feel things very deeply and it takes me time to calm down. I have worked hard to make sure I don't express those emotions in a negative or scary way. But instead I most often bottle them up, which isn't good either.

Celebrating awareness. Celebrating emotional intelligence. Celebrating authenticity. Celebrating personal responsibility.

Misconceptions (in general):

  • not ok for our children to see us upset
  • not ok for our children to FEEL upset
    • they’re being naughty
    • they’re manipulating
    • they’re learning “bad behavior”
  • welcoming big feelings is the same as condoning hurtful behavior

This is a POWERFUL example of what I think is the PURPOSE of parenting:

  • to grow into our best selves

Children are mirrors

  • not mimics
  • instead, provide a reflection of how we effect the world, what our impact is, what we are inviting

Children/parenting journey is an invitation

  • recognizing conditioning
  • recognizing what our “driver” is
  • recognize commitment vs attachment
    • Committed to being a connected parent vs attachment to what that looks like (slippery, perfectionism, comparison)

Children/parenting journey is unrelenting

  • The lessons come every day, moment to moment
  • The growth is like peeling an onion
  • There is no where to ARRIVE

Child/parenting journey is an opportunity to grow

  • I can’t say this enough
  • Where are your hard edges?
  • Where is there room for self growth?
  • Where can flexibility show up inside of rigidity
    • “I am someone with explosive emotions.”
    • We are ALWAYS evolving
      • What can we learn about ourselves?
      • What can we practice that will be more helpful and less hurtful?
      • How can we deliver our experiences and be heard?
      • How can we create a PRACTICE that honors us and our experience while also models the life skills we want our children to one day embody?
        • Practices are UNIQUE and INDIVIDUAL
        • The myth of “balance”
        • Assumptions about our “roles”

Taking care of ourselves and our own self-regulation, in the end, will do more to teach our children and influence their behavior than any tool you can find in a book or the internet.

You’ve got this!

Today’s guest is Sara Harvey Yao. Sara is a leadership consultant who has developed more than 4,000 leaders across the globe. She specializes in helping leaders navigate pressure and stress by staying present in the moment. Sara is the author of two books, Get Present and Drop In. She’s the mother of two teen boys and can speak firsthand to how the power of presence can transform the parenting experience. We will be discussing. Join us!

"Naming feelings opens the doorways for the energy of emotion to metabolize.”

“When we’re in emotion, we’re in a different part of our brain than the language center so it’s often hard to articulate what we’re feeling.”

“Anger...is a signal fire. Something is going on here. It’s a sign your boundaries have been crossed.”

What you’ll hear in this episode:

-How naming emotions helps us process them

-Facilitating our movement through emotions in the parenting journey

-The power of acknowledging, even to ourselves, when we are struggling

-Feeling vs thinking

-Attitudes and beliefs about feelings that contribute to feeling “stuck”

-Helping our kids name and process feelings and the role of modeling

-Normalizing emotions for our kids

-Anger as a secondary emotion

-What’s really under anger

-Exploring our triggers and where our feelings are coming from

-Establishing a common language with your kids to discuss feelings

-How to support ourselves and our kids to regulate emotions

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

The courage to try something new and if that’s new to, I’m going to try a new parenting technique, if that means I’m going to sit with a feeling instead of stuffing it, I’m actually going to say something instead of not saying something, any new behavior to me takes deep, deep, deep courage and when we take those leaps into courage, for me it always ends up being really joyful. There’s such an empowered, a sense of empowerment and it leads to new opportunities or new directions that I might not have known about if I hadn’t been courageous. So those two words fit so beautifully together, it’s just joyful courageousness when we try something new.

SOLO SHOW!!

Teacher posted about a difficult class…

Response about “parenting style” naming “gentle parenting” and followed up with a post about “helicopter parenting, mom and dad are friends, no discipline or consequences….”

Lets talk about this:

  • The swing from authoritarian to permissive
  • What is kind and firm
  • Authoritative – structure and freedom
  • The most important tool we have for influencing behavior is the relationship we build with our children – that is what this week in the Academy is all about.
  • No boundaries/limits – not a solid relationship
  • No voice/ freedom – not a solid relationship
  • Mutual respect?
  • Problem solving?
  • Dignity in tact? – Dignity, the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect.

Helicopter/lawn mower/permissive parenting ROBs children of the discomfort of learning from their mistakes. It robs them of the opportunity of making things right and fixing their mistakes. Robs them of the opportunity for problem solving, accountability, ownership.

Authoritarian parenting ALSO robs kids of opportunity. When we parent from a place that threatens punishment for making mistakes, kids no longer have the luxury of learning how to really think through the decision making process, instead, they learn the “better not do it cuz I don’t want to get into trouble” or “better not get caught”

Authoritarian parenting can often lead to a lack of respect in the relationship.

Guidelines and boundaries INSIDE OF a solid, respectful relationship will increase the likelihood of cooperative, contributing children.

KIND AND FIRM – listen to your body, are you in alignment with your values and what the kid need. There is WISDOM IN THE BODY, PAY ATTENTION.

iTunes Reviews!!!

  • From January, a five star review from @chrisnjess – “I found you through Birds and bees and kids and as your podcast began, it was as if you were speaking from my own mothering journey. I feel as if you are another angel in my continuing mothering journey. I found your podcast episode bery insightful, information, and affirming. I am tuning in!!
    • Thank you @chrisnjess!!!! And you all know how much I love Amy Lang from Birds and Bees and kids – did you know she started a podcast too? It’s called “Just say this” - Check it out on itunes or wherever you are listening to podcasts
  • The podcast also received a five star review earlier this month from @urfmama – “ Casey is like my long lost sister that I’ve never met. Like minded is an understatement. When I was feeling down with my mothering I searched “positive Discipline” in podcasts and eureka! Joyful Courage appeared like a bright star in the dark night. I eat this podcast up, I tell every parent I know about it. I find myself nodding while I listen as I do my housework. I feel like my hand is being held and I ‘m gently being led through this incredibly strategic yet unpredictable “chess game” of parenting. Do yourself a favor and soak in the wisdom that Joyful Courage so generously shares. Thank you, Casey, much love from the heartland.”
    • THANK YOU @URFMAMA – one day, one day our paths will cross.

  • YES! Thank you to everyone that is jumping into itunes to leave reviews – this helps with my visibility – meaning more people are likely to find me – and it also just FEELS SO GOOD to read and know that what I am doing over here in the guest room of my house MATTERS.

Ok….  On to todays content.

Screens

Why?

  • It is coming up in the Joyful Courage Parents of Teens community, it is coming up in calls with clients, it is coming up in my own life and practice with my kids
  • FOR CERTAIN: it is a big pain in the ass

Today I am going to share and inquiry from my own experience – not because I know the way, or I have it all figured out, but because I am IN IT with you.

  • Remember last April when I had Dr. Delaney Runston on and we talked about her documentary, Screenagers? There are so many pearls of wisdom and research in my convo with her – be sure to listen or relisten - http://www.joyfulcourage.com/podcast/140
  • I also had a powerful conversation with one of my colleagues, a positive discipline Lead trainer, about this during the teen summit, which is available to invest in through the end of this month at joyfulcourage.com/teensummit
  • I spoke with Kim Muench about this back in episode 82 – Parenting in the Age of Smart phones…
  • Plus, it has come up in loads of other conversations
  • IT’S NOT GOING AWAY

Here are some of the pain points I am hearing from the community AND experiencing myself:

  • Limits and boundaries
  • How much to monitor
  • Broken agreements
  • The arguing
  • The internet is forever
  • How will they develop real relationship skills when everything is over text/IM/Snaps
  • Online/SM bullying
  • Sexting/nudes
  • How much time is too much time to be on their phones
  • How to be the lone parents who waits to get their child a phone
  • How to support kids with friends when they don’t have SM/phones
  • Restricting what they do/see on their devices
  • Begin real and honest about our OWN (parents) phone use
  • Using devices as avoidance/escape

Let’s check in with the kids:

  • How did you feel about making agreements about screens?
  • What is your experience with social media?
  • What do you not like about the phone and SM? What kinds of things do you see happening?
  • Where do you feel like it gets in the way of life? Or do you?
  • What do you like about it?
  • How do you feel about me when I am on your case about your phone use?
  • What do you see me modeling with my phone use?
  • You have some restrictions on your phone – is that helpful?

Rank #16: Eps 185: How to be fiercely committed and lovingly detached

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

::::

Today is solo show – woohoo!!  I’ve been missing you all.

I am so excited to have been interviewed by some amazing gals out there in the Podcast world. Anna Seewald of the Authentic Parenting Podcast – www.authenticparenting.com/podcast had me on and we talked about building trust – both in ourselves and our kids. Loved every minute of it and can’t WAIT to meet Anna in person at her conference in May, the Authentic Parenting Conference – www.authenticparenting.com/conference.

I was also a guest on the TILT parenting podcast. Long time listeners of JC will know Debbie Reber from episodes 54 and 145. Debbie is the founder of TILT parenting and host of the TILT parenting podcast - http://www.tiltparenting.com/. Debbie and I talk about my book, Joyful Courage: Calming the Drama and Taking Control of Your Parenting Journey, and connect the dots around how doing our own work around self control and centering is useful for all parents, whether their children are typically or differently wired. Check out those shows!!!

Today I want to talk about a mantra that I have found useful time and time again. I learned it from a friend and mentor of mine – shout out to Denise Yost! – we saw each other for the first time in a while and when I asked her how she was, she responded with “fiercely committed, and lovingly detached”

Fiercely committed, lovingly detached.

It’s this a powerful come from for parenting?

What it means to be fiercely committed?

  • Creating the environment
  • Meeting their needs
  • Advocating for them
  • Being kind and firm
  • Encouraging them

What does it mean to be lovingly detached?

  • Allowing them to be who they are
  • Allowing for them to build resiliency through navigating natural consequences
  • Allowing them to be uncomfortable
  • Trusting that they are on THEIR journey
  • Letting go
  • Giving them responsibility over their lives

What gets in the way?

  • Our dreams/vision for them
  • Our past/failures/mistakes
  • Our assumptions
  • Our addiction to what other people think
  • Our insecurity about “doing it wrong”
  • Our emotional regulation (or lack of)
  • Our lens of the “right/wrong” way

What will help us move towards “fiercely committed, lovingly detached”?

Two list exercise.

  • Challenges
    • Everyone probably has a really similar list – YAY!
  • Gifts
    • Doubt that you have any particular job description…
    • What about “happy”?
      • Can we hope for content?
      • Can we hope for healthy coping skills and resiliency?
      • Can we hope for grounded and empowered?
    • Remember the challenges are at the tip of the iceberg – and anything we “do” with the challenges should somehow, someway, teach/model/or allow our kids to PRACTICE the life skills we want them to embody.

A bit about DO.

  • So often parents want to know WHAT DO I DO??
  • In the moment tools
    • This is a narrow mindset
  • PD is a broader lens than in the moment.
    • TRSUT in developing relationship
    • TRUST that kids do better when they feel batter
    • TRUST that all humans what to be connected and know that they matter and have influence
  • In the moment?
    • Keep everyone SAFE
    • Acknowledge your child’s experience
    • Look for solutions and/or ways of making things right

They are doing the best they can with the tools they have in the moment.

  • Just because they can tell you what they will do better next time during a calm moment does NOT mean they will access that when they are flipped
  • Not about being naughty/bad – its about relationship, tools and practice

Today’s guest is Delaney Ruston, a documentary filmmaker. She believes in helping kids find balance in our tech filled world. She loves engaging audiences in solution centered discussions. We are discussing her work making the film Screenagers and how to support our kids with finding balance. Join us!

“Just start with one simple change that you want to make and the real growth is when you talk about that with your kids and you show them your journey in trying to make that change.”

“Maybe just pick one thing that you could decide to do that you’re not using tech as you normally would.”

“The key, the most absolute important thing about it is starting with something positive about technology.”

“The brain has a really hard time holding two opposite truths at the same time and it’s particularly hard for kids and teens.”

“To find sustainable solutions for tech balance and the child and teen brain we’re going to have to work together.”

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • The neuroscience of technology use and over-use
  • The individual child and technology use - micro impacts vs metadata
  • Setting attainable goals for technology use reduction
  • The power of changing just one thing
  • Recognizing the difficulty of cognitive dissonance in conversations about technology
  • Reducing defensiveness in technology conversations
  • Why 30% of families are struggling with daily fights about technology
  • What studies say about parent device use
  • Distracted parenting and interactions with our kids
  • Learning new skills: how this changes as kids grow
  • Self-regulation and parenting involvement in creating limits
  • Setting aside screen free time as a family
  • Technology and sleep - setting boundaries for wellness
  • Guidelines for young kids to set the stage for later technology use
  • Sleep time, Study time and Family time - technology boundaries
  • Digital etiquette ideas
  • When you’ve given up and need to reign things in
  • Taking stock of how we use our time
  • How to bring Screenagers into your community
  • School policies: prevalence of device use in middle and high schools
  • Impact of device use on academics in middle and high schools

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

I think life as a learning adventure is why we are on this planet and any time we can change any situation into a learning mentality it saves the day 100% So, we can only put ourselves in those situations when we have the courage to try something new and to know that when we change our mindset to realize, “Hey, what did I learn from that situation?” That’s where the real joy comes from.

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

::::

My guest today is Anna Seewald. Anna is a Parent Educator, Keynote Speaker, Author and Host of The Authentic Parenting Podcast. With background in psychology and education, having worked with children for 18 years, today she helps conscious moms and dads to become calm and connected to themselves and their children through trauma-informed education. She believes in helping children by helping parents. She has a private practice that specializes in parent education, where she provides one-on-one parent coaching, parenting, court ordered, and co-parenting classes.  www.authenticparenting.com

"Emotional regulation is the ability to regulate our own emotions and choose actions that are appropriate in that situation.”

“We can teach those skills to our children today so that they can have a better life.”

“In order to teach self-regulation or regulation skills to our children, first and foremost, we need to learn those same skills ourselves.”

“There is no misbehavior. There is only behavior.”

“There's nothing wrong with your child. There's nothing wrong with you. This is just simple biology.”

“Our compassion level has to match the intensity of the emotion that child is feeling.”

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • What is emotional regulation?
  • Gaining perspective on what it means when our child is emotionally dysregulated
  • Why toddlers struggle with emotional regulation
  • How emotional dysregulation of kids triggers parents
  • How stress contributes to emotional dysregulation in parents
  • How emotional regulation supports conflict resolution, jobs, relationships, academics
  • What is co-regulation?
  • How parents can stay regulated
  • The Four-Step Calm Formula
  • Coaching your child’s emotional regulation
  • The role of compassion in emotional regulation
  • Assessing the level of urgency in an emotionally dysregulated situation
  • Language and emotional dysregulation

  • Validating our children’s feelings in a way that matches the intensity of their distress
  • The impact of dysregulation on the verbal centers of the brain
  • Dealing with emotional dysregulation under time constraints
  • Post-dysregulation problem solving and how to nurture it
  • What to do when your child won’t talk about their feelings
  • The power of relationship in bringing emotional regulation
  • Tips for listeners who are looking to get better at helping their children grow their self-regulation skills or themselves

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

When I hear these two words together, I sort of have this feeling of a child-like wonderous, courageous, right, children have this courage, they're present and they know. They're not diluted with all the societal stuff. So this pure courage that is also joyful, this child-like courage. That's how I have a sense about those two words together.
