Episode 51: Money Tree. When Axton Betz-Hamilton was 11 years old, her parents' identities were stolen. At that time, in the early 90s, consumer protection services for identity theft victims were basically non-existent. So the family dealt with the consequences as best they could. But then when Axton got to college, she realized that her identity had been stolen as well. Her credit score was in the lowest 2%. As she was working to restore her credit, she inadvertently discovered who had stolen the family's identity. It would change everything forever. View the photograph Axton describes here. Elizabeth Kolbert: We have locked in centuries of climate change. Elizabeth Kolbert covers climate change for the New Yorker. She's the Pulitzer prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction. And she recently wrote a paragraph I can't stop thinking about. "The problem with global warming—and the reason it continues to resist illustration, even as the streets flood and the forests die and the mussels rot on the shores—is that experience is an inadequate guide to what’s going on. The climate operates on a time delay. When carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere, it takes decades—in a technical sense, millennia—for the earth to equilibrate. This summer’s fish kill was a product of warming that had become inevitable twenty or thirty years ago, and the warming that’s being locked in today won’t be fully felt until today’s toddlers reach middle age. In effect, we are living in the climate of the past, but already we’ve determined the climate’s future."Kolbert lives, to an unusual degree, in the planet's future. She travels to the places around the world where the climate of tomorrow is visible today. She has watched glaciers melting, and seen species dying. And she is able to convey both the science and the cost with a rare lucidity. Talking with Kolbert left me with an unnerving thought. We look back on past eras in human history and judge them morally failed. We think of the Spanish Inquisition or the Mongol hordes and believe ourselves civilized, rational, moral in a way our ancestors weren't. But if the science is right, and we do unto our descendants what the data says we are doing to them, we will be judged monsters. And it will be all the worse because we knew what we were doing and we knew how to stop, but we decided it was easier to disbelieve the science or ignore the consequences. Kolbert and I talk about the consequences, but also about what would be necessary to stabilize the climate and back off the mass extinction event that is currently underway. We discuss geoengineering, political will, the environmental cost of meat, and what individuals can and can't do. We talk about Trump's cabinet, about whether technological innovation will save us, and if pricing carbon is enough. We talk about whether hope remains a realistic emotion when it comes to our environmental future.Books:-Edward Abbe’s “Desert Solitaire”-Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring”-David G. Rank #1: Class 50 - The Ego. The Ego Many times spiritual seekers put themselves inadvertently in conflict with themselves. The ego is an example of this. Many feel that the ego must be conquered or supressed or even completely disregarded or ignored. As though, for some reason, the ego was a mistake and we have to do all we can to ignore or overlook or disown it. The ego is not a mistake, it is not a hindrance, it is not a curse, the ego is our life’s curriculum of ‘doing’ for the expansion of our ‘being’. The ego is actually probably the most important aspect of us in this life and it is an absolutely awesome design. It tells the story of how we think about ourselves and our universe. Everything is mirrored in our ego. >>>
Rank #2: Class 49 - The Body and the Mind. The Body and the Mind As spiritual seekers we are often quite hard on ourselves. In these next two classes we are going to talk about being kinder, specifically the body and the mind whilst in class 50 we will be discussing the ego. To be clear though, even though we will be talking about the body, mind and ego, these are actually just labels for different aspects of the soul. In reality everything is soul, these are just distinctive aspects of the soul we are already familiar with. >>>

Rank #1: Stress Relief. As we journey through our lives, our bodies experience many forms of stress -- including danger, grief, trauma, anger, and physical injury. When we don't process or release stress it remains inside our bodies, causing tension and restricted breath. Restricted breath in turn deprives the body and blood of oxygen, which can lead to hypertension, weight fluctuation, and all sorts of dis-ease. In today's meditation, we use our own breathing to cleanse our physical and emotional bodies. Using simple extension of the breath and release of the body through breath, we can significantly lower stress for a healthier life and a healthier state of mind. Rank #2: Stress Relief. We take on stress in many ways. Stress normally originates in a traumatic event or life-death situation. However, simple day-to-day events can also create stress, by triggering memories of trauma and fear. In today's meditation, we build our capacity to process and release stress. This meditation uses breath work and stillness, to increase awareness of our stress, its sources, and how to let it go. Rank #1: Your Inner Voice. Sit with your eyes closed and concentrate all of your attention on your heart. Please repeat to yourself as you have in other exercises "I am not my body, I am not my ego - I am my soul" This is your real reality. This is the real nature of you. Your inner voice. Your conscience that has spoken to you since the beginning - this is the real you. For a moment, reflect upon the possibility that the thinking, physically feeling being that we think of as ourselves is not the real us, but that tiny, silent little voice within is the real us. That tiny little voice that tries to prompt us, tries to guide us and we ignore, is actually our highest reality. Is that possible? That tiny voice that we ignore day in and day out is what we are trying to grow into. That is our highest self? Is that possible? Listen very quietly and hear what your inner voice has to say - hear the answer it has for you. Is that the voice of your soul? Focus all of your attention on it and let everything else go. Let everything else go. Sit still and silent and focus your entire life past, present and future on your soul and listen. Listen with all your heart.. It is your own eternal and infinite voice.
Rank #2: Meditating on the Heart. Please close your eyes and imagine yourself in the most perfect situation you could create here on earth. You are trying to visualize heaven here on earth. You might imagine yourself as being super-successful in your chosen vocation, or perhaps a great and powerful world leader, or a rich and famous musician or sports person. You might also imagine the perfect relationship; your partner, your perfect soul-mate brilliantly reflecting all that you had imagined your perfect mate to be. Or perhaps heaven for you is a quiet property in an idyllic forest away from the rush of the city. Perhaps heaven is just being popular and loved. Perhaps it is being close to the animals you love or experiencing the love of your children. Everything that you want for yourself or have ever wanted for yourself in this life you have achieved. Glimpse yourself in this perfect place and focus all of your attention on how you feel. See yourself in heaven here on earth, and then be supremely objective. Realize that there is no anger or hate or indeed any negativity, that the earth is by no means perfect but observe your consciousness, objectively inspect your state of mind, and you will realize that in this heaven inside of you, you are free, there is pure love, pure happiness and perfect freedom. You might visualize your heart being full of light and that all darkness - your worries, anxieties and fears - have been lifted and transformed by the flood of light from your heaven. Now, gradually, I’d like you to remove the physical inspirations you used to create the vision of heaven for you, focusing more and more on the feeling of heaven within you. Take out firstly the place, removing your dependence for example on the idyllic forest or the stadium for your huge rock concert. Then remove your dependence on being materially successful, and notice that you can still feel the heaven within you. Then remove the time, if you were imagining this in the future, notice that you are feeling heaven now, and it is not bound to any time yet to come, it is here, now. Then try removing your dependence on certain things happening so that you can feel this heaven, e.g. I can’t feel heaven until my existing partner is removed from the equation. Finally remove the physical you, stop seeing yourself in this body with these arms and legs, and if you can try removing even your superficial mind. Notice all that is left is the real you, the real you. You might try imagining yourself as a small ball of light that is being shone through. As you focus on this ball of light it is almost as if it is being cleaned and more and more light can shine through it. As if heaven is not a place or a time or even a result of some event, it is a perfect light that shines simply and perfectly through your consciousness now, in this moment.
Rank #1: Mindful Choice Guided Meditation. There is a sweet feeling inside, the feeling of being alive, which everyone can contact. We can get better at that as we practice, but it all comes down to a simple choice, an act of choosing what we know is right. And we can practice that too. We can strengthen the recognition that we have an interior choice, where we can supply our attention to what is right in us rather than what we think is wrong in us. If you are looking for a way to cut through the clutter of the mind and find a way to rest attention naturally and easily in the heart feeling, click here to see if the way of Meditation Forest is the right thing for you. Rank #2: ZfEL Ep. 1: How to Be Yourself in Every Moment: Expressing Your Authentic Self, Realizing Your True Nature, and Living with No Regrets. For many of us, they are the hardest things we will ever do: to face the fear of what others think of us, to work through the inner dialogue that keeps us questioning our self-worth and perpetuating the feeling of voidness (something is missing) and to push further to the deepest reaches of spiritual practice to reunite with, and fully express, our true nature. In this very first episode of the Zen for Everyday Life podcast I shed light on each of these challenges, talk about the common thread that ties them all together, and cover the key practices to begin working through them.
