This podcast was way better when it was done out of the Vancouver office with Matthew Keogh (?) It used to focus on exploration geology and mining news and now seems to have a focus on tech stuff, like predictive electricity modeling and “data mining”. I guess that’s fine but not for me, I would rather listen to a podcast that’s more in tune with the written publication.

Matt sits down with mining analyst Joe Mazumdar from Exploration Insights to talk about the recent surge in investment activity, namely major and/or intermediate miners participating in joint ventures, equity placements, and partnerships with explorers and junior companies.

We dig into the Newmont Mining’s (NYSE: NEM) interest in Continental Gold's (TSX: CNL) fully-permitted Buritica gold project in Colombia, and its US$39.5-million investment in Goldstrike Resources (TSXV: GSR) and the Plateau gold project in the Yukon. Joe recounts his time with Newmont, and speculates on deal structures.

Is Eldorado done? Joe doesn't necessarily think so, and also says to keep an eye on Iamgold (TSX: IMG; NYSE: IAG)!

We subsequently dig into geopolitical risk and wonder what other gold producers might be in the market to deploy capital. The discussion includes Sandstorm Gold (TSX: SSL; NYSE-MKT: SAND) paying an 84% premium for Mariana Resources (TSX: MRY; LON: MARL) and the high-grade Hot Maden gold-copper project in northeastern Turkey.

Rank #19: Miner Moment #20: Is Barrick still Canadian and does it matter? Ft Lassonde, Bristow

Podcast cover
Read more
This mini-podcast features a clash of visions between Franco-Nevada chairman Pierre Lassonde and new Barrick Gold president and CEO Mark Bristow on the value of keeping Barrick's Canadian identity and robust head office presence in Toronto.

With Bristow becoming Barrick's operating head on Jan. 1 with the finalization of the merger between Barrick and Bristow's Randgold Resources, Lassonde had a few choice words to say about the matter in the media and at the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame induction ceremony in January.

During Bristow's first conference call with Barrick shareholders on Feb. 13, he gave a fuller explanation of the company's corporate restructuring, and rebutted what he called "those short little hysterical cries about us closing down stuff."

Mark Bristow will be one of five keynote speakers at The Northern Miner's third annual Canadian Mining Symposium at Canada House in London on May 22. Visit https://www.northernminer.com/2019-canadian-mining-symposium/speakers/ for more details.
