In 2005 a 13 year old Laura Kirk started writing a diary, chronicling her life in a small town just north of London famed for a beautiful cinema and a 12th century castle built by William the Conquerer’s half-brother. Her adolescence in Berkhamsted was a fairly quiet life of school, boys, MSN usernames, sport, growing up awkwardly and using words like 'phwoar' and 'lush'. Laura kept a diary for six years, right up until she went to university. Now, along with her friend (unhelpfully, also called Laura), she's reading back over them and trying to make sense of the key issues - what exactly did ‘topping’ mean; why she was so anxious about going to parties with her friends; why did she make her family name their cat after a sixth former she fancied; and most importantly, why on earth was she so obsessed with England cricketer Andrew Flintoff? Berkhamsted Revisited is a romp back through those awkward teenage years, as seen through the eyes of two twenty-somethings. It's a must listen for anyone that grew up wondering what life was all about.…and how to build the funkiest MySpace profile.

Really different perspective, lots of fun!

I remember this era of Brit pop culture really well, and it’s really fascinating to explore Laura’s life. I am M/47/USA so I have never had an opportunity like this to share the experience of a public school educated British teen girl, it’s totally fascinating. The random moments that she is mortified by are hilarious and it’s really fun to dissect these things. Why was it so bad, looking back on it, what motivated her to react a certain way, etc. so great!

One of my favorite podcasts!

We’re feeling grown up this week, as we plan for life beyond Year 11 and paint the town red on a Friday night. Firstly, it’s time for a girls night out, so we’re hitting up Berkhamsted’s newest Indian restaurant which is rumoured to be fairly relaxed when it comes to checking IDs. Back at school, we’re busy trying to choose our A Level subjects without being swayed by the attractiveness of the teacher, or whether any fit boys might also be taking the subject.  To get in touch with questions, comments, or if you kept a teenage diary you’d like to share with us, email us: show@berkhamstedrevisited.com We’re also on Twitter and Instagram: @berkorevisited ***Please take time to rate and review us on iTunes, or wherever you get your pods. It means a great deal to the show and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us. Thanks!***

It’s exam term at Berkhamsted School, and while one of us is trying to revise, the other one is hanging out with a boy in the local library… This week, we’re talking about the trials and tribulations of exams - from our best revision techniques to the biggest mistakes we made under pressure. We look back at school sports day, which was the perfect opportunity to both mingle with the boys and show-off some neat javelin-throwing skills. And we remember the first time we dabbled with fake tan, with considerably mixed success.. With exams out the way for another year, there’s just a few days left of school before that glorious 10 week summer holiday… This week, we’re journeying back to a time before Netflix, when a Friday night staple was a trip to Blockbuster and begging your parents to let you have popcorn. Back at school, we’re discussing (and singing!) our favourite school hymns, and reminiscing about our most memorable school teachers. Finally, with the summer holidays just around the corner, we’re remembering one of our favourite indoor past times – playing on the Playstation Dancemat. This week, Laura K has somehow managed to swindle an invite to her first 18th birthday party, so we're discussing our favourite party memories, some more pleasant than others. Back at school, we're joining the co-ed vs single sex debate, and remembering what it was like having boys in the classroom. Finally, we're looking back on our education with a critical eye, reminiscing on all those important things we memorised at school but have never used, and imagining the more useful things we wish we'd been taught.
