SUMMARY:

There are basic fundamental principles about business that you need to understand. Mastering your business requires mastering the basics. It will drive your business and escalate your success. There will be changes and shifts in market dynamics, legislation, preferences and other factors that influence a business. If you build a strong foundation for a business, we can easily respond to the changes that enable us to handles the downslopes and take advantages of new opportunities.

Business Mastery Roadmap Framework

When it comes to business, five basic things must be figured out.

1. Marketing: Every business needs marketing and sales process. This is the process by which you will reach out to your customers.

For marketing, these are required:

·       Customers: Who are your customers and what do they really want? We need to identify their habits, demographics, location and every other specific detail.

·       Communication: Create messages that allow you to communicate with your target market from a logical as well as an emotional stand point.

·       Connection: Understand how you will connect with your market. It is necessary to connect with them at a visceral emotional level by understanding every little detail about them.

2. Mechanics: Mechanics is about the business and how you run it? It is about the roles, rules and reporting around your business.

·       Roles: When you start a business as a solopreneur, you play all the roles but after a certain point—even if you don't want to—you will have to let go of control and transfer your roles and it might be difficult. It is very important to know how to delegate the right roles to the right person.

·       Rules: There are several rules for play in a business. You will have to understand and know all the legal rules and they are different everywhere.

·       Reporting: These reports tell how good the business is doing, your accounts receivable and your profit and loss reporting.

3. Money: If we do business correctly, money will just follow. It deals with:

·       The Flows: How cash is flowing in and out from your business.

·       The Financial Statements: Understanding the financial end of a business. Learn financial terms, ratios and how to read financial statements like the balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and the cash flow statement.

·       The Finale: Know your end game. Do you want to sell, pass on, continue to run or let go of your business at some point?

4. Mindset: Mindset is all about- Why we do business? It is about three things:

·       Identity: Who are we and where do we stand in the marketplace?

·       Influence: Understanding the dynamics between customers, team members, vendors and other people.

·       Impact: The higher purpose of your business. Having impact with your product and services, creating a value that is greater than just goods and services, and creating something mission driven for the community.

5. Model: This is the business model itself. It is how you create, capture, campaign and cultivate value. Value is created by exchanging products and services. Create value for your customers, team, vendors, staff, management, executives, investors and for yourself.

  • Process: Building trust through guarantees and warranties so instead of just having satisfied customers we have ecstatic customers.
  • Payoff: It is to transform the relationship with your customers in a meaningful way because you have created value for them and in the process you generate sales.

Path

  • Purpose: Create a strategic relationship so that you can design a journey that is meaningful and it is capable of amplifying the relationship to a higher level.
  • Process: It is to expand what you offer. Two primary ways to do this is by providing ancillary services, and by bundling to increase the perceived value in the marketplace.
  • Payoff: When you do this effectively, the payoff is cash. It fuels your growth, expansion and accretion.

  • What fits with you: How you want your life to be in this lifestyle business
  • Create curriculum and process: Package your knowledge properly to be effective
  • Scale vs leverage: How you leverage what you know versus scaling and growing everything together
The Practice Spectrum

This framework helps you decide on the type of practice that you can do. On one axis there’s ‘process’ and on the other it’s ‘intellectual property access’.

  • 1 to 1: It is the hours for dollars model. You have a specific hourly rate and you swap your time for it. It has a limit to it when it comes to increasing your income as there are limited number of hours in a day. You have to think about moving up from here.
  • 1 to Many: There are different ways you can do one to many like with seminars, speaking sessions, online video/audio. A lot of times it is in speaking sessions where you impact many people with a single content that you deliver.
  • 1 to Few: It’s about giving more access to you. So you limit the number to small groups. It is higher priced as you give more access to your intellectual property, wisdom and knowledge.
  • Many to Many: A higher level situation that you need to build up before trying. You can go many to many by licensing your process. Train other people about your results, procedures and frameworks so they can deliver for you.

We will talk about Scaling and Leveraging a Practice in the next episode but to set the lay of the land, there are four primary ways of business models: (1) Time, (2) Product, (3) Hybrid and (4) License based.

  • Understand what your talents and skills are. To really find your greatness, discover the level of uniqueness that you can take to the marketplace. You might have accumulated your talents or the things that you are good at from school, with education, by reading and researching, or from your life experiences and mistakes. The things that you are good at can be in areas like design, technology or just anything else. These are the skills that even other people know that you are good at and they come looking for you when they need that specific talent. This is what you are going to monetize in the future.
  • Identify the opportunity where you can use your talents to serve, shift and make a difference. The intersection of your skill and the opportunity to impact positively is called your Niche, and it is imperative that you identify the niche that you can serve with excellence. So, marry and match your special abilities with the opportunities that might exist out there.
  • Next, you should have the action and discipline which is the over-arching beam that brings together everything mentioned above. Today, those who have the ability to make a tremendous impact are lacking in success because they are missing this special ingredient. So, in order to bring success and cash flow into your game, you must have the discipline to work countless hours, and sweat blood and tears, and finally find the success that you are seeking for.

Also, identify the intersection between your skills and the action which is Development—where you grow with what you already know by putting it into use. Similarly, the marriage between discipline and opportunity is Monetization—where you find the ability to have an impact and create a lucrative gig.

Finally, the sole focal point that everything intersects in is where your greatness lies. It is the union of: Talents/Skills, Opportunities, and Action & Discipline.

Personal Growth: At the very bottom of this framework is personal growth. In order for you to succeed, you need to be willing to do things and have that inherent desire to grow.

Perseverance
  • Purpose: Why are you doing this? Why do you want this goal? Write it down because purpose is effectively your emotional why.
  • Passion: What is the passion you bring to it? You got to have strong emotions behind it so that you and your team will get behind the mission.
  • Patience: Have the patience to continue on the path to build things. You can’t control everything but you need to have the patience to deal with the setbacks and move forward.
Practice
  • Plan: What are the bite-sized action steps that you have in place? You need to plan out the resources, people and help that you need in your journey.
  • People: Who are the people you need? Success is never a solitary pursuit. Think of the people you need like employees, team and customers.
  • Positivity: Have positive expectancy. Be idealistic as well as realistic. Come up with 2 to 3 emotionally compelling positive statements to bring you back to the center.

The Success Zone Evaluator

On one side of it is action, and on the other is focus. Depending on how you score on these two factors, you lie in one of the following four zones:


  • Frozen Zone: With very little focus and action, the people that are here are doing nothing to vitalize their life and are spending the time that they have on things that don't contribute to any type of positive results. They have been squandering away the years on things that may erode their health, business, relationship and wealth.
  • Scattered Zone: If you rank here, then you are full of energy but you lack the focus to invest the energy in a particular direction. Sporadic results are common in the scattered zone where there may be momentary successes but they are not sustainable. Instead of shifting gears regularly, you have to create systems in place to focus your energy and trigger yourself for productivity gains.
  • Hope Zone: People who hope all day long instead of taking action is in this zone. They are hoping, they stare at things, and all they know is where they want to be and what they would like to have. Identifying the goals isn't enough because we need to have a process in place for you to take action so you find yourself in a better and successful position.
  • Success Zone: When you have high focus and high action that is moving you towards the direction of triumph, you are in this zone. You are someone who has a conservative focus that moves you forward. High performers and achievers who know where they want to go and are pushing their actions to take them there are the folks in the success zone.

These are the things that you need to know to be perceived as an authority:

  • Impact Focus: To be in a thought leader level, we need to focus on the impact that our information, business and thought process has.
  • Unique Insights: You cannot be a repeater but have to give unique perspective.
  • Solution Driven: There’s a specific problem and you have the precise solution for it.
The Authority Acceleration Matrix

In this matrix, at the bottom there is no reputation and at the top, there is great reputation. On the left, there is low knowledge and on the right there is deep knowledge. Here are the types of people present in the four quadrants:

  1. Task Junkie: In the lower left quadrant, someone who is really task driven and income is low. It feels like serving time and swapping it for dollars.
  2. Book Worm: In the bottom right quadrant, people who are relatively unknown. They are the ones in the offices who love their work and are technically astute.
  3. Great Imposter: In the top left quadrant, this is someone with a low or just surface level of knowledge but is a good marketer. They have a short lifespan because they don’t possess the depth of skill.
  4. Authority: In the top right quadrant is where you want to be. These folks are highly valued because of their unique insights and distinct solutions. They really have a deep level of knowledge.

The focus of these four types of folks differs. On the bottom you have no focus and impact focus respectively and on the top, there’s marketing focus and knowledge focus respectively. What you want to do is have a deep level of knowledge and be capable of tremendous impact in order to transcend from commodity space to premium dollar space.

The Tale of Irresponsible Marketing

I worked with a service provider that helped me to reach and connect with my customers. Within a week, the CEO makes a blog post which starts out as "Death of the business name". It reflects on how the company's creator looks back at his four year old business and realizes that he secretly despised it. This story spans to three posts over a week and it keeps the clients in suspense about the future of the company.

The idea behind it was to create suspense, generate attention and then share their re-structuring plans. The post generated a lot of attention in a negative way. The way it was presented, abused the pristine client-provider relationship.  He should have started with the re-structuring idea instead of polarizing the customer-base.

Lessons that came out of this irresponsible marketing effort

First we need to understand the objectives of marketing.

- It's to create relationships that will convert into sales.

There are 5 objectives:

  1. To capture the market's attention so they notice what you have to offer and how it'll make a difference in their life.
  2. To communicate with empathy to show that you care about the customers, clients and your team.
  3. To create deep seated loyalty by offering your customers a solution that doesn't just solve the issue but also creates a bigger vision for them.
  4. To convey low risk opportunity or entry point for your customers to do business with you.
  5. To connect emotionally so that your customers are with you because they believe in you.

The five questions we need to ask when deciding to go on a marketing campaign:

  1. Is it responsible?
  2. Is it caring and compassionate?
  3. Is it respectful?
  4. Does it build trust?
  5. Does what you are doing create a positive buzz and will people will talk about it?

One way to do it is with the help of a tool called The Productivity Ritualizer and it has 10 time zone rituals for your day.

10 Time Zone Ritual

With 5 times zones in the morning and 5 in the evening that can be a maximum of 90 minutes, it is framework for you to effectively invest your time.

Morning

  1. Creative Time: This is the time for you to do your creative work. Now, your creativity can peak at different times—in the morning, or later on in the day. Spend the time creating, building and inventing.
  2. Exercise Time: Spend a little time for your exercise and it will help you to energize and bring vibrancy back in your body to wake it up. Make sure you are always doing it, even when you are traveling.
  3. Team Time: Now it's the time to look at your team and provide them everything they need from your end so that they can carry on with their work even when you are not around.
  4. Strategy Time: Revisit where you are heading towards. Take your 90 day plans, have strategies in place and make sure that they are working.
  5. MIF Time: Most Important First is when you do the tasks of the day by the order of their importance. It's not placing the difficult ones in front; it's doing something that ranks high in your priorities.
Evening

  1. Review Time: This is when you check off your to-do lists, and review anything that comes from your team, clients or customers.
  2. Wins Time: No matter how small they are, acknowledge the things that have happened throughout the day and document the wins.
  3. Gratitude Time: Try to make gratitude your daily act and reflect on who or what you are grateful for. Acknowledge your team members and it can turn around their day.
  4. Plan Time: Plan for the next day with three W's: (1) What are the 3 things that you need to get done, (2) What's for the next day and (3) Who are the people you need to connect with.
  5. Unplug Time: Completely unplug from all the agendas, and have the time for you to just disconnect.

The Influencer’s Evolution

There are 6 stages to it:

  1. Purpose: What is your purpose? You are it. This is really about you. If you don’t get it right, you will find friction in life and if you get it right, you end up with flow.
  2. Perspective: This is about what you know. You know it. It will be a drain if you don’t have a process to it and if you do, then it gives you distinction.
  3. Positioning: Positioning is about them. They see it. If you don’t do it properly, you are invisible but you will be in demand if you do it in a proper fashion.
  4. Platform: They get it, your stuffs and solutions. If it’s not properly done, you will be isolated but if when it’s done right, you’re building a community who will champion you forward.
  5. Prosperity: This is about the rewards. We value it. If we don’t know what is going on, then you will be unfulfilled versus being fulfilled when you get it right.
  6. Plan: We see it and we need to plan after we get the five mentioned above right. If you don’t plan properly, we get random results. But if we keep the five in mind and make the right plans, we end up with predictable and deliberate results.

This episode is the second part of a two part series on communication. This one covers The Resolution Roadmap and it helps us understand how we can have a difficult conversation with others.

The Resolution Roadmap

It is about learning, clarifying and understanding the opening, conversation and completion of a dialogue.

Opening

  • Issue: At first, you need to learn what the issue is. Share or discover the challenges by asking or telling explicitly.
  • Example: Seek to clarify by giving a specific situation or example. Instead of being generic, you will have to specifically mention the challenges and the issues.
  • Concern: Share your concern without accusing the other party. Make sure that they understand what the concerns are.

Conversation

  • Importance: They should understand why it is important for us to have a good resolution. Create a dialogue where you connect and explain what the importance is.
  • Personal: Clarify the personal side of it without them feeling attacked. Allow them to own the issue and you should also own what you brought to the situation. Take the responsibility of your contributions and you will have the ability to shift it.
  • Listen: Give them the opportunity to voice their understandings and concerns. You need to listen, see where it goes without interrupting and don't get caught in the details.

Completion

  • Curiosity: After hearing their positions and concerns, you have the opportunity to tell them where they are not right. But instead of keeping score or attacking them with words, you can use language patterns which tells them that you are curious and you want to understand the situation better.
  • Resolution: In some cases, we might need to dictate a resolution; but to create something that is embraced by people, we need to jointly come up with a solution. This is how you find a meaningful resolution.
  • Agreement: After creating a resolution, come to an agreement so that you can move forward. At the end, the needs of all the people invested in the conversation should be met.

In this episode, we continue our discussion of the key decisions you need to make as an entrepreneur. Specifically in this episode we explore how to gain market distinction through your core strengths.

Of the three phases of business and product life framework, the first stage of the Think Up phase is the Decide stage and it comes before Idea. In this episode, we dive a bit deeper in the decisions you need to make as an entrepreneur.  We dig into the decide stage which relates to the concept of core strengths.

This concept of core strengths deals with three factors:

  1. What are your Abilities?
  2. What are your Interests?
  3. How to connect these with the Market Needs that you're going to serve?

If you look at these three as a circle or Venn diagram:

  • The intersection between the abilities and the interests is where your passion lies.
  • The intersection between the abilities and the needs is where the solution lies.
  • The intersection between the needs and the interests is where your potential lies.
  • The intersection between the abilities, the interests and the needs is your core strengths.

You need to ask certain questions to step in and understand your abilities, interests and needs. Answer these questions and journal them to get an overview:

Questions to Understand Abilities

  • What are your current and prior work and volunteering experiences?
  • What skills and talents come out of those experiences?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • What kind of training do you have?
  • What kind of formal and informal education do you have?
  • Do you have a degree or do you attend seminars?
  • What types of skills do you quickly learn or what are you simply good at?

These things define and refine what your abilities are. You can ask about your abilities and skills to other people that know you or are close to you.

Questions to Understand Interests

  • When you think about what interests you, what is the first thing that comes to mind?
  • What do you read, shop for?
  • What TV shows/movies, music and audio that you prefer?
  • What do you do with your free time?
  • What are your favorite physical activities?
  • What is it that you always wanted to learn?
  • What are you curious about?
  • What intrigues you?
  • How do you define fun?
  • What's something that you've always wanted to do?
  • What training program do you want to go through?
  • If you day dream, what do you day dream about?

Market Needs: This defines the types of businesses that might fit with your abilities and interests. There are a number of types of business that exists. They are:

  • Advisory
  • Builder
  • Nurturer
  • Communicator
  • Entertainer
  • Investor/Owner
  • Organizer
  • Implementer/Administrator
  • Salesperson
  • Techno-Addict

When you look at these types, think about where and when your abilities and interests come to play. When you feed the needs of the marketplace with your unique abilities and interests, you create distinction which in-turn creates a level of strength and that is what we call Core Strength.

SUMMARY:

1.     As an entrepreneur, you might get sucked into your business so much that you miss out on the other important aspects of life. If this happens, it won't be worth it – as having your own business should actually allow you to create a community, support the society and live your dreams.

2.     Make sure to take a time off every 90 days or so and do three things: Reflect, Reconnect and Rejuvenate.

  • Reflect: Take a vacation or a long weekend, and block out your work and schedule. Reflect on the things that you experienced. Think about both the good and bad experiences. As you look back, recognize and celebrate your wins. Also reflect about the missteps that could have been improved.
  • Reconnect: You are able to do great things because of the people that support you. Take your time to reconnect with those loved ones and talk to them. Also, reconnect with the purpose, mission and vision of your life; as it keeps you on track.
  • Rejuvenate: After reflecting and reconnecting, you are naturally rejuvenated. A lot of energy builds up in you and you are ready to take on the next 90 days. To make rejuvenation more meaningful, make sure to be grateful for the things that you have and that have happened to you. Be prepared, make your commitments and get ready to take on the coming days.

3.     Practical takeaways to change your life:

  • Handwrite with a pen on a card and send it to the people that matter, thanking them for being in your life.
  • Journal every ideas, the things that you've learned and the experiences that you had. Make it a weekly habit.
  • Block your time out for a retreat, 12 months in advance. Plan this ahead and mark your calendar. Plan your trip and the experiences you want to have.

  2. Manager: They focus on delegating the duty to the taskers and they are in fact driven by processes and systems. They manage those to get an outcome. The result that they look for is consistency.
  3. Leader: They are there to create a bigger vision for people to see and get behind as they are the role models. They focus on evolutionary change which allows things to move positively and grow.
  4. Thought Leader: They have elements of all the other levels of leadership and they focus on thinking. They are the thinkers who want to create a movement and people will rally for it. A thought leader creates revolutionary change by shifting the thought process and behavior.

The Gratitude Grid

Internal

  • Notice: We are able to notice the good and bad things in life, but it is a matter of what we pay our attention to. Without ignoring the bad, intentionally notice the good that comes in our path.
  • Humility: It is imperative to be modest and respectful while putting away your ego. Your modesty attracts many towards you, and the respect you have for others will make you humble which in turn will help you become grateful towards the things in life.
  • Commit: Really commit to showing gratitude, and stop perpetuating the negativity that might exist around your life. Instead of complaining, criticizing and judging, break that pattern and commit to it.

Activity

  • Journal: Journal everyday at the same time to write about the five things that you are grateful for. Those things might repeat or change but you should truly feel, reflect and appreciate them.
  • Compliment: Without having ulterior motives, introduce complimenting words as a part of your everyday vocabulary. Don't miss the opportunities where you can honestly compliment others—that you know or don't know—at least three times a day.
  • Cause: Find the external thing that is driving you and go out there to give back. It should be something that is beyond your accomplishments, and do it so that the lives that you have touched are better because of you.

Practice

  • Transform: Your negative associations and memories should be transformed into positives. When they are triggered, you have something warm and fond to remember. Transforming them might be complex but over time it is possible.
  • Learn: Get to know about other people and things so that you can grow as a person, intellect and a force in the society. Learn something new every day.
  • Sincerity: Be sincere while being grateful. Do not do it just as a checklist, but do it with authenticity. If you really mean it, you end up feeling much better.

The only way to sell and generate revenue from anything that is commercially viable is to create value in someone else's life. Only then will they be willing to pay for it and you will receive value in return.

Let us drill down into the concept of Value Creation Piece. After generating an idea, evaluating and selecting it, we create value. We can create value in these different levels:

1.     Utility Based Value: It can be anything that performs a function to serve a need or purpose. The need might or might not be of high value. This includes all the commodity based products and services.

2.     Service Based Value: When we give something more than a product or commodity, there are services, connections and relationships attached to it. This is value creation at a different level because we have attached a product with some level of service.

3.     Experience Based Value:  When we create experience for our customers, team and for ourselves in the process of delivering a product or service. We should strive in every circumstance to create an environment that is memorable. It should create a connection which is experiential in perspective.

4.     Value Based Creation: This is a higher level where businesses really thrive, expand and grow. It is all about how you take your product or service to not only create experience but also to speak the value of your customers and team. It requires the highest level of dedication.

Satisfaction Line

People buy with their emotions and justify with logic. But we should consider something called the satisfaction line. On one side of this line, you are enhancing value and on the other, you are eroding it.

Value Enhancing vs. Value Eroding

·       Enhance Value: Deal at the unexpected needs level to bring trust and loyalty.

·       Eroded Value: Understand and deal with unhappy customers. Move them across the satisfaction line.

So, think about where you create value and in the next episode, we will get into the two frameworks: Value Sectoring Framework and Value Focus Framework.

If we don’t conquer this thing called self-sabotage, we find ourselves in a situation where we create strategies that break down, we relive the experience over and over again, and we also feel helpless. But if we are able to conquer it, our confidence builds, we have micro successes that needs to be celebrated and we get a bigger vision.

In order to defeat self-sabotage, we need to:

  • Have Behavior Baselines: Recognize those behaviors that contribute to self-sabotage.
  • Get to Higher Ground: Move upstream to identify the trigger.
  • Keep Your Eye on the Prize: Understand why we are in the game.

The Sabotage Eliminator

There are 4 stages involved in removing self-sabotage from your life:


  1. Observe Behavior: Revisit and reflect those times when you felt self-sabotage and discern those behaviors. You need to become aware of it and recognize what it is. Find the pattern of such behavior and then list them out. It could be any habits or patterns that distract you—things like internet, food and drinks.
  2. Define Trigger: Find that moment in time that triggers the behavior or thought which redirects you from success to unproductivity. Identify the thought process or mindset and do it specifically so that you get an understanding of what is going on.
  3. Replace Behavior: Now, it is time to replace the behavior with something that is more appropriate, positive and productive. Do this by connecting the old triggers with a positive behavior. Journaling or writing down the commitment statements definitely help you stick to it.
  4. Get Champions: Find mentors, accountability partners and a community who are willing to help and support you. Give them your triggers, old and new behaviors that they can identify. Also, give them the permission to hold you accountable for your actions. Finally, tie the outcomes to a consequence or reward and you are on your way to eliminate self-sabotage.
