What is a Win-Win-Win in your business?
After a recent article - "Leave No Client Behind" - made its way around the inter webs, I received a TON of requests to have Patty on the show. Well, here it is.
Patty is an OG in the CrossFit world, as you'll hear in some of his stories. He's tried every potential business model, but always found it lacking in one of three areas: profitability for the business, opportunity for coaches, and sustainability for clients. He's landed on what he believes to be optimal solutions on all three fronts.
After earning his mechanical engineering degree, working for two Fortune 100 companies in business development, and starting a green building design firm from scratch, Patty decided to try his hand in the fitness industry.
Patty opened the world’s fifth CrossFit affiliate and Canada’s first in Vancouver in 2004. He was mentored directly by CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman from 2004 to 2009 and because of this relationship with Greg, Patty’s gym “always looked different."

A departure from my typical Skype interview, today’s episode is all about gym owners sitting around, shooting the s%&t. This week we’re joined by some of the 321Go team - Stefan Cox from CrossFit Turbine, Don Moss from CrossFit Apogee, Ashley Bacsu from CrossFit 317, and Jamie Gallagher from CrossFit Burke. We chat about the importance of finding other entrepreneurs to share the struggle, hiring and firing staff, and finally viewing yourself as a professional business (and charging accordingly). WARNING: As you can imagine getting a bunch of gym owners in the same room can get a bit colorful. Today’s episode is slightly less PG-13 than our usual format.

But, I guess if your L1 staff included Greg Glassman, Dave Castro, and Andy Stumpf that message is sort of in your DNA. But for Jamie, owner of CrossFit Burke, this message was ingrained during his tenure in the Marine Corps. Jamie shares with us some of the ways he's taken these lessons of brilliance and applied them to leadership and coaching in his business.

Investing in Staff. There are a hundreds of compensation models available to business owners - and probably even more for gym owners. Regardless of where you are today, there are two things I want you to remember: Don't compare yourself to anyone else Sure, there are gyms that claim to pay their janitor more than you're making but, chances are, these are exaggerations or 1-off exceptions. Opportunity, hope, entrepreneurialism, vision, leadership, giving back to a community, education & development are all just as motivating as cash. Be a strong, caring leader first & compensation will follow. We'll discuss many options, their pro's and cons, but each will be framed by the above. Here's a break-down: -Swapping for Membership -Paying Per Class -Specialty Classes & Personal Training -Paying for Space -4/9ths -Paying for extra duties dubbed "Building Block" Model on-air. -Per Head Pay Here's the deal: Each of these models is only as effective as the leader implementing them. Don't get overwhelmed by all your options. Your focus is people & helping your employees build their perfect day.
