Rank #1: E251: Surprising New Perspective on the EMP Nightmare. An EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) attack is one of the top three most feared catastrophes by preppers. An episode dedicated to discussing an EMP is one of the most requested topics In The Rabbit Hole gets. But we held off on doing it all these years. The reason was this: We wanted someone who had the credentials and background to speak on the topic expertly. That required a very special person who understood the physics, math, preppers, and prepper fiction. Note: This episode is technical. We do our best to make the EMP topic approachable for everyone. But somethings just are what they are. With that... Let’s. Discuss. EMPs! EMP Topics Covered and Myths Dispelled: Are EMPs a real threat or a Prepper fiction fantasy? Despite a 24/7on-call job, Mary Ann draws on her Norwegian heritage and thestubbornness she attributes to it to motivate her to follow her ownpath. She weaves the story of her journey by sharing with us herfamily's shepherding past, her father's hobby farm, and her ownconnection to the wind, the beach, and the rich farmland she grewup with. "It's in my blood," she tellsus, "You bend your neck, and walk towardsthat wind." Mary Anne channeled her Viking stubbornness and sense of ethicsand ingenuity to go, full-steam ahead, on her own path. When herjob moved her across the Atlantic to America, she got to the pointwhere she realized focusing exclusively on work wasn't reallyliving. For Mary Anne, finding that work-life balance meantbringing animals into her life. "There were parts of me I loved using that I couldn'treally use in my daily job. I was feeling lacking not being able touse those parts of me." Mary Anne encourages us to fit our passions into our existingroutine. It is hard work, and it takes time. The key is, YOU HAVETO START. Cody from Wranglerstar"There was only one four letter word in our familygrowing up. And that was 'can't'." Cody, or the Wranglerstar Youtube Channel, shares with us the"figure it out" mentality he was raised with that led him down hishomesteading path. After starting small businesses throughout highschool, he graduated from high school and bought himself anexcavator. With a huge monthly payment, he was highly motivated totake on work, and made a name for himself for taking on thetoughest jobs. Cody realized through his work in constructionthat he took good craftsmanship seriously. Cody encourages us to do our best work, even if no onewill ever see it. We should be proud of the work wedo. Cody introduces us to the concept of the "makers mark," whereeach craftsperson had a mark they put on their products to identifyeverything they make. Tradespeople throughout history used theirown personal marks to identify their products from the others inthe marketplace. Cody's own journey is full of risks. He became a firefighter, and started his own online business selling auto parts. Hehad a successful business, and his dream home. His wife was makinga six-figure income. They would work six days a week and drop theirson off at his grandparent's house each day. One day, Cody came across a book written by a man who quit hishigh-income job and moved to an off-grid homestead in Montana. After visiting this homestead, Cody and his wife decided to walkaway from their lifestyle and move into the wilderness. "We were rowing in the same direction,"Cody says, "Andtogether we made it happen." The values Cody holds dear make him feel that even though hisbank account is smaller, he has much more. He values that 100% ofall his efforts directly benefit his family. Cody and his wife arenow able to work entirely on their homestead, with their son, andlive debt-free. Every day, they inspire others to take a look attheir lives, and see where they can make changes. "If the deep end isn't the right spot for you-that'sok." Cody shares that he started with a 4"x8" garden bed. His wifelearned to can. Everyone starts somewhere. You don't need to buy 60acres to start homesteading. So where are you right now? Are you feeling the motivation tomake a change? Don't let the feeling pass you buy. Get set.... Make the decision to walk against the wind. Sit down with a pen and paper. List exactly what you want. From the Suburban Escapee This episode hit on so many important points. As a former runnermyself, I remember those hours of practice on the starting blocks, waking up the next day with muscles aching I didn't even know Ihad. Yet another metaphor for the homesteading journey. Whatmuscles are inside of you, that YOU have never built up before? The stories of Mary Anne and Cody are so important to heartogether, because Mary Anne has incorporated homesteading and herpassion for animals into her existing life, while Cody completelyopted out of his former existence and has made homesteading hisentire life. These stories, juxtaposed against one another, highlight again that each path is unique- our view on homesteadingis about creating a lifestyle that is right for YOU. I am a person who is passionate about her "day job," and have atool from my professional repertoire as an expressive artstherapist that can help set you on your path. I am going toencourage you to take Aust's recommendation to sit down with a penand a notebook one step further, and make a Vision Board. Here'show you do it: Gather some supplies: a piece of paper, magazines, markers, pens, pencils, photos of people and places that are important toyou. Have a computer and a printer available, if possible, to allowyou to print pictures or quotes Create a quiet space for yourself, and your partner, ifapplicable, and ask yourself/yourselves the following questions: What does my ideal lifestyle look like? What makes me feel good? What are my values? Where am I now? What am I good at? What do I want to learn? Where do I want to go from here? Take your supplies that you have collected and create a collagewith pictures, words, and images that capture your answers to yourquestions. There are several ways you can do this: glue thepictures to paper, use magnets or thumbtacks to stick them on abulletin board. In the spirit of vulnerability, and encouraging thesharing of dreams, here is a picture of my current vision board. Iused little clothespins and some twine to hang my inspirations andmotivations: I'm in the middle of my own transition right now. Rank #2: Why You Should Be Planting Fruit Trees and Bushes On Your Homestead. Trees are a generational gift. There is significant symbolism associated with trees. Trees have signified wealth throughout history. Having your own tree meant prosperity. On this episode of Homesteady, we are focusing on fruit trees. In focusing on fruit trees, and planting fruits, we are expanding upon the idea of "bearing fruit" to a discussion of assets and liabilities. Assets put money in your pocket; liabilities take money out of your pocket. Making connections between wealth, a homesteading lifestyle, and the practical steps you can take to leave the rat race, and the hands-on work of raising animals, planting plants, and building infrastructure is part of the Homesteady culture. To this end, we'd like to bring you a quote from the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Aust learns the following important lesson: You must know the difference between an asset and a liability. But what does this have to do with fruit trees? It's like planting a tree. You water it for years; then one day it doesn't need you anymore. It's roots are planted deep enough. The tree provides shade for your enjoyment."- Robert Kiyosaki, Rich Dad Poor Dad As homesteaders, we want even more than shade. We want the work we do each year to result in greater and greater yields. Our guest tonight, Dave Hunt of Northeast Edible, shares how his passion for fruit trees and feeding his family better led to planting fruit trees, then to a homestead-based fruit tree business. Learn everything you need to know about how to choose plants, where and when to plant them, and the timeline from planting to having a harvest. Rank #1: Survival Medicine Hour: Pregnancy Risks Off The Grid, Stings and Bites, More. #358 SURVIVAL MEDICINE HOURThis week, not only did we undergo a record heat wave in parts of the country, but so did Europe (where air-conditioning is not that common)! If that wasn't enough, a near-miss by an asteroid known as 2019 OK came within 45,000 miles of earth (the moon is 220-240,000 miles away) and a plague of grasshoppers (apparently mild-mannered ones) made its way through Las Vegas!Survivalists take "be fruitful and multiply" as instructions for a post-apocalyptic event, but the truth is that you don't want your female group members pregnant at a time when everyone has to be at 110% efficiency. Dr. Alton discusses some of the complications that could take away a valuable member of your team when they're needed most.Plus, grasshoppers might not bite, sting, or transmit diseases, but there are plenty of bugs that can. Amy and Joe discuss bees, wasps, and hornets as part of a multi-part series on bites and stings. All this and more on this episode of the Survival Medicine Hour with Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy!Wishing you the best of health in good times or bad,Joe and Amy AltonDon't forget to check out Nurse Amy's entire line of quality medical kits and individual supplies at store.doomandbloom.net!
Rank #2: Survival Medicine Hour: Kissing Bugs, Chagas Disease, Broken Bones, More. It’s a rare individual who passes an entire lifetime without breaking a bone. Accidents happen, and trauma can occur with such force that even bones may be damaged. Injuries to bones present in the form of breaks in the skeletal structure called “fractures”. In the U.S., it is estimated that the average person will experience two fractures during their lifetime, not including broken teeth. The Altons tell you all about the different types of fractures, how a bone heals, and much more you didn't know about treating a break. Also, a special report on Kissing Bugs. No, not kissing bugs, as in how to kiss bugs, I mean kissing bugs, an invasive species from south of the border that is now found here in Tennessee and as far north as Pennsylvania and Illinois. They cause a potentially fatal infection called "Chagas Disease". Dr.Alton, aka Dr. Bones, tell you all you need to know about the insect and the parasite it carries that can get you sick.Medics in areas of conflict are always at risk for violence. There are circumstances where non-military personnel on humanitarian missions become targets in times of “peace”. This is currently the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo; health workers combatting the Ebola epidemic there are being attacked and looted by armed groups under the control of local warlords. Recently, a World Health Organization (WHO) physician, Dr. Richard Mouzoko Kiboung, was killed at a treatment center. Would you be safe if you were the medic in a world without the rule of law?All this and more in the latest Survival Medicine Hour with Joe and Amy Alton!Wishing you the best of health in good times or bad,Joe and Amy AltonDon't forget to check out our books, DVDs, medical kits, and more at store.doomandbloom.net!
