Rank #1: How to Increase Sales By Understanding Your Buyer’s Journey

Podcast cover
Read more

You’ve likely heard the concept of building the “know-like-trust” factor in order to convert leads into sales. As a business owner you have to have some sort of strategy for getting someone from the place of not even knowing who you are, to becoming a paying customer. Understanding your customer journey is critical for your business, which is why I wanted to talk about it today.

This is something I recently took my October mastermind group through, and it opened up a lot of eyes…

Frankly, the customer journey isn’t something that a lot of people teach, but I can tell you that it is a major reason why people aren’t converting leads to sales in their businesses.

On this episode I’m going to break it all down for you and simplify everything, and after listening, you’ll see why your offer most likely isn’t the problem if you’re having trouble getting sales. What I share with you today will help give you better understanding of your customer’s journey, and why it’s so important to your success!

Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. At this time we have over 500 5-Star ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, which is great, but I’ve set a goal to get 750 of them now by the end of this year, December 31st, 2019. If you’ve gotten value from this podcast, I’d really appreciate you subscribing and leaving an honest rating and review. Take a screenshot, share it on your Instagram Stories and tag me, @rickmulready. When we hit the 750 ratings and reviews, I’ll be raffling off a book bundle of my top 10 business and mindset books for one lucky winner. If you’ve already left a rating and review, just take a screenshot and tag me on Instagram, and you’ll be eligible to win as well!

Want to win a 30-minute strategy session with me? I’ll be drawing one winner at random each month, and all you have to do is give me your feedback on this podcast over at http://rickmulready.com/messenger, telling me what you’d like to hear more of - including topics you’d like to see covered, guests, style and frequency of the show!

On the Show Today You’ll Learn:
  • What understanding your customer’s journey will allow you to start doing in your business
  • The 5 different stages of awareness and how they each apply to your business
  • Why you should be taking the time to build awareness, rather than going immediately to the next step
  • Content and marketing strategies to implement at each stage of the process
  • What needs to happen after a buyer purchases from you
  • How I reverse engineer the customer journey starting with my end goal in mind
  • A “real life/hypothetical” example of someone’s customer journey that demonstrates these principles in action

Rank #2: #3: What's Working Right Now with Facebook Ads

Today’s episode of The Art of Paid Traffic is a solo one where we'll be continuing our mini-series on what's working right now with Facebook ads.

Here's a hint...Website Custom Audiences.

If you're not familiar with Website Custom Audiences (or WCAs as the cool kids call them), it's Facebook's version of retargeting. Using this type of targeting allows you to show ads to people on Facebook who have visited your website or landing page.

It's definitely my favorite feature when it comes to targeting Facebook ads because it's so powerful.

In today's episode, I share some strategies and ideas for how avoid leaving big money on the table using Facebook's WCAs so you can maximize leads and sales.

Rank #3: How a Former Teacher Generated $300k in 3 months

Podcast cover
Read more

Today’s guest is a student of mine who is sharing an amazing story of how she was able to leave her full-time job of teaching in December 2017, after almost 8 years in the classroom, due to the tremendous success of her online business.

Kayse Morris got started on what was then a side hustle 6 years ago by selling her teaching resources on Teacher Pay Teachers. After making $600 in her first year of doing it, in three years she had tripled her salary from teaching and generated 6-figures online.

In this episode Kayse shares why she then decided to give up a stable teaching job and make the leap into full-time entrepreneurship. In her words, she’s doing what she loves now, and it’s been a “wild ride!”

Her first launch in October 2018 generated $127,000 in revenue, selling a $397 product, and quite literally changed her life in the process. Kayse didn’t stop there though, and just a few short months later she made improvements and launched a second time with a $597 product, resulting in another $180,000 in revenue.

You’re going to hear the lessons Kayse has learned along her journey, the strategies she used for both launches, what her biggest fears were, the big mindset shifts she has made since leaving her job, and so much more.

Kayse’s story is so motivating, because she figured out a lot of how to run her business on her own, and she is now showing others how they too can leave their jobs by turning their passions into successful online businesses. She is someone who knows her audience very well, leads with value and the impact she wants to have first, and the financial results followed.

I feel like we just scratched the surface with this conversation, which is why I’ll be excited to bring Kayse back to share more of her experiences with you on the podcast!

Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. How do you listen to this podcast? Is it in the iTunes app, Stitcher, Spotify or maybe iHeart Radio? Do you listen to it at regular speed, or maybe like me you listen to your podcasts at 1.5X speed? I want to know! On the Show Today You’ll Learn:

• How Kayse was able to 10x the revenue from her side hustle in just 3 years, and her early attempts to build an email list

• The way she grew her email list from 13,000 people to 21,000 during her first launch - in just one week using an organic strategy

• The ad strategy Kayse used that resulted in a cost per lead of just over 30 cents on that first launch, with an ad spend of just $10 per day

• How she developed her course, after years of validating it, and why knowing her ideal audience inside-out was so key in her success

• What shifts she made for her second launch in order to attract the right students and cultivate a true sense of community

• The ad strategy she used for the second launch and other things she did differently for it, including using affiliates

Rank #5: The Facebook Ads Hack that’s Generating $22 for every $1 Spent with Daniel Daines-Hutt

Podcast cover
Read more

On today’s episode I’m chatting with Daniel Danies Hutt, a self-confessed “marketing nerd” who’s originally from England and now living in New Zealand. I’m so excited to bringing this conversation with you, and as you’ll hear, I took down a ton of notes from it during our discussion. Daniel has a ton of amazing online marketing strategies to share here with us, as he’s someone who does the work upfront to set himself up for success.

Daniel got a unique start in entrepreneurship when he created a clothing company overnight. Within 5 weeks he was selling his products in 5 retail stores, and you’re going to learn a very cool Facebook ads strategy that he used to have those 5 stores calling him and asking how they could sell his product.

Things went so well that people started asking him to do marketing for them, including paid ads and content writing, and Daniel and his partner now have two blogs, Inbound Ascension and Amp My Content.

In this episode we look at how Daniel has been driving cold traffic to his content and generating $22 for every dollar spent on ads, and why he is using the conversions objective inside Facebook Ads Manager.

He also reveals the feedback loop he’s using to tell how much money he can be spending per lead, and the importance of working with the Facebook algorithm, and not against it.

Daniel explains how his paid ads are benefiting his organic content, and why he feels that his content is converting so well. Daniel does a great job at testing and not giving up on what he’s trying too soon, and you’ll see that he’s playing the long game when it comes to Facebook advertising (and winning)!

• What Daniel’s current daily ad spend is and why he’s not in a hurry to quickly scale it up

• Why lead cost is the most important metric that he measures

• Where SEO fits into his organic and paid strategies

• What are “Hyper Specific Next Step Offers” (and how he’s getting conversion rates of up to 85% using them)

• The strategies he’s using to increase opt-ins and what he avoids in order to limit resistance from potential subscribers

• What his longer form ads consist of and what the targeting looks like for them

• Examples of ad images and headlines that have been extremely effective in catching the attention of his target audience

• His targeting strategies at the ads set level and how when it comes to marketing, we can all learn from the marketers of the past

Rank #6: How to Make Facebook & Instagram Ads Easy...

Facebook and Instagram ads aren’t difficult, but with so much talk about them being overwhelming and scary, I wanted to record this episode for everyone who thinks that they are “hard.” I can speak from experience and say that once you get over this fear, it will allow you to gain traction and scale your business so much more quickly, like it did for my business when I started years ago.

What I’m seeing is that people either aren’t even trying to use Facebook and Instagram ads, or they’re giving up on them too soon, but trust me, they do work if you’re patient and you allow the algorithms to do what they’re supposed to do!

As you’ll hear in this episode, it’s the people who are willing to try running ads and constantly test them (and then test them some more) who are going to win…

What I am doing today is taking the mystery out of what makes successful Facebook and Instagram ads, and this is an episode that you’ll definitely want to go through more than once. Dive in, apply the strategies that I share, take action and start testing, because Facebook and Instagram ads really aren’t “hard!”

Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. At this time we have over 500 5-Star ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, which is great, but I’ve set a goal to get 750 of them by the end of Q3, Sept 30th, 2019. On the Show Today You’ll Learn:
  • The right mindset you need to have and approach you’ll need to have in order to get the most out of your Facebook and Instagram campaigns
  • The importance of doing the upfront work, then following the steps in order, in an “algorithm friendly” way
  • What getting clear on your end goal will allow you to do, and a case study of a student of mine who effectively implemented her ads strategy this way
  • Why you’ll need to understand your target audience, and sub-audiences, and how to begin speaking with them
  • How to find your target audience on Facebook and the tools I recommend to do it
  • Specific questions you can begin to ask yourself that will set your campaigns up for success
  • A walkthrough of the campaign set ups, and what to consider in terms of objective, optimization, budget and more
  • A simple trick that you can use for your messaging (even if you “suck” at writing copy)!
  • It’s hard to do, but why in most case you need to leave your ads alone for the first 3 to 5 days…

Rank #7: How to Find Your Facebook Ads Target Audiences

Podcast cover
Read more

A few shows back I did a Quick Tip episode, which talked about how specific you should be getting when it comes to your Facebook Ads targeting. It raised a lot of questions from listeners who messaged me and asked how to go about finding target audiences in Ads Manager, which is why I wanted to do this show today.

A lot of people think they have to be as targeted as possible, but this is really no longer the case with Facebook. You want to be targeted, but you’re going to want to give more data to Facebook’s algorithm so it’ll find that target audience who are looking to convert, if that’s what your objective is.

In this episode I share how I approach finding target audiences for my Facebook Ads, and I take you through my entire process for doing this.

The key here is that you’ve got to do the work upfront, and that research will give you a clear and holistic understanding of your target audience. If you’re currently managing ads for other people, you’ll have to do the exercise I talk about today for your clients as well.

Like a lot of things on Facebook, targeting best practices is constantly changing, which is another reason while you’ll want to listen to and subscribe to this podcast, as well as be a customer of my other programs and products related to paid advertising.

Take a screenshot of you tuning in to The Art of Paid Traffic, and include it on your Instagram Story, while tagging me, @RickMulready!

On the Show Today You’ll Learn:

• Why defining who your target audience is should be your very first step

• A killer website for getting ideas for your ad copy

• An example of how I would do niche targeting in a specific industry

• A free tool inside Facebook Ads Manager that I use to mine for data when researching my target audience

• My process for building an overarching list of targeting opportunities that is the beginning iterations of potential ad sets

• The number of people I want in my ad sets and why I want a bigger number when my objective is conversions

• The reasons why I usually start with my warm audiences and the order I like to follow

• What to do when you see a good Facebook ad that could be relevant to your business displayed in your newsfeed

Coming up on the next episode I have a Quick Tip where we’re going to be talking about why more leads isn’t always the answer to increasing the amount of revenue in your business, and I’ll take you through an example of what we’re doing here in my business around this concept.

With all the content out there telling you to grow a massive list, build courses, promote on this social platform and that one over there during a launch and….

Rank #10: Case Study: How Blogger/Online Entrepreneur Angie Gensler Generated $200k in 30 Days

Podcast cover
Read more

Today’s guest has been a listener of the podcast for years now, back to when she was working a corporate job, and you’re going to be super-impressed with what she’s accomplished in her business to date.

Angie Gensler has a social media and digital marketing blog, where she focuses on teaching small businesses owners how to grow their business in a simplified way – without all the hustle.

Angie says she was basically a “team of one” as a marketer for a multi-million dollar company before making the leap to entrepreneurship, which was the driving force behind starting her own business to help other solopreneurs.

In this episode she reveals how her business started as a side hustle, but with the intent to do it full-time eventually, and her almost two-year journey to get there.

Angie was able to leave her corporate job in April of 2018, and today she breaks down her November 2018 ad campaign in which she absolutely crushed it! You’ll hear how she generated almost $200,000 in sales on a $60,000 ad spend mainly targeting cold traffic.

She reveals the strategy and mindset behind creating her amazing ads, including one ad that got engagement and social proof that will blow your mind! Angie also talks about how she used upsells, targeted niches and scaled her ads up effectively starting with just $10 test ads and the fears she faced in doing this.

The approach Angie took may not be the one that I’d recommend for everyone starting out, but she tracked her stats, used really good looking ads and planned things out to maximize her success. The results she’s achieved certainly speaks for themselves, and Angie is just getting started.

Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. How do you listen to this podcast? Is it in the iTunes app, Stitcher, Spotify or maybe iHeart Radio? Today we’re covering a topic I get asked a lot about, and that’s 'Do Facebook ads work for brick and mortar businesses?'

Joining me on the show today to share her experience with using Facebook ads for her brick and mortar businesses is Lisa Kuecker.

Rank #13: Back to Basics: Facebook Ads Lookalike Audiences

On today’s episode I wanted to share an interview that I did on Mike Stelzner’s The Social Media Marketing Podcast. I did that episode a few months ago, and it was called How to Use Facebook Lookalike Audiences With Custom Audiences.

As you’ll hear, Mike has a way of asking some really great questions and I thought this interview could bring you a lot of value here on my show. If you’ve not yet listened to Mike’s podcast, definitely check it out because he covers a lot of good stuff on social media marketing, with some amazing guests.

If you’ve been looking to get clarity around lookalike audiences, then you’re going to get a lot from this episode. We cover everything from the basics, to setting them up, and to where lookalike audiences should fit into your overall targeting strategy. I also share some creative ways for sourcing your lookalike audiences, or what base audiences you can create your lookalike audiences from.

  • What lookalike audiences are and what using them will allow marketers to do

  • How accurate they are what we should be considering when targeting location and audience size
  • Ways to get creative in using lookalike audiences, besides just exporting your email list
  • What custom audiences to explore when making lookalike audiences and ways to use the engagement audiences from videos
  • How to target cold audiences effectively – instead of just trying to direct sell to them
  • Examples of how I’ve used these strategies in my own business, why we exclude as many groups as possible, my budget recommendations and more

I’ve been getting some good feedback about the shorter Quick Tip episodes I’ve been airing weekly, and stay tuned because I have another one coming your way later this week!

On today's episode of the Art of Paid Traffic, we’re going to continue our mini-series on metrics and measuring your paid traffic as today, Charlie Vallely and Keith Perhac from a company called SegMetrics are joining me to talk about understanding the value of a lead and using your metrics to really dial in on determining how much should you spend on your paid ads.

Now as you’ll hear as we get into it, the metrics platform they’ve created works with Infusionsoft but if you’re not an Infusionsoft user, not to worry, it’s totally fine. You’re still going to get a ton out of this discussion.

Rank #15: Strategy Session: Basic Sales Funnel Breakdown + Targeting New FB Ads Audiences

Podcast cover
Read more

I haven’t done a strategy session episode in a while, but the feedback I’ve gotten is that you want to hear more of them, so today I’m bringing you a conversation with one of my ROI Club membership students.

Larissa Maclemon serves salon owners in the hair and beauty space through a membership program and a done-for-you service at her site, SalonOwnersCollective.com. Her program teaches members how to market their businesses and it helps take the overwhelm out of the tech side of marketing their salon businesses.

As you’ll hear, she’s currently running warm traffic into a sales funnel, beginning with an opt-in that leads to an email sequence and eventually to a 3-day special offer to get 50% off the first month of her membership program.

In this strategy session, we’re going to be breaking down Larissa’s funnel, which is pretty basic at this time and talking about the need to really know your numbers so that you have an accurate picture of how your funnel is performing. A lot of what we cover today is about building warm audiences to target with Facebook ads, as well as expanding her Facebook ads into cold targeting interests.

  • What problems Larissa is solving for her clients now and why she is looking to pivot her business
  • The struggles she’s having around getting traffic to her lead magnet, and my thoughts about her current funnel
  • Why I think the length of Larissa’s nurture sequence may be causing issues with the overall performance of her funnel
  • What to consider when it comes to opt-ins and a strategy she can use to test an offer right away
  • My suggestions to Larissa for a targeting strategy and why getting too targeted with ads isn’t a good idea
  • How she can use Facebook Audience Insights within Ads Manager and tips for increasing her potential audience size
  • Ways she can test to her Facebook page and my suggestions for pixel use

Coming up on this week’s Quick Tip episode, I’m going to be sharing how you can answer the question, “was this a successful workday or not?” I admit that this is something I’ve struggled with in the past, and I’ll be discussing what I’ve done to overcome it, as well sharing with you what my friends in the mastermind group I’m a part of had to say about this topic.

Today we’re celebrating a huge milestone on The Art of Paid Traffic…

Our 100th episode!

I’m super pumped about this and I want to start by thanking you for listening.

Regardless of whether you’ve been a loyal listener since Episode #1, or if you started tuning in recently, we wouldn’t be recording Episode #100 without your support. So, thank you!

When I was trying to decide exactly how to take things up a notch in celebration of Episode #100, I kept coming back to a topic I’ve been speaking a lot about recently at live events and with my students…

What’s the easiest (& fastest) way to create a high-converting sales funnel?

This is one of my favorite topics -- I love talking about it because I get to share a really cool exercise that when people do it the light bulb totally goes off and I hear -- “ohhh, that was so easy!”

And I’m going to walk you through this same exercise here in episode 100.

You’ll discover, step-by-step, everything that goes into building a high-converting funnel that will generate leads and sales for your business every single day.

I can’t wait to share this with you, so let’s dive into our 100th episode.

On today’s show you’ll learn:

  • Why starting with a game plan is essential for tracking the success of your funnel
  • How to identify every step of your high-converting sales funnel by working backwards from your goal
  • Which parts of your funnel might be optional, depending on the type of traffic you’re targeting
  • The exact numbers you should be tracking within each step of your sales funnel
  • Which metrics to focus on so you can maximize your ROI on FB Ads
  • A checklist of tools, assets and details you need to fully finish your high-converting funnel
  • My favorite quick tips to help you work through the most common roadblocks people experience when optimizing their funnels
  • And a whole lot more…

How to Enter The 100th Episode Contest: For your chance to win a free,100-minute strategy call with me, make a short video (3 minutes or less) telling me…

  • What you do (what’s your niche and business?)
  • Why you’re a good fit for this coaching/strategy session with me
  • What you hope to get out of the session

Once your video is finished, be sure to complete these two steps:

  1. Post the video on YouTube with a description that includes: rickmulready.com The Art of Paid Traffic Podcast Contest
  2. Post the link to your video in the comments below, here on this page, rickmulready.com/100

Those are the ground rules…

Here are a few hints to help you make your entry exceptionally compelling:

  • In your video, I want you to do more than just tell me about yourself. Really show me what you’re about. Get as creative and expressive as you feel comfortable.
  • This isn’t a “technology” contest, though – I’m not going to pick somebody just because they used a lot of fancy video effects.  But if video production is your jam, then go for it! Do whatever helps you express yourself the most.
  • My team and I will select one winner based on your initiative, your willingness to put yourself out there, your enthusiasm, and your ability to communicate clearly what you do and what you want to get out of this time together.

Rank #17: #93: Case Study: 4-Step Facebook Ads Strategy for Local Business Growth

Podcast cover
Read more

Today’s episode of The Art of Paid Traffic is a solo episode where I take you through the exact strategies I would use to grow a local fly fishing guide business with Facebook ads.

You see, I recently went fly fishing in Montana with a guide from Swallowtail Fly Fishing in Bozeman.

As we drove out to the river on the first morning, Ty, my guide, asked what I do for a living.

And, as often happens when I tell people I’m a Facebook ads guy, he naturally asked me how I would recommend he use Facebook ads to grow his guide business.

For the next 20 minutes I shared the exact strategies that I would use to grow his business.  I love breaking people’s business down like this.

It was so fun, that I decided to share these strategies with you here on the podcast.

This episode is the start of a mini-series on AOPT focusing on how local brick & mortar businesses can use Facebook ads to grow their business.

Even if you’re not a local business owner -- maybe you have an online business -- don’t skip these next few episodes because everything we’re talking about is still super relevant to online businesses.

On today’s episode, I share the exact 4-step strategy I would use to grow Swallowtail Fly Fishing with Facebook ads:

  • the Game Plan
  • Targeting
  • the Launch
  • Follow-Up

I also discuss what you MUST have in place before you even consider starting a campaign like this.

This episode is a step-by-step walkthrough of what’s working right now to grow your business with Facebook ads -- whether you’re a local business or not.

Rank #19: Why Mindset and Hard Work Won’t Get You the Results You Want In Your Business (And What Actually Can)

Podcast cover
Read more

Today I’m welcoming back Jim Fortin to the podcast, and like last time, we cover so much in this episode. I received a lot of feedback on the last show with Jim, titled How to Ethically Use Subconscious Selling to Improve Your Marketing and Sales, and today I wanted to take the next step in that conversation.

You’ll hear us talk about the reasons why hard work won’t necessarily give you the results you’re looking for in your business. We also look at how we’re all affected by our habits, and where the results we see really come from.

I’ve been working with Jim for most of this year, and it’s been hugely transformational for myself and my business. In this episode, we discuss how control is really an illusion and the ways it was holding me back in my business, and we also share something that has been another huge gamechanger for me and can be for you too.

This is definitely one of those episodes to go back and listen to a couple of times to really grasp the wisdom that Jim is sharing. I’m hosting a live training with Jim on Thursday, September 13th at 11:30 AM PST called Why Mindset and Hard Work Won’t Get You the Results You Want In Your Business (And What Actually Can), and you can register now at https://rickmulready.com/transformation.

  • Why Jim enjoys the transformational work even more than the influence work that he does
  • How what he teaches can help us grow our businesses
  • The important role of habits, and the way he helped me greatly reduce one particular habit that I previously had
  • How your commitment and self-integrity will relate to the success you see (or don’t see) in business
  • Why we should be working from a place of possibility and not past circumstances
