Marc founded Quortex in 2018, convinced that the business changes in Live TV have to be sustained by a major technological shift that, he believes, the historical actors are unlikely to achieve.   In today’s episode, Marc and I discuss how we can decrease the cost for OTT and always put the priority on the user. He also talks about a theoretical world where The Headend could merge with the CDN. Philip is an internationally recognized photographer and cinematographer and is one of only a handful of photographers to have a solo exhibition at the United Nations.   He most recently produced and hosted a one hour Episode of the Discovery Science Channel’s “Mysteries of the Abandoned” called “Chernobyl’s Deadly Secrets” for which he has the distinction of being the first person to fly a Multi-Rotor Drone in Chernobyl Zone of Exclusion as a part of his work in documenting the aftermath of the nuclear catastrophe. In his free time, Philip is an instrument-rated general aviation pilot and is working towards completing his commercial and multi-engine ratings. In today’s episode, we discuss the implications of OTT and how is it changing the business models for various broadcasting companies, along with the surge in binge watching which has shaped the kind of content the audience wants in today’s scenario. Outside the world of broadcasting, he is deeply involved in the world of 1/8th scale live steam railroading, as well as building an HO empire in his steam-powered man-cave! Alex became interested in the rapidly changing digital news workflows and was lucky enough to meet Fred Fourcher, who took him to Bitcentral. After two years of commuting from London, Alex moved to California in 2010. Since then he has led sales for Bitcentral, Grass Valley and recently joined Avid. Over the last decade, Alex has worked with all the networks, the large broadcast groups, and many pro sports teams and D1 schools. For those of you that have been hiding in captivity, Marco is the President of Grass Valley, a Belden Brand with offices globally. After graduating at Concordia University in Montreal, Marco gained experience at Matrox Electronics from 1994 to 2005. He had a great impact across the whole business, from sales and marketing to product management, applications engineering and customer support. After Matrox Electronics, Marco joined Miranda, firstly as the Vice President of Product Development. After many years of loyalty and progress through the business, he was eventually appointed President of Miranda Technologies. Two years later, after the widely publicised acquisition of the business, he has been appointed President of Grass Valley. Today, the Canadian company is still very much leader in broadcast technology. It continues to innovate in order to provide broadcasters the best equipment to produce and deliver their content. Grass Valley delivers end-to-end television production and content distribution workflows.  I spent almost an hour with Marco, discussing the technology to power the move to 4K. He pointed out the challenges that most broadcasters face when creating and distributing 4K content to the consumer. Welcome! Today, we’re lucky to have John Maxwell Hobbs on board. John is currently a course leader for a brand-new MA in Production Technology at the National Film and Television School. He definitely isn’t new to the industry: before joining the NFTS, he gathered 25 years of experience in working for some of the industry’s most well-known companies. John has previously worked with Ericsson where he led mobile internet development. More recently, he was CTO for the BBC. While he was at BBC Scotland, he launched Europe’s first 21st Century broadcasting facility. He also actively worked to create Scotland’s first new television channel in 50 years. John developed the BBC’s first fully file-based, HD workflow. He also recently conceived and developed BBC Music’s initiative to foster and promote new British songwriters. Speaking of music, it is also an area John is really invested in. Aside from his career in broadcast tech, he has released several CDs and composed for many independent short films. He is still working on music, producing, composing and performing music with worldwide recognized artists. Among them, we can count DJ Spooky, Robert Wilson, Philip Glass. John is passionate about ensuring today's budding Broadcast professionals are equipped with the skills to support all aspects of production technology in live and recorded environments. During the interview, we discussed the lack of Broadcast Engineering Talent in the UK. John tapped into what he believes are some reasons why we are facing a real skills shortage, pointing to some of the challenges with transitioning to new technologies.
