Episode 62: Format Overload

When it
comes time to work out what you and your opponent are playing, Format Overload
can be inevitable! With so many games available to play these days you would
think its easy – its really not and some games actually make it harder! ITC,
ETC, WTC, BRB – all the acronyms could make you go crazy! Then again you are
listening to us so maybe that’s ok!

We chat
about some of the hang ups gamers have around their preferred way of playing
their favourite game(s) be it in their garage, at their local store or at an
event. With no right or wrong answer you can image how this conversation will
go!

It’s
another interesting rabbit hole for this episode, with it quickly becoming
apparent that gamer bias, the resistance to change and – surprisingly – some potentially
cultural defining features all play a part in deciding which format players
prefer and shun. As organisers we also play a part in guiding the community and
its something we are always aware of and try to do fairly.

Just one way to play! Not likely!

What’s your preferred style of play?
Narrative or Matched? Do you attend events based on what the style of event is
or are you happy enough to just get out and roll the dice and have a laugh? We would
love to hear about your experiences and hear your feedback on this topic – we
want to hear from you!

Episode 59: First Blood (2020)

The 5th
annual ‘First Blood’ event is upon us and its time to check out this now
veteran event and see what makes it tick. First Blood started as a hobby and
intro style of event and while we stumbled a little in the last year (or 2) I’m
very pleased to say that 2020 appears to have seen the event return to its
roots.

We take a look at some of the limits imposed at First Blood 2020, talk about the decisions made to get it here and what players can expect from the missions. Players packs and players not reading them also rears its head again – any feedback you have to the questions we raise is welcome! Grab Chapter Approved 2019 to check out the full missions or grab our players pack for the event HERE.

We also had 2 listener contacts to cover. First off – Matthew Brown. Matt got in touch and has been listening to me for a while – since my time on Worlds End Radio! He has started up a youtube channel which – in Matts words – The content is designed to augment a player’s own game by adding story and background. Plenty of narrative stuff, satire and more. Check it out and hit subscribe to help get the word out.

Second contact we got was from Keith in Switzerland. He is heading to his first GT in Prague at the end of February – Hosted by Gamemateu. He’s going super ballsy and taking pre space wolves! Wishing you the best of luck for that Keith!

Have you played our First Blood event
yourself? If not – would you be keen to give it a try? How do you find 4×4
tables? What about smaller points games? We would love to hear about your
experiences and hear your feedback on this topic – we want to hear from you!

Enough reading – go listen! Scroll to

review on iTunes if you grab it there.

Episode 61: The Advantage of Modelling

Modelling
for Advantage… its an episode we have been putting off because we know just how
much of a complex topic this is and one that’s close to the hearts of competitive
gamers in particular. This particular episode topic is specifically around the
game of Warhammer 40,000 and just why now after 25+ years of the game we are
getting so much push back around how people build their models.

We check
out just a few of the examples of what are commonly noted as modelling for
advantage and why those examples don’t close the case for or against the
perceived advantages of these changes. We discuss base sizes as well as heights
of those bases. The heroes of the 41st Millennium certainly don’t carry
around their rubble when they move!

Just one example of modelling we found online of something that’s often considered taboo

We delve
into some of the reasons why we now have these vocal modelling for advantage
claims and how they could be addressed – though we have no such say in the
changes being made let alone applied! True line of sight has a lot to answer
for in this case!

What’s your take on modelling for
advantage? Has our conversation changed your opinion on how people should be
building their models for events? Do you think there should be an overhaul of
the terrain and line of sight rules? We would love to hear about your
experiences and hear your feedback on this topic – we want to hear from you!

Episode 60: I like to move it (terrain!)

The 2020
Las Vegas Open certainly liked to move it – at least on the top 100 tables for
the 40k Champs at least! In case you missed it, the final for the 2019 ITC
season happened across the Australia Day Long Weekend not just for the Oceania
Region (in the form of Cancon) but also the world wide rankings at the Las
Vegas Open.

The early stream table of LVO 2020

We take a look at the complexities of the Las Vegas Open and the decision to have the top 100 tables change terrain each round depending on the deployment type rolled up. Getting players to get to the tables on time is hard enough – let alone with them having to rearrange tables! It seems to have worked with all that said but what a gamble for the organisers on the day! You can check out the Goonhammer review of the LVO2020 HERE.

And what it looked like in the final round!

We chat
about the possibility of adding and updating the terrain for later in 2020 and
a terrain day in March to help standardise the terrain for some of our more competitive
events. Expect to see some new terrain shapes in the near future!

What do you think of standardised
terrain for tournaments? What about moving the terrain based on the deployment
map? How would you feel as a player if you had to move terrain at the start of
the game? We would love to hear about your experiences and hear your feedback
on this topic – we want to hear from you!
