I’ve been craving good conversation with great people and Sean Hancock was one of the first people I reached out to. After catching up last week I thought it made sense to throw a couple of microphones in front of us and record a podcast episode. We met up again today, hit record, and talked for 67 minutes. This episode spotlights my new friend Tanner Martty.  Tanner and I met recently when he stopped by my office to see if he could help me and my business.  We struck up a conversation and after learning more about him, I realized we needed to tell his story.   Tanner has run multiple businesses after cutting his teeth in the cutthroat world of medical software sales.  After working his sales muscle, he turned to literal muscles and entered the performance and health industry.   It’s here where he put on his entrepreneurial hat and really took off when he opened his gym.  This business flourished under his leadership and was humming along at an aggressive pace.  Then the world shut down because of Covid and fewer industries were hit harder than his.  He picked up his family and moved to Idaho where he is starting a new adventure in the publishing space. On this episode I have Tanner Lowry who is the General Manager of D1 Training here in Boise Idaho.  D1 is brand new in town and they bring a much-needed boost to athletic training. Tanner has taken an impressive path to get to where he is.  His journey starts in a small town in Washington state.  From there he went to school at Washington State University (GO COUGS!) where he got involved with athletic training.   It was there he decided to make a career out of it but not the way he anticipated.  We hear a lot about the importance of mentors on the show, and Tanner brings you another story how one conversation with someone you respect, can change the course of your life.  From WSU he got into a Masters program at a school with a rich athletic history, Baylor.  It was at this juncture in his life that the stars aligned and he got a job at D1 Training.  We talk about the history of D1 and its explosive growth.   At his time at the Baylor D1, he was shocked that no one was going to this beautiful state of the art facility.  He played an integral role in growing its membership and he started by taking students from Baylor to D1.  He soon had a vision of helping the reach a much different potential.  His efforts did not go unnoticed.  There was a new GM that came on board and they worked together to grow it into one of the more successful gyms in Waco.  Fast forward a couple of years and Tanner was asked to open the facility in Boise.  He and his new wife and their dog, packed up their car, pointed it north and got to work.   We talk about what it was like getting a facility like this open in a short period of time.  Tanner tells me what it was like to hire 23 people to be fully staffed.  His role from trainer has been greatly reduced due to becoming a GM.  He loves everything about D1 and you can hear it in his words and his voice.  I did ask him what it was like to reduce his role in training, his first love, to management.   He made the transition seamlessly.  Tanner is a man who has a level head, makes smart decisions in a calm and calculated manner and thrives under pressure.  He does miss training full time, but has found a way to stay active in the guy in a way that fullfils that need.  My thanks to Tanner for coming in and sharing his story with us. Juss Jackson

On this episode I have my new friend, Juss Jackson. Juss and I met through a mutual friend, (check out the episode with Tanner Lowry here) and I am so glad we did.   Juss and I talk about a LOT of valuable information.  For starters, he is a coach.  Coaching and running a business have so many commonalities that they are basically the same thing.  We hit on topics including motivation, patience, winning and goals.  All of this translates seamlessly to running a business especially if you have employees.   Juss was also in sales at the time.  You know if I am going to be in a room with a salesperson, we are going to get into it.   Good salespeople are hard to come by.  Over time, and If you have been listening to the show, sales is almost a universal language you just have to learn to talk.  The concepts and skills are there for you to learn.  You just have to be willing to put in the work and listen to people like Juss to be successful.    Lastly we talk about his non profit, 4 the Ability.  You can just hear it in his voice how important this cause is for him.  This non profit is to help special needs kids get ready to acclimate to high school, by getting them involved in the athletic program at an earlier age. This way, when it’s time for them at attend, they have made friends, they know coaches and teachers, and there is a comfort level there they wouldn’t have had without 4TA. On this episode, I sit down with the CEO of ICON Credit Union, Connie Miller.  Connie is a native Idahoan and has been in the Credit Union business since 1994.   in 1997 Connie became the VP of finance for then Idahi CU, now ICON , and became their CEO in 2008. I was excited to ask her what a CEO does. We have all heard the title and may be aware of some of their duties.  I don’t think I have ever had it really explained to me so I had to ask.  She became CEO of a credit union in 2008.  Think about that.  The entire economy is swan diving off of a cliff and she was just given the reins of a financial institution.  It sounds like she handled it beautifully.  She had the right people’s interests at heart (her members) and lead with integrity through a challenging time.   Connie works closely with many small business owners.  We talk about what she looks for before lending them money.   Connie also gave a talk last winter about why business owners get stuck.  I enjoyed getting into this part of the conversation because we have all been stuck in one way or another.   Culture and team building are two things that are very important to her.  Connie tells me how she keeps the message consistent from the top of an organization to the bottom.  I also asked her how she gets the most out of employees. On this episode, I have Justin Foster and I think you’re in for a real treat. Justin is co-owner and co-founder or Root and River. Justin is someone I have had my eye on as a guest for quite some time.   The core of this conversation is about brand.   Brand is an interesting seemingly ambiguous term.  You will learn more about brand in this episode than you have learned about brand in the past 5 years.  Brand isn’t your logo or your business card or your website. Brand should be a spiritual experience and it’s something that deserves your focussed time and attention.  It’s the feeling your customers get when they think about your company or walk into your shop.  We discuss what all of that means and how Justin coaches leaders and teams to putting brand in the spotlight.  The ultimate goal of working with Root and River is to create a flywheel for word of mouth advertising.  This is the dream of every business.  To have your phone ring or email box fill up with orders.  How do they teach you to do this?  You have to be different because sameness is death.  But it’s something you can’t fake.   In this day and age where there are 5,000,000,000 cell phone cameras on the planet, we are living in the first age of transparency.  The truth of you and your brand will be exposed one way or another.  Hopefully that serves you well because you are an awesome boss who cares about their employees and their customers. Nate Morris

On this episode I have the founder and owner of RestoClean. I met Nate Morris recently after his marketer stopped by my office. I had such a good experience with her, I actually reached out to her to thank her for how she was taking care of our shared clients. She told me a little about Nate and I realized that I had to meet him and have him on the podcast.  Nate is one of those entrepreneurs that has a unique mix of hard to find qualities.  He is driven, hard working, empathetic, a life long learner, business savvy and he understands his shortcomings.  It’s no wonder that his business is growing at the pace it is. We talk about how he started off as a one man carpet cleaning company and turned it into a 36 man full blown restoration company. That doesn’t happen overnight and we discuss what his path has been like so far. He knew the profit margins were greater in restoration and he also enjoyed the work.  Nate is really good with data and analysis.  He gives some great advice on how to dive into the data that is important.  He discusses how to read it, what to look for and how to build systems and optimize your business. One of my favorite parts of this episode is when he shares a story of when he got a call at 4:30am. It was for a water loss in student housing that was affecting dozens of units covering 5 stories. He took the job and told the people involved that he can get this 20 day job done in 10 days. They thought he was nuts. You can listen to how he kept his word and got it done. It’s quite impressive. We talk marketing too.  Nate is really sharp when it comes to Google Ad words.  He talks about how he learned to utilize this strategy and how he uses it proficiently to get in front of new clients.   Another thing that he did that was smart, was he on-boarded a cabinet maker into his business to cut out the middle man.  This is very unique for his industry. Most restoration companies will sub this work out.  Nate’s company has figured out a way to infuse a ton of value for his clients and the insurance companies that he works with to give a solid customer experience. On this episode I have the founder and owner of RestoClean. I met Nate Morris recently after his marketer stopped by my office. I had such a good experience with her, I actually reached out to her to thank her for how she was taking care of our shared clients. She told me a little about Nate and I realized that I had to meet him and have him on the podcast. Nate is one of those entrepreneurs that has a unique mix of hard to find qualities. He is driven, hard working, empathetic, a life long learner, business savvy and he understands his shortcomings. It’s no wonder that his business is growing at the pace it is. We talk about how he started off as a one man carpet cleaning company and turned it into a 36 man full blown restoration company. That doesn’t happen overnight and we discuss what his path has been like so far. He knew the profit margins were greater in restoration and he also enjoyed the work. Nate is really good with data and analysis. He gives some great advice on how to dive into the data that is important. He discusses how to read it, what to look for and how to build systems and optimize your business. One of my favorite parts of this episode is when he shares a story of when he got a call at 4:30am. It was for a water loss in student housing that was affecting dozens of units covering 5 stories. He took the job and told the people involved that he can get this 20 day job done in 10 days. They thought he was nuts. You can listen to how he kept his word and got it done. It’s quite impressive. We talk marketing too. Nate is really sharp when it comes to Google Ad words. He talks about how he learned to utilize this strategy and how he uses it proficiently to get in front of new clients. Another thing that he did that was smart, was he on-boarded a cabinet maker into his business to cut out the middle man. This is very unique for his industry. Most restoration companies will sub this work out. Nate’s company has figured out a way to infuse a ton of value for his clients and the insurance companies that he works with to give a solid customer experience. This episode is a little different.  It actually has a little bit of my business.  I did a swapcast with Megan Bryant and we interviewed each other at the same time for our podcasts. Megan’s show is called I Hardly Know Her and she has been loving the podcast space since she entered it earlier this summer.  We covered a lot in this show.  Megan is a speaker, an improv trainer, a business coach, a comedian, and a bestselling author.  She was also voted Boise’s 2019 best comedian. I had to ask her about branding and what she wants people to think of when they hear her name.  With all that she offers, I was curious if she was leaning in any sort of direction.   We talk about “value”.  How do we determine our worth?  I asked her how she sets her pricing for what she offers.  Megan has been doing her own thing for long enough now that she has built up her brand and her reputation.  I wondered what that means for the amount of pro bono work she accepts.  How has her pricing changed now that she has become more of an expert in her field? We also talk about what it means to give worth to one another.  Supporting local business is very important to each of us.  It is baked into our DNA.  We discuss why that is so important and trade ways in which we have supported local businesses over the years. This episode is a special 2 for 1! Rhea Allen who co-founded and co-owns Peppershock Media asked me to be on her podcast- Marketing Expedition.  We decided to do a swapcast and interview each other at the same time.  This is a format I am really starting to enjoy. I think it gives a little more value to the listener.  It also allows me to play a different role which is a nice change of pace Rhea and her husband Drew formed Peppershock Media back in 2003 after working in the Television News world and immediately after they got married. They are currently an agency where they combine an ad agency with in-house video production and graphic design and digital work.  Now remember they founded in 2003 before social media was even a thing.  We discuss the evolution of their business over the next 16 years. We discuss what it is like to stay ahead of the curve of such a fast-moving industry.  Turns out, Rhea is a true student of her industry which is exactly what I would want, when looking for a marketing company.   Marketing today is so much more sophisticated today with the ability to target specific markets and through a myriad of new channels.  I ask her how she helps businesses help get in front of people.  Rhea says that testing testing and more testing is the best way to fine-tune your marketing.   We talk about a time she had to fire a client.  A huge client.  A client that if fired, would change the scope of her business.  It’s a quiet blessing to be able to do such a thing.  The reason behind it was because this client wasn’t a good fit.  This is a nice way of saying that this client didn’t treat her or her employees kindly.  They needed to make a challenging decision and it was the proper decision in the long run. Andrew Randall

On this episode I have one of my favorite people, Andrew Randall.  Andrew and his wife Shayna own 5 Dutch Bros. locations and I have had the honor of knowing them for a decade now.  I asked Andrew to be on the show again because they have recently opened a delightful new restaurant in Nampa called Mesa. They run a small coffee empire with these 5 locations and over 300 employees.  As if that wasn’t enough, they decided to take on the challenge of opening a business in an industry that is very tough to be successful in.  I asked him what those conversations we like when it came to opening a restaurant.  Ultimately they wanted to fill a need that their community didn’t have.  They also wanted to infuse some fresh life in a downtown that is in need of some new energy.   Andrew is a student of life and I have always enjoyed talking business with him.  We talk about his management and leadership style.  You will want to hear his approach to these subjects.  His goal ultimately is to help people become better people.   I asked him what has allowed them the freedom to take on a business like this.  He told me it’s the people have been installed in upper management in the Dutch Bros. world.  They do such great work, that Shayna and Andrew can manage at a higher level.  They can continue to grow and innovate.  He tells me how Mesa grew from idea to reality in about a year.  Their approach is so smart. Over the course of the last ten years, they have connected and aligned with very smart people.   You will hear Andrew talk about all of the different people who helped teach and mentor them through this process.  The Randall’s have a LOT of knowledge about running a successful business but knew little about the ins and outs of running a restaurant.  They use the “It takes a village to grow a business” model.   Andrew has always been on the front lines of technology advances and we chat about that.  They are using a brand new form of payment system.  He told me his goal was for the food to be “Instagram” ready.  I asked him how he communicates with all of the people he needs to communicate with and his answer cracked me up.   “Andrew, how do you communicate with all of these people?  Do you text them?  Email them?  Run meetings?” “I don’t email bro”.  I love hearing the things that they are doing that are ahead of the mainstream.  He’s really a visionary.   We talk about how important customer experience is for a restaurant.  This seems obvious, but listening to the little details that Andrew has deployed for Mesa are why there is a line out the door on a regular basis.   Andrew and Shayna have two children as well (currently ages 9 and 6).  They both entered the picture in the middle of this crazy entrepreneurial journey they are on. We talked about they want his children to be learning on this path. Natalie Lemas

Welcome to season 7 of the None of my Business podcast!  To kick things off, I have a very special guest, my new friend Natalie Lemas Hernandez.   Natalie has a strong entrepreneurial spirit coupled with a constant thirst to always be learning.  This is a potent cocktail for success.  I asked her where her leadership qualities came from. She told me a story about when she was a teenager and was presented an opportunity to do the right thing.  This was in the middle of when she was reading a book called 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.   She made a tough decision in the moment and sought some help for a friend through her mom.  This led to the two of them starting a leadership program for teens.  Incredible right? She went on to study marketing in college and after graduating Natalie found herself at the age of 23 in charge of 3 different departments and managing 60 people at a Macy’s.  She tells the story of a woman more than twice her age approaching her, on her FIRST DAY,  putting both hands on her cheeks and saying, “Aw, are you our new manager?” Let’s just say, by the end of her tenure (6 months) at Macys all three of her departments were number one in her district.  She climbed the top of the Macy’s mountain and went out on top.  Natalie knew her future wasn’t in retail and she moved to Idaho to work in the property management business her parents had built.   She started working in the business after taking a pay cut after feeling a call to come home.  At age 24 she was tasked with being part of the team taking over the business due to some health concerns with her mom.   She noticed pretty quickly that the business that her mom intended to build, was successful, but not fully optimized.  They were managing houses of people that weren’t their ideal client. Because of that, employees weren’t happy, they weren’t as profitable as they could be, and they were putting out more fires than celebrating wins.  We talk about what changes were implemented to build the business that was intended to be built.  They were able to be more choosy with their clients.  The potential clients weren’t interviewing them to use as a property manager, it was the other way around.   Now they have taken on larger clients and they could really give their clients the attention they deserve.  The business really grew from there.  Soon after, Natalie and her husband Greg had a conversation about buying the business which they did in 2017.   We talk about what the conversations were like behind that decision and they were loaded with fear.  But good fear.  Natalie never doubted making the business work.  Everything that she had achieved up to that point, gave her the confidence to be successful.   She has continued to grow the business through her willingness to find mentors, her willingness to learn and her drive to be the best she can be. This episode features Shaun Buck who is the founder and owner of The Newsletter Pro.  Shaun’s story is really impressive.  He has had the entrepreneurial spirit in him since he was a teenager and has owned numerous companies in his life.  His current business, was recently named #120 on INC Magazine’s top 500 fastest growing companies.   His business may seem old school, but it is anything but.  The Newsletter Pro mails newsletters for companies to help with retention and referrals.  While the trend has been evolving and sprinting towards digital, Shaun believed this tried and true strategy is relevant and boy was he right.  My favorite statistic from this interview:  Average number of emails people get every day= 147.  Average number of pieces of mail you get every day = 3.96.   Shaun also recently had the unique opportunity to co-author a book with his mentor, Dan Kennedy.  We chat about what that was like.  Congratulations to all of your success Shaun and thanks for sharing your story with us. Have you ever sat down with a friend, and over a few beers uttered the phrase, “We should totally do that and go into business!”  If so, you are not alone.  Thing is, 99% of those business thoughts and idea’s die before the beer is even gone.  My guest on this episode, is Krisjan Hiner and he and his partner Will followed through on their conversation and now are running a successful Landscape Architecture firm named Stack Rock Group.   I love their story.  From how it started, to working out of a spare bedroom, to understanding each others strengths and weaknesses in order to grow the business without getting in each others way.  Partnerships are hard.  Partnerships with close friends are a big risk and it is not unlike a marriage.  Everything can be bright and rosy in the beginning but people’s true colors start coming out after the honeymoon period.  We cover a lot of ground in this podcast.  Krisjan has been in the trenches in sales and marketing for over ten years.  He has done the hard work that most “marketers” aren’t willing to do.  He shares some great insight and creative strategies that you NEED to hear. We talk about how and why his partnership is successful.  They have done a great job compartmentalizing their job duties and are truly experts at what they do inside of those duties. Troy Korsgaden

This is a very special episode for me.  I had an opportunity to sit down with an industry giant, a 35 year expert in the field of insurance, an award-winning agency owner, consultant, speaker, author, my friend, and mentor Troy Korsgaden. This episode is actually part one of a two-part interview that I did with Troy.  Find the second part in my other podcast, Simply Explaining Insurance.    In this first part, we talk about his path to becoming an agency owner.  We discuss how he ran a successful agency in his first 7 years. Something was telling Troy it could be better.  I got the sense he felt underwhelmed.   Troy then tells me the story of how a phone call from his dentist changed his life.   He doubled the size of his agency in 18 months and soon everyone in the industry knew him as just “Troy”.  He exited his agency (which his sisters still run to this day) and entered the consulting world.   The core of Troy’s transformation was around building thoughtful systems and then delegating them to professional staff.  This includes teaching them tested scripts on how to handle common objections.  It also includes saying the right things to the right people at the right time. These are simple, easy to understand, measurable tasks.  But not easy.  These take time, practice and real conviction to implement properly. We discuss what it means to thoughtfully onboard technology.  How much is too much?  Troy believes that human touch is always going to be important.   I ask him what is the simplest thing we can do to move the needle?  Again, he gives you an actionable measurable answer.  See 4 people every day. Joe Pattee

On this episode, I brought in an old friend, Joe Pattee.  Joe is currently the branch manager of Guild Mortgage in Boise.  He and I entered our careers in the same era and have  sort of grown up professionally.  I enjoyed the part of our conversation when he accepted his role as a loan originator and soon realized that he just accepted a sales job.  For one reason or another the full scope of the job wasn’t properly portrayed to him and he was caught off balance. Good news is, the stars aligned in this case and Joe not only loved being in sales but thrived. I don’t think people fully understand how hard sales is.  It is one of those skills that people believe they can do, but when their feet are held to the fire, they will let them burn instead of ask for the sale.  Joe has the DNA to be great at sales along with a voracious appetite for  learning.  These two things are the foundation of becoming great in sales.      We go on to talk about what it like transitioning from sales to training sales.  Just because one can sell doesn’t mean one can teach sales.  Joe made the transition very naturally and now has a team of 7 loan officers that he teaches, motivates and encourages. Joe is a creature of habit, so we discuss what his routine is like.  This is something that I am always trying to improve on and love to engage people who are farther along that me in this area. He talks about the familiarity of routine and how important it is to have a sense of real direction EVERY WEEK. This podcast is with Tricia Anderson who owns The Bodacious Pig right here in Eagle Idaho.  I happen to work about 80 feet from this restaurant and it is one of our favorites (try the pulled pork nachos or tri tip sandwich/pig style).  This is actually her second restaurant after successfully running a BBQ restaurant in California. We discuss how she got into the industry and how tough the restaurant industry really is.  We discuss what is more important; location, food or service.  Tricia and her husband Joel had an important epiphany recently.  Joel had always wanted to be a teacher and hadn’t yet fulfilled that dream.  After helping run two restaurants and having a family, he went back to school and is now a full time teacher.  Thank you so much to Tricia for coming in and sharing her story with me. On this episode, I have Tazz Weatherly, owner and founder of Real Estate by Tazz.  I reached out to Tazz after seeing her content again and again and again on Linkedin.  It was inescapable.   This was intriguing to me because I am interested in small business owners and content creation, so I reached out and invited her to tell her story.  Tazz started her first business when she started privately coaching girls softball players.  It was a game she played in college, a game she loved and she saw an opportunity in the market. This as a short-lived venture and we talk about what she learned during that period of time.   From there, she entered the fast-paced world of sales. She sold investment accounting software and this is where her love of sales was exposed.  We talk about why she loves sales. I am always curious to hear this answer because sales is extremely hard and few people can do it well.  All of this leads to her becoming a realtor and starting her current business.  We talk about why she got into the real estate and how she decided to start doing something different in marketing her business.  She started creating content. The content creation journey is interesting because it is always a work in progress. Everyone is bad at it in the beginning.   That is the reason most people don’t even start.  The fear of looking like a fool.  If you have the intestinal fortitude to get over that fear and make your mistakes and refine this craft, it can be very powerful.  This is what Tazz has done. On this episode, I have Tazz Weatherly, owner and founder of Real Estate by Tazz. I reached out to Tazz after seeing her content again and again and again on Linkedin. It was inescapable. This was intriguing to me because I am interested in small business owners and content creation, so I reached out and invited her to tell her story. Tazz started her first business when she started privately coaching girls softball players. It was a game she played in college, a game she loved and she saw an opportunity in the market. This as a short-lived venture and we talk about what she learned during that period of time. From there, she entered the fast-paced world of sales. She sold investment accounting software and this is where her love of sales was exposed. We talk about why she loves sales. I am always curious to hear this answer because sales is extremely hard and few people can do it well. All of this leads to her becoming a realtor and starting her current business. We talk about why she got into the real estate and how she decided to start doing something different in marketing her business. She started creating content. The content creation journey is interesting because it is always a work in progress. Everyone is bad at it in the beginning. That is the reason most people don’t even start. The fear of looking like a fool. If you have the intestinal fortitude to get over that fear and make your mistakes and refine this craft, it can be very powerful. This is what Tazz has done. Megan Ramos

On this episode I welcome on Dr. Clay and Megan Ramos.  They own and operate Foundation Chiropractic in Meridian Idaho.  I always enjoy having a husband and wife team on as it is a unique and challenging endeavor to run a business together.  Dr. Clay discovered that he wanted to be a chiropractor after being injured playing college football for Weber State.  Upon discovering this, they moved to Davenport Iowa, the Mecca where chiropractic was started.  The program was a little over 3 years long and we discuss what it was like going through that. They came across a very important resource during this time.  An organization called AMP.  AMP is a program to help chiropractors go from student to full blown business owners.  It proved to be an invaluable resource for them and they are still connected today.    We talk about their decision to open their own location verses working in an existing location and how they decided to make their home here in Idaho. Opening a business is a LOT of work.  We discuss everything they had to do to get ready.  Everything from finding a space, doing a buildout, furnishing it with the proper equipment and more.  What is crucial during this time before opening is marketing.  They did a great job marketing their new business for 4-5 months before opening their doors.   What they did really worked because they were packed their first week.  We  go on to discuss what their first year has been like.  The first year of running your own business is a roller coaster.  It is full of highs and lows.  It is full of small victories and unforeseen defeats. We then go on to discuss what it is like to be a patient at Foundation Chiropractor and how they set themselves apart. On this episode, I have Stoney Foster who is a financial advisor for Hall and Associates here in Eagle Idaho. I really got interested in Stoney’s story when I found out he sold his chiropractic business of 23 years and went into Financial Advising.  There is a lot to unpack there.   We talked about how he got into chiropractic and what it was like building that business up.  I am always interested in what goes into selling a business.  I don’t necessarily mean the mechanics of putting a business up for sale but also the emotional and mental toll it takes to sell something you have built over the last two decades.   Stoney decided that essentially, running his own chiropractic business was too much from a scheduling standpoint.  He wanted more freedom and more time with his family.   It’s one of the main reasons we get into business for ourselves in the first place.  Also seeing 40-60 patients a day was taking a toll on his physically.    His financial advisor at the time got in his ear and told Stoney that he should consider becoming a financial advisor and that is the direction he went.   He just entered his third year in the business and we chat about what the first few have been like.  Becoming a financial advisor isn’t necessarily hard to do. It falls in the camp of other sales jobs like insurance agent, realtor, or mortgage broker.   Make no bones about it, these jobs are very very hard to succeed in.  You have to have a deep well of patience and the discipline to be almost maniacally self-directed.     Stoney tells me how he had a pretty big head start for two reasons.  1.  He ran his own business for 23 years and he has that well of experience to draw from.  2.  He has a larger natural client base of people who trusted him.    The challenge for him now, like everyone else, is how to get in front of people when your natural market has been exhausted. On this episode, I have Nick Aldinger who is the co-owner of Idaho Business League (IBL) Events.  Nick is a native Idahoan who after college moved away.  But like many others, the pull of Idaho was too great and he came home. IBL Events is an organization that helps businesses and consumers at the same time by putting on large events and shows.  For example, they put on the Home and Remodel Show and the Idaho Business and Technology show.  You may have even been to a few of these yourself.  Nick has a background in running his own business which gives him invaluable experience for what he currently does.  He started up a tech company in the early 2000’s and then went into real estate in 2005.  We talk about what he learned from both of these experiences.   Enter the great recession.  After Nick decided he didn’t want to ride that horrific wave, his network saved him and helped him get stable employment at Micron.  He worked at Micron for about 9 years when another opportunity presented itself.    In 2013, Nick and his wife Anna Marie bought the event side of the IBL.   We talked about the conversations they had before buying a business.   There is a lot to consider and there will always be some sort of risk.  It was interesting to hear about their path to this business. After a few years, they both decided to work on the business full time.  We go on to talk about what it has been like taking over this business and running it full time.   Nick and I also discuss what business owners should do to prepare to work a show like this.   Working a show like this is part art and part science.  You want to draw people to your booth without scaring them.  You want to make a real connection in about 2.5 minutes and then hope that turns into a sale.  As awkward as working a booth at a show can feel, it’s really the easy part.  It’s the follow up after the show, that many business owners shockingly fall flat on.  I had a lot of fun chatting with Nick.  He is well spoken and gives very thoughtful answers. I had the opportunity to sit down with Greg Schweitzer who founded and owns Catalyst Transformation Institute.  Greg is a catalyst.  He will point you towards being more alive, finding fulfillment, living with purpose and rising to greatness.  We really had a great conversation about a number of important topics.  We discussed his path to becoming an expert in his field.   He is a voracious learner which I really appreciate.  Not only that, he will learn and then help put what was learned into practice.  Something many of us could do better.  Greg told a great personal story about when he hit bottom.  It was deep into the recession.  They had filed bankruptcy.  They lost their home.  He was questioning a lot of things when suddenly, his young children loudly ran into the room, dressed like him and professed they wanted to be just like him.  It just broke him and it sent him on a mission to dig his family out of this hole. Fast forward a few years and Greg has become an expert in helping others as a Master Practitioner in Neurolinguistic Programming and Certified Trainer.   We talk about what are some of the most common things that business owners need to fix.  He boils this down to a number of things. 1. How to be able to make and keep your money.  2.  People’s ability to remain passionate.  3. Having time to enjoy things you want to enjoy.   How many business owners are actually doing what they promised themselves they would do?  Business owners open businesses and say they will work their own schedule and be more flexible.  The problem is, they don’t know how or are too afraid to step away for one day.
