010: Kelly Murray & Amber Price — Hush Little Baby - Sleep Training vs. Co-Sleeping

You know what the most trite advice is about babies and sleep? “Honey, sleep when the baby sleeps!” It makes me think of a meme I came across on Instagram that said, “Sure. And I’ll do laundry when my baby does laundry and wash bottles when my baby washes bottles.” When the baby sleeps, that may be our only window of time to get to the umpteen things we have to do.  One of the most polarizing and confusing topics for a new mom is “To sleep train or not.” There are some parents who are die-hard believers in the Ferber method and others who prefer co-sleeping, and others who fall somewhere in between. First and foremost, there is no right or wrong method. You do what is right for your baby and your family and your schedule. What I aim to provide you with is knowledge. If you’re a mom who is unsure what to do to help your baby go to sleep and sleep well, this is the episode for you. My goal is to keep things as objective as possible, (you know I am a journalist, it’s how my thinking is hardwired), so I want to present to you two different perspectives so that you come out of this more aware and self-assured on how to handle sleep when it comes to you and your baby or babies. On today’s episode, I am joined by Kelly Murray, a certified sleep consultant and Amber Price, MD, a pediatrician and breastfeeding consultant, who lives and teaches child-led parenting. 014: Sue Groner — Parenting with Sanity and Joy - 101 Simple Strategies

In my opinion, the most challenging facet to being a parent is wondering if you are making good decisions for your kids. Should I sleep train or not? How much screen time? Should I opt for a nanny or daycare? When are we doing away with bottles? When to start potty training? And these small problems evolve when we have tweens and adolescents who are faced with peer pressure, bullying, self esteem issues, keeping up with competitive academic environments, honing in on their passions, and being socially accepted.  Sue Groner is founder of the Parenting Mentor, which provides on-site and virtual sessions for parents of toddlers through teens. As a University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School graduate and a former advertising executive, Groner uses her training in creative problem solving with her CLEARR methodology to help parents foster and maintain a more fulfilling and stress-free experience while in the trenches of day-to-day children. She lives in New York with her husband and two children.  “One of the most frustrating aspects of parenting is that there is no school for it. You learn by doing.” -Dr. Elliot Barsh, Pediatrician “Sue Groner’s parenting tips provide immediate access to wise and loving guidance that can help when navigating the many day to day challenges we encounter when raising children. 016: Brooke Allen & Heather Lovato — Finding Your Rhythm: Strategies for Mompreneurs

Brooke reflects on what it means to “have it all.” It took a dedicated husband, a sweet baby boy, a professional transition (and big leap of faith) to realize she is creating a life she loves. That doesn’t mean she has it 100% together - far from it on most days - but through the ups and downs she is finding her footing as a wife, a mother and a business owner. Brooke loves spending time with her family, a glass of red wine with her girls (or alone), snuggles with her 2 year old boy and has a weird obsession with finding information online (friends affectionately call her “cyberstalker”). No one is safe but your secrets are safe with her. Brooke is anxious yet excited to share her world with you. Overcoming the fear of “why will people care” and letting her guard down is already the best part of this journey. When your dreams come true you think you’d have it all figured out, right? Heather started a successful conscious creative agency called clover PR over 6 years ago, married the man of her dreams and then they had the cutest, chunkiest, delicious little boy... but nothing is quite figured out. Some days she is acing life, living out her perfect Pinterest board fantasies. Other days if everyone is alive and mostly happy it’s a win. So, naturally adding a new project to the mix made total sense, but in all honestly she thrives most when her cup runs a little over. Heather loves being creative, coffee + morning walks with her family, attending anything with a theme and sarcasm is her true love language. She has always dreamed of sharing her thoughts with the masses one day -- even if only for her own therapy. As most creative visions begin, Sōlspace was an idea floating around her head for a while (like 8+ years when Brooke + Heather did their first photoshoot for their “blog”), so she’s pretty excited to get this brain baby out there. #Ding #Itisbaked   Meet My Guest: WEBSITE: SoloSpace.co INSTAGRAM: @solospace.co FACEBOOK: @solospaceco PODCAST: A Space for Sol Show Notes: 01:40 - Introductions 06:20 - Cofounding history 14:56 - Starting the business out of a need you feel personal about 18:33 - Bringing people together 21:40 - "If you're trying to conquer the world, you're going to need help" 22:11 - Time blocking 29:40 - Organization 38:59 - Defining your non-negotiables 44:41 - Mom Haul 47:07 - Quote of the day Mom Haul: AMAZON: Light Reflecting Glasses AMAZON: Lunya Sleep Mask AMAZON: MomWasher Perineal Recovery After Bath AMAZON: Dermoplast Spray

We sacrifice so much for our children, but despite that, we still feel like we're not doing enough. For some, they feel guilty for not being able to take care of their children because they're working, and for others, they long to be out in the workforce because they feel they're homebound with their kids too much. Either way, it's a difficult conundrum to grapple with all the time. On this episode, I am joined by Dr. Terri Bacow, PhD, who is a clinical psychologist on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. She has deep expertise in using skills-based therapies to treat anxiety, depression, and related disorders, including postpartum depression and anxiety. 020: Meenal Lele — How to Protect Your Child From Food Allergies

Soon after Meenal Lele's first child was diagnosed with multiple food allergies, new research upended decades of allergy advice. The LEAP study found that consistently adding allergenic foods beginning at four months of age could drastically reduce the rate of developing food allergies. The American Academy of Pediatrics subsequently began recommending that parents give allergenic foods to their babies early and often. As Meenal struggled to prepare allergens three times a week for her second child, she realized how hard it was to mix nuts into baby food without exposing his older brother or contaminating the blender. There had to be a better way! She took my background in chemical engineering and worked with food scientists to develop a solution. Lil Mixins is specially prepared to blend smoothly into breastmilk, formula, or baby foods, so it’s simple to give to infants. They use the best quality ingredients and no additives or sweeteners – the same way you would make it yourself, but without the mess. And they've made it so one jar of each product will last from early infancy until your baby can start to eat whole foods. 048: Lynn Power — Goodbye Bad Hair Days

One of the best byproducts of pregnancy are having the most thick and luscious hair of your life. Personally, my hair grew all the way down to my waist and it was so shiny and healthy. During pregnancy, there is an increase in the level of estrogen hormones in your body. Estrogen causes hair to remain in a growing phase and stimulates the growth of your hair. But, as we all know, all good things must come to an end, so during postpartum and your 4th trimester, you may likely encounter hair loss where your body stabilizes and returns to what your growth cycle was all along. Today’s episode is all about hair - how we can take care of it and maintain it to be healthy, pregnant or not. Meet My Guest: WEBSITE: LoveMasami.com TWITTER: @LynnPowered LINKEDIN: Lynn Power

046: Parul Somani — Resilience in the Face of Health Challenges

More than the F word, it’s the C word that scares so many of us, especially women who have a history of cancer in their family. As mothers, we try to be hyper aware of the carcinogens all around us - in the environment and nutrition - and try to steer clear of them to protect our kids. But when you’re predisposed, it’s a situation that often feels helpless because there’s nothing you could have done to prevent it. Cancer affects the world population in such an invasive way - we all know at least one person who is currently fighting cancer, is a survivor, or has passed away. Today’s episode is about the measures we can take to prevent ourselves from becoming a statistic -- how to screen for breast cancer and how to deal with it if you do happen to be diagnosed or have a friend or family member who is. Parul is a healthcare executive and cancer survivor turned inspirational speaker championing health, resilience, and a positive mindset. As the Founder & CEO of Silver Linings, Parul combines her experiences as a young working mother diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 30s, a caregiver who transformed her parents' lives with her patient advocacy, and a businesswoman with 15+ years of experience in management consulting and executive roles in consumer, technology, and healthcare companies. Parul's mission is to help improve the state of healthcare by sharing her experiences, and inspiring others to live a healthy, thankful, and fulfilling life. She has shared her personal story through her cancer blog that's been read in ~80 countries, films on survivorship and mindset, TV and radio segments, podcast interviews, and public speaking engagements. Prior to becoming a professional speaker, Parul was Head of Global B2B and B2B2C Marketing at Color Genomics, where she built and led the team responsible for the entire sales and customer success marketing funnel for Color’s enterprise and clinical channels. Before that, as VP of Growth for Weddington Way, Parul led the vertical integration and retail growth strategies that led to the company's acquisition by Gap Inc. As a management consultant at Bain & Company, Parul led teams advising Fortune 500 companies and private equity firms, and helped launch Bain's first consulting office in India. Parul currently serves on the advisory board for Stanford's Health Communication Initiative and early stage start-ups. Parul holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a Minor in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Parul and I are connected through our mutual friend Payal Kadakia Pujji. Payal is the founder of ClassPass which is the first female led start-up to hit unicorn status this year and Creative Director Sa Dance Company - Parul and I are members. I love that we are bonded by our passion for Indian dance. 045: Galit Laibow, Greg Fleishman, and Sarah Michelle Gellar — Stirring the Pot with Junk-Free Sweet Treats

Today’s episode is with the founders of Foodstirs. Foodstirs is an American cooking and lifestyle company that produces baking kits, mixes and grab and go sweet snacks for sale online, by subscription, and in select stores like Whole Foods. All products are organic, non-GMO ingredients and are intended to be "kid-friendly" to prepare. Foodstirs Junk-Free Bakery was founded by Galit Laibow, Greg Fleishman, and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Santa Monica, California in 2014. Galit first came up with the idea and showed her baking kits to other parents (including Sarah Michelle) at her children's school, which spurred her to become a co-founder. The two then presented the idea to Greg, which encouraged him to join as co-founder/President and Co-CEO. These three parents are determined to challenge the status quo and create better food experiences for everyone and are reinventing the multibillion dollar fresh baked goods food category. Over the years, Galit and the team have increased Foodstirs’ sales by more than 10 times and has successfully landed the brand’s USDA Organic baking mixes in more than 7,500 natural, conventional and big box retailers across the U.S. They say, “If you can’t pronounce it, we’re not making it. Because the only place for junk is in the drawer. When ingredients are awesome and steps are simple, we can create sweet experiences. Together we can all be Foodstirs.” Meet My Guests: WEBSITE: Foodstirs.com INSTAGRAM: @galitlaibow INSTAGRAM: @Foodstirs TWITTER: @Foodstirs FACEBOOK: /Foodstirs YOUTUBE: /foodstirs  Press: FOODSTIRS.COM: Press Page
