ON WITH THE SHOW.

My guest this week is a very good friend of the family. Nate Harrison is the founder of the daycare "Mile High Adventures." Located in the Denver Colorado metro area:

http://www.milehighadvntrs.com/

About Nate:

"I've been working with children since 1995; most often as a child care provider, and in 2011 I decided to go private after feeling that so many programs were focused on something other than families and children.  I hold an elementary education degree in Colorado with a PE endorsement, won the State Pickleball Gold Medal in 2014 and 2015, am captain/coach of a men's ice hockey team at the Promenade (Four Championships and three 2nd place finishes in 9 seasons leading the team), and was PTA President at Ryan Elementary in Jefferson County from 2010-2012. I've coached soccer, football, tennis, kayaking/canoeing, and hockey; am a rock climbing instructor for Westminster Rec, been a Girl Scout counselor (residential and day camp), the head instructor and run the snowboard department at SolVista Basin/Granby Ranch in Colorado for six seasons, and have worked in Indiana and Boston with children as a para, substitute teacher, and child care provider. I have a 15 year old son who plays competitive hockey at Hyland Hills (MVP his second season; Captain in his 4th season), leading scorer for Standley Lake in his sophmore year - proud Dad moment, has won 5 state championships in flag football, (though he doesn't give enough credit to his handsome coach), plays lacrosse, and snowboards, wakesurfs, climbs, bikes, and pretty much plays any of the sports I do. My guiding philosophy is having children being outside and active as much as possible.  This helps them gain independence, see the playground of nature, and create lasting memories."

Nate and his son Gabe are HUGE Denver Bronco fans and I wanted to ask Nate right off the bat (no pun intended) how they are dealing with no sports.

I do have to mention that Nate is an avid Pickleball player and yes, we do mock him about the sport. Then Nate got me on my lack of being very good at Scrabble.

There are some great tips from Nate to help parents out with getting our kids active during these unusual times.

Nate does mention someone on the radio named "Stink," who is former NFL player Mark Schlereth heard on 104.3 The Fan in Denver.

Nate's son Gabe has been doing online schools for a few years and he offers up one key way to help our kids with getting through each school day.

Have an open and honest dialog with your kids was something that really stood out to me that Nate talked about.

We both agreed that our American school system is broken. Our hope is that schools will recognize this and make changes. If you want to contribute to Nate's cause after listen to this episode to start his own school PLEASE do so. His daycare is very cutting edge but also logical and a better way to teach kids.

Even Seth Godin thinks that our school system is in need of repair.

How to Thrive after Sports

Are you doing well during this time? I really hope you are and if you need me I am here for you. In this episode, I am happy you came by to listen. My guest is the owner of "Thrive After Sports," Taj Dashaun and it is a needed topic as many of our youth athletes are not able to attend their sports.

From Taj's Linkedin Bio:

I help athletes discover their new identity and life's direction after sports. I believe that what drove us in athletics, still drives us now. All it takes is a little guidance and a push in the right direction. When I first stepped away from the game I love, I struggled heavily with depression. I had never fully developed a clear vision for my life after football. I knew I wanted to get a “good job”, make “a ton of money” and be “successful”, but I felt lost and overwhelmed having no idea what I wanted to do with my life. After several years of stumbling around in the dark, I began to take my eyes off of myself and focus on serving others. I now run an intensive program for athletes who are struggling to adapt to life after sports. Not only do I help former athletes land jobs and start businesses, I help them find fulfillment in every single area of their lives. It's become my personal mission to reach out and help others overcome the fear, frustration, and uncertainty associated with life post-athletics. The question to ask oneself after hanging up the jersey isn’t: “who am I now?” The question is: “who do I want to become, and why?”

Website:  www.tajdashaun.com

We not only speak about how we parents can help our kids with their dreams of being a professional athlete (if they choose) but just navigating through the college process as far as why a certain major might not fit your athletes' sport.

What do you bring to the world? This turns out to be part of a discussion that I really want you to listen to because it can also deal with your relationships.

You might need to have an adult conversation with your student-athlete but you might need to bring some humor along with honesty.

As promised during this episode, the Jim Rohn quote.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Please be safe out there, live in gratitude and wash your hands.

"You must give up the life you planned in order to have the life that is waiting for you"-Joseph Campbell

The quote from Joseph Campbell is the quote you will find on the Instagram bio page for my guest Joe Hawley. His story has really fascinated me. Here is a guy who played in the NFL and then retired to live in a van.

Before I keep going, please check out the story from USA Today Writer Tom Schad and his behind the scenes story of Joe.

I do not know where I found Joe Hawley and his sidekick "Freedom." I just love a good story as a storyteller myself. You can find Joe and Freedom on Instagram at Joe.Hawley

Way back in 2018, Joe retires from the NFL to sell off his worldly possessions, adopt Freedom, and get a van so they can travel the US. I told Joe during the interview that even my mom has heard of him and his story. That is scary.

Joe is one of the most positive people I have spoken with and his IG photos and videos are filled with gratitude.

We talk about where this idea came from. Growing up in Anaheim, California. Why he was so smart with his money and where he learned that skill. His love and my hate for mushrooms. How he got into baseball late in life.

Please support Joe and Freedom on their quest of living in a world of gratitude.

He just recently announced in his newsletter that he is currently writing a book and is putting a podcast together. I am looking forward to that.

I did have towards the end some technical issues but Joe was a real pro so I am letting you know.

Before I let you go I do have three asks:

  1. Please let others know about the newsletter by going to my website and just signing up.

I had to attend a mandatory parenting meeting recently.

The facilitator was from the Safe Sport organization. Safe Sport is about making our youth sports athletes safe from sexual predators’.

The message during the meeting was why men were evil (my word not hers).

Yes, I am aware that the majority of sick in the head predators are men. Guess what? There are GREAT men who are NOT sexual predators.

Here is my take.

7 Ways To Think About Your Legacy

Have you thought of what your kids will say after you have passed? What will they say to their children about you even years after you are at your resting place (be it upstairs or downstairs, get my drift)

This was a conversation I had with a young man named "Bryan" who's father had passed away about two years ago. He was telling me how much he missed his dad, who was a mentor to Bryan. The fun times that they had together. The lessons Bryan learned because of the time he spent with his dad.

After speaking to Bryan, I really started to think about what my son will say to his friends about me when I pass away. I really want to know what my bonus daughters Betsy and Becca will say about me too.

Do you even think about your legacy? Do you care?

I have a friend named "Lawrence" (not his real name) who has three kids. Lawrence recently broke up with his girlfriend, and for the first time in years, he is single. All he would fixate is not having a girlfriend. Several of us told him to focus on his kids and himself. Do you think deep down his kids care if he has a girlfriend or not? They want to spend time with their dad. Again, after speaking with Lawrence, I'm sad to say that I really do not feel he understood that he needed to make his kids a higher priority. What legacy is he going to end up with?

Have you really sat down to think of what your legacy is? Think about it for a moment. What is your relationship like with just not your kid's but your circle of influence?

Do you care what others will say about you after you have moved on? I really thought about this after speaking with Bryan. His face would light up as he talked about his dad. I truly wanted to cry.

As much as I do tell my wife Ann that I do not think about if a person likes me or not: I do care about how I treated them. Does that make sense?

For me, I do not feel that I have been a good enough role model for my family. Currently, I have struggled with my weight, hate my day job, and I feel my depression is getting worse. This is NOT how you create a positive legacy. So, how does someone create a lasting legacy?

I want to share with you my seven ideas to create a better legacy. The order is irrelevant: it's about the execution.

  1. When I was in grade school, and our class had a field trip to the Chicago area, my dad would volunteer as a chaperone. How cool is it to not only hang out with your dad but to show him off as only a child can. You have that sense of pride of "this is my dad." I correctly recall a trip to one of the Chicago newspapers and my dad meeting us in front of the building since he lived downtown at the time. It was a memory that is tattooed on my brain. I took that life lesson, and when I became a dad, I would do my best to chaperone as many class trips when my son Connor was in grade school. The moral of this story is: step up and sit on a school bus with a group of screaming kids.
  2. Do you like the movie "Frozen?" You might not, but guess what, your kids might. My friend and one heck of a dad, James Lopez, who runs a business called "Cool4dads.com. " He told me recently that he received free tickets for a Frozen event that his youngest son wanted to attend. Did James say to his son "no" because this was something that dad did not want to do? Heck no! So the point here is to do things that your kids want to do.
  3. I mentioned that one of my struggles is my weight. We parents really need to think about our health. Our kids will mirror both good and bad habits. All of our kids are either in a sport, or they go to the gym. Or both. In my first book, "25 Tips for Divorced Dads," I mentioned that being physically fit is vital. You want to be on the planet for a long time. For me, in the past, the "Wonder Twins" (this is what we call my son and his bonus sister because they really could be blood-related) and I would go to the gym and shoot hoops. What activity can you do with your kids? Even if it hopscotch
  4. Having open and honest communication. Also, if you are not living in the same house as your kids, you should be talking daily to them. At times it could be a text message to just say "hi" or "I love you." However, you might need to have real conversations. I do not mean the standard "hows your day?" You already know that answer. Have you had "the talk?" What about talking about drugs? My son asked me many years ago if I had ever done drugs? I was candid with him and told him what my experience was back in the college days. One more thing, don't just talk to your kids: listen more than speaking.
  5. There will be times, and I know it can be hard to do, but you will need to admit when you are wrong. This goes beyond acknowledging to your kids. This could be even your former spouse. Part of your legacy is what your character is seen by others. Does that make sense? People's B.S detector will know when you are lying to them. If you do not tell the truth in front of your kids and they know you are not telling the truth: what does that say about your morel fiber?
  6. It is okay to fail. It is even better if you fail in front of your kids. Let us take this up a notch and say let your kids fail too. When my son Connor and I would go to the local ice rink and work on some hockey drills, I hated to fall. After his games, when we would drive back home, he and I would talk about the positives and negatives: even if the team had won. Failure can be such a great learning tool. Do not let your ego get the best of you. Failing is part of life. Like it or not.
  7. You might roll your eyes when you read this one, but this is in my mind important for your legacy. Here we go: make your bed every day. Yes! What does this have to do with legacy? If your kids see that you are making your bed consistently, then you are now creating a positive habit. They, too, might (not right away) will build on positive habits. I will admit that neither of the Wonder Twins makes their bed when they are at our house, but in my mind, it is still a visual that one day will make sense to them. After my divorce is when I started to make my bed each day. To the point, I would do it when I was out of work, and it was a day I was not even leaving the house. When I am doing a speaking engagement, I have always worn a tie. When I coached hockey, I wore a tie. Because my son has seen me in a tie after all of these years: guess who wears a tie to his hockey games?

Yes, I can keep going, but you are a smart person, so I know you understand where this is all going. We parents are FAR from being perfect. Try being a bonus parent: even more laborious.

As I said at the start of the piece: do you think of your legacy? After talking with Bryan, it really did hit me of where I can improve as both being a man and a dad. For me, I want to have more meaningful conversations with the Wonder Twins. I want to be better at (if they are open to it), offering life advice. Being honest with my mistakes so they can learn from them.

Overall we parents should remember that our kids are watching us and listening to us. Yes, the old saying talking about our actions speak louder then words are truth.

My plea to you is that going forward, you will think more about your actions because when you are long gone from this world, wouldn't you want your kids to say kind things about you? Especially at your final resting place. Again either up or down.

I had to ask the question.

My son Connor and I were headed to his hockey game when I asked him a question that has been on my mind for a long time.

You too should ask the question.

Do you know what your kids think of you as a parent? I asked.

My goal (no pun intended) is to ask our kids and Connor was the first I asked. I simply said, "am I a good dad?" He was a bit thrown off the question and I know he was not ready for a question of this magnitude: but I wanted to ask.

I believe we should ask our kids and not just once but at least once a quarter.

Please let me know if you ask the question and email me, please.

On this episode I am very honored to have Joanie and Clint Malarchuck.

I have wanted to do this interview for a long time but I was very nervous to ask.

Clint Malarchuck was a former NHL goalie. Then one night changed his life forever.

Clint had his jugular slashed during a game.

What I wanted to find out is how his wife Joanie has helped him get through his dark days. As someone who has had their own dark days but have a wonderful wife who is very supportive.

We talk about how Joanie has helped Clint but at the same time how they are helping others.

On March 24th Duke was finally at peace. I am going to tell you that there is a better way of saying good bye to our pets.

My mom recommended to look into doing hospice for Duke. I had never thought of this or heard of this concept for pets.

On this episode you will hear about not just the passing of our Duke but this is how I want to die: surrounded by my family.

On Saturday Connor and I watched the Chicago Blackhawks loose to the Colorado Avs. Here is where the story gets more intense. Why do we men need to be such ass holes in public? I watched two grown men flip off the ref and the "Hawks" goalie Corey Crawford: for what reason? Men we need to stop thinking that this type of behavior is a good thing. It is not.

Yes I made a bit of a scene at the game too.

Here is a picture from my hotel room and a "hack" I am using since I like my rook dark as I am sleeping.

I did mention that I have been doing a lot of crying as of late. Here is the link to Elizabeth Gilbert's Ted Talk:

Adrian Dater Part Two

Our guest is Adrian Dater, who I met at a men's mental health workshop in Denver. One of the speakers is a past guest on the Blending The Family Podcast: Clint Malarchuk and his wife, Joanie.

As I was walking out to my car, I was walking with Adrian. He is one of my hockey go-to writers even though I am not a Colorado Avalanche fan. I wanted to ask him so many writing questions, but I wanted to wait for a better time.

This will be part two-part conversation I had with Adrian. In this episode, we talked about why I am not a fan of the Colorado Avs. Who is Sean Jensen https://broadstreetpublishing.com/authors/sean-jensen/

Did I hear Dater speak as if he too has "Impostor Syndrome"?

Adrian's brief bio:

Adrian Dater writes about the NHL for Bookies.com. The longtime NHL writer spent 25 years at  The Denver Post, 20 of which as the beat writer of the Colorado Avalanche. He also covered the Avs for  BSN Denver and was the lead NHL columnist with  Bleacher Report from 2013-16. Dater has written six books, including the best-selling hockey book "Blood Feud: Detroit Red Wings v. Colorado Avalanche, The Inside Story of Pro Sports' Best and Nastiest Rivalry of its Era," and was a regular contributor to  Sports Illustrated from 2011-13. Dater can be heard on 104.3 The Fan.

Grew up in New Hampshire, moved to Denver in 1991. Married, son, 15, live in Thornton

I do want to write that if you live in the Fort Collins area to please attend Start-Up week from February 24-28.

Let’s get right to it. There are life events as a parent you want to be there for your kids.

  • Being born
  • First steps
  • Helping them ride a bike

There have been a couple of events that I wanted to be part of with my son but I got stiff armed from the former.

The former and her “SO” bought the boy a car. Then this week I was informed that the boy will need a suit because he is going to PROM!

I was told by the former that I needed to have the boy home by 1 this weekend so she could get him a suit. I told her that he and I will do it.

On this episode you will hear my thoughts about a missed opportunity or am I just taking this to far?

Welcome to this weeks Blending The Family podcast. Are you doing good?

I am super pumped to share with you this episode. My guest is Lauren Raymond and she reached out to me on Linkedin. She asked me if I would answer questions that dealt with marriage and parenting. I said to Lauren why don't we record this and make it a podcast. She agreed.

Her questions that she asked me were the first time I heard them. I was 100 percent honest and the questions really started to make me think as both a parent and a husband. I hope they make you think as well.

Welcome to this episode Michael David Daniels who is the founder and CEO of Fayr. He was on the show "Planet of the Apps" and because of that is backed by none other than Gwyneth Paltrow.

The website is Fayr.com and Michael was very kind to offer you a special 20 percent off the App. When you checkout use the code: blending to get the discount.

How did Michael come up with this App? Here is some of his story.

"As a separated father of two young children, Michael found himself overwhelmed by the legal, financial, and emotional costs of divorce on his family. After 20 years in the homebuilding industry, Michael hung up his hard hat to create a tool that would not just improve his family’s life, but would also help the other 55 million divorced co-parents in the US. Despite his success on the Apple tv show "Planet of the Apps" and partnering with Gwyneth Paltrow, Michael's guiding light remains the same: working every day to be his best self for his kids. "

You will as part of this episode:

  • We do talk about how Michael got on the TV show.
  • He was homeless for a time.
  • Who developed the App.
  • Why the family court system is a joke.
  • Features of the App and why you need this to help with co-parenting.
  • How Michael took the tollway and in a good way cost him $800.00

Another App that could have saved me many sleepless nights when I was first divorced. I hope you do checkout Fayr and if you have a co-parent who is not willing to work with you this App can really help you. My favorite is the time stamping.

If you have an Echo Dot I might set it off so be ready. Not once but twice.

Divorce Diaries Show Creator Michele Traina

If you do not ask the question, then the answer will always be no. I happened to be on Instagram when there was a notification that our guest Michele Traina was doing a live video. I jumped on because I've wanted her on the podcast ever since I started to follow her on IG.

I dropped a comment in her feed, and well, here we are.

Michele is someone that, if you get on her wrong side, then you won't be sleeping with the fishes, nope, you will be part of her comedy act. Just ask Police Officer Mike.

On this episode we talk about:

  • Don't have a meeting with her while you schedule your own meeting with someone else (funny story).
  • Does Michele's daughter think she is funny?
  • Is laughter therapy?

From Michele's bio:

Michele Traina is a performer, educator, and creator of multiple performance brands that carry a thread of healing through humor. She has toured around the country from Stand up to Shakespeare. Michele earned her Masters in Educational Theatre from NYU and has her principal, supervisor, and theatre teacher certifications in the state of New Jersey. In 2013 she founded Propbox Players, a theatre company for young audiences geared towards inclusion and performance for diverse learners. Her one-woman show How to Be A Successful Teacher was in United Solo Festival in 2012 as well as multiple other performances in the tri-state area. She continued her one-woman show 'train' when she was getting divorced by putting her diary on the stage. Michele created Divorce Diaries in 2013, and it has evolved into a one-woman comedy show that laughs at life's beautiful mishaps.

A Jersey Native, Michele's work has a trademark accent and physicality to it, unlike anyone else. She's fiercely energetic and uses her own challenges in life to motivate and inspire her practice as an educator and performer. Michele's obsession with coffee, high kicks, and running literally everywhere. Her favorite role will always be a mom to her beautiful daughter, Grace.

Before we start, I need your help.

  3. My goal is to get the podcast in the top 100 Apple podcasts, and I can only do this with your help. Please leave a rating and review, share the link to the podcast with your social media followers, and support the podcast's guest.

My guest Jide Gamu, is the founder of the app IFOURcore. We will talk about not just the origin of the app but how it could save your marriage.

My question to you is, who taught you how to date? Think about this. As a parent, what is our role to help our kids?

Jide began his career while working for the Colorado Alliance for Reform in Education (C.A.R.E.); on behalf of school choice, Jide helped develop the Alliance for Equal Opportunity in Education to promote school choice for students. Shortly after that, he started his first business, C.O.R.E. (Colorado youth – Overcoming adversity – Recognizing their potential – Empowering one another). Through his work with C.O.R.E.

Jide developed a community program called BarberShop Talk, an introspective gathering of men from 8 to 80 who met in a barbershop to discuss community issues. BarberShop Talk grew to include a television broadcast hosted by Jide and later produced a spin-off for women called “A Woman’s Worth.”

In 2005, Jide started “Youth Tree,” a community redevelopment organization comprised of young individuals whose potential for excellence exceeded their age. He also co-hosted a radio show on KLDC 800 called “Anointed Word on the Street.” Topics included the impact of growing up in a fatherless home.

In 2006, after more than 700 hours of training, Jide helped open the first Educo Gym in America. His practice has taken him as far as Sardinia, Italy, Paradise Island, Bahamas, and Belize. In early 2008 Jide was elected as the 2nd Vice-Chair of the Aurora Human Relations Commission and was also awarded the “2007 Activist Award” by the City of Aurora.

April 29th of 2008, Jide joined the U.S. Army. He conquered a 12-month deployment with the 2nd Brigade 4th Infantry Division to Mosul & Kirkuk, Iraq, in the fall of 2008. In the summer of 2010, he committed to the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), achieving one of his many “adventurous goals” by becoming an Airborne Trooper. Shortly after that, Jide was selected to work in Washington DC, where he currently resides. With his daughter Leilani, Jide is endeavoring to bring about positive change in his new community.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. I am lucky to be alive. Why? I have attempted to take my life several times.

I wanted to share three ideas to help you or loved ones who struggle with the feelings of depression.

Today I came across this link that had some great information:

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – If you feel you or someone you know may need emotional support, please visit the Lifeline’s website at suicidepreventionlifeline.org for helpful resources or call 1-800-273-TALK (8255). The Lifeline is free, confidential, and available to everyone in the U.S. You do not have to be suicidal to call the Lifeline.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness Warmline – Call or text 775-241-4212. The NAMI Warmline is a stigma-free, non-crisis, phone service you can call or text to speak one-on-one with a NAMI Western Nevada CARES (Community Assistance for Recovery through Education and Support) operator. The Warmline is staffed by trained peers in recovery, who provide support to peers by telephone. The Warmline provides confidential support when we want to talk to someone. The Warmline gives you a peer’s perspective on how to find support in the community by phone, text, or video. Knowing someone cares can motivate us to carry on in recovery when there is anxiety.

My hope is this podcast can help others along with this information above.

TELL YOUR KIDS YOU LOVE THEM EACH DAY

In this episode, I want to give you the most important tip from my book "25 Tips For Divorced Dads."

I feel that as parents forget to just tell our kids that we love them. The world can seem moving fast and before you know it, poof, the kids are out of the house.

For me personally, I have struggled with having regrets when it comes to my son Connor. I know it is not too late but my thought is that as he was growing up I was not a good enough father to him.

More on that in a blog post.

I do try letting him know that I love him even though I do not see him on a regular basis.

Tell your kids you love them. Even in front of their friends.

I will admit that for my oldest bonus daughter Betsy, it is not easy to say. I think that will be a follow up podcast.

My other bonus daughter Becca, we have a pretty cool relationship and saying I love you to each other is very natural.

Bottom line, just say it.

EP 168 Get a Webcam

Tip number three is to get a webcam.

Before we start, I need your help.

  1. Please let others know about the newsletter.
  2. If you or someone you know needs coaching, please click here and it will take you to the coaching page.
  3. My goal is to get the podcast in the top 100 Apple podcasts, and I can only do this with your help. Please leave a rating and review, share the link to the podcast with your social media followers, and support the podcast's guest.

Welcome to episode number 168 and it is a bit of a blast from the past. When I first wrote this book "25 Tips for Divorced Dads" it was at a time when having a webcam was not too common.

I was attending a Toastmasters meeting when one of the members asked to talk after the meeting. He knew how I was coaching other dads after divorce. He wanted ideas on how to stay connected with his kids since they lived a couple of states over. I told him to get a webcam for both the kids and himself.

This was back in 2009. He liked that idea but he wanted to make sure his former spouse would agree to let the kids use the camera.

When it comes to co-parenting, egos need to be pushed out and to only think about the kid's needs first.

Here we are in 2020 where the word of the year is "ZOOM." Video technology has changed and maybe for divorced parts it has changed for the better. You can Facetime your kids or send a video message right off your phone. Staying connected with your kids is better now with tech.

Is there a topic you want me to cover in future podcasts?

I have been challenged to add more content to my business coach. You can go to YouTube and see on the Blending The Family channel this episode.

This episode I will talk about a simple idea of sending your kids either a postcard or letter to help stay connected.

Years ago I needed to travel on Sundays to New York's Laguardia Airport. Once I was off the plane I would stop at the gift shop to buy 5 postcards. Each day I would do my best to print neat enough for my son Connor to read once he would receive them at his moms' house.

This summer Connor worked three jobs and we only saw him a couple of times. I ended up typing a letter to him. I know deep down he really appreciated the gesture.

This is my tip for you on this podcast episode. Write to your kids.

This episode marks a significant change. I have moved to a downstairs into one of our spare bedrooms. My wife Ann and I have been sharing one home office, and as of typing these words, we have our own home offices!

With that being said, let's move on.

This episode comes right from my first book, "25 Tips for Divorced Dads: How to create special memories and grow your bonds with your kids." I am going to go through each tip from the book and add more commentary, and I hope it brings value to you and your family.

Starting with this episode, I will also add video, so please subscribe to Youtube the Blending The Family channel.

How can you stay connected to your kids when you do not see them regularly? Yes, there is calling. Yes, there is texting. What about writing (or typing) a letter to them?

I have horrible handwriting. This past summer, my son Connor was working three jobs, and seeing him was not as frequent.

My idea was to write him a letter. I know a text would be quicker. When you write a letter, it has far more meaning to it.

Please subscribe to all of the social media, and I hope this episode was beneficial to you and your family.

Welcome to this week's episode with the authors of the book "Our Happy Divorce" Nikki Debartolo and Benjamin Heldfond. After speaking with Nikki and Ben, I have learned that there is a better way to co-parent.

We talked about how to co-parent during the Coronavirus. You might be shocked at how Nikki and Ben stepped up to blend their family with having each other's spouses and kids under one roof. They even live Seven houses from each other.

While we were talking, I mentioned to Nikki and Ben about Erika Englund from episode 160 and how she and her family came up with celebrating after her divorce the day she got married to her now-former husband.  Erika created "Familyversary."

Nikki talked about how her husband Chad came to their son Asher to get permission to ask his mom to marry him.

Bios:

Sonia is a Miami food blogger and founder of Divorceify. She is an attorney and prisoner of food, who is obsessive about food photography, and will do just about anything for a soup dumpling. As a divorce and family law litigator, Sonia witnessed the confusion, inflexibility, and inefficiencies inherent to the adversarial divorce process; the archaic one-size fits all system often made it unnecessarily difficult to achieve her client’s goals.

She saw the value of using technology to simplify and streamline the process, thus saving her clients time, money and stress. Having experienced her own divorce, Sonia truly appreciates the importance of building a reliable and trustworthy support team. Despite her deep legal understanding of the law, she quickly realized she couldn’t face her own divorce alone. Sonia reached out and created a multi-disciplinary team to support her process – a safe space, where she could begin her personal divorce journey and find her road to recovery. Sonia founded Divorceify to create a safe, confidential space for people to receive the holistic support they need as they navigate divorce and re-build their lives.

Sonia wants to provide others with the same team approach that she found so helpful – surround yourself with professionals who really “get it” and you become empowered to embrace the next chapter and build a bright future. Sonia is originally from Barcelona and is fluent in Spanish and Catalan. She is currently living in Miami Beach, Florida overlooking the Atlantic ocean. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, food photography, consulting with other small businesses, yoga, traveling, and spending time with her cat, Bella. She is a graduate of Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, and American University in Washington, D.C.

My guest today is someone I have been working to get onto the show for two years. He is a hard man to get a sit down with because he is so busy with his purpose in life. Plus he is rubbing elbows with the Royal Family.

Mark Williams is a Keynote Speaker, Author, and International Campaigner. He founded International Fathers Mental Health Day and the #HowAreYouDad Campaign to help ensure that all parents and families are supported throughout the perinatal period. Mark has spoken on television and radio stations around the world.  Working alongside Dr. Jane Hanley, he has published articles on Fathers (Paternal) Mental Health.

In 2012, Mark was awarded “Inspirational Father of the year” and “Local Hero” at the Pride of Britain Awards.  On World Mental Health Day in 2016, Mark was invited to meet The Royal Family and in 2019 he was awarded the Point Of Light Award by the Prime Minister. Mark is also an Ambassador for Mother's for Mother's Charity.

Mark and I really go into the weeds of mental health. We talk about his struggles while his son was being born.

Please check out his TEDx Talk.

This episode means a lot to me because of the aspect of men's mental health. Please share this with men/dads who are in need of understanding that we men need to let other men know when we need help.

Hello, from the penalty box, a little hockey humor there. Today I am so excited to talk with Columnist for USA Hockey Magazine, Christie Casciano Burns. Yes, we are talking about hockey in July. If you are a hockey parent, you will understand that the season never really ends.

Christie's Bio:

Emmy nominated veteran anchor, and author Christie Casciano is a graduate of Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications. After reporting for WROC-TV in Rochester, Christie was eager to return home to her big Italian family in Syracuse to join the NewsChannel 9 team and the station she grew up watching.

Christie anchors NewsChannel 9 First at 4:00, NewsChannel 9 at 5:00, 5:30, 6:00, and Eleven at 11:00 with Rod Wood. Christie has covered many important stories that have impacted the Central New York community and developed NewsChannel 9's OnTheLookout.net, a crime franchise that has been recognized statewide for its efforts to help keep neighborhoods safe. Each week Christie profiles wanted criminals, and her reporting has helped police solve hundreds of cases.

She is the recipient of numerous community and professional awards, including the Syracuse Press Club's Professional Standards Award, and received a proclamation from the Onondaga County Executive naming December 29, 2012, as Christie Casciano Day. Christie's investigative series on the heroin epidemic earned her an Emmy nomination and the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award.

Christie is a proud hockey mom and has written three hockey-themed books; Haunted Hockey in Lake Placid, The Puck Hog, and My Kids Play Hockey, have sold to hockey parents across the country. Her monthly hockey mom columns have become required reading for the half-million readers of USA Hockey Magazine. She also teamed up with NewsChannel 9's Lou Gulino and Tim Fox to write "Syracuse Television History." She also had the privilege of flying with the Thunderbirds in an F-16 Fighter Jet and pulled 9-G's!

When the guest says to you, "that's been an hour?" I take that as a compliment. I was able to hear from Christie's point of view about being a hockey parent. At one part of our conversation, she started to interview me. That was wonderful. What a delight Chrisite was, and I hope she comes back on.

ON WITH THE SHOW

Welcome to this week's podcast episode. My guest is a close family friend, Chris Williams. He is making his second appearance on the show at a time when our world is going through what I hope is a positive change.

Chris, and  I talk about how to help our kids talk about diversity. We parents need to have an open and safe dialog with our kids.

We do talk about grilling and please come back to episode 162 as I will give you an update on Chris as a grilling master.

When Chris was in the military he had what was called a "Battle Buddy." We all need one or maybe a few of these people in our lives.

I did this on purpose but Chris at the time of the recording was waiting to hear if he and his staff had the Coronavirus. They did not.

I wanted to know how his wife Jen, who is white, has helped support him and their two boys when it comes to diversity.

My guest on this week's podcast is Erika Englund. She has a positive way of celebrating her divorce. I am not sure how many of you could spend time with your former spouse?

Erika is a tech founder and the world has changed in the years since my divorce back in 2008. With the explosion of Apps, it is at times a better way to co-parent and even communicate with your former.

Erik opens up with telling her story of how she never won a case as a litigator. However, it did set her up for a path where she is much happier (nachos and whale watching became her "ah-ha" moment) today.

Erika's bio goes a little something like this:

Erika Anne Englund is an attorney, mediator, law professor, and legal tech founder.

Now practicing exclusively out of court, she has mediated over five thousand hours of successful divorce resolutions. As a single parent of two young children, Erika experiences the joys and challenges of divorce life on a daily basis, happily co-parenting with her former husband (most of the time – she’s not perfect). Erika has an unwavering belief that divorcing people deserve better than the current court system provides. It is her life’s goal to work in the legal, educational, and technological fields in order to effectuate this change.

A few weeks before the divorce finalized, we started celebrating “familyversary,” turning our wedding date into something happy, rather than leaving it as a reminder of something sad. There is a great story about how the first familyversary came about (magic? Coincidence? Divine intervention?). We’ll be celebrating our 16th familyversary (2020) next week.
