Rank #1: 45: Director of Strategy & Innovation and Podcaster - Zara Bryson

Podcast cover
Read more
This week we are joined by Director of Strategy & Innovation and podcast founder & host of 'Who's Next,' the fabulous Zara Bryson.
Zara's energy is infectious! Not only does she discuss her role, but she also shares, with gusto, her love of maths, which is more about overcoming confidence blockers as much as it is about maths. Never been a fan of the subject? There is a chance you'll be a convert after listening to Zara's zeal on all things maths & problem-solving.
With ambitions of being a human rights lawyer, she studied a Bachelor of Laws at Birmingham University. On graduating she sidestepped into market research. She quickly became frustrated with insight often being an exercise rather than a catalyst and became eager to move into strategy. A role shrouded in mystery, she wasn't sure of the route to reach her ambition. Having persisted & securing the position she was focused on, she talks with passion and energy about how much she enjoys her current job. Zara also shares the importance of asking for help or career guidance and through doing so, the potential to getting to where you need to be quicker.
Zara also talks about her incredible podcast 'Who's Next' which focuses on shining a light on brilliant women and providing inspiration for all. She shares the reasons behind her initial procrastination getting it started, how much she has enjoyed the process and the connections she has made. You can find it on Soundcloud, Spotify and most podcast platforms. You can also follow 'Who's Next' on Instagram: @whosnextpoduk for updates and emoji-tastic posts!

For episode 47 I am joined by the wonderful Global Head of Brand at Graze, Cristina Loaiza.

She shares that for a period of time, she felt this early career uncertainty slowed her progression but with hindsight has discovered it has actually been a bonus - giving her more experience and a broader perspective.

Rank #11: 52: Composer - Hannah Kendall

Podcast cover
Read more
For our final episode in Series 1, we are joined by the incredible Composer, Hannah Kendall.

Hannah discusses her early start in music: learning to play the violin at four years old. She shares how her love of all things music grew throughout her childhood and in her teens, she would go to the library each Saturday to loan Bach CDs.

She confesses that she had never considered composition as a career, as she had never known or been taught about any women - or women of colour composers at school. She muses her career path as a result of an admin error when she was at university, which meant that she had to take an 'extra' class to make up her points to ensure she could graduate and it was in this class - 'composition' - that she found her calling.

Hannah talks about her process; starting off with graphical representations of how she sees the music taking shape (this fascinated me) and the anxiety involved with starting a new project.

Hannah 'keeps it real' whilst I consistently try and romanticise her creativity and talents in the interview - I have to be honest, I'm still in awe at what she does and creates, I mean just listen to her music (link below)!

Rank #13: 41: Coder - Suze Shardlow

Podcast cover
Read more
This week I'm joined by Coder, Suze Shardlow.

Suze was fascinated by programming from a young age - citing 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' as an inspiration. Ferris' character, played by Matthew Broderick, hacks into the school computer system to change the number of days he has skived.
Suze was encouraged at primary school to explore computing but by the time she reached secondary school, with little access and no encouragement, the option to pursue it evaporated. Whilst her interest in coding never waned, she left school going on to achieve a BA in Business Studies and a postgraduate diploma in Marketing.

Working for the London Metropolitan Police in a Senior Leadership role, she had a very successful and fulfilling career, but with coding in her blood, she took the opportunity to retrain when her role with the Met was made redundant.

She has produced some awesome work, coding her way to connect the shy and introverted pre-events with 'Ice Breaker'. A programme that allows you to connect with others attending events via Meetup. She also has created 'Borro' which allows users to share household items.

Suze is also a crafter, with a love for sewing, making anything from bunting to a pair of trousers. She discusses why craft and coding are connected and her passion for getting involved and providing solutions.

For episode 37, we visited the wonderful Printmaker & Illustrator, Kate Gibb in her studio in north London.

Kate discusses her creative journey, scraping into art school with a couple of charcoal drawings, through to having commercial success producing prints for the likes of Apple, Penguin and the Chemical Brothers.

She shares her creative silkscreen process - unorthodox! Favouring happy accidents, the desire to ensure no two images she produces are exactly the same and valuing traces of what has come before being enmeshed within the fabric of image-making.

Kate also discusses overcoming the challenge of giving too much emotional intensity to the success of a piece of work and often feeling exhausted and sometimes unhappy as a result. She stresses that caring a little less is vital to saving some creative energy to enjoy the final output.

Kate's work is so beautiful,  she has a way with shape, pattern and colour that burns into your retina leaving an indelible trace in your mind's eye.

For episode 35, I’m joined by the awe-inspiring Deputy Managing Director, Jackie Scully.

Jackie breakdowns what her role, as Deputy Managing Director for Think Publishing, involves: a lot! No day is the same - from research & innovation to the organisation's profitability, through to content strategy for clients. She is also responsible for leading & motivating the team and talks about how important it is to manage with kindness and compassion and to support colleagues to find their edges - even if that means they may leave the organisation as their skills and ambitions grow as a result.

She also shares her personal journey of being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32 and how running 10km, at the end of her last chemo treatment, gave her focus and purpose. She hasn’t stopped pushing herself ever since! She has run marathons (even on her wedding day!) and trekked The Great Wall of China. Now five years clear of cancer, she has set herself five EPIC challenges. One she completed the weekend following this interview - a 66-mile walk, non-stop through the night around the Isle of Wight. The next one, in June, is a half iron-woman, she is then following that with climbing Ben Nevis, an ultra-marathon and then cycling coast to coast - all to raise money for charity! Towards the end of this year, she has plans for a non-stop 10-hour Spin session! I can’t deny I’m tempted by the Spinathon, which is baffling as I’ve never been to a Spin class in my life! Jackie does that to you - she has vigour that is infectious as it is inspiring!

Rank #18: 30: Dance Company Director, Choreographer & Consultant - Kerry Nicholls

Podcast cover
Read more
For episode 30 we are joined by Dance Company Director, Choreographer and Consultant, Kerry Nicholls.

You are in for a treat - Kerry is incredible. Not only does she run Kerry Nicholls Dance (KND), she has taken the many challenges that life has presented and fashioned them into skills and tools to propel her forward. She coaches, mentors, teaches, consultants, directs and choreographs performances across the globe.

Kerry discusses what it is to set your own version of success, not being sidetracked by others projections of accomplishment. Charting her own course, she set up KND to flip the conventional approach to dance studios. Where most traditional dance studios focus on choreography and touring with a secondary element of education, Kerry placed education and professional development and the growth of others as the heart of KND in addition to choreography.

She shares her passion for supporting dancers beyond the industry 'norms' broadening the expectations of dance in relation to body shape, gender and age. Pushing for change.

Kerry is so inspiring and radiantly positive with her sense of self and her drive (I would say calling) to support and grow others creativity. She really reminded me, that sometimes the unexpected (or unwanted) can be a gift in disguise, it is down to how you perceive and manage it.

This week’s guest is Creative, Scarlett Montanaro. Forging a career within advertising is something Scarlett knew, from a young age, she wanted to do. Since graduating from the London College of Communication in 2012 she has trailblazed her career - literally jumping on a flight to Singapore, the day she handed in her final year dissertation, for an internship at BBH. She then went on to land her first permanent job, on the back of a winning pitch within weeks of being at AnalogFolk followed by working on D&AD Pencil winning campaigns at AMV BBDO. She hit a crisis point when she was feeling unfulfilled by the projects she was working on and this instigated her to co-found Crack + Cider with Charlotte Cramer. Crack + Cider is a non-for-profit that sells practical supplies online for people to give to their local homeless population. Scarlett is full of creativity energy and her focus of using her talents and skills for making positive changes in the world is awesome!
