Well, my son Simon and I were able to take part in the American Fork Indie Author Day last Saturday. It was very enjoyable and I must say, insightful in many respects. Though the library didn't have as many teens show up as I'd hoped, my true intent was to be there, have a new experience, and mix with 'my people'. Yes, I wanted to meet readers of Chronicles of a Hero, which I did--and thank you for traveling so far to see me, you beautiful people--but I hoped to learn something new. I did. After all the conversations, and directing my attention at every child that passed my table--I learned that it'll always be a teen that walks up, gives me a smile, and does a sudden Karate chop to my plans. After the whole event passed, it was a teen girl who approached me, gave me a smile and with her mother and grandmother standing there...showed me how this podcast is lacking. Ouch. Two weeks ago I got my first colonoscopy, and I got back the results. It wasn’t good. What does that mean? It means I’ve been referred to an oncologist, and I am now hyper aware of the choices I make each and every day. It woke up the dragon in my soul who has been asleep for years, in my attempt to be the sweet, patient, kind person I wanted to be when I grew up. Its TEN days left to Christmas!! It never fails to amazing me, how many opinions are out there on writing and publishing. Get ten people in a room and you’ll likely walk away with 22 opinions. Crazy. What bugs me though, is people pushing products and platforms like there’s only one way to do things, and I don’t just mean every Tom, Dick, and Buford here, but people with real influence. People trying to get writers to buy ‘stuff’ (cause I don’t think there’s a better word for it). So here I am, Jaime Buckley, old, irritating fiction writer that I am, to serve up my own opinion, mostly so I can sleep better at night, but also so you don’ have to stress…or waste your money. There’s no need. I’d like to share the ‘truth’ (translation: my own 112.4% biased opinion) and then share what I personally use myself, and WHY. Now, to be clear here, I’m not talking about the method of writing. That’s not in the scope of this article. I’m specifically talking about your process (worldbuilding) and what you do when you have the contents of a book. This is about TOOLS. So let me do the honor and simplify what you DO need to both write AND sell a book—because I’ll always assume you’ll want to make money.
