I met Tanur in 2019 and have come to know him a bit more since then. Listening to his interview with Dona Speir, I’m impressed by his drive to serve others by directing his work through his own purpose, his thoughtful approach to his work and to interviewing, and most of all in the results of his podcast, and his own life. Great work, highly recommended!

Rank #2: ***Special Episode - Attending Sadhguru Inner Engineering Course ***

Podcast cover
Read more

I recently attended Sadhguru's Two-day Inner Engineering Course here in San Francisco. The course provides tools and solutions to empower yourself to create your life the way you want it. The course gives you the opportunity to intellectually explore the basics of life using methods that are from the distilled essence of yogic sciences. The course imparts practical wisdom to manage your body, mind, emotions, and the fundamental life energy within.  In preparation for the course a took a 7-part, 10 hour online course. This episode is my reflections two days after the experience. I hope you'll open up to receive this powerful wisdom that has the power to transform your life.

The course was a rare opportunity to be taught by Sadhguru. Sadhguru is often described as a contemporary spiritual leader, since he belongs to no particular tradition and incorporates aspects of yogic sciences that are most relevant for modern-day life into his teachings and practices. His scientific methods for self-transformation have universal appeal. Sadhguru’s insights into the mechanisms of life are an outcome of his profound experience of the Self, and serve as a guide to exploring the deeper dimensions of life. His life and work serve as reminders that the inner science of yoga is not esoteric philosophy from an outdated past, but is absolutely relevant and applicable to our lives today. Sadhguru has dedicated himself to the elevation of the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of all people. He is an author and opinion maker who is regularly invited to speak at leading international forums. He has spoken at many prestigious global conferences such as World Peace Summit at the United Nations and the World Economic Forum.

This week is a one-of-a-kind episode in which I interview 10 people from my Master's of Education graduate school program. Each of us comes from different backgrounds into the same program. I thought it would be interesting to give you a glimpse of the immense sense of purpose each one is bringing into their teaching and education youth in urban, public charter schools in California. The cohort is as diverse as the students we serve and I am impressed with how passionate, caring, and conscientious each of my classmates is. In this interview I ask roughly four general questions answered over about five minutes.

Those questions are:   1. Whats your name where and what you’ll be teaching    2. What is your purpose for doing this program?       3. What kind of teacher do you hope to become?   4. How will your background and story Come into your teaching?     The model of this program is called a Teacher Residency. We spend a year in an accelerated Master's degree program through the Alder Graduate School of Education, while we co-teach alongside a Mentor Teacher at a school-site. I'm doing my program through KIPP Bay Area Schools- a free- public charter school network open to all students while others in the program are doing their teaching training through Aspire Public Schools and Caliber Schools - both also free, public charter schools.      Find out more about our Teacher Residency program at...

Rank #8: 037: Tanur Badgley - Teaching Others How to Discover Their Purpose and Inspiring Them to Fulfill It

Podcast cover
Read more

Bryan Falchuk was a guest of People of Purpose on episode 015. He came into my life by serendipity on his 80 something podcast interview. His story of losing more than 100 pounds and overcoming the pain of his wife's battle with cancer is inspirational. Today he runs marathons and inspires people to live a better life every day through his book, Ted Talks, and now his podcast Do a Day. He asked me to be a guest on his podcast to share my story of how I used my rock bottom experience nearly dying after a major fall at Yosemite National Park to live a life more alive and purpose driven. Below is his writeup:

"After suffering many injuries and a major concussion when he fell off the side of a mountain, Tanur was forced to relook at the idea of purpose, the choices we make to relearn life, and how to actually live it.

Tanur had me on his show a while ago, and I was blown away by the depth of his soul and his humanness, and knew I had to have him on my show one day. Let's just say I wasn't let down."

Tanur Badgley is a school teacher, blogger, and host of his own podcast, People of Purpose. Fascinated with understanding the unique gifts he's been given and how he is shaped into a higher purpose when he chooses to live with full appreciation of these gifts. At age 19, during the summer break after his freshman year of college, Tanur was hiking in Yosemite National park with his father and younger brother. When his younger brother decided to venture off the beaten path and got stuck, Tanur found himself on a small ledge with no safe way down. Tanur ended up barrel rolling down the mountain, and sustained multiple injuries, but miraculously none of them were fatal.

Three years later, Tanur finished college without a plan or purpose. he found himself working a soulless corporate sales job, battling depression, and suffering from a second concussion. He finally found his path and purpose in 2015 when he packed up and moved to Phrae, Thailand to become an English teacher to 400 5th and 6th graders. During this time he kept up his blog, Student of the World, with information he found out about himself and the world through teaching, volunteering on a organic farm in Cambodia, trekking to Mt. Everest Bas Camp, sitting for a 5-day meditation course, and his month-long yoga teacher training certification course in Rishikesh, India.

One year later, Tanur felt happy and whole with his new life style, so he decided not to renew his teaching contract, opting instead to vagabond and couch-surf across Southeast Asia, the U.S., and Canada through family and friends. During this time, Tanur started his podcast, People of Purpose, in October of 2017 because he felt compelled to go beyond himself and begin a project that shares the stories and wisdom of all the purposeful people he met along the way. People of Purpose features guests who live with a high degree of intentionality, are leading communities toward positive change, and are treading a path that is very authentic to their passions and purpose. People of Purpose has expanded to now include a biweekly newsletter where Tanur shares what he's been experiencing and dwelling on to grow in his purpose and how they can be applied to your life as well.

After 15 months of odd jobs and moving around, Tanur finally moved to San Francisco in July of 2018 where he's working on getting his Masters of Education in one year through an accelerated program and teaches 7th grade at a urban, public-charter school in San Francisco. Tanur is driven by the purpose he can express through each of his endeavors and projects and the consistency of learning and challenging that helps him grow into his purpose which is "to be a conduit of God's love by accepting everything He is, opening himself to learning challenges through difference, and using his gifts to live, purposefully, in order to help others find their purposes and fulfill their potential." You can follow Tanur on his journey through Facebook and Instagram at @peopleofpurposepodast

Bryan has been so generous to grant me republishing rights so we could share this with the People of Purpose audience.

Listen as we talk about:

  •  How intentionality and purpose are the key themes to both this interview and Tanur's life journey
  •  How Tanur chose the more risky choice while on the ledge with his brother, and it turned out to be the more foolish choice.
  •  How Tanur was frustrated with the rescue team because they focused their help on him, while his brother was still on the ledge and in danger.
  •  How he got his second concussion while he was angry because he was on the wrong life path and letting it effecting his day to day.
  •  How Tanur got to focus on himself while healing from his head injury and it helped him define his purpose and how to live for his own interests.
  •  How he dropped everything in America and moved to Thailand to pursue a more peaceful life.
  •  How he used the time and the new perspective to move forward from his last relationship.
  •  How Tanur is positive that he wouldn't be where he is now if not for the travel or the concussions.
  •  How his teaching job has allowed him to see that teaching is the most proactive force for good.
  •  How difficult walking the line between being in the world, but not of the world is for him.

Rank #9: 058: Bowen Dwelle – Revealing The Truth About Depression, Alcohol, and The Power Of Intuition

Podcast cover
Read more

Bowen Dwelle was born in 1970 and raised and lived most of his life in San Francisco. He now lives outside the machine, #homefree, and mobile in his van, spending much of his time in the high mountains of the American West.

He did not discover his purpose until recently. He fell into a first career in software at an early age because they had computers around the house and finds it very fascinating. He got good at working on it and there were a lot of interesting jobs that had to do with computers as the internet was just coming online in the mid-’90s. Even as he succeeded in his first career, he knew that he does not want to continue on that path. As Bowen said, “I didn’t know what my path was, but I knew that wasn’t it”.

Along the way, he managed to start a business on his own, a small conference that gradually became a successful business. He worked on it for many years that it became successful enough to be sold in early 2015.

The process of unearthing his purpose went in parallel with unwinding the depression that he had experienced for much of my life. He thinks it goes hand in hand. He was depressed because he didn’t have a purpose, and as a man, aimlessness is failure. He didn’t have purpose because his intuition wasn’t working—and for the same reason, he couldn’t move beyond his anxious and depressed state of mind. He couldn’t hear the messages or see the signs, so he didn’t know which way to go. As he gradually reawakened my intuition, he began to see indications of what mattered to him and of what was keeping him in such a low place emotionally. Finally, he emerged and was able to connect with his intuition, and with a sense of real purpose.

You can find out more about Bowen Dwelle in the links below:

Rank #10: 020: Silvia Turonova -- Your Pain is Your Personal Power: Ditch Your Struggles and Start Living Up to Your Purpose

Podcast cover
Read more
Silvia’s biggest passion is showing people how their emotional pain, their challenges and struggles contribute to their growth. As a young girl, she was growing up in a destructive environment which carried violence, drugs and alcohol abuse in different forms. After she completed her bachelor's degree, she knew that she needed some massive change, something crazy and life transforming. At the age of 22 she grabbed her suitcase and moved to the U.S. with $500 in her pocket and a dream in her heart. She was obsessed with changing her life and helping her family in her country. Even when she struggled at the beginning and was far away from what we call the "American dream", she knew that life isn't only black and white and if she can fix her mindset and see the world differently, she can change her life. She started to educate herself, she read a lot and she studied her own behavior. One question which triggered her mind more than anything was "How can we handle pain and struggle better and thrive in life in spite of challenges?"    About 2 and a half years ago, she launched her blog "Courage Within You" where she was sharing my stories, experience and knowledge with others. She knew that she found a lot of support in reading and learning from different self-development giants so she decided to do the same. After 2 years of blogging, she self-published her first book Courage Within You and now is in the process of building her own coaching business.

Rank #11: 054: Tanur Badgley - PoP’s 2nd Anniversary: An Interview with Your Host

Podcast cover
Read more

Two years into creating and hosting People of Purpose, I sustained the podcast through challenges such as an intensive one year master’s degree and teaching Residency program, the startup of a three state, three partner real estate investing business, and making the decision to get engaged, married, and move back to Thailand. And now People of Purpose has a team of five! Listen in this interview as I reflect on the different stages and challenges in my journey of purpose the day after my Thai fiance received her visa to the U.S.

In this interview I was in Bangkok and interviewed by my valued friend Nikita Yatchenko while he was visiting family in Moscow. I think our interview captured so many of the challenges people who are on purposeful paths are facing. Topics like staying true to the goals you’ve made to yourself as you and your circumstances change - pursuing money within purpose - maintaining self care while having an enormous amount of responsibility. These are each so important to develop a stance toward and have a proactive plan in place for how you will handle all the shifts that come when pursuing a personally purposeful path. I absolutely loved sharing my thoughts and experiences on these pressing and impactful topics.

 Listen as we talk about:

  •  How Tanur and Nikita met
  •  The beginning of Tanur's purpose journey
  •  Staying true to the goals you’ve made to yourself
  •  Personal integrity
  •  Pursuing money within purpose
  •  Maintaining self care while having an enormous amount of responsibility

After more than 30 years in business, owning as many as 14 businesses at one time with hundreds of employees, Greg found himself under the influence of Head Trash when the Real Estate market crashed. In denial, Greg made decisions that ultimately cost him tens of millions in capital and a year in prison. Going from massive success to the brokenness of failure, Greg came face to face with the ‘head-trash’ that had blocked his decision-making process and left him isolated as a leader. Now, Greg trains high-level teams the 4 essential GETS if they want to Break through the barriers of Head-Trash. Greg takes leaders into a training environment he calls The Practice Zone where these four essentials can be intentionally developed for success.

His first book, “Broken, how being broken unlocked the greatest success of my life”, details his life, leadership, success and the entire story of his legal battles and prison. Rank #14: 029: Marco Gonzalez - Bringing Consciousness of Genocides in Broad Daylight so the Next Generation Can Become Positive and Optimistic Actors for Change

Podcast cover
Read more
Marco Gonzalez, is the director of Yahad-In Unum (“Together In One”), is a Paris-based non-profit organization dedicated to discovering genocidal practices wherever they are found around the world, providing documented proof of crimes against humanity, and a leading voice of protest on behalf of all past and present victims of mass murder.    In accord with its original mission, Yahad – In Unum unveiled the lost history of World War II, the so-called “Holocaust by Bullets” in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Yahad – In Unum pioneered a proprietary application of modern forensic research to uncover the killings of more than 2.5 million Jews and Roma and the location of more than 2,300 mass murder sites, while interviewing more than 5,700 witness testimonies on the war crimes of the Nazi Death Squads. They are in a race against time because realistically, no more than 3 years remain to capture the eyewitness accounts of living witnesses and locate the remaining mass killing sites before all living testimony is silenced forever.   Marco’s work with YIU also has a deep personal resonance.  Growing up in Guatemala, he was keenly aware of the abysmal human rights record in that region, especially the systematic mass killings perpetrated by the military dictatorships of an estimated 200,000 ethnic Mayans, mostly during the early 1980s. Marco's work with the organization is now allowing him to raise awareness of the Holocaust to the Guatemalan population and also the possible parallel to what his home country has experienced in the last 30 years.     He helped found the first and only museum of the Holocaust in Central America. The Museum trains hundreds of educators each year in a state-supported curriculum that examines the “Holocaust by Bullets” with more than 50,000 students having visited the Museum so far.  In 2017, the Museum was nominated by The Leading Cultural Destination (LCD) Awards for “Best New Museum of the Year – South/Central America”   In November of 2017, Marco was instrumental in launching Yahad-In Unum’s "Holocaust by Bullets"- Enhanced Teacher Training seminar to over 50 current and future educators in Denver Colorado. The program is designed to equip educators with the tools and resources to teach the recently discovered history of WWII. In 2018, the program was customized for museum professionals during a weeklong program for over 130 museum guides and staff members of the Auschwitz Museum in Poland.  Marco is currently looking to expand the program across the US.    Listen as we Talk about:
  • The need to stay optimistic
  • The importance and responsibility we have for acting for the sake of society
  • How meeting a single person propelled him into this line of work
  • Understanding ISIS
  • The role reconstructing memory plays in giving people purpose
  • How we still use the same models for genocide today as we did with the Holocaust
  • Stories of atrocities and crimes against humanity from Marco's on the ground research

  • How media can be most effective and purposeful
  • Why we must break the culture of silence about genocide

Rank #18: 036: Sebastian Terry - Helping People Help People

Podcast cover
Read more

Known worldwide for pursuing an incredible list of 100 Things that he wants to achieve before he dies, Sebastian Terry’s story is surprisingly not about a bucket list. It’s about something more far-reaching: permission, choice, growth and connection.

Affected by a curious mind and the death of a close friend, Sebastian experienced a moment in his life where he asked himself a simple question: ‘Am I happy?’. The answer was NO, so he decided to pen down a list of 100 Things that he’d always wanted to achieve.

Following his heart and armed with nothing but a list, Sebastian's incredible story has grown from an entertaining tale of adventure into a global philanthropic movement that engages a growing tribe of hundreds of thousands to not just set meaningful goals, but pull the trigger and achieve them - all whilst helping others do the same.

“I thought initially that it would take me 100 Things to reach a state of fulfillment but it’s taken me 72 things to realize that ‘ticks’ are just the beginning. The key to growth and happiness is finding out who you are on a primal level and then being that person, each and every day.”

Today 100 Things acts as a conduit, introducing those in need of help to those who are able to help. This latest evolution is called Kindsum. In this way, the journey has become less about Sebastian's list and more about the art of helping. Sebastian spends his time traveling the world connecting strangers to help each other.

Turned into a best selling book (‘100 Things’), an ESPN documentary (‘100 things to do before you die’) and most recently a US-based reality TV show (‘100 Things') where Sebastian travels the world helping complete strangers achieve their specific dreams, 100 Things inspires people and organizations to gain perspective, think big and be the best they can be on every level so that others can follow suit.

From marrying a stranger in Las Vegas, delivering a baby in Canada and even representing the Mauritian national rugby team at the African Championships (they won!), Sebastian’s most profound moment was when he was first contacted by a suicidal stranger who needed help.

100 Things is no longer about one person, it’s about everybody.

Guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and inspire motivation, the 100 Things keynote is like no other and will re-engage, connect and inspire your organization to move forward as one. You can follow him on his journey through Facebook at @whatsonyourlist and Instagram at @seb100things

Listen as we talk about:

  • Why the greatest thing he's ever done has been helping someone else
  • His thought process to leave everything behind in pursuit of his list
  • The wonderful serendipity that has come into his life from fully pursuing his list
  • Why he never makes pursuing money a priority
  • Why the first step to enhancing your life is getting clarity with where you are now
  • How to learn your way into stepping into opportunities successfully
  • How to feel entirely empowered and in control of your life
  • How surfing allows him to step away from the intensity of pursuing your purpose
  • Why we're all just seeking connection
  • Why he thinks you live a better life by helping people instead of ticking things off your list

Rank #19: 046: Tina Olsen & Julie Breckenfelder - Reinvigorating Energy, Purpose, and Creativity

Podcast cover
Read more

During Julie's time as business-to-business marketer, she devoutly believed if you over-worked, put in the long hours, followed someone else's agenda, and consistently over delivered on everything… well, then people would notice, the fulfillment would flourish, and success would eventually come. The false hope was so real it was intoxicating. But she felt like a big-time imposter and failure in her heart! She had no idea why, until she slowed down and began to cut through the chaos and the noise. That’s when she started to notice a pattern. A pattern of “success” paired with the feeling that she didn’t deserve it. Why? Because she didn’t earn it… she just followed the rules. Anyone can do that.

Everything changed when she stopped being a robot and started listening to and trusting her gut. Now, Julie started intentionally honoring her values and is true to who she is at the core, which has propelled her into a world of more connection. It’s absolutely counter intuitive from the rules she used to follow. The healthier, happier, and more mindful she is the more fulfillment and success is invited into her life, her career, and her relationships.

Tina's journey began with her personal life "falling apart." Having all known structures crumble is a huge gift from the soul, as a clear-seeing emerges about what truly matters. A no bullcrap way of living permeates all aspects of life: all love, no more fear. One of the things she could now see clearly is that she's not here to force change upon anyone. Much of her corporate job consisted of being a change agent for people and groups who did not believe in the changes that were being made. Add this energy to a fear-based culture and the dissonance was deafening.

This inspired Tina to set forth on a vision of bringing love to corporate culture. The energy of love is what opens the doors to true creation, innovation, care, compassion, and a sense of purposeful connecting living. We spend more hours per day with our co-workers than our families and friends, why do we continue tolerating fear, toxicity, and chronic stress as a way of living this one precious life?

CORELEMENT is here to catalyze change through your only true competitive advantage: your people. We each had 15+ year, highly-successful corporate careers, and chose to leave. Why? Culture cancer. We each experienced the pain, chronic stress, and disconnection created by fear-based cultures and a definition of achievement that left out what truly mattered to us. Contact them at tina@corelementpartners.com

 Listen as we talk about:

  • The big visions I’ve downloaded from my soul...how much grip and fear do you have for those goals?
  • I only need a vision, I don't need the intermediary stuff
  • What is your mission, what are your values...people will step into their own zones of genius
  • I'm here to create a world of truth, cause through truth there is so much freedom
  • We are asked to live in scarcity and fear, and it's not truth
  • Being aware and noticing new things everyday
  • Taking me back to the pure, blissful child inside
