Great cloth textures and hair.The dirt is super cool too. Lara seems destined to be dirty. She’ll fall in water and get clean, but then moments later something happens to get her dirty again.Really nice to have a strong female protagonist.Gameplay is really fun. Controls are smooth and intuitive. Lots of variety in the game play.3rd person shooter aspect with bow, rifle, pistol, shotgun, and melee/hand-to-hand.Survival elements are fun. Hunting animals for xp and supplies.Lots of hidden things to find in the world.Optional tombs with some fun puzzles to solve. Although Lara starts giving hints a little too quickly for my taste.The slow motion during the “sort of cut scenes” are really fun. Gives you a chance to realize what you’re supposed to do and react without losing tension or momentum.The story is engaging.Poor Lara is constantly getting her ass kicked. Her ability to suffer injuries like being impaled and keep going after some minor first aid aren’t realistic, but it’s a video game.Sometimes making camp a stones-throw from enemies is kind of weird.The supernatural elements are weird too. The game has this gritty realism (for a video game) and then suddenly there’s supernatural stuff. Kind of bizarre and jarring. Age of Gaming E07 - Tales from the Borderlands, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, and Loadout

Today I’ll give my first impressions of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. You control a ranger named Talion with supernatural abilities. I won’t say more because I don’t want to spoil the story.The story in the beginning really hooks you into the character. I wish it was more interactive with some real choices to make, but it draws you in well.I’ve just started the game, and so far seems very sand-boxy, with all the good &amp; bad that entails.Graphics are very good. Animations are good as well.The movement’s a little off for me, in that you walk rather slowly, and when you sprint, it’s kind of a mad dash without a great feeling of control. The stealth movement is nice, though, and you can run while stealthing, which is what I usually do.Combat’s pretty nice, very reminiscent of Batman Arkham city (with a sword). Shooting your bow is very similar to The Last of Us Remastered or Tomb Raider Ultimate Edition. You also get a time dilation effect like with some of the neon powers in inFAMOUS Second Son.Combat’s a bit twitchy, but there’s some tactics too. You can also take on a lot of orcs singlehandedly if you fight smart, which is cool. Gotta hit your blocks though!I also like the slow-mo last ditch effort you get to save yourself when you’re about to die.The world seems large &amp; open so far (I’m only an hour or two in). It’s nice that you can take the route you want, attacking specific orc captains to further the story, doing side missions, or just killing whomever you come across.However, after the strong, spectator story in the beginning, the story seems rather lacking at this point. However, I’ve only completed two of the story missions, so it’s completely possible it will pick back up later.The nemesis mechanic is really cool. There’s one orc who’s beat me twice now, a dude with a large crossbow, who always seems to show up when I’ve bitten off more than I can chew and takes me out at range. He’s becoming quite the bad-ass, and I’m looking forward to finally going after him at some point.Your supernatural powers are pretty cool, and I really like how you get them. Again, no spoilers!I haven’t played nearly enough of this game to give a real judgment on it yet, but so far I’m loving what I see. The gameplay is a lot of fun, and the fighting mechanics are nice. The nemesis mechanic is awesome, and is the number one thing that pulls me back in the game. Already, in a few hours of play, this game has grabbed me in a way Dragon Age Inquisition hasn’t in close to 30 hours of play.I have to confess I’m not near the Tolkien fan that a lot of geeks are. Despite this being a game in Middle Earth, I really enjoy it, and I find the setting engaging me in a way it hasn’t since I first read The Hobbit in fifth grade.Nikki got this game, and I decided to try it after seeing a very favorable IGN review. Despite me thinking Tolkien is a bit over-rated, I’m enjoying this game and definitely prefer it to Dragon Age Inquisition (which I think is quite a bit over-rated). You control a ranger named Talion with supernatural abilities. I won’t say more because I don’t want to spoil the story.</p><p>The story in the beginning really hooks you into the character. I wish it was more interactive with some real choices to make, but it draws you in well.</p><p>I’ve just started the game, and so far seems very sand-boxy, with all the good &amp; bad that entails.</p><p>Graphics are very good. Animations are good as well.</p><p>The movement’s a little off for me, in that you walk rather slowly, and when you sprint, it’s kind of a mad dash without a great feeling of control. The stealth movement is nice, though, and you can run while stealthing, which is what I usually do.</p><p>Combat’s pretty nice, very reminiscent of Batman Arkham city (with a sword). Shooting your bow is very similar to The Last of Us Remastered or Tomb Raider Ultimate Edition. You also get a time dilation effect like with some of the neon powers in inFAMOUS Second Son.</p><p>Combat’s a bit twitchy, but there’s some tactics too. You can also take on a lot of orcs singlehandedly if you fight smart, which is cool. Gotta hit your blocks though!</p><p>I also like the slow-mo last ditch effort you get to save yourself when you’re about to die.</p><p>The world seems large &amp; open so far (I’m only an hour or two in). It’s nice that you can take the route you want, attacking specific orc captains to further the story, doing side missions, or just killing whomever you come across.</p><p>However, after the strong, spectator story in the beginning, the story seems rather lacking at this point. However, I’ve only completed two of the story missions, so it’s completely possible it will pick back up later.</p><p>The nemesis mechanic is really cool. Age of Gaming E06 - Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor First Impressions

Pretty straight-forward and tropic, nothing ground-breaking or especially evocative. However there IS a story (unlike Destiny), but not nearly as good a story as The Last of Us.The game is a LOT of fun! You feel very powerful zipping around the city blowing shit up left and right.The structure of the game is very similar to games like Batman Arkham City. You have an open world with numerous story and side missions you can do. You can also just run around fighting crime if you want. I really like this because during any given session you can advance through the story if you like, or just fuck around. Either way you’ll be gaining power and unlocking abilities.I love the fidelity of the graphics. I love that it’s in Seattle. Having lived in Seattle myself, there were many places I recognized, and that was awesome. Climbing to the top of the Space Needle was super cool. If you’re a resident or fan of Seattle, you have to play this game!I love the comments NPCs make as you pass by, whether your character is good or evil. Some of them are downright hilarious.This game is all about freedom. I love just exploring the city and fighting whatever foes I come across. Then, when I’m in a more serious goal-oriented mood, I’ll focus on clearing a specific area.I like that you’re progressively retaking the city during the course of the game.Placing graffiti around the city is kind of fun (at least the first few times), but seems a little irrelevant to the game overall. Also the fact that there are good and evil graffiti you can do seems silly and forced.I like the different powers you can unlock, and the different types of powers, e.g. smoke and neon. Just when I’d mastered smoke and might’ve started getting a little bored with it, I got access to neon. I like that you can switch between them. My only criticism that there are quite a few abilities that are analogous between the different types of powers, and I would’ve preferred they were all unique, but this is a minor complaint.There are things I like and don’t like about the morality mechanic. I like that your choices not only affect how NPCs interact with you, but also affect the powers you can unlock.There are two ways you advance your character. You earn your skill points to gain new abilities by draining power from generators and drones and such throughout the game. It’s nice because you can seek these out to unlock more skills as you like.Certain skills have a prerequisite of a certain level. You either gain light side or dark side xp that levels you. This is where the morality mechanic comes into play.However I don’t like how polarized black and white the morality is. You can’t really roleplay your guy, because any choices that aren’t black or white will ultimately slow your progression through your abilities. You basically have to choose good or evil and stick with it if you don’t want to be earning negative progress toward unlocking your abilities.So good karma is blue, evil karma is red. If you decide to be good, anytime you do something bad, you gain red karma, which basically cancels out your blue karma. So whatever alignment you choose, whenever you do something of the opposing alignment, you’re effectively earning negative xp that is slowing your progression.I’m not sure if you can earn negative xp to the point you lose a level or not. This would be interesting to test. If you can’t lose a level, and you’re good, then as soon as you leveled maybe you could go on an evil rampage without setting yourself back xp wise. However it will change how people in the city react to you.So trying to play a more realistic middle-of-the-road character will slow your progression and basically penalize you as far as the mechanics of the game. Mechanics-wise you’re better off doing one extreme or the other. I understand this from a mechanics point of view (you either have to avoid hurting civilians or have to deal with the police), but from an RP story point of view, it’s very unsatisfying.This black and white morality is really old-fashioned, out of date and over simplistic. I hope in the future we see less and less of this in modern games, as it doesn’t really have a place in the world anymore.I tried starting the game with a good and evil character. Seem pretty balanced as far as difficulty. With a good character you have to be more careful not to kill civilians, however this is balanced by the fact that with an evil character you have to fight the police on top of everything else.Overall I’m really enjoying this game. I’ll have to give you an update once I’ve finished it. The gameplay is really fun, and I love the open world aspect of it (note this is real open-world, not fake open world like in Destiny, you really can go anywhere, there aren’t any invisible walls that will kill you if you cross them).The black and white morality system is tiresome and does somewhat lessen the enjoyment of this otherwise excellent game. However, it does work with the mechanics in an interesting way and does fit in with the over-simplified world view common in comic books (which this game is very much like). So if you’re into that, you may enjoy the morality aspect. However for someone like me who enjoys RP and story elements in games, it does kick you out of the story a bit.The story could be better, but it’s not bad. Just don’t expect anywhere near the depth of a game like The Last of Us.Most importantly though, this game is a lot of fun, and is a great example of why PS4 is awesome. Age of Gaming E03 - Diablo III Ultimate Evil Edition

Today I’ll be giving my first impressions of Dragon Age Inquisition. Unfortunately, Dragon Age is no exception to this.Character creationYou get a lot of options to try to make your character look the way you want. It may, however, be too many options for you. Also, it seems a bit overdone considering the character graphics for this game aren’t really that great.Only two voices to choose from.Seems over-complicated considering the level of graphics.Takes a long time, and there’s no way to save a look you like in case you decide to go back later and play a different class.The options aren’t “intelligent”. It’s very easy to end up with a very deformed looking character. Make sure to check from all angles often.Despite the seeming large number of options, they’re actually quite limited in variety, instead there are a lot of versions of the same thing.Eg. there aren’t many hair styles, and the skin colors are actually quite limited if you’re going for a specific, realistic skin color.VisualsEnvironment graphics &amp; detail is pretty good.Character graphics are not very good. Character animations are subpar, and motion capture is minimal to the point that I wonder if it was even used. Watching people talk, it feels more like a ps2 game or a PC game from 10+ years ago. I feel like Uncharted 3 on ps3, for instance, had far better character graphics than this.There are f2p MMOs with better character graphics than this.People’s teeth are really screwed up. Don’t look at them while they’re talking, or you’ll regret it.The fabrics aren’t rendered well. They don’t look real. Look more like plastic than fabric.Don’t even get me started on peoples’ hair.ContentThere is a lot to do in this game. It will keep you busy for a long time, especially if you’re a completionist.Lots of side quests. It works out quite nicely. You can just explore if you want and do things along the way, or you can focus on one area at a time and get everything done.I like the complexity of the game. There’s a lot to do. You can either just handle what you come across, or you can be more strategic.There seems to be a lot that has been established in the previous games. As someone who didn’t play them, it’s pretty confusing. You’re plopped in the middle of a story with no idea what’s going on. Then you’re forced to make dialogue choices with no frame of reference or idea what choice you should make.Also, as is common in all Bioware games I’ve played, the dialogue choices listed and what your character says once you actually choose one are almost always very different. I’ve yet to determine if the choices really matter much at all. So far they don’t seem to.Game PlayYou can choose between third person and tactical combat modes. This way you can get into the nitty gritty when you need or want to (difficult encounters) or play it fast and loose when that’s what you want (easier encounters).I like the variety of builds for the different classes, the number of ability trees. However this can be a bit overwhelming when new to the game. You can, however, respec, by going to the vender pole at the armorer in Haven. It’s only 1 gold the first time, and then around 350 the next time.The leveling feels about right for me. A lot of MMOs and RPGs have you leveling way too fast.I like the Power mechanic. It gives an in-world reason and justification for doing side quests. It also gives you a feeling of progression above and beyond experience and leveling.I also like the Influence mechanic and Inquisition ranks. Again another way to progress other than leveling.I like that you can map your abilities how you want.Neither the third person nor the tactical combat are done very well. The game would’ve been better with just one done well, as opposed to having both, but they’re mediocre.Third person doesn’t feel quite right. The movement and positioning is kind of clunky.In tactical mode, you can’t control the zoom of the camera. It’s awkward and often hard to see what you want to see.Dragon Age is trying to please two very different types of players here, but in the end will probably not please either.You can’t see relationship scores with NPCsMoving about the world, jumping over and climbing terrain feels buggy. Again par for the course with Bioware games.Gameplay seems overly complex with having to control and advance 4 characters. I’d much rather play a game with one character. Now you can let the AI handle the other characters’ actions and advancement, but I’m not sure how well you’ll do in the game doing this. You basically have to learn all the classes and specialties in order to make the most of your group. Again, I’d rather focus on one character.Also makes your choice of character pretty irrelevant except for cut scenes and when you’re in Haven. It’s more about making a character that fits well with the group you will play, as opposed to making a character you want to play. This is more of a party simulation game than an RPG to me. Jury is still out for me if the party mechanics will be an annoyance to me or a deal breaker in the end, but I definitely don’t see it as a plus.The religion in the game gets really tiresome, but that’s fantasy, I guess. The whole “chosen one” thing is so cliché it’s a real turn off. A little originality with the plot would’ve gone a long way. It’s bad enough to have all the religion in the game, but your character’s nose is always shoved into it. You can’t get away from it.BugsGraphic and animation bugs galore. This seems to be a staple of every Bioware game I’ve ever played. They just don’t seem to have good character artists, and their animations are subpar. They also don’t seem able or willing to produce a game that isn’t filled with animation bugs.Bugs include people’s feet being inside the terrain instead of on top of it, NPCs disappearing and reappearing, or pathing errors with NPCs pathing in “fast motion”.There are also conversation bugs, where you’ll enter a conversation and the game will either freeze, or there will be no audio in the conversation. These both require restarting the game, and perhaps leaving progress as you can’t save before restarting.Sometimes you will lose sound in combat. Sometimes it will eventually come back, sometimes it won’t.Maybe some of these bugs will be fixed in patches, but considering this is Bioware, I doubt it. I recently played SWTOR and there are still animation and graphic bugs we complained about in the beta, and that’s a PC MMO, which is much easier to fix than a console game. Bioware just doesn’t seem to care about the quality of their character animations; that or they just really aren’t very good at it.VerdictFor me, the jury’s still out on this game. There is a lot to do, and a lot to keep you busy. However the story is very cliché and unoriginal, and seems very shallow. I’m not sure if it will keep my interest throughout the game.The awkwardness of the combat may also end up being more or less of an issue. Only time will tell if it’s something that I eventually get tired of dealing with, or if I decide the other aspects of the game make it worthwhile.The appearance of having options in conversations with NPCs is appealing, however it’s yet to be seen if they really matter. So far the game is very linear, even with these options.Although the graphics and animation bugs don’t keep me from enjoying the game, they are an annoyance. The quality of graphics and animations come nowhere near that of The Last of Us Remastered, Infamous Second Son or Destiny. I do feel like I’m playing a sixth generation game on an eighth generation console.I suspect I’ll finish the game, and it will get me through quite a few winter weeks, but I don’t think it will be one of my favorites on the PS4.TipsConsider playing a rogue or warrior. You start out with a  sword &amp; board warrior, archer rogue and mage as NPCs in your party.If you get the game at Target, you get a free strategy guide (or you did when I bought it) which is very helpful. I avoid the spoilers though, but great for looking at class abilities, etc.Buy the disc. Always buy the disc! That way you can share the game, and you can resell it!More on Dragon Age in the futureI’m sure I’ll be playing this game for a while, so I’ll probably bring it up on the show again in the future, maybe after I’ve beat the game. Again, I’d rather focus on one character.</p><p>Also makes your choice of character pretty irrelevant except for cut scenes and when you’re in Haven. It’s more about making a character that fits well with the group you will play, as opposed to making a character you want to play. This is more of a party simulation game than an RPG to me. Jury is still out for me if the party mechanics will be an annoyance to me or a deal breaker in the end, but I definitely don’t see it as a plus.</p><p>The religion in the game gets really tiresome, but that’s fantasy, I guess. The whole “chosen one” thing is so cliché it’s a real turn off. A little originality with the plot would’ve gone a long way. It’s bad enough to have all the religion in the game, but your character’s nose is always shoved into it. You can’t get away from it.</p><h3>Bugs</h3><p>Graphic and animation bugs galore. This seems to be a staple of every Bioware game I’ve ever played. They just don’t seem to have good character artists, and their animations are subpar. They also don’t seem able or willing to produce a game that isn’t filled with animation bugs.</p><p>Bugs include people’s feet being inside the terrain instead of on top of it, NPCs disappearing and reappearing, or pathing errors with NPCs pathing in “fast motion”.</p><p>There are also conversation bugs, where you’ll enter a conversation and the game will either freeze, or there will be no audio in the conversation. These both require restarting the game, and perhaps leaving progress as you can’t save before restarting.</p><p>Sometimes you will lose sound in combat. Sometimes it will eventually come back, sometimes it won’t.</p><p>Maybe some of these bugs will be fixed in patches, but considering this is Bioware, I doubt it. I recently played SWTOR and there are still animation and graphic bugs we complained about in the beta, and that’s a PC MMO, which is much easier to fix than a console game. Bioware just doesn’t seem to care about the quality of their character animations; that or they just really aren’t very good at it.</p><h3>Verdict</h3><p>For me, the jury’s still out on this game. There is a lot to do, and a lot to keep you busy. However the story is very cliché and unoriginal, and seems very shallow. I’m not sure if it will keep my interest throughout the game.</p><p>The awkwardness of the combat may also end up being more or less of an issue. Only time will tell if it’s something that I eventually get tired of dealing with, or if I decide the other aspects of the game make it worthwhile.</p><p>The appearance of having options in conversations with NPCs is appealing, however it’s yet to be seen if they really matter. So far the game is very linear, even with these options.</p><p>Although the graphics and animation bugs don’t keep me from enjoying the game, they are an annoyance. The quality of graphics and animations come nowhere near that of The Last of Us Remastered, Infamous Second Son or Destiny. I do feel like I’m playing a sixth generation game on an eighth generation console.</p><p>I suspect I’ll finish the game, and it will get me through quite a few winter weeks, but I don’t think it will be one of my favorites on the PS4.</p><h3>Tips</h3><p>Consider playing a rogue or warrior. You start out with a  sword &amp; board warrior, archer rogue and mage as NPCs in your party.</p><p>If you get the game at Target, you get a free strategy guide (or you did when I bought it) which is very helpful. I avoid the spoilers though, but great for looking at class abilities, etc.</p><p>Buy the disc. Always buy the disc! That way you can share the game, and you can resell it!</p><h3>More on Dragon Age in the future</h3><p>I’m sure I’ll be playing this game for a while, so I’ll probably bring it up on the show again in the future, maybe after I’ve beat the game. Realistic rendering of the world and people.Excellent motion capture. You can really connect with &amp; empathize with the characters because the dialogue &amp; acting is so good, and the motion capture realistically portrays facial expressions and body language. Each character’s personality comes across as much as in a movie.There is so much detail in the world! Clothing and hair are realistically rendered (even games that are otherwise excellent graphically often fail here). The little details in the world really help with immersion, and are worth noticing. The griminess of places that have been abandoned for years is realistically rendered. I’ve been in abandoned houses, and it was very authentic.The sound is amazing! Not only are the sound effects realistic and well done, things like position and distance are done accurately as well. This is an area that fails in other games, like Destiny, where people or creatures in the next room over or up or down a story, sound the same as if they’re in the same room with you. In The Last of Us Remastered you can rely on your ears to tell you where opponents are.The sound effects really enhance the immersion. I really recommend wearing a good headset when you play this game. It’s like you’re there. I use the Playstation Gold Wireless stereo headset by Sony.The music is artfully done as well, enhancing the mood and suspense, while at the same time staying in the background where it belongs. The music doesn’t overpower like in so many other games. It swells when appropriate, then fades away again.The high fidelity graphics and sound make this game super immersive. You really get into it and feel like you’re there. I found my heart racing in tense situations, and felt the adrenaline rush when I was getting my ass kicked. The game is actually frightening at times due to the ambiance and suspense. Hearing clickers in the dark really upped the pucker factor for me.I played the game on the normal default difficulty. Overall I would say the game is not difficult. I had a pretty easy time of it, however there were specific encounters that were skill checks and took me a few tries to get past.I love that you don’t just send out a spray of bullets at everything in this game. Resource management is extremely important. In the beginning I wasn’t careful enough taking my shots and frequently ran into ammo problems until I learned to be more careful.I enjoyed the crafting and character advancement in the game. I feel it found a good balance between giving you some good customization options without it getting overcomplicated like it does in many RPGs and MMOs.The controls were easy and intuitive, and the gameplay was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the stealth, hiding and ambush mechanics, which I tend to enjoy in any game that has them. There are definitely situations where charging in will get you killed and you need to be stealthy.I thought there was a good variety of weapons to use, without it going overboard. Again I think there was a perfect balance between not enough and too much.If you just got the PS4, I highly recommend this as your first game. Probably not worth it if you played the original on PS3, but the graphics are a lot better from what I’ve seen.You also get the Left Behind with it, which was DLC on PS3. It’s alright, I’m glad I didn’t pay extra for it though.The story is amazing with more than one twist and turn along the way. I highly enjoyed it. It also does a great job at really pulling you in in the beginning.I am NOT a fan of zombies (I think they’re dumb in most IPs), but I really enjoyed this game. The infected are terrifying and lethal, not at all campy or stupid.Playing this game is like being in an interactive movie. This is the best that next gen gaming has to offer! Even if you’re not into horror, you owe it to yourself to play this game. I’m usually not into horror myself, finding much of it stupid, unbelievable and not scary, instead relying on cheap “jump scares” (jump startles really). This game isn’t campy or stupid, it’s something believable you can take seriously, and it is at times truly scary and horrifying.Also the graphics and sound when you blow someones head off or light them on fire with a Molotov cocktail are quite satisfying and visceral.I’m not one to replay a game on higher diff, but I’ve actually considered it for The Last of Us. Just like I will often want to see a really good movie a second time, I’d like to play it again. Not sure about higher diff though, might be too much for me!TipsWatch your resources! Take your shots carefully. Save ammo every way you can. You will never have enough. Make every shot count.Use stealth and ambush tactics whenever possible. It allows you to take out a foe without taking damage. Health is another resource to manage in this game as making med packs uses resources you could use to make other things like Molotov cocktails. Also, if you’re stealthy you can often take out foes one-by-one as opposed to them all coming at you at once.Make use of the bottles/bricks. I never did figure out if one is better than the other in certain situations, or if they’re the same. I tended to use the bottles for distraction and the bricks to attack and stun, assuming that would be the way to go, but I don’t know if there’s anything mechanical in the game that rewards that strategy. Stunning an opponent before you attack can help with a sneak attack, and you can use bottles/bricks to lure opponents away from you or to an ambush spot.Become proficient with the bow. It’s a great way to stealthfully take out foes at range. Once you get the feel for it, you can actually be very accurate with it.Upgrade your long rifle to get armor piercing ASAP.  This really helps with the bloated infected, especially the first time you encounter one, which I found really challenging.If things are going badly, run away and hide. This is much better than dying. Also learn to anticipate when a strategy isn’t going to work and withdraw early in order to avoid wasting ammunition.Molotov cocktails are great to use on shriekers. It’s also a lot of fun.Explore, explore, explore. You’ll find pills, which are definitely worth looking for as they allow you to purchase advancements. You’ll also find parts to mod your weapons and make things like nail bombs, Molotov cocktails and first aid kits. You also get some trophies if you find everything (which I didn’t).My one complaint is it’s not always obvious which direction will lead you to a cut scene and a new area. Once this happens you can’t go back, and more than once I didn’t get to explore an area because I tended to somehow always pick the way that took me to the next area. It would be nice if you got a dialogue asking if you wanted to go on before taking you past that point of no return.
