Can I switch careers and still be successful?
Brian Butler-Au, founder and CEO of SuckerPunch Entertainment, is my guest today. SuckerPunch Entertainment is one of the most respected and established athlete management and marketing companies in all of Mixed Martial Arts. Representing fighters such as Rose Namajunas, Weili Zhang, Jens Pulver, Felice Herring, Carla Esparza, Angela Hill and Paul Felder plus dozens more top tier fighters gives Brian and SuckerPunch quite the insight as to the changes in marketing, sponsorships and management for the fastest growing sport in the US, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
We talk about the struggles of scheduling and traveling to so many different states and countries for fighters and how the fighter determines if they want SuckerPunch at the fights or to be hands off during fight week. Obviously the worldwide lockdown has affected the fighters and even the sponsorship opportunities available to the fighters. Brian and his team are working thru the lockdown issues and continuing to make their fighters feel represented.

If you like the podcast, I would love it if you left me a review! Also, feel free to contact me directly via DM regarding this episode or anything in the podcast that may have related to you

For 12 years Brian owned and operated a full service ad agency on the east coast. Working globally with international clientele as well as major US clients such as the NFL, NHL and several fortune 500 companies, Brian has now turned his focus into sports management and marketing. “I was so surprised to see how fast the sport was growing but how green the infrastructure of the business was for the athletes. The opportunity presented itself to come into this space and make an impact for the athletes and the sport so I took it.” Taking a major leap of faith Brian shut the doors on his ad agency in 2009 to focus on building a new company, SuckerPunch Entertainment. In just a few short years SuckerPunch Entertainment is one of the most recognized management companies in the sport today.

My interview with Traci took some wild turns as she discussed her career as a professional beach volleyball player. She spoke about her struggles with bulimia in college and the need to switch schools even after a successful freshman year. She then started her professional beach volleyball career and had some success but not what she was hoping for. It's rare to have a professional athlete speak so openly about her struggles with weight loss, sexual assault and self doubt. After moving around a bit and even switching careers her husband, Matt, encouraged her to give beach volleyball another try and give it everything she’s got.
She has learned to elevate her game and have gratitude for the people in her life. She is continuing to share her story and work ethic with local high school players as well as writing a book on how to get recruited for younger players.

He had to convince his brother to originally be a part of the show but now they are 100% into growing their podcast listener base.

“It’s about finding that additional revenue source, because if you’re only dependent on one income stream and that income stream disappears you’re in some deep doo doo.” ~Hernan Sias on why he built his podcast show

While Hernan traveled for his real estate business, the main reason I wanted to chat with him on my show was to hear the how’s and why’s he started his podcast show with his brother and to hear what he thinks of the future of the platform. It’s always great spending time with someone that is positive about their future even while going thru the downsides of the Covid19 lockdown.

Is it okay to fight like a girl?
That would be a compliment if being compared to this week’s guest, Vanessa Demopoulos. Vanessa is a professional mixed martial arts fighter, jiu jitsu fighter, author and exotic dancer. She has her first pro title fight on July 17 and she is excited about the chance to show her skills at LFA 85 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. One of the subjects we discussed is the differences in her training after switching to the Blackhouse Gym in California from Ohio.

“One of the things with traveling so often and so much is that you meet really cool people all around the country and all around the world and I love being able to stay in touch with them.” ~Vanessa Demopoulos on how she fills her travel downtime

Vanessa was the first professional fighter guest on the show and she was great with sharing her stories and travel experiences. Make sure to check out her upcoming fights and you can watch several of her previous fights on YouTube. It was great meeting and hearing someone being so positive during the lockdown and looking forward to her future.

Travis Luther | a punk rocker turns to entrepreneurship and the business world

Podcast cover

How do you know if you’re ready to be an entrepreneur?

My guest today, Travis Luther, is the president of a media firm, author, speaker and entrepreneur. I’ve met many entrepreneurs in my lifetime but Travis was actually a professor of entrepreneurship for MSU Denver. His company, Law Father, provides case development tools to law firms. Travis also has the experience of playing and touring for his pop-punk band when he was younger.

“There was just something inside me that realized that probably my path out of poverty was going to be entrepreneurship and being my own business owner.” ~Travis Luther

Travis is practicing what he preaches about having multiple business and streams of income. It was great speaking with him and inspiring to hear someone else expanding their existing resources. We are all given the same 24 hours a day. It really shows how some people maximize their days and time. Make sure to check out Travis on his social media accounts and website.
