James McGee Returns – GPYS 218

The Montreal podcast that asks James McGee: How do you kill your enemy: Up close with a knife, poison or sniper rifle? As asked by the suddenly terrifying Sean Campbell from TSN 690.

When all of this whole Covid-19 stuff started going down one man was brave enough to declare that he was “pro-Covid”. That man was James Mcgee. Where you and I felt drained by the pandemic, James Mcgee saw opportunity.

The opportunity to start a talkshow on Instagram.

Except unlike all those other talk shows on Instagram, this one is still happening 7 months later. And now it’s on Twitch.

Listen now, enjoy the show, and check out “At Home with James” because let’s be real, what else are you doing right now? You’re supposed to be staying indoors.

Important links that we talk about:

As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Aural Turpitude!

Chris Venditto is another funny person in Montreal who you can see all over the place and if you don’t want to miss him take the stage you should follow him on all the socials. He’s @chrisvenditto on Twitter and Instagram so you should follow him on those two things. He also produces shows with the guys at Perfect Bite Productions who you should also follow on Instagram and on Facebook.

Keith does all sorts of things here on 9to5.cc, he works with the other founders on 9to5 (illustrated), co-hosts our two podcasts: The 9to5 Entertainment System and Go Plug Yourself and blogs here as The Perspicacious Geek.

The Montreal podcast that dares to ask Sean Campbell: Keith, Chris and Lawrence – Fuck, Marry, Kill? (because Allie Pearse made us).

We take advantage of the fact that Inés is still on hosting hiatus (host-atus?) to devote a full episode to… SPORTS!

Sean Campbell from TSN 690 joins Chris, Lawrence and I to talk about being a play by play announcer, the joys of call in radio shows, hanging up on callers, Pierre McGuire and Lawrence and I both kind of zone out when Venditto and Sean talk about the NFL.

You can listen to Sean over on TSN 690 all over the place. He calls the Laval Rocket games, features on multiple shows and produces even more. Check him out on Twitter @seanrcampbell for the hottest takes. Hot takes!

Oh, and listen to this show.

The Montreal podcast that asks comedian Allie Pearse: If you had to trademark a slogan, what would it be? And: Do you drink before creating/performing? (asked by Gonzalo Coloma (YES Montreal) & Daian Tang (CHOKITEM) back in episode 215).

If you haven’t had the chance to check out Allie’s sex positive showcase “Slut Parade“in Toronto then do yourself a favor and put it right up there on your list of things to do when all of this pandemic horror is over. Allie Pearse not only produces that amazing show but is also a tremendously talented comic who also happens to have recently landed a writing gig on a little show you might have heard of called Letterkenny.

We talk comedy during a pandemic, being a dirty comedian and take shots at assholes who don’t understand that they need to grow up and deal with their privileged bullshit.

It’s a great show everyone, trust me.

The Montreal podcast that asks Gonzalo Coloma (YES Montreal) & Daian Tang (CHOKITEM) from What the Pop!: If you could travel back in time and see any show, what show would it be? (as asked by Joey Elias back on GPYS 214).

Where do we even begin with this one? There’s just so much going on.

The most important thing is that both of our wonderful guests on this episode will be a part of the What the Pop! Pop-Up Exhibition this weekend. What is that? Glad you asked.

On Saturday September 5th YES Montreal is bringing together over 50 talented, emerging artists from across Quebec to help them gain exposure and sell their art. You can head to Riverside (5020 Rue St-Ambroise) or Centre St-Jax (1439 Rue Ste-Catherine St) between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm this Saturday to see live music and performances, buy one of a kind art work, mixed media, fasion items, jewelry, crafts and probably a million other things.

Our guests are Gonzalo Coloma, who works as an Artist Coach for YES Montreal and also used to run his own circus (yes, we get to that) and Daian Tang who has worked in the fashion industry for 15 years and runs Chokitem (accesories, jewelery and more).

We talk about making it as an artist in the time of Covid-19, how to stay inspired, how to sell yourself and some of the most delicious meals we’ve heard about to date in 5 questions.

Listen to the show, head out to the pop-up exhibition and support the artists online as What the Pop! will be opening a virtual version of the exhibition sometime in the next week or so.

Joey Elias Returns! GPYS 214

The Montreal podcast that asks Joey Elias: What is the one major law you would break if you could? (asked by Coko Galore and Ophira Calof in Episode 213).

Joey Elias is one of the pillars of the Montreal comedy scene. As Uncle Ben told Peter Parker: with great power comes great responsibility. To that end Joey has also become synonymous with a number of charitable organizations in and around the city, raising money and awareness for causes and members of the community that need help.

One of those causes is exactly what has brought Joey to the show today: Joey Elias and the Comedy All Stars at the Royalmount Drive-In. Joey has been putting together this event for 9 years running and even though this year will be different (it’s being held at a drive-in instead of the traditional venue of Club Soda), the cause remains the same and in many ways is even more important than ever before.

The event will be raising money for 03: On Our Own, with 25$ from each ticket sold going straight to help out O3.

So get your tickets now while you still can over at Eventbrite and head to the Royalmount Drive-In on August 26th to see Joey Elias, Harrison Weinreb, Amanda McQueen, Rodney Ramsay and GPYS’ own Lawrence Corber and support a great cause.

Also also note: This was erroneously published as episode 218, I realize now that it is episode 215. Counting is hard.

Our Cities On Our Stages 2020 – Coko Galore and Ophira Calof (GPYS 213)

Podcast cover
Read more

The Montreal podcast that asks the organizers of Our Cities On Our Stages: “Would you rather be a robot, and how much of a robot? Arms? Legs? Whole body?” (as asked by The Boids way back in episode 202!)

Coko Galore and Ophira Calof are our guests (remember when we had guests on this show?) this week to talk about the 5th Annual ‘Our Cities On Our Stages’. What is ‘Our Cities On Our Stages’?

“It’s a diversity and inclusion symposium, providing tools to BIPOC, disabled and LGBTQ2S+ comedy artists to pave a new way for comedy. This year, “Our Cities on Our Stages” is entirely online, opening the discussion to a global audience. From Friday August 7th to Sunday August 9th, participants will engage with topics including authenticity in storytelling, building community centred productions, and creating online shows. The recent launch of Bad Dog Comedy TV will be used as a case study and model.” (From Bad Dog Theatre Official Website).

Coko is the Artistic and Managing Director of the event and Ophira is a Curator and Producer. Normally the symposium takes place in Toronto but this year, like many other things, it is taking place entirely online! Which means that it doesn’t matter if you live in Toronto, Montreal or literally anywhere else on the planet,  you can still attend!

So listen now for a lively chat about the MCU (again?), Watchmen, making comedy more accessible and be sure to check out the event on Facebook, join the Facebook Group and obviously feel free to donate to help make sure this year’s free edition is a success!

IMPORTANT: Register here as space is actually limited to the panels and you must register in order to attend!

Enjoy the show!
