If an ancient Jewish wedding ran out of wine, it meant immense shame on the bride and groom and all the guests.  While we don’t exactly have the same type of cultural expectations of our weddings banquets as in Jesus' day with a seven-day banquet and the problem if we run out of wine, if we’re talking about marriage in particular and broadly, the 6th commandment and God’s gift of physical intimacy, there is one thing that always hangs around if something goes wrong or this gift is abused:  Shame.   But that’s why Jesus being at this wedding and performing a sign is so important, so restorative, so refreshing, for those who feel shame.   Sermon on John 2:1-11 by Rev. Luke tells us that at eight days old and again at 40 days old, the infant Jesus went to the temple to fulfill the law.  The journey climaxes with Jesus teaching at the temple, ends with the temple curtain being torn in two, and then Luke tells us that immediately after Jesus ascended into heaven where do the disciples go? Back to the temple. Sinai was terrifying to the people of Israel.  The thundering voice of the Lord puts sinners in fear of death (Deut 18:15–19).  He had come to test them, just as He had done with Abraham.  Just as God provided a substitute for Abraham, God also would raise up a prophet like Moses, the Messiah, the Christ. But not in all his might and glory, rather, God came to His people veiled in human flesh. As John the Baptist proclaimed, He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Aziz’s life has been a story of chance – and choice. As Michael pieces together Aziz’s journey from Sudan to Manus, he realises Aziz has been searching for a safe place for about eight years. So what gives him the ability, and the energy, to speak out? How has Aziz fought for so long, and what makes him want to be ‘the messenger’? <blockquote>‘I’m pretending like I’m really happy, and laugh, and you know, smiling on the phones and doing stuff like that – so they feel like, “Oh, my son is really living in a good environment”. Jocko Willink (@jockowillink) is one of the scariest human beings imaginable. He is a lean 230 pounds. He is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert who used to tap out 20 Navy SEALs per workout. He is a legend in the Special Operations world. His eyes look through you more than at you. He rarely does interviews, if ever. Jocko enlisted in the Navy after high school and spent 20 years in the SEAL Teams, first as an enlisted SEAL operator and then as a SEAL officer.
