Standard Orbit 290: A Friendship That Defined Them Both

Mind Meld.

In 2001, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy sat down for a candid (as candid as can be expected in front of a film crew anyway) conversation about their lives, their friendship, and of course Star Trek. This was the documentary Mind Meld: Secrets Behind The Journey Of A Lifetime, and this week on Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart discuss this peek into the minds of the two men most synonymous with Star Trek.

In what way did Nimoy's understanding of show business differ from Shatner in their early days? How did Shatner's casting as the then-new Captain Kirk influence Nimoy's performance as Spock? Why could Shatner stop smoking cold turkey while Nimoy battled addiction for decades? And what does all this say about both men? All this and more in this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen!

Essential Season One TOS.

There are Top Ten lists ... and there are TOP TEN lists. This
episode of Standard Orbit is about the latter. Many online lists,
from prominent geek culture websites, favor Season One heavily and
with good reason. Rarely if ever, are Seasons Two and Three as
equally represented. These lists also cite City on the Edge of
Forever as being the quintessential TOS episode of all time - if
not for all of Star Trek. Feeling that these lists were imbalanced
and incomplete, we wanted to look at each season of TOS for what we
would recommend as "essential viewing."

Our goal for this episode, and for the upcoming TOS Essentials
podcasts, is to offer a new and perhaps in many ways - different
"best of" list for each season so that newcomers to The Original
Series can use our recommendations as an essentials starter kit;
episodes chosen from each season and not heavily influenced by any
one in particular. We believe our listeners will truly enjoy these
comprehensive recommendations compiled by their very own Refit
Crew; podcasters and friends they have come to know and trust here
on Standard Orbit.

Hikaru
Sulu.

Few characters in Star Trek experience actual advancement in
their careers. Even fewer of them go through as many random jobs to
get there as Hikaru Sulu. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike
and Drew take a close look at Mr. Sulu, the head of astrosciences
turned botanist turned helmsman turned starship captain. We talk
about his many adventures on the Enterprise, how he got his own
command, and how awesome of a captain he must have been.

Standard Orbit 176: Time Traveling Without a License   The Temporal Violations of James T. Kirk.   In the fan favorite DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations," the Department of Temporal Investigations laments over James T. Kirk having the largest record of temporal violations on file; seventeen to be exact. We might not have seen all of them on screen, but Kirk did indeed often find himself in time periods that were not his own. In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore take the time to travel through Kirk and co.'s many escapees across the space time continuum, the mechanisms that brought them backward and forward through time, and the various schools of thought on time travel itself. Dissecting Spock's Brain.

On this episode of Standard Orbit, we prep for surgery and
perform a deep dissection and examination of what Star Trek fans
have labeled as the "worst" episode ever in the history of The
Original Series, and was even parodied as a stage
production in 2004 for a limited run in Irvine, California at the
Irvine Improv! William Shatner, in his autobiography Up Till
Now, and in his memoirs Star Trek: Memories, called this one of the
series' worst episodes; a "tribute" to NBC executives who slashed
the show's budget and placed it in a bad time slot.

There was a great deal of unrest happening behind the scenes at
the beginning of Star Trek's third season. Gene Coon was trying to
complete his writing contract and director Marc Daniels felt
marginalized by executive producer Fred Freiberger. The show budget
was always under pressure which in turn forced co-producer Robert
Justman and Fred Freiberger to constantly redirect creative to fit
production, increasing tensions between them and the NBC front
offices. Did these underlying forces ultimately affect the return
The Original Series on September 20th, 1968?
