Anthony Benevenia emigrated from a small village on the southern coast of Italy to industrial Newark, New Jersey, spending his days as a luxury men's tailor at the renowned American Shops on Broad Street. His great granddaughter, Cara Benevenia, has carried on her family's legacy, designing and manufacturing quality handbags right here in New Jersey!Segment 1Cara takes us through her background going through Marist College's fashion design program. There were difficult times, Cara actually failed out of the program her sophomore year. But by her senior year, Cara received the highest award at graduation by creating the most outstanding collection. Then she started working in the fashion industry, working various jobs before deciding to go out on her own.  Today in New Jersey HistoryIt was on June 27, 1862 that the First New Jersey Brigade, composed of the First, Second, Third and Fourth New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiments, fought its first major engagement of the Civil War at Gaines Mill, Virginia. The brigade arrived on the field in the late afternoon to reinforce the hard pressed Union forces. Of the 2,300 men the brigade brought to the battle, 1,072 were killed, wounded or captured. The captured included most of the men of the Fourth New Jersey, surrounded as the units to their left and right withdrew.Segment 2We learn about how Cara's handbags are made and how she put together her designs. Joe Louis, who defeated Braddock for the title the following year, proclaimed him the bravest man he ever fought. The movie "Cinderella Man" was based on Braddock. Courtney Roselle has appeared on The Rock's Titan Games on NBC, is a fitness model, an accomplished athlete, personal trainer and all-around badass. Her journey should serve as an inspiration for women everywhere. Segment 1Courtney takes us through her background growing up as a "feminine tomboy" and how people were always trying to put her in a box. Even though the early part of Courtney's story was difficult for her, it is what started shaping who she is today. She began exploring interests, played sports, went to college and played basketball, and decided she wanted to get into modeling. Despite constant rejection, it took a chance encounter for Courtney to land her very first modeling gig, in Vogue. Courtney Roselle has appeared on The Rock's Titan Games on NBC, is a fitness model, an accomplished athlete, personal trainer and all-around badass. Her journey should serve as an inspiration for women everywhere.  Segment 1 Courtney takes us through her background growing up as a "feminine tomboy" and how people were always trying to put her in a box. Even though the early part of Courtney's story was difficult for her, it is what started shaping who she is today. Homelessness is an issue throughout the country and it can sometimes seem overwhelming trying to figure out how to solve this complex issue. Right here in New Jersey though, Jenny DePaul is doing her part to help fight homelessness. Starting out by bringing sandwiches to Penn Station in Newark and having lunch with people there, eventually that snowballed and Project Kind was born. Segment 1Jenny takes us through her background growing up in New Jersey and describing how Project Kind started. She wasn't just bringing sandwiches and dropping them off, she would sit and learn about their lives and then share their stories to the world. Project Kind's reach now goes well beyond Newark, Penn Station, and even New Jersey, but she's helped touch over 100,000 lives in some way across the country. Today in New Jersey History: George Griswold Frelinghuysen was born on May 9, 1851 in Newark, New Jersey. He was a patent lawyer and president of the New Jersey brewery, P. Fighting Homelessness in New Jersey

Asahda's Soulfood Restaurant in Chatham may seem like an interesting choice for a town not known for its soul food. However, its food is incredible and authentic as it gets. Its owner, Karima Singleton, a full-time teacher, creates daily menus with love just like you're going over to her house for dinner.Segment 1 Karima takes us through her background and all the different paths life has taken her. The Seeing Eye is a philanthropic organization whose mission is to enhance the independence, dignity, and self-confidence of blind people through the use of Seeing Eye dogs. We got the chance to sit down with Brian McKenna and Melissa Allman to learn more about The Seeing Eye and to go on a blindfolded walk around Morristown!Segment 1Brian &amp; Melissa describe their positions at The Seeing Eye and why they started working at the organization. Melissa is a graduate of the program, being matched with her dog Luna by The Seeing Eye five years ago, which had such a profound impact on her she decided to apply for a position. Today in New Jersey History: John Stewart "Pop" Corkhill was born on April 11, 1858, Pop began his Major League career with the Cincinnati Reds in 1883. He also played with the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, Philadelphia Athletics, and Pittsburgh Pirates before retiring in 1892 after being hit in the head by a pitch from Ed Crane.Segment 2Kimberly tells us about all the items she has on her mobile boutique. Asbury Park Distilling is nestled in the bustling and revitalized downtown area of Asbury Park on Lake Avenue. For the last five years the distillery has been a staple of the community, not only in the tasting room but in other restaurants in the area. They're products have won awards at competitions around the country, including taking home the award of "Best Gin in the World" at the prestigious 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Asbury Park is a legendary Jersey Shore destination, but the city has gone through extreme hardships throughout its life . Over the last several years though, Asbury Park has experienced a renaissance. Marrying its roots in music, artistry, and uniqueness with a new vision and life that creates an incredible experience every time you visit. Part of that renaissance is a restaurant nestled right on the boardwalk and owned by restaurant industry mogul Tim McLoone, Iron Whale.  Segment 1Tim McLoone owns 11 restaurants throughout the state, but his background prior to the restaurant industry was in music. New Jersey is the diner capital of the world. Surprisingly though, we have not had a diner on the show so far! Well today we are fixing that and what a diner to start off with! The Jefferson Diner, located in Lake Hopatcong, is consistently recognized as one of the top diners in not only Morris &amp; Sussex counties, but the entire state. Originally from New Jersey, she attended New York School of Interior Design in NYC, and eventually started working for other people. About eight years ago, she decided to go out on her own. Since then she's been working on plenty of high-end residential projects, as well as restaurants, and other commercial projects. Today in New Jersey History: Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 in Germany. His work as a theoretic physicist influenced the philosophy of science and his very name is synonymous with genius. Being Jewish, he came to the United States as Hitler's influence grew in Germany and settled in Princeton, New Jersey, affiliating himself until his death in 1955 with the Institute for Advanced Study. Segment 2 We discuss what it is like working with Ali and how they go through planning what the design will look like and eventually making their dreams come to reality. Working with different people, different personalities, and different styles, are things that go into putting together the plans together. Kerri is publishing a book, New Jersey Fan Club: Artists and Writers Celebrate the Garden State, which is set to release on June 17th, 2022. South + Pine American Eatery is a staple of downtown Morristown and its reputation is a direct reflection of its Head Chef, Leia Gaccione. She's appeared on Iron Chef, Chopped, and will be on Bravo's 2022 season of Top Chef! They offer their guests a seasonal menu with the freshest local ingredients, but also have certain staples that have become fan favorites. Whether or not you have, it is certainly something to explore and Mayernik Kitchen in Pompton Plains takes the time to make sure you are educated on how their products can help so you can make the best decision for your health. The owners, Shannon Mulligan-Mayernik and her husband Matt launched this idea essentially sitting on a mountain of oregano and seven years later they are offering their products in their very own store front!Segment 1Shannon discusses how their business started. Originally a subscription box company (which did not do well), Shannon and Matt refocused their vision on what they were growing and creating projects that they loved, used and wanted to share.  Today in New Jersey History: The "Seashores Finest Train" , the Blue Comet started making its runs from Jersey City to Atlantic City on February 21st 1929 and would continue transporting people along the coast until 1941. Segment 2Shannon breaks out an elderberry syrup, a fire tonic, and a tincture. She walks us through the process of how they are made, what they are supposed to help with, and how they help customers make the best decisions for their health. Nicole Teitler is not originally from New Jersey, but we're not going to hold it against her. Originally from Long Island, Nikki On the Daily, her personal brand, moved here just over a year ago (we would say that's a great move) and has fallen in love with the Hoboken and Jersey City communities. Segment 1Nikki started Nikki On the Daily as a byline in her journalism career, but has since grown it into a brand within herself. Now she works with local businesses around the state helping them tell their own brand stories. Nikki also loves traveling around her communities to visit cool places and share that with her own community and followers! Today in New Jersey History: Charles F. Hopkins, the last surviving New Jersey Civil War Medal of Honor recipient, died on February 14, 1934 in Boonton, New Jersey. Hopkins was awarded the medal for carrying a wounded soldier off the battlefield at Gaines Mill, Virginia in 1862. He also served as the mayor of Boonton.   Segment 2Nikki discusses the current demand for "creators" among businesses. The year 2020 was a harsh lesson for some businesses that there is a need to connect with their customers and communities beyond the four walls of their business. It is also important to understand who that community is and where they "hang out" on social media.
