How Sermon Centrality Hinders The Body of Christ

When we read our Bibles without regard to whether the passage we're reading resides in the Old Covenant or the New Covenant, we're mis-reading it. It's common today to give little or no consideration to a New Covenant/Old Covenant context and by doing so, we end up flattening out all of scripture as though every verse or passage is of equal weight and that all of it applies to us today. This is a big mistake that blurs the lines between law and grace and ends up mixing the two and grace becomes non-grace. What Happens When We Don't Read The Bible In Light of The New Covenant?

The recently released movie, The Jesus Revolution, brought back many memories for us of the early days of our lives as Jesus People because we were both there to experience some of it. Mike came to Jesus in January of 1973 in the Calvary Chapel tent at a Saturday night concert and Susan met Jesus in the summer of 1973 at an ocean baptism in Pirate's Cove. If you've seen the movie, or if you were there too, you know of these places. We didn't know each other at that time but after we married in 1974, we moved to Costa Mesa where we were part of that first Calvary Chapel. What is Spiritual Growth?

Religion diminishes who we are in Jesus by adding layers of obligations on top of the finished work of Jesus on the cross and in his resurrection. There is no rest in religion but in Jesus, rest is part of our new identity. Much like oil and water, religion and rest don't mix. I want to give a much overdue shoutout to Joel Brueseke at the Growing in Grace podcast. He was kind enough to have me on his podcast for 2 episodes several months ago. In fact, it was last year! Religion and Rest Are Incompatible

The UnSunday Show asks honest questions about the origin and validity of institutional church rules, traditions, and practices. These religious rules and practices lead us away from the simplicity of the gospel and into an exhausting performance-based experience that is designed to perpetuate itself by placing ever increasing demands on its people and are of no value in Christ. If you're exhausted from trying to keep all the religious rules that have been placed on you, listen in to these conversations as we rediscover the freedom we've been given, apart from religion and empty religious obligation.

As a child raised Sunday School and every bible study I have come to have am any questions in my adulthood. I am very grateful to have found this podcast to help me flourish and research deeper into my faith. This podcast is uncomfortable, especially if you are currently apart of a church that subscribes to what he discusses in the podcast. However, he opens up dialogue that many DONT. Great listen!

Perfect Find For my Spiritual Questions

I love how the host and his guests dissect traditions in the church to see whether traditions (and theological stances like tithing) are biblical, cultural or simply handed down because it’s tradition. He challenges us to examine scripture in context and isn’t afraid to ask hard questions.

This episode is an episode from my old Ekklesia Podcast that I brought over to share with you.  We hear it all the time and it's used in so many ways that we don't think to question it. We assume it's true because we've been told it is for so long. I'm talking about the clergy/laity distinction. Far from being a help, the clergy/laity caste system stands in the way of a church where every believer is a priest. It reduces the priesthood of all believers to a priesthood of a select few "professional" Christians. Let's talk about the Good Samaritan. In response to Jesus' reminder that he was obligated to love God with all his being and to love his neighbor as himself, a lawyer, in an attempt to justify himself, asked Jesus who his neighbor was. This conversation took place in Luke chapter 10. Because the lawyer was living at the time of the Old Covenant, he was under obligation to obey these commands perfectly. What The Law Couldn't Do, God Did

This short phrase presents two concepts that I talk about in this episode by asking the questions, what is preaching and what are preachers, and what did he mean by "the word"?  We take what we know in our modern-day pastor-driven model, and superimpose it back into scripture on passages like this. We assume that preaching and preachers are a reference to pastors and what they do because that's what we see all around us. The System We Call Church

Formal church membership is an accountability contract the institution will require you to sign in order to have leverage over you as motivation to keep supporting the institution. That's not a description you'll see on any church website, but it cuts to the chase and it's true. Make no mistake, what you're signing is an accountability contract designed to keep you in conformity with the institution's established requirements using rewards for compliance and punishments for failure to comply.  There are usually 3 areas covered in most formal church membership contracts that are there in order to secure conformity to the established rules of the group. How Our View of Church Informs Our View of the Gospel

Welcome to episode 26 of The UnSunday Show. Today's episode is a look at William Tyndale and his authoring of the New Testament in the English language. He wanted the people of his day to have a New Testament in their own language so they could read and interpret it for themselves instead of having to rely solely on the church hierarchy of the day to tell them what it meant. In his desire to remain true to the Greek text, he translated a handful of words according to their true meaning as opposed to the church's long standing definitions. Particularly, he translated ekklesia as congregation, not church. He translated presbuteros as elder, not priest, agape as love, not acts of charity, and metanao as repent, not penance.But this didn't go over well with the church of his day because it exposed the true meaning of these words the church had been keeping from the people for hundreds of years. Dying Daily and Carrying Crosses

Welcome to episode 32 of The UnSunday Show. Let's talk about the clutter that gets in between us and Jesus that ends up giving us a smaller version of Jesus. Institutional religion works hard at convincing us that Jesus alone really isn't enough. It puts obstacles between us and Jesus that we're told need to be there in order to be complete and remain acceptable to God. Sometimes it's sub-mediators as we're told we need Jesus and the pastor, priest, or leader to guide and direct us. At other times it's things like religious obligation, accountability, service, tithing, works, or religious duty that we're told must be consistent in our lives in order to keep peace with God.But at the end of the day, these burdens are placed on us to keep the institution strong and when we embrace the thought that we need Jesus plus these other things, we're settling for something smaller than Jesus. When we come alive to the reality of the life of God in us, the freedom from religious bondage that we experience makes us an instant threat to religious institutions because we realize we don't need those institutions and in fact, they're in the way and they're forcing a smaller version of Jesus on us. Welcome to episode 13 of The UnSunday Show. I finally bought a book that I first saw in 2008. It's called A Church Building Every 1/2 Mile by Jon Zens. It's subtitled, What Makes American Christianity Tick? I think the title says it all. It's an excellent book that I really enjoyed reading so I thought I would share it with you by way of interacting with short excerpts from it. This will be the first of several episodes interacting with this book. I'm looking forward to seeing where this takes us.  My first exposure to Jon Zens was in 1995 and I had the opportunity to meet him later that same century (I've been waiting for a chance to use that "century" phrase!).
